Patrick stefan Shares ‘Head Voices’, the First Single from his Debut Album

Patrick stefan is an Irish-Dutch singer and wayfarer; born in Co. Clare now based in Dublin, he’s travelled & lived in different corners of the world from Scandinavia, Brazil to Africa. Inspiration for his songs come from a colourful background of experience: learning tribal songs in Mali, jazz guitar in Boston, folk singing in Helsinki and drumming in north Brazil. His songs have been compared in sound to Paul Simon, Jose Gonzalez, Sufjan Stevens, Nick Drake, James Blake, Milton Nascimento and Peter Broderick.  After much wayfare, Patrick Stefan is releasing his debut album of songs in September 2022.

Today, Patrick shares Head Voices, the first single from his debut album wayfare. The music video was shot in Paris, with the help of Lucy Shuyao Lü, directed & edited by Patrick stefan with post-production help from Cara Gaynor.

Head Voices is written from the idea that big dreams gain power if you keep them to yourself and instead let them flow through your actions. “The idea took on a new meaning while journeying for four months; first in Brasil & then Mali, West Africa,” says Patrick.

“Eagerly wandering foreign shores, field recorder in hand, I was welcomed & granted privileges on account of my efforts to speak the local musical language. A one-hour guitar lesson could easily turn into a day of playing music and eating with the whole family. This brought me close to all sorts of characters and my mind would inevitably start comparing our fortunes, or Head Voices – those things we dream and say only to ourselves.

The song addresses the tension between my fortunes & ambitions and those of my hosts, featuring imagery and fragments of my interactions and (mis)-understandings.” Head Voices quotes west African melody and Brazilian rhythm, and in the music video shares scenes from this four-month voyage around the global south.

Myles O’Reilly Announces New Album – A Collection of Ambient Folk Songs & Shares First Song ‘The Most Colourful Thread In The Loom’

“I’m tired of being the one to listen, now I’ll make some music, and make it love me” a line from Cocooning Heart, the title track on Myles O’Reilly’s forthcoming album due for release 30th June 2022.

Myles O’Reilly is a musician, composer, and filmmaker from Dublin. Since first lifting a camera in 2010, multitasking O’Reilly has filmed, directed and edited over 100 music video promos and 20+ music documentaries of Irish musicians at home and abroad, some of which include Glen Hansard, Villagers, Imelda May, Lisa O’Neill, Ye Vagabonds, Sinead O’Connor and Lisa Hannigan, alongside other international artists such as Hollywood soundtrack virtuoso Ernst Reijseger, Icelandic artists Soléy, Múm, and Amiina, US soul phenomenon Janelle Monae, and UK folk trio The Staves.

Early life as a working musician began for Myles in 2003 with the band Juno Falls. Signed for two albums by Sony UK and then V2 records, Juno Falls disbanded in 2010.

Ten years later and in a global pandemic lockdown, Myles returned to making music and has since composed, recorded, and released two minimal ambient albums, Cabin Light’s Off (2020) and My Mothers Star (2021), followed now by this new collection ambient folk songs titled ‘Cocooning Heart’.

The first taster from the album is out now, ‘The Most Colourful Thread in the Loom’. Speaking of the song, Myles says:

“The Most Colourful Thread In The Loom is a song directly inspired by my love for my wife Aideen, the life we have weaved together, and are yet to weave. Having experienced a difficult loss that put a strain on our marriage, even in the depths of despair she remained the most beautiful and loving person I know.”

THE EXPERIENCES THAT HAVE LED TO ‘COCOONING HEART’…

Always evident in O’Reilly’s music documentary film work has been his deep adoration and passion for music but most important to note, having once been a working musician himself, for over a decade his willingness to prioritize his subject’s love for performing music above his own is perhaps what is most poignant about this long-overdue role reversal. “It took a pandemic lockdown for me to have nobody to cast a lens on but myself”.

“At 10 years old I was pretty much the same person I am today. Watching my Dad make bad television, thinking I knew how to do it better. Impersonating my favourite pop singers”. Myles’ mother Monika championed his creativity, perhaps to a fault, especially his singing, “I got away with murder in school. My teachers told mum I showed no interest in any subject and was certain to fail my leaving cert but it didn’t matter to her, as long as I kept singing”. Most parents regularly check on their children to make sure they’re applying themselves to homework, “Mum would pass my bedroom door and if she heard me belting out a song, I was left alone”.

