Declan O’Rourke Announces ‘Since Kyabram’ 20th Special Edition Anniversary album + live shows

In October 2004, amongst a thriving Dublin music scene, Declan O’Rourke’s debut album Since Kyabram was released. In its first week, Since Kyabram entered the charts at no.5 and over the following two years achieved gold, platinum, and twice platinum status. The Album held within it a collection of songs which have grown in popularity over the years. Galileo, Sarah, No Place to Hide, We Didn’t Mean To Go To Sea and Marrying The Sea are amongst the titles which led to Award nominations and plaudits from Paul Weller, Eddi Reader, Paul Brady and Snow Patrol.

To celebrate the milestone, Declan has announced a 20th Anniversary special edition re-issue of Since Kyabram on vinyl and CD, complete with the original record and second disc of new bonus material, plus anniversary concerts live at Cork, Dublin, and Belfast, this October-November.

Declan says: “I recently went digging through some long-buried old boxes and, well, I could not have believed what I would find. Listening to the Master tapes there were multiple takes of almost every song, with banter between them, and much laughter. There were studio rehearsals and demos. I’d kept a diary, and reams of papers ranging from my own handwritten studio notes to early sketches of the lyrics, photos galore, and even a note with directions to the studio. If you are a fan of Kyabram you will love this Anniversary Edition.

As we take this journey, I will share all sorts of its the treasures with you. Follow me over the months ahead as I relive and scale the mountain once more that was the planning, recording, and release of my first record.”

***

Hot Press voted Since Kyabram their Debut Album of the Year and without doubt its release jump started a career which introduced Declan to an audience who have been on this journey with him for 20 years.

“Since Kyabram is a record I’m very proud of, both as an introductory body of work and a

collection of songs individually. After 20 years I’m still hugely nostalgic for it and love that it has become a favourite for so many others. To celebrate and release Kyabram all over again, this time with a deeper dive inside the tapes, is going to be such a trip. Being fully immersed in the music once more for just a handful of special 20th Anniversary concerts will also be a very exciting!” ~ Declan O’Rourke

Muldoon’s Picnic tours Ireland next week

Monday 13 – Friday 17 May, 2024

Galway, Armagh, Wexford, Dublin

Featuring Paul Muldoon with special guests Glen Hansard, Roddy Doyle, Liz Nugent, Anne Enright, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Donal Ryan, Hugh Buckley, Sile Denvir, and many more.

After a successful Irish tour in 2017, 2019, and again in 2022, as well as ten sold out seasons at the Irish Arts Center in New York, Muldoon’s Picnic returns for four dates nationwide 13 – 17 May 2024.

An omnium-gatherum of poetry, prose and music, Muldoon’s Picnic is a cabaret-style evening, by turns witty, exuberant, and sophisticated, hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, ‘the most significant English-language poet born since the Second World War’, (Times Literary Supplement).

Each show on the tour has a bespoke mix of artists from the worlds of music and literature. Guests such as Glen Hansard, Roddy Doyle, Liz Nugent, Anne Enright, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Donal Ryan, Hugh Buckley, Sile Denvir and many more will join Muldoon for four different evenings of creative and collaborative energy.

“A music-and-literature extravaganza” – Time Out New York

Devised and developed by the acclaimed Irish poet Paul Muldoon, the show is hosted by Muldoon and house band Rogue Oliphant – a collective of musicians and composers including Chris Harford (Three Colors, Band of Changes), Cáit O’Riordan (The Pogues), David Mansfield (Bob Dylan, The Alpha Band), Ray Kubian (Electric Six, Chris Forsyth) and Warren Zanes (Del Fuegos).

The title ‘Muldoon’s Picnic’ refers to a popular 19th-century New York vaudeville act, which inspired the New York based Paul Muldoon to begin hosting these carefully blended evenings of literature and music back in 2014.

Paul Muldoon describes ‘Muldoon’s Picnic’ as a direct response to that ancient impulse to perform, to share, to make one’s own amusement; “It’s one of our most basic instincts; to listen to a song, listen to a poem. Even in this era when people have their noses stuck in their tablets, it still works.”

