BBC Four To Broadcast Other Voices 20th Anniversary Special This March

On 18 March, to honour twenty years of Other Voices, BBC Four will broadcast a sixty-minute special film celebrating the history and foundations of Ireland’s most internationally acclaimed music festival and television series.

Presented by renowned Irish broadcaster and former BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Macmanus, this special film will feature new performances from Sam Fender, Sigrid, Orla Gartland, Dermot Kennedy, Villagers, Kay Young and John Grant and will include never-before-seen conversations with some of music’s brightest stars.

These extraordinary intimate performances were captured in the tiny Church of St James in Dingle last November as part of Other Voices’ twentieth-anniversary celebrations.

Produced by South Wind Blows, ‘Ireland’s Greatest Small Music Festival: Other Voices’ will also open the Other Voices vault, sharing some remarkable archive performances from the past two decades including legendary sets from BRIT award winning Little Simz, Mercury Prize award winner Arlo Parks and an iconic ‘Courage’ performance by the Grammy nominated Fontaines D.C. who release their highly anticipated third album ‘Skinty Fia’ this April.

This sixty-minute film will be broadcast on BBC Four on Friday 18 March at 10pm and comes ahead of the transmission of the twentieth series of Other Voices which hits RTÉ 2 later this Spring.

“Other Voices is communion. It is the rhythm and flow of a long conversation. It is the surprise of a tear running down a cheek. It is songs carrying us away and then bringing us back to each other. That is the heart of the matter.”

Annie Macmanus, Other Voices Presenter

“It has been so exciting to produce this film for the BBC and share some magical musical moments located in the Church of St James, in the town of Dingle in one of the most spectacular and beautiful landscapes in western Europe.”

Philip King, Director of Other Voices

“I’m delighted to bring this wonderful festival to a UK television audience. There is something very special about Other Voices, the town of Dingle and the church of St James that hopefully we have captured in the programme. It’s that magic which has kept this tiny festival at the top of the agenda and a must play for artists across the UK and Ireland for the past twenty years.” Rachel Davies, Commissioning Editor for BBC Music

New Single From Tracy Connolly ‘He’s Sick of Making Love To Me’

‘He’s Sick Of Making Love To Me’ is for anyone who became of age to fantasize about the guy next door. Anyone who dreamt one day he’d be theirs. Along the way the guy next door visits her imaginary room and it’s amazing for sure. For most of us the guy next door wouldn’t even begin to imagine you were so into them. This song is about dreamers, people who fantasize about love, fun and unfortunately they get let down when he goes in home and shuts the door. You can still dream about them and how wild it could be.

‘He’s Sick Of Making Love To Me’ is being released on the 28th Mar 2022. This time Tracy has put her energy into making a video that she herself believes Is a must for the song. Tracy has had two previous songs ‘The Bloods’ her first single which went to No 1 on the Irish Country Charts for 3 full days and ‘When I’m Alone’ her second new release written for her father she loved so dearly. Tracy is working on her new debut album of 12 songs and has expressed how much she’s enjoying this journey.

“I love that I’ve become so comfortable writing poetry and the fact that some of my poetry almost whistles a tune when I write it. I feel truly blessed to be gifted such an opportunity to expand my loved passion and creativity. I want to give something back through my poetry and it has to be to capture the minds of others through song. Just to make them sing along and enjoy the experience that I’m feeling would be great. I’ve always had love for country and folk music. I can see Miss Dolly Parton in this song. In fact she is a true inspiration in country music and to me. I have also been influenced by many artists such as Mary Black, Delores Keane, Christy Moore, Alison Krauss and so much more.”

‘He’s Sick Of Making Love To Me’ was written by Tracy Connolly and she is also the executive music producer to her own music. Pat Barrett is the music producer and bass guitar on the track along with Pat O’ Sullivan Piano and John Barrett drums.

“When you love music you don’t get a choice to make it sleep. The music just stays embedded in your soul”©️

Kynsy Shares New Single ‘New Year’

Today Dublin-based Kynsy – real name Ciara Lindsey – shares brand new single “New Year”.

She wrote the song on New Year’s Eve and explains, “At the time I had a real desire to celebrate the turn of the year by doing something creative. I had definitely been listening to a lot of Róisín Murphy around then and with the song I wanted to explore the idea of someone who is looking for meaning as the clock edges towards midnight and a new year is on the horizon.”

On the video she adds, “I wanted to recreate the chaotic energy of the song somehow. Working with Georgia Kelly and The Collective we took inspiration from the frantic nature of old black and white silent films to make something strange and intense to try and capture that New Year energy.”

The song is co-produced by Kynsy and Charlie Andrew (Alt J, Wolf Alice, Marika Hackman).

Kynsy’s debut EP, Things That Don’t Exist, was released in 2021 and featured three standout singles. Her debut single “Cold Blue Light” was described by Dork as, “all at once understated and anthemic, a foreboding, end-of-the-world beast that channels youthful rage into something that’s both tragic and yet somehow uplifting”. DIY called follow up “Happiness Isn’t a Fixed State” “another instant mesmerising earworm from the rising multi-instrumentalist”. Remarking on the EP as a whole, The Quietus said, “Although the debut EP from 23-year-old Ciara Lindsey only features four tracks, there’s more dexterous experimentation than a lot of young artists will achieve for years.”

