IMRO Pays Tribute to Legendary Songwriter Pete St. John – RIP

Pete St. John is the songwriter behind some of Ireland’s best-known ballads.

After growing up in Dublin and becoming an electrician, Pete left his hometown and emigrated to Canada. From there he travelled to Alaska, Central America, the West Indies and the USA, working in various professions along the way. He became deeply involved in the peace movement and international civil rights before returning to his native city in the late 1970s.

Upon returning to Dublin, Pete found a very different city to the one he had left and began to write songs depicting the many changes he saw around him. Many of Pete’s works relate to economic and social change in Ireland, and are as valid to audiences today as they have ever been – from “The Ferryman” trying to contemplate the implications of his new-found unemployment to a Dublin native reminiscing about life in his town “In the Rare Ould Times”.

By far, Pete’s most well-known ballad is the anthemic “Fields of Athenry”, which tells the story of an Athenry man sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, Australia during the famine for stealing food to feed his starving family. The song has been recorded by countless artists around the world, with Paddy Reilly’s version spending a massive 72 weeks in the Irish charts, one of the longest chart entries in the history of the Irish charts. The song has been adopted by sports fans and has been sung in football, rugby and boxing stadiums throughout the world in support of Irish sporting heroes.

Pete’s works have been recorded by The Dubliners, Dublin City Ramblers, The High Kings, Dropkick Murphys and many more. As well as his commercial success, Pete received awards and acknowledgements in Ireland, the UK and the USA throughout the course of his career.

A passionate advocate for creators’ rights, Pete was a founding member of IMRO. We extend our deepest sympathies to his sons Kieron and Brian, his extended family, friends and his many musical collaborators.

Farewell dear friend.

IMRO Formally Terminates Affiliation Agreement with Russian Collecting Society RAO

IMRO has today formally terminated, with immediate effect, our rights representation relationship with RAO, the Russian collecting society for musical works.

We stand alongside our colleagues and partners in Ukraine and our partners and friends at the Ukrainian Agency of Copyright and Related Rights (UACRR). They are suffering from the war instigated by the Russian Government. Their work is to support creativity, art and culture – precious qualities that enrich our lives and communities but are now under attack and facing terrible humanitarian consequences. Our thoughts are with our Ukrainian members, friends and creators who have been forced to flee their homes, hide in shelters and take to the streets to fight to protect their country and freedoms. Destruction is the very antithesis of creation; it is the very opposite of what we do in our work every day.

We encourage in the strongest terms the path of dialogue and co-operation and insist on an end to aggression and violence. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people standing defiantly in this unthinkable situation.

CISAC global community launches solidarity fund for Ukraine

CISAC, the global confederation of authors societies, has come together with its members worldwide to launch a new support fund dedicated to helping the victims of the war in Ukraine.

The fund was approved by the CISAC Board on March 9th and is the first step in a wider initiative called “Creators for Ukraine, uniting the global creative community in support of creators and refugees forced to flee the country.

Donations made to the solidarity fund will be used to help refugees fleeing the war as well as projects specifically targeted at helping Ukrainian creators.

Commenting on the new fund CISAC President Björn Ulvaeus said: “Ukraine is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe, and its victims include many of our fellow creators and friends in the creative sector. The Creators for Ukraine fund can be a way for people to help, however great or how little the donation. With this action, the CISAC community of creators and societies is once again proving its strength, solidarity and readiness to act at a moment of crisis.”

Contributions from the new fund will be highly focused on specific projects. They will pay for the continued operation of CISAC’s member societies in Ukraine. They will also support the work of Polish society ZAIKS which is taking the lead in helping refugees in the region, with more than 1.2 million Ukrainians fleeing into Poland. Money from the CISAC fund will also be distributed to societies in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia who can direct them to local charities.

Substantial donations and pledges of money have already been made by societies on behalf of their member creators.

The launch of the solidarity fund is the first step of the “Creators for Ukraine” initiative. In addition to raising funds, the global project will aim to mobilise support from creators internationally, and to promote Ukraine culture on broadcast and digital platforms.

