‘If I Knew’ – Donegal Singer Songwriter Shauna Scanlon shares second Single

‘If I Knew’ is the second single from Donegal singer-songwriter Shauna Scanlon. It follows the huge success of her first single ‘Homebird’ which cemented her as a name to watch in the Irish music scene. ‘If I Knew’ is one of several singles from her upcoming EP.

The song is an anthem for anyone who has been wronged by someone they trusted. It talks about someone you know (a partner, friend or colleague) turning out to be the opposite of who you thought they were and regretting having ever met them. ‘If I Knew’ is the perfect track to belt out in the car or in the shower and let out all your frustrations!

The track is a refreshingly modern take on seventies’ funk featuring a toe-tapping slap bass from Donegal musician Adam Ayres. Shauna’s powerful vocals give the track a neo-soul vibe while all elements are pulled together by producer Callum ‘Gordo’ Gordon.

Fourth New Video from Indie Outfit Loko Parentis to Back Latest Album

Dream Revolution’ is the latest video release by Dublin-based indie/alternative outfit, Loko Parentis who earlier this month released a brand new compilation album of tracks from their first two albums (2009 and 2010.)  The new album is called ‘Dream Longer Than You Sleep’ and the ‘Dream Revolution’ track is the fourth of six videos released to tie-in with the album.

This video, plus the previous three, are available to stream on: https://lokoparentis.bandcamp.com/video while the remaining two videos will be released in the coming weeks.

This ‘Dream Revolution’ video has a special Cork focus featuring, as it does, one of the last images of the legendary and now sadly defunct Leeside venue, Sir Henry’s, prior to its demolition. The exterior shot, taken by Loko’s Paul O’Mahony, was used in a recent David Gray documentary. The video features the also-legendary original manager of the venue, Jimmy O’Hara, and a number of Cork bands in which O’Mahony played, including Cork’s first punk band Berserk, and early ‘80s power-pop group, Factor Fiction.

The album ‘Dream Longer Than You Sleep’ is a scintillating blast of guitars-with-attitude, and laden with hooks and choruses. The various band members cite influences like Television, Magazine, Sonic Youth, Mott The Hoople, Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

The album cover of ‘Dream Longer Than You Sleep’ features professional footballer, Emma Starr, in what is believed to be the first album cover featuring a professional female footballer. Starr, from Philadelphia, USA, was a Women’s National League and Cup double-winner with Dublin’s Shelbourne FC in season 2022. She now plays in Australia and scored the winning goal in the Grand Final there in October 2023 and was selected in the Team of the Year in November 2023. The 2024 season recently kicked off ‘down under’.

Loko Parentis began as a studio project in Cork in 1981 and featured members of Nun Attax and Cork’s first punk band, Berserk. Loko Parentis was founded by Paul O’Mahony, ex-Berserk, who has remained its driving force ever since the original ‘80s demo, which garnered considerable national and local airplay at the time. An amended line-up played the Oxegen Festival in 2007 (Pet Sounds stage, opening for acts like Sinead O’Connor and Brian Wilson). The Loko Parentis line-up on the new compilation album and videos features Paul O’Mahony with ex-members of The Gurriers, Las Vegas Basement, The Cherries, Estel and The Evil Kneivals.

Brian Irvine (Northern Ireland, 1965), A Call To Arms (2024) [World Premiere]
Nicole Lizée (Canada, 1973) Peril Earrings (2023) 8’ [Irish Premiere]

Fearless interpreters of new music, Stone Drawn Circles brings together 6 trailblazing artists who hold exploratory music at the heart of their practice. Artist-led, the ensemble features players from groups including Eighth Blackbird, stargaze, Crash Ensemble, and Ergodos. Equally at ease with complexity as they are in graphic scoring and improvisation, Stone Drawn Circles are a collective of risk-takers and sonic explorers – Lina Andonovska – flutes, Nathan Sherman – viola, Michelle O’Rourke – voice, Alex Petcu – percussion, Caimin Gilmore – double bass, and Úna Monaghan – harp/sound design.

Described as an Irish New Music ‘supergroup’ at their début performance at the international Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Stone Drawn Circles embark on the In Formation tour in May: Glór (Ennis), Triskel Arts Centre (Cork), The Hugh Lane (Dublin), Crescent Arts Centre (Belfast). Bringing new works by composers by 4 composers who are making waves within the global new music scene: Canadian composer Nicole Lizée, Northern Irish composers Úna Monaghan and Brian Irvine, and Australian composer Cat Hope.