Signed to a major label in his mid 20’s, the reality of the music business hit Myles hard in 2008 in a global economic crisis. His label V2 records, home to his favourite band Elbow, suddenly and without warning liquidated. “My album was due to be released the day I read about their bankruptcy in the paper”. It was the catalyst for Myles turning to his second love, photography, and film but he would persist with music, only as subject matter for his inquisitive lens.

“Mum died from cancer in 2013. I made a promise at her deathbed that I would sing again” but no sooner had the tragedy of her loss occurred than he himself suffered a life-changing near-death accident. “It took me over a year to learn how to speak again without slurring every word”. In a collision with an extremely violent bacteria, Myles lost the use of half his tongue. “The doctors told me I would eventually regain my speech but articulating certain words would be a permanent difficulty for me. So that was it really. I had no more hopes for singing”.

The pandemic of 2020 had its challenges for everyone, but with Myles working specifically in music, there were several projects evolving that weren’t just put on hold but cancelled outright. “The first two weeks on the sofa staring at the ceiling were the longest two weeks of my life. I was completely grief-stricken”. Given that his previous dice with mortality was compounded by a battle with his immunity, in lockdown he was ‘Cocooning’, and not taking any chances. “I went from being constantly on the road, to suddenly being exiled at home.

“My wife Aideen took to drawing and painting, but I didn’t know what to do with myself”. In a moment of inspiration, he thought to text his neighbour Rod, to ask if he had any instruments lying around that he could borrow. “Moments later Rod knocked on my door wielding a Moog synthesizer. It had a hundred buttons. I thought to myself, this is perfect. It’ll take me ages to figure out what each knob does. A perfect time filler”.

The album title track Cocooning Heart was written and recorded that night. “Flood gates opened. I was in my attic, whispering into a mic so my wife couldn’t hear me. There were moments when I cried profusely. I was reunited with the act of writing music, and nothing else mattered. Every lyric of that song is exactly what was on my mind that night, in that reunion”.

Indeed every track on Cocooning Heart does carry a feeling as though it was recorded in the intimacy of a home, late at night. The gentle whirr of a laptop is accompanied by a whistling wind noise from outside, where cats can be heard fighting. A kettle is warming up. The dull racket of a shower from next door. In listening, the listener is very much transported into Myles’ attic. It’s an ode to life within those walls, and to living there with his wife.

modernlove. Release ‘Islands’, Announce New EP ‘Oh My Mind’ and Debut Headline Tour

After a flurry of praise for their recent singles ‘Don’t Wanna’, ‘Us’ and their Valentine’s Day delight ‘Follow You’ earlier this year, which have since found support from countless tastemakers including Wonderland, Hot Press, Official Charts, Under The Radar and many more, Irish indie-pop-rockers modernlove. have now announced the details of their eagerly-awaited new EP ‘Oh My Mind’, which arrives on July 29th through Akira Records (Phoria, Henry Green, Mt. Wolf, Rosie Carney, Shura), alongside the heartfelt new effort ‘Islands’.

Featuring all of their singles so far in 2022, the seven-track sophomore collection sees the band continue their pursuit of bright and vibrant pop-rock textures that have seen them go from strength to strength these last few years. The latest offering ‘Islands’ cements that captivating benchmark within their catalogue to date, and makes for the ideal companion track to introduce their newest EP.

Adding about the new single, they said, “Islands is a classic coming of age story. Trying to cope with the fallout of a family coming apart due to divorce and one’s own romantic relationship coming to an end at the same time. It tells the story of both, blurring them into one at times.

“The song is about the distances between people in their relationships and how for some, it seems too impossible a task to even try to bridge those gaps.

These people are made into “islands” by the oceans they must travel each day to meet and see each other eye to eye.

“The song explores ways people try to deal with this struggle and this loneliness whether it be drink, drugs or sex but in the end it recognises that they are simply in a painful situation that they must accept and let happen as the song ends with the repeated words: “It’s coming apart and I can’t face it, I don’t wanna break down but I can’t take it”.

This summer, When Next We Meet is launching its brand with two separate nights of live music in an immersive festival-like experience. Set on the grounds of Clonmel’s Raheen House Hotel, the quaint charm of the walled gardens & the calming quiet of its surroundings will be transformed for two nights into an adult sized playground. A taster, if you will, of what is to come in 2023.