Her most recent single “Mr Nice Guy” was nominated for The Choice Music Prize for Irish Song of The Year 2021. Having already racked up a wealth of further praise from NME, The Line of Best Fit, Clash and BBC Radio 1, “New Year” is an exciting taste of what’s to come from Kynsy in 2022.

New Single From Fiona Kennedy ‘Heart & Soul’

Heart & Soul is the latest single release from Cork based Singer Songwriter Fiona Kennedy. A recording artist & IRMA Award nominee, Fiona Kennedy has a very long track record which includes albums, EP’s & singles and many TV performances, including her own one-hour TV special on RTE. Her followers are growing fast with long time music lovers being joined by many new fans of Kennedy’s distinctive voice & thoughtful, honest songwriting.

Heart & Soul launched officially on 3rd March and a new album is due for release later this year.

Fiona’s single ‘Where Else Would You Get It’, produced by Declan Sinnott (Mary Black/Christy Moore) along with her previous single ‘Place of my Resurrection’, went straight to number one in the ITunes Chart in 2021.

In the artists own words: ‘Looking after an elderly parent taught me so much about myself…I wanted to write a song for my mum when she was still with us and as she was always a big fan of Gospel music, it felt right to follow that route with this latest song. She left us around Christmastime at 95 years young. Heart & Soul is my tribute to that incredible generation of women who lived through so many huge changes in the world and stayed steady as a rock throughout.

Fiona worked with another Irish music industry heavyweight, guitarist Bill Shanley (Paul Brady/The Kinks) on her last album ‘The Beach’ which she recorded in 2017 after a hiatus that saw her concentrating on bringing up her 2 daughters after many years performing internationally and in Ireland.

Fiona was honoured to win an award from the prestigious Network Cork organization in 2021 for the resilience she showed and the passion for her music which has seen her continue as a full-time independent musician through 2 recessions in a notoriously difficult industry.

Gary O’Neill Set to Release Single ‘Petals’ Ahead of Debut EP

Emerging Irish Singer/Songwriter, Gary O’Neill is set to release his brand new single ‘Petals’ which is the first single off his Debut EP ‘For Those I’ve Missed’ which will be released a little later this Spring.

The EP was recorded in Asta Kalapa Studios, Co Wexford and ‘Petals’ drops March 18th 2022.

Gary is a Kilkenny born singer-songwriter and producer, who’s live performances have been described as Intimate, Honest and Full Of Character’, his band will do a small tour across Ireland in March to promote the EP with a date at Workman’s cellar in Dublin on March 20th 2022.

Gary started playing guitar at the young age of 14, thought by his father teaching him a few basic chords, Gary then went on to being entirely self-thought after and began writing his own music.

The Kilkenny singer-songwriter has spent his time growing up in numerous bands and finding his sound and style, speaking about his youth in music O’Neill states:

I played in different bands growing up, and wrote lots of music for my old teenage band; Alka Jessie. I think if I looked back on all of that work I would cringe at the thought of it. But we were so young. Everyone back then was a rock band, and this was our attempt at some progressive, folk outfit that cared more about what the story of a song could tell over the performance of it.”

Gary has released a few albums over the years but has since taken most stuff offline as he now gears to set out on his brand new musical journey and developing a new sound for himself.

“I was heavily influenced by John Martyn. He changed the landscape, for me, of what it meant to be a guitarist. Free formed, unusual open tunings- they were melodic and inimitable. He wavered the line between this wild, eccentric, comical entertainer – who was simultaneously a thoughtful, clever, passionate and romantic songwriter. The contrast was so intriguing to me.

I would’ve found similar inspiration with Ben Howard, David Gray- Joni Mitchell.  But my biggest influence, my reason for choosing to pursue music – is thanks to a Foy Vance concert I saw years ago. It embodied everything I would grow to love about writing and performing. Swinging from pure intimacy, to hilarity – having a whole room in the palm of your hands. It was such an emblematic, evocative, monumental moment for me; it kick-started my whole pursuit of music.”

‘To Those I’ve Missed’ is a body of work that explores friendships, relationships from the past, present and future. Time, especially within the last couple of years – can drift us apart. But the spirit of those we love and miss is boundless, and can always be acknowledged in the appearance of memory.

The EP drops April 15th 2022.

Petals
A song about living abroad, missing family. Petals is an ode my mother and grandmother and their hopes that I’d return home someday. “It’s not Ireland when you’re gone” they told me once over the phone.

Bordeaux

An encounter, a story about a man falling for a French woman, fantasizing about the idea of moving to the countryside- but not certain if it’s entirely for love, or rather to escape his own circumstance.