Creators for Ukraine” is being rolled out in close partnership with societies neighbouring Ukraine. It is  also supported by other partner organisations in the creative sector, including GESAC in Europe and CISAC’s creators’ councils for music and audiovisual, CIAM and W&DW.

More details of the initiative, and payment details for donations, will be announced shortly.

New single release ‘Astronauts’ from Loud Motive

Following knockout performances at Electric Picnic, The Button Factory, The Academy, Castlepalooza, HWCH & selling out shows in legendary Dublin Venues Whelans, The Workmans, The Sound House and The Sugar Club –  Loud Motive are set to bring their sound to a whole new level this year, starting 2022 off with new single release ‘Astronauts’.

Loud Motive’s music is a fusion of seductive guitar melodies and intricate wordplay with hip-hop sensibilities. In this way, a vibrant, mainstream sonic landscape is created. The band’s experimental sound occasionally plunges us into a world of sweet swirling sounds combining the poignant essence of grunge rock with afro-beats and twists, juxtaposed with socioeconomic and politically charged lyrics reminiscent of various news stories that have been making headlines in Ireland in recent years. Loud Motive are “The act to watch” in 2022, unafraid to speak their truths and mirror them across their music repertoire.

Commenting on their music, Loud Motive’s Marvell delves into every- day issues and scenarios the young Dubliner has dealt with as he and his longtime friends try to assert themselves as Hip Hop heavyweights in the ever-growing Irish Urban community:

Our mission is to showcase a different side of the musical talent that is on display here in Ireland and to take it to the world stage, at a new height where we can be proud to say we have played a fundamental part in the growth of Irish Urban music and art. – Marvell, Ridler Tempo & Dano

The band have acquired a wealth of talent behind them, including world-renowned producer and musician Danny Saber who has worked with Madonna, David Bowie, U2, Busta Rhymes and Public Enemy to name a few. They draw musical influences from Kanye West, Lil Wayne and 50 Cent. Through all the different elements they brought to hip-hop and the connections they brought forth, they made it easy for the band to resonate with. Others include Miles Davis, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Red Hot Chili Peppers and J. Cole who then inspired them to take a deeper approach to writing music, allowing them to connect emotionally, spiritually and mentally with the creative dimensions to their craft.

“Loud Motive fuse guitar melodies and intricate wordplay with hip-hop sensibilities and politically charged lyrics inspired by the stories that have been making headlines in Ireland in recent years” – RTE

“A wealth of talent behind them, allowing them to connect emotionally, spiritually and mentally with the creative dimensions to their craft” – Hotpress

“Sharp-edged hip-hop from Loud Motive, ‘Astronauts’ is layered in beats that snap succinctly behind Loud Motive’s spiky wordplay and delivery – TLMT

IMRO Statement on Ukraine

It is heart breaking to see the destruction, the devastation, and the human misery caused by the Russian government’s invasion into Ukraine. Destruction is the very antithesis of creation, it is the very opposite of what we do in our work every day.

IMRO and its  partners around the world lament the human tragedy now unfolding in Ukraine and condemns the brutal assault by Russia on freedom and human rights. We stand alongside our colleagues and partners in Ukraine and our partners and friends at the Ukrainian Agency of Copyright and Related Rights (UACRR) who are suffering from the war instigated by the Russian Government. Their work is to support creativity, art and culture – precious qualities that enrich our lives and communities, but which are now under attack and facing terrible humanitarian consequences. Our thoughts are with friends and creators who have been forced to flee their homes, hide in shelters and take to the streets to fight to protect their country and freedoms.

We encourage in the strongest terms the path of dialogue and co-operation and insist on an end to aggression and violence. Our thoughts are with the Ukrainian people, standing defiantly in this unthinkable situation.

To those of you who may be touring on the road at this time, I urge you to include a piece of music from a living Ukrainian songwriter or composer. We stand with them in solidarity, in spirit and in harmony.

Major Irish Songwriters Talk About Classic Irish Albums in Hot Press Up Close and Personal YouTube Series

The series – featuring in depth interviews with, and performances by Gemma Hayes, Damien Dempsey, Mary Coughlan, Tim Wheeler of Ash, Conor O’Brien of Villagers and Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny – aims to deliver unique insights into some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums in Irish music history.