“We want to place Clonmel back on the map as a tour stop for current Irish artists. We want the subsequent knock on effect to develop original music and music audiences here. The town has a rich history with music and the arts, and already has incredible and established outlets here for people with an interest in music. Not all music fits under one umbrella though, and our focus is on contemporary original Irish artists and the talent that exists in Ireland. We want to see everyone celebrating this and the place we’re from – in the place we’re from.” Kate Twohig (curator and co-founder of When Next We Meet)

Over two nights this summer, award nominated Irish artists will share the experience with local emerging acts, and a 400 person large Tipperary audience.

On Friday July 1st, the incredible Soda Blonde fronted by Faye O’Rourke (Little Green Cars) and the uncompromising singer/multi-instrumentalist John Francis Flynn will take to the stage, with local folk act The Wood of O opening the event.

On Saturday July 2nd things take an electronic turn with Clonmel based songwriter and producer Vale opening, before Elaine Mai brings snappy electronic textures and beats to the stage, featuring Sinead White and former Fight Like Apes and Le Galaxie front woman May Kay on guest vocals. Houseplants take to the stage for what promises to be an on your feet, dance all night affair with this electronic collaboration of producer Daithi and Bell X1 frontman Paul Noonan.

RTÉ To Air Other Voices Damien Dempsey Special This Thursday

This Thursday, Other Voices will dedicate the final episode of its landmark twentieth series to the national treasure that is Damien Dempsey.

This one hour special revisits iconic performances from across two decades of Other Voices, going all the way back to his first appearance on series one. Having first played the show in December 2002, this unique and brilliant musician has performed on the Other Voices stage several times since. Damien returned to Dingle last November to bookend the festival’s twentieth-anniversary celebrations with a cathartic and emotional live performance in the Church of St James.

“I was reared on the singsong. Singing is very important to the human being. It’s meditative. When I sing, I feel better, when I write music, I feel better. Music is a part of the journey of healing trauma.”
Damien Dempsey

“Damien Dempsey sings with a heart full of soul. When he first travelled West on the road to Dingle twenty years ago he stood on the stage in the Church of St James and mesmerised everybody who was in that small room with his power and with his passion. This show marks out his journey as he made his life in song over two decades. His career-spanning set of songs at Other Voices this year was one of the most remarkable and affecting performances that I have ever seen.” Philip King, Other Voices Founder

The episode will feature highlights from his many performances as well as an intimate and powerful conversation with MayKay. Throughout the episode the pair reminisce on memories of Other Voices, discuss the critically acclaimed music documentary Love Yourself Today and explore his unique ability to provide healing through song.

“Damien Dempsey’s shows are like nothing else. And when people say that they’re healing, they’re not lying. It’s a bit like therapy. You get out of it what you put in and if you go to a Damo show with an open heart and mind, you’ll become a better person. Last December in Dingle was the first Other Voices that had crowds back again since Covid hit. We were all squished into St James’ Church together like fizzy sardines. It was emotional and uplifting and healing. He gives so much of himself every time and the cross-section of people that his words and music speak to is so incredible. This show was definitely a highlight for me and I’m sure for everyone else in the room. I think the Other Voices and Tiny Ark crew did an amazing job of capturing that for people watching at home. God Bless Damo.” MayKay, Other Voices Presenter

The episode will be available to watch worldwide via the RTÉ Player and on RTÉ2 in Ireland at 11pm on Thursday 19 May.

Ghost Boy Set to Release Debut Single ‘Reach For The Stars’

Ghost Boy (Michael Moore) is an independent Hip Hop Artist, Rapper and Producer from Galway, Ireland. He started making and releasing music in 2020, using the time in lockdown to learn music production. He produces all of his own tracks, taking inspiration from Kanye West and Brockhampton when it comes to making beats.

Combining classic hip-hop motifs and daring production with a pop influence, his style leads to an alternative hip-hop sound that stems from mixing samples with his own melodies.

Ghost Boy has recently started writing features and producing for other Irish artists.

‘Reach For The Stars’ is an alternative hip hop song by Galway artist Ghost Boy. It’s a song about having confidence in yourself and your own journey, even if it doesn’t seem to make sense to other people. It’s about believing in yourself. The song was produced by Ghost Boy and it is his debut single. The whole song has a crunchy and distorted sound to it. The instruments and vocals are beautifully distorted to lean into the way the subject matter is being explored. Ghost Boy puts a lot of power into his vocals to show that he has total belief in himself and what he’s doing.