On Monday 13 May, kicking off the Irish tour from the Town Hall Theatre stage in Galway, Paul Muldoon and house band Rogue Oliphant will be joined by Booker Prize winning novelist Anna Burns, one of the leading Irish poets of their generation Padraig Regan, and Oscar winning musician Glen Hansard.

The Market Place Theatre in Armagh on Wednesday 15 May will be the venue for one of Ireland’s most beloved poets and recent TS Eliot Prize nominee Jane Clarke. Jane will be joined by the sounds of composer and musician Colm Mac Con Iomaire as well as internationally acclaimed author and Booker Prize winner Anne Enright.

On Thursday 16 May at Wexford Arts Centre, Tipperary-born author Donal Ryan, singer and harpist Síle Denvir and talented poet Nithy Kasa will be the guests.

The final night of the tour, Friday 17 May, brings Muldoon’s Picnic to the Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, where Muldoon will be joined by Dublin-born novelist, dramatist, screenwriter and Booker Prize winner Roddy Doyle , guitarist, composer and author Hugh Buckley, Irish language poet Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh and author and crime novelist Liz Nugent.

Poetry Ireland has a growing reputation for producing dynamic literature events on a significant scale.  This tour will introduce audiences to some of the finest writers and musicians performing today.

For further information on all events see www.poetryireland.ie

Produced by Poetry Ireland and supported by an Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Arts Council of Northern Ireland Touring Grant.

Man Alive shares first track from new EP coming this Summer – ‘Miles Away’

MANALIVE SHARES THE NEW SINGLE ‘MILES AWAY’ – LISTEN HERE

WATCH THE VIDEO DIRECTED BY AISLING BEA HERE

Mark Prendergast’s Man Alive project and debut EP ‘Colours’ presented a very different side to an artist best known for his international success with Kodaline – in the words of Clashsomething more tender, more personal, and openly emotive.” Now Man Alive shares the new single ‘Miles Away’ together with a video written and directed by his friend Aisling Bea as he prepares to release his second EP ‘Hiding’ this summer. Listen HERE. Watch the official video HERE.

Drifting like a mid-afternoon daydream, ‘Miles Away’ possesses the intimacy and DIY vibe of the current bedroom indie-pop scene with a kinship to the songcraft and laid-back grooves of ‘80s sophistic-pop. The song’s atmosphere casts a warm, comforting presence but there’s a darker edge to the lyrics. At first it feels like a postcard of the kind of day we all occasionally need to decompress and rediscover our spark. But by the end it feels like the experience of someone who is becoming swamped by their worries and insecurities: “Hiding from my neighbour, hiding from my ex-girlfriend, hiding from the real things.”

Mark says, “‘Miles Away’ is a song I wrote during some down time where I was by myself quite a lot. I got pretty comfortable with the idea of doing nothing and seeing nobody. I gravitated towards the couch and didn’t see a way out for a while. I was happy being still. Eventually I did have to get off the couch and go record the song.”

‘Miles Away’ was produced by Mark and written with Gavin James, who also contributes bass and backing vocals.

The video for the song focuses on Mark’s homebody solitude, where his only company is an action figure doll, whose perspective frames the story. Primarily in the background, Mark appears to be happily busy doing nothing in his safe haven from the world. Yet the doll seems far more anxious: his worries feeling like a metaphor for his master’s emotional maelstrom.

The ‘Miles Away’ video was written and directed by the comedian, actress and writer Aisling Bea, who championed and supported Mark as he made the debut Man Alive EP ‘Colours’. Watch it HERE.

As ‘Miles Away’ indicates, Man Alive’s upcoming EP ‘Hiding’ takes a more naturalistic approach to the production than we heard on the intricately layered ‘Colours’ with Mark performing almost all of its instrumentation himself. Feeling like a thematic sequel to the previous EP, Its lyrics are more introspective too, as he dares to expose the thoughts and internal dialogue that’s otherwise locked away from public consumption.

Mark explains, “The EP is called ‘Hiding’ because that idea pops up quite a lot for me. I often romanticise about disappearing and being left alone for a while. My first EP was all about heartbreak and processing that. This EP is more about what goes on in my head when I’m left to my own devices. I went for a much more stripped back approach with the production. Less is more this time around.”