‘In Formation’ by Úna Monaghan investigates three things: how a musician comes to be, what we carry with us and band dynamics in a humorous way. Part concert work/ part melodrama, the fourth wall is dropped in this interactive exploration of relationships within the creation of art.

‘Landay Sequenzas’ by Cat Hope consists of five English translations of Afghan Landays set to music. The Landay is an Afghan form of poetry consisting of a single couplet in Pashto, one of two national languages of Afghanistan. Commonly shared orally amongst Pashtan women, they are sung aloud, sometimes with the beat of a hand drum and address themes of love, grief, homeland, war, and separation. This work is a tribute to the plight of Afghan women.

‘A Call to Arms’ by Brian Irvine is one of a series of works that explores aspects of contemporary greed. At the height of the Covid Pandemic UK Conservative peer Michelle Mone together with her financial investor husband Doug Barrowman set up a company called PPE MEDPRO in order to claim £202 million worth of contracts to supply the government with masks and gowns. Corruption ensued, with this work taking a transcript from a television interview and setting it to an abstract cabaret of sorts. A Call To Arms’ by Brian Irvine was commissioned by the Contemporary Music Centre, Ireland for Stone Drawn Circles, supported by PRS Foundation Beyond Borders funding.

‘Brilliant musical scientist’ and the 2024 recipient of a JUNO award for Best Classical Composition, Nicole Lizée offers a slice of her unique compositional language in ‘Peril Earrings’, bringing together glitch and pop music styles in a kind of musical harmony.

Irish Singer and Sonic Auteur Ger Eaton announces first Dublin Headline Show

Ger Eaton, with support from Nick Haeffner.

Ger Eaton is taking his solo releases to the stage for the first time – with a 7 piece band!

More info here: https://www.universe.com/events/ger-eaton-plays-the-alternative-sunday-social-club-hyde-may-19th-400pm-tickets-W27G9V

4pm, Sunday May 19th in one of Dublin’s newest venues, Hyde on Lemon St (just off Grafton St)..

Ger Eaton whose distinctive keyboards have graced many Dublin and Irish bands of the last two decades, is the Irish singer and sonic auteur behind a remarkable and acclaimed set of songs released as singles over the past two years, both on his own imprint and by enterprising London label Dimple Discs who spotted a good thing and snapped him up. Beginning with I Thought I’d A Friend and continuing through the beautiful Hollow, The Time It Takes To Fall, Phoenix, Home Again and most recently Seasons Change, Ger’s work carries echoes of Scott Walker, Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson and the high melodic heyday of the late 1960s, yet shot through with a contemporary slant and edge. Each new song and accompanying video has marked a exciting stage in Ger’s progress and has received recognition by Irish and UK DJs and tastemakers. After much preparation Ger has fashioned a band to do justice to the gorgeous complexity of his recordings, and after a debut at last year’s My My My July Festival in Birr, will premiere his full seven-piece ensemble in Dublin at the Alternative Sunday Social Club. Early booking is recommended.

Nick Haeffner is a songwriter and musician based in London. His debut album on the Bam Caruso label in 1987 was greeted with critical acclaim after which he disappeared from the music scene for over 30 years. His comeback album A New Life Awaits You (2019) was very well received with Alan Moore describing Nick as ‘one of the country’s most wonderful secret voices’. His current album, What Time Can Do was released last year on Dimple Discs records. Nick has been gigging on a regular basis with backup from Marcus Holdaway of The High Llamas on keyboards. His forthcoming reworking of Harry Nilsson’s songs from The Point features guest appearances from Eileen Gogan, Sean O’Hagan, Damian O’Neill, Ger Eaton, Keeley and many others.

20-year-old singer-songwriter Bea and her Business shares new track ‘Good Things’ – out now

Bea and her Business is just getting started, but the 20-year-old singer-songwriter is already making waves in the UK and beyond. After achieving over 50 million streams for her debut EP ‘Introverted Extrovert’, her next releases ‘Me Against My Head’ and ‘WOW!’ continued to accelerate her rising status. Now Bea takes her next step by sharing the new track ‘Good Things’.

With ‘Good Things’, Bea adds a fresh pop angle to her super charismatic vocals following the vulnerable piano ballad ‘Me Against My Head’ and the fervent funk of ‘WOW!’. Her lyrics explore a realisation that many people experience in young adulthood – sometimes you need to take the leap to make good things happen for yourself rather than waiting and wallowing in despair.