All six broadcasts from the Hot Press Up Close and Personal series – featuring Gemma Hayes, Damien Dempsey, Mary Coughlan, Tim Wheeler of Ash, Conor O’Brien of Villagers and Andy Irvine & Donal Lunny – are now available to view on the Hot Press YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/hotpressmagazine)

For what is the first run of this unique series, Hot Press selected six classic – and enormously successful – Irish albums, crossing decades and genres. The programmes take a deep dive into the stories behind each LP, with the artist recalling the circumstances of the time, the influences, the songwriting process, the recording of the albums – and much more besides – in the company of interviewers specially selected for each album.  The series is produced by Hot Press in association with Aidan Shortall of Up Close and Personal Promotions.

Chronicling historic moments – from the release of Planxty in 1973 to Villagers’ Awayland in 2013 – the Up Close and Personal series, held at the Grand Social  over a series if six special nights late last year – explores 40 years of Irish music history, with eye-opening new revelations and reflections shared by the artists at the centre of the albums. For fans, students and practitioners of Irish music, it’s an unmissable series.

“These six special events turned out to be absolutely brilliant nights,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. “There was such a sense of occasion, and also a marvellous feeling of warmth. It was fantastic – and inspiring – to hear the artists recall the circumstances surrounding the release of the records and to hear them talk in detail about the way wonderful songs are written, and great albums come together.”

“We’re really proud of how the videos turned out,” Niall Stokes added. “The are beautifully shot and the performances throughout are really amazing. There is so much to be learned from each and every one – about songs, songwriting, the influence of producers, choosing songs to record, making great records, and so on. There is a wonderful, hugely revealing aspect to the whole enterprise, with the artists expressing themselves very powerfully and with wonderful honesty. But there is also a rich vein of humour that makes them marvellously entertaining.

“Really, they should be viewed by anyone with an interest in Irish music, and in Irish songwriting.”

The full line-up

This special series of intimate conversations, is produced by Hot Press, in association with Aidan Shortall of Up Close and Personal Promotions, and supported by the Live Performance Support Scheme and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Jake Carter Set to Release Self-Penned Catch Pop Groove ‘I Just Gotta Take You Home’ | 25th Feb

Jake Carter is set to release his self-penned, feel good, pop groove “I Just Gotta Take You Home”.  The single is an uplifting, feel good pop song, with sing-a-long melodies, catchy guitar licks and driving bass riffs.

The catchy pop track was produced by Diffusion Lab’s Chris Bubenzer and Marcin Ciszczon, the team behind Jake Carter’s previous singles ‘I Won’t Be Leaving’, ‘Loving In Darkness’ and “Sink or Swim” as well as the producing for the likes of Soule, Jafaris and FLYNN among other Irish Artists in recent years. Full of feel good vibes, the track was written by Jake Carter and Irish songwriter Conor McQuaid at The Nucleus Studio in Dublin.

Speaking on the song’s origins, Jake says: “It was a song we wrote during lockdown through zoom, and then finished in studio. It started off with an extremely catchy bass riff which we then built the song around. We tried to keep the riffs and vocal melodies as catchy as possible, and with the help of the guys at Diffusion Lab, I really think we did just that.”

Liverpool born but Ireland based since he was 18, Jake Carter, still only 23, has already made a name for himself in the world of creative arts through his victory on Dancing With The Stars as well as acting roles in a number of stage shows. While he enjoys the idea of continuing to bring that triple threat of acting, dancing and singing, music is Jake’s first love. The 23-year old is now seeking to firmly establish himself as a pop star in the mould of Olly Murs and Justin Timberlake and to create music that reflects who he really is and not who people think he should be.

Jake Carter has plenty more songs in the pipeline and looks set to build upon the success he’s had so far and make a name for himself in the music industry. With over 500k total streams on Spotify as well as 500k+ views on his YouTube channel, combined with appearances on The Ray D’Arcy Show and The Late Late Show, shows at Vicar Street and Cork Opera House as well as radio slots on Today FM, 2FM, Spin1038 and more, the future’s looking bright.

‘I Just Gotta Take You Home’ the brand new single from Jake Carter is out across all digital platforms on 25 February 2022.