Jasmine
A love letter, a story telling us that regardless of what happens in the future, the fondness of love & companionship will live in the perpetuity of memory

ONEMAC PROJECT Announce Release of New Single ‘Irish For a Day (A Song For St. Patrick’s Day)’

Following on from their New York A-listed radio hit “Day by Day” and the success of their seasonal “Memories of Christmas Day”, which was played on over 40 radio stations in the USA and Canada, as well as being A-listed on at least one International Christmas radio station, ONEMAC PROJECT (OMP) today announced the release of their new single, “Irish For a Day (A Song For St. Patrick’s Day)”, a high-energy, uplifting, radio-friendly, fun song to celebrate Ireland’s National Holiday. The song is a blend of driving rock and traditional Irish music with a bit of humour and a very catchy chorus.

The central theme of the song is to reject the name “St. Patty’s Day” as they sing “You can call him Pat, or Paddy, but Patty … No, No Way!”  So it’s a feel-good song that will have people dancing and singing along with it. It’s amazing to think that with over 100 million people worldwide claiming Irish connections and the fact that St. Patrick’s Day is widely celebrated in so many parts of the world that there are few if any, songs specifically for St. Patrick’s Day. Well, St. Patrick’s Day has it’s own song now!

With a driving Bodhran behind the vocal, you could almost hear Christy Moore singing these lines;

“They say he drove the snakes away

I think he missed a few

It’s not what I am saying

But that’s according to

Jimmy ’n Johnny n Mary n Paul

In fact, there’s quite a few

That hung around and caused a row

They never said adieu.”

While this is a fun song, there are also a few social comments thrown into the mix. Well, it wouldn’t be OMP without it. For example, in verse two, there is a nod to how Ireland has changed and modernised in recent years, “We don’t care about your colour your gender or your creed

And of course, the Irishman abroad gets a mention …

On Bondi or on any beach

You’ll see the Irishman

His head shines like a beacon

Still searching for a tan.

Claims Bono, Bob & Rory are his friends

But that’s not true.

He’ll ask you, “what’s the story?”

But he hasn’t a scoobie doo

Penned by Michael MacMahon, and James O’Connor, the track opens with the immaculate fiddle and mandolin of Denise Boyle, before launching into a catchy rocking chorus. O’Connor’s driving rock guitars are held together by David Harte’s sold bass lines with Dale McKay adding some tight Bodhran into the mix. As usual, O’Connor’s vocals are on point as he delivers a performance full of power and fun. The finished result, produced by MacMahon, is very hard to resist.

Most of us will recognise someone we know in the lyrics.

He doesn’t need encouragement

To dance a jig all night

He’s the master of all subjects

Though he talks a load of *****

All in all, this is an uplifting, radio-friendly, happy song that should find a wide audience of many ages at home and abroad.

“Irish For a Day (A Song For St. Patrick’s Day)” will be available to download or stream on all platforms from 14th March.

Badhands Shares New Single ‘When I Think About You’

Ahead of the release of his second album ‘Far Away’, Badhands has shared his new single ‘When I Think About You’ (released Friday 4th March).

A hazy, 60s-inspired ballad steeped in nostalgia, with Daniel Fitzpatrick’s distinctive gravelly vocal taking centre-stage, ‘When I Think About You’ is a timeless composition that harks back to the likes of Scott Walker, the Shangri-Las or Gene Pitney.

Badhands says: “When I was writing this song I felt like it was the closest thing to a power ballad that I would ever write, and I decided to really lean into the melodrama with both the lyrics and the arrangement. Musically, I was very influenced by artists like the Shangri-Las and songs such as ‘Remember, Walking In the Sand’ with their mini-epic stories of tragic romance. Their music was always poppy but had a real edge to it, which is what I was looking for with this tune.”

The single is the follow-up to ‘The Wait’ and ‘Wasted’, both of which attracted the attention of Irish media like Hot Press, Nialler9 and Entertainment.ie, and radio, with plays on stations such as RTÉ Radio 1, Radio Nova, Ocean FM and KCLR.

Badhands is the musical project of Daniel Fitzpatrick, a composer, singer and songwriter whose debut album Predictable Boy was compared to “a Lee Hazelwood epic” by journalist, playwright and former Horslips drummer Eamon Carr when it was released in 2018. His EP Oceans followed in 2020, a project which was inspired by the unique nature of each of the world’s five oceans.

Since then, Daniel has spent the past couple of years composing scores for wildlife documentaries in collaboration with some of the world’s largest TV organisations, including the BBC, PBS and RTÉ. In 2019, his score for the Wild Cuba documentary won an award at the prestigious Jackson Wild Film Festival in the U.S. in 2019, as well as winning Best Score at the 2021 Green Screen Wildlife Festival in Germany. Badhands also collaborates with artists in theatre performances, working with Maud Lee and Zoe Ni Riordan on some of their acclaimed theatre productions, such as their 2018 show Recovery which enjoyed a sold out run at Dublin’s Project Arts Centre. He is also a member of fellow Irish musician Paddy Hanna’s band.

Badhands’ new album Far Away is out on Friday 1st April 2022.

Badhands plays a full band show in Whelans main room on Saturday, 9th April 2022. Support from Anderson.

Tickets are €16, including booking fee, and can be found on sale now on Whelanslive.com.