Bea says, “I wrote this at a time when I could not get any more single. All my friends were in long-term relationships, I on the other hand… let’s just say it wasn’t looking good! Everyone kept saying ‘good things come to those who wait’ or ‘it’ll come when you’re least expecting it.’ But after 19 years of waiting, I strongly disagreed with that! This song is a reminder to never wait for anyone or anything. It’s your world and they’re just living in it, remember that. YOU JUST GOTTA GO OUT AND GET ‘EM!”

Influenced by poetry, especially Kate Bingham and Leonard Cohen, and painstakingly collated mood boards, Bea has been writing songs since childhood. Her debut single ‘Born To Be Alive’ made a huge impact, landed her first Radio 1 airplay, and even raced up the Nordic charts, while the ‘Introverted Extrovert’ EP cemented her reputation as an artist to watch. Her recent singles have fired up her following at TikTok to 1.6 million with 40 million likes, while ‘WOW!’ heighted her international following as it earned radio support in all key markets across Europe.

Yet while her growing online following is undeniable, she is quickly establishing an IRL fanbase too. Her first public performance came in front of a huge festival audience of 70,000 people in Oslo in 2023. Bea has also just completed her first full European headline tour, where strong demand for tickets resulted in her London Lafayette and Cologne dates selling out weeks in advance while Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin followed.

After a successful 2023, Ciara Lawless, the Celtic songbird, hailing from Ireland, starts on a strong note by releasing her new pop single “No Rain, No Flowers” on April 12th, from her debut album, released today.

“No Rain, No Flowers” was written by LA-based Myah Marie, who has worked with Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Lil Wayne, and Selena Gomez, alongside Irish songwriter Oisin Browne.
Ciara describes the song as “a catchy, upbeat, fun pop song about resilience, hope, and growth in the face of adversity.”

Ciara’s musical journey began at a young age when she started taking classes in acting and singing. Later, she developed an interest in classical and opera, training at the Academy of Music in Tullamore, where she also competed in national and international competitions. While some singers hone their skills while climbing the music ladder, Ciara earned her singing stripes as a funeral singer, something she is very proud and honoured to do. Showing a steady rise on the music scene, Ciara Lawless is making waves after a successful run on the festival circuit, coupled with the release of her first four singles. Ciara has not only honed her stage presence but has also become known for her soulful voice and signature flower head crowns, catching the eyes of festival-goers.

“No Rain, No Flowers” drops on April 12th, giving fans a taste of what’s to come from this rising star. With an album on the horizon, set for release on April 26th, 2024, Ciara Lawless is

David Kitt releases new Version of ‘Say No More’ featuring Annie (Chicks, The Radio) & Mick Tierney (Republic of Loose, Mik Pyro)

David Kitt re-releases 2006’s release Not Fade Away on May 24 on vinyl for the first time. Originally released on Rough Trade records, the album has been lovingly remastered and re-sequenced, and features a new version of hit single Say No More, which is available to stream now. Speaking on the new track, Kitt says:

“Say No More is a semi-fictionalised account of a typical weekend night in Dublin centred around Wexford St in the mid noughties. I have a fondness for the original version, but it didn’t fit the flow of the album and I thought I’d take the opportunity to put that right with the upcoming reissue. It feels a bit more Dire Straits now.

The new version was mainly recorded at Hellfire Studios and features Graham Hopkins on drums and Annie and Mick Tierney on vocals. I’ve loved Annie’s voice since the Chicks days and I’m a big fan of her brother in all his guises too, so I was delighted to have them both on board.”

Kittser will be returning to his spiritual home, Whelan’s, to perform the album in full as well as some classics from the back catalogue with a full band on Saturday September 21, and ahead of that, performs special in-store shows at:

May 22 – The Big Romance Parnell St Listening Party
May 24 – Spin Dizzy Dublin, 6pm
May 25 – Zhivago Galway, 1 pm
May 25 – Steamboat Limerick, 5 pm
May 26 – Rollercoaster Kilkenny, 4 pm
May 27 – Musiczone Cork, 6 pm

A unique and sincere songwriter with an expert ability to meld inspirations, eras and sounds, platinum-selling artist David Kitt’s music glimmers with a sense of timelessness well-earned after over twenty years immersed in music.

A note from David Kitt on Not Fade Away – 18 years in the making…

Not Fade Away was originally released in 2006 on Rough Trade Records. As the record was being made there were rumours going around the music industry that Rough Trade was about to lose its financial backing, and despite reassurances from the label that this wasn’t the case, I had a gnawing feeling that for the third record running something was going to scupper my album getting a proper international release. It felt like my last chance on a big label with proper financial support and international reach, something that ultimately proved to be true.