The point of the song is to encourage others to do the same, to pursue something meaningful. To reach for the stars regardless of what anyone else thinks. The song serves as a response to some of the negative comments he received online when he started putting music out there for people to see.

The main instrument you can hear is a beautiful church organ that’s being juxtaposed and drowned out by the lush, fuzzy guitar that features heavily throughout. The guitar on the track was recorded by Galway indie artist Uisce Jones in his home studio. It adds a nice sense of live instrumentation on top of the digital instruments.

The song’s chorus highlights Ghost Boy’s commitment to reaching great heights when it comes to making music and art. Ghost Boy hopes that by exuding confidence on this track, he will inspire others to follow in their own pursuits and ignore the naysayers.

‘I Like to carry myself away, let my desires burn with a freedom.’

‘It Really Is A Good Life’  is about those moments of clarity you experience in your waking and sleeping life which can show you how wondrous, beautiful and fleeting universe given life actually is.  Throughout all the hardships, tragedies and traumas that can come into our experience in this world, actual life is such a beautiful and curious thing.

This is Niamh Murphy’s first song release as a solo artist. The pandemic had stunted Niamh’s ability to write for a while but as she emerged from the lockdowns with the rest of us, she was energised to start writing songs again. A long time super fan of Declan Sinnott – musician, writer and producer – the two came together and worked on the production of a new album and this is the first track to be released with a long overdue album to drop early 2023.

Earlier in her career, Niamh formed Foxglove releasing their first EP in 2012 with critical praise from Steve Lillywhite, Paul McLoone, Cormac Battle, Jackie Hayden, Hot Press, The Ticket and RTE for her work winning an International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in 2014. Ye Vagabonds Relase New Album ‘Nine Waves’

Ye Vagabonds share their second album for Rough Trade’s River Lea label today.
Nine Waves was recorded in the Dublin Mountains at Hellfire Studios, produced by John ‘Spud’ Murphy (whose previous work includes records by black midi, Lankum and caroline). The album features 11 tracks of both traditional and original songs and tunes.

Nine Waves follows the duo’s standalone single I’m A Rover, which won them an RTE Radio One Folk Award for Best Traditional Folk Track. Ye Vagabonds were also named Best Folk Group for the second time at the 2021 ceremony, where they hold the record for most awarded artists.

The brotherly harmonies and multi-instrumental abilities of Diarmuid and Brían Mac Gloinn were joined on Nine Waves by Kate Ellis (cello) and Caimin Gilmore (double bass), both members of the Irish contemporary classical group Crash Ensemble, and Ryan Hargadon (Anna Mieke, Rachael Lavelle, Kojaque) on piano and saxophone. The record also features concertina from Cormac Begley, and harmonium from regular touring member of Ye Vagabonds, Alain McFadden.

Speaking of the album, Ye Vagabonds say:

“This album is dedicated to the memory of Andrew Early, Fuad Nahdi and Fatima Abbas, to their remarkable friendship, wisdom and humour.

In March 2021, surrounded by plants and instruments at Brían’s place in Wicklow, a shape started to emerge from writing we’d done over the course of two years.

Small birds kept tapping on the windows of the house while we wrote and recorded demos.

The following September, Spud helped us to capture and craft the nine songs and tunes on this album. Tuaim and Fuaim were improvised in-studio by Alain, Kate, Caimin and ourselves.

At any other time, for various reasons, we couldn’t have written these songs. We might have written others but not these.”

Seba Safe Shares New Single ‘I’m On Fire’

After sharing ‘Oscars’ last month, his debut release for Nettwerk, up-and-coming Irish singer-songwriter Seba Safe (real name Michael D’Alton) has released ‘I’m On Fire’, another heartfelt piece that showcases his warm vocals and impeccable songwriting.

The track features poetic lyrics that take you on a scenic journey along the coastal lines in Ireland. Seba Safe weaves together a beautiful story about his muse – a story about love and loss.

“This song is about not feeling good enough for anyone and finding the differences between you and others to use as validation to end things,” D’Alton explained. “The choruses deal with happier times when things felt better to try again. I blame myself for the relationship ending but ultimately know it was never going to work.”

One of the most interesting songwriting talents to emerge from Ireland’s shores in the last year, ‘Oscars’ and ‘I’m On Fire’ is his first new material since the success of his debut EP Map Runner and these new tracks marks a strong label debut for the Galway musician, giving a glimpse on what’s to come.