My personal life was also a complete mess and general confidence was at an all-time low. It was the first time in my life where the sacred space of making music had been invaded by these kinds of fears and outside forces, it was a dark time looking back now and I guess that comes through pretty loud and clear in the lyrics.

In spite of all this, I have many treasured memories from the making of the album – Recording with Romeo and Michelle of The Magic Numbers in Woodstock at the famous Big Pink house the day after being to one of Levon Helm’s famous Midnight Ramble parties which featured an all-star cast including Emmylou Harris singing Evangeline with Levon for the first time since The Band’s Last Waltz. We even got to use the piano played on Bob Dylan’s ‘I Shall Be Released’! Working with Cardigans producer Tore Jonhansson in Malmo on Up To You and Sleep had some real moments of magic as did the recordings with my good friends Karl Odlum and Jimmy Eadie and drummer Graham Hopkins at Black Box Studios in France. Chipping away in the attic of my flat on the canal in Dublin on synths and overdubs and recording my old school friend Paul G. Smyth playing piano at The Church studios in London. A lot of credit has to go to Karl for really pulling me through as both a co-producer on the tracks and as friend and confidante at the time. At a time when confidence was so low, he dragged a lot of good work out of me and helped remind me of what I was capable of and his skills and talents as producer/arranger/musician were essential to this record coming together and its best bits working so well. I really couldn’t have done it without him.

Surely enough, shortly after the release of the record it was announced that Rough Trade had lost its financial backing and that incarnation of the label went under, meaning that my record didn’t get a proper release in Europe or America and barely had any support in the U.K. I was pretty devastated. I had spent two years making it and at the time I thought it was a really strong record. I had received a decent publishing advance and I threw most of it into making a ridiculously expensive music video (capturing for eternity a pretty shocking hair day) and promoting the record in Ireland where it did pretty well and was pretty well-received but it marked the end of that phase of my career and that approach to making records – traipsing around the world in fancy studios with a generous budget. Not Fade Away cost close to 80,000 pounds which is crazy to think nowadays. It’s important to express gratitude to Geoff Travis and Rough Trade for giving me back my masters considering the financial debt I owe them. This doesn’t happen with the likes of Warner Brothers!

When I got the rights to the record back 6 or 7 years ago, I starting thinking about how to approach the reissue. There was a lot I loved about the record but I never loved it as a whole. At times my writing was below par or production wise I wise trying too hard or just off the mark and trying to fit too many ideas into one track. Of all my releases it was the only one that I would change, given the chance, and now I had that opportunity.

I was very conscious of what the record meant to other people, so many people over the years have told me how it had helped them get through difficult breakups and tough times in their lives. I wanted to make sure I preserved what was special about it but make it flow better and trim off all the fat. At one point I thought maybe I should just use the album as material to sample and make a brand new thing but that would have been foolish and time-consuming and disappointing for a lot of fans waiting for a faithful re-issue.

There were two tracks in particular that I thought were just plain weak so they were ditched. Say No More has been re-recorded to fit the flow of the record better and features a middle 8 that I wrote on the album tour after the record’s original release.

There’s also a brand new song called Love Someone Else featuring Niamh Regan. The record really needed to empty out more in terms of drums/percussion and it needed something different emotionally. One of the great things about making records for as long as I’ve been making them is that when there’s a problem to solve some part of your mind is always active, whirring away, unconsciously trying to solve the puzzle and Love Someone Else presented itself during peak Covid times when there were many overlaps with the emotional landscape that this record came out of and I knew straight away I had the last piece of the jigsaw. It was exactly what the album needed.

The new version of Say No More was recorded with Graham Hopkins who played most the drums on the original record and features backing vocals from Annie Tierney who sang on the original and her brother Mick of Republic of Loose and Mick Pyro fame. Niamh’s vocals were recorded at Sonic Studios in Stoneybatter using a ribbon microphone that Sinéad O’Connor had used several times. It was shortly after she had passed away, which added some magic to that session.

18 years after its initial release I finally have a version of the record I really love available on vinyl for the first time.

Dublin Vinyl were due to release this exclusive vinyl, although sadly they went in to liquidation recently. I’ve come up with an alternative solution to keep the vinyl re-issue alive.

I’ve decided to release the tracks exclusively through Bandcamp ahead of the official physical release on May 24 to help raise the necessary funds and do this completely independently. There has been an amazing response from unexpected corners of the music community and it’s looking like we can still make that May 24 vinyl release date.