Man Alive will be supporting Gavin James, Live at The Marquee in Cork, Ireland on Saturday 25th May.

Scattered Ashes tackle psychosis and paranoia in new Single ‘Ether’ – out Thursday May 9th

A meditation on paranoia, psychosis, and being haunted by the past, ‘Ether’ draws its varied sonic palette of influences from The Fall, Bauhaus and Joy Division to name a few.

Spotify Pre-save

“A distant moment in a distant life, a distant voice from the other side, a past forgotten but the wounds remain, like gasoline to a naked flame.”

The band create a sense of claustrophobia throughout by employing oppressive guitars and relentless tribal drumming patterns, creating a low hum which underpins the whole song. The abrasive instrumentation is offset by an irresistibly catchy call and response chorus destined for big stages, bound to become a major earworm for future listeners.

The track is the latest to be taken from their forthcoming debut EP ‘All That Is Solid Melts Into Air‘ June 14th on Blowtorch Records https://www.blowtorchrecords.com/product-page/scattered-ashes-all-that-is-solid-melts-into-air-vinyl-ep

Scattered Ashes are an abrasive Irish postpunk four-piece based in London. The band have been featured in the likes of Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, Gigwise as-well as being heard on BBC6, KEXP and Radio X. They were most recently named as one of Louder’s 10 Irish Acts You Should be Listening to in 2024.

They subsequently released a number of singles for their two albums.

The band then began to build an enviable reputation for exciting, hi-energy shows at such venues as Whelans, The Grand Social, The Workman’s Club, Vicar Street, The Academy, The Olympia Theatre and at festivals such as Electric Picnic, Kilkenny Roots Festival and Forest Fest – of which 1000GigGuy wrote “Worth the admission fee all on its own.” They headlined a number of prestigious shows or supported such notable artists as The Undertones, The Boomtown Rats, Daddy Long Legs, The Blades and Tom Robinson.

The Stunning, Hermitage Green and The White Horse Guitar Club announced for new festival in Macroom

Macroom Music Fest
Saturday, June 22, 2024
www.macroommusicfest.ie

Following a hugely successful inaugural event last year in 2023 Macroom Music Festival returns in 2024 with more energy and a ‘stunning’ lineup. Taking place over the weekend of June 21/22/23 Macroom Music Festival in association with Cork County Council and Heineken  is pleased to announce The Stunning, Hermitage Green and The White Horse Guitar Club as its headline acts for 2024.

Taking place on Saturday, June 22, Macroom Music Festival recalls the very first open-air music festival in Ireland, The Macroom Mountain Dew Festival, which ran from 1976 until 1982 and brought Rory Gallagher to West Cork. With a new spring in its step and a brand new bypass opened in 2022 Macroom is ready to take in a breath of fresh air and invites visitors and music lovers back to the town. Taking advantage of the freedom from traffic the bypass has given the town Macroom Music Festival has become a welcome addition to the town’s event calendar. While The first Mountain Dew Festival was held in the castle grounds today Macroom Music Festival will proudly return to the gates of the Castle in the Square in Macroom town.

Early on during the planning stages in 2023 of Macroom Music Festival it was quickly established by festival organisers and the Macroom Business Association that there was a appetite for this type of community event in the area.  The one day festival featuring Mundy, The Riptide Movement and The Frank & Walters evolved into a full weekend programme that included a Music Trail and Family Day. This year’s event will continue in this vein with a Music Trail in Macroom town on Friday night. Meanwhile, a Family Day on Sunday will feature activities, games and face painting run by The Macroom Lions Club.

During the early nineties, the biggest band in the world was U2 but in Ireland it was The Stunning. In the seven years they were initially together, they toured relentlessly building up a following that would make them one of the most successful Irish bands ever. Their debut album, Paradise In The Picturehouse spent five weeks at number one and became one of the most loved Irish albums of all time. They’ve had numerous hit singles including ‘Brewing Up A Storm’, ‘Half Past Two’, ‘Romeo’s On Fire’, ‘Everything That Rises’, ‘Heads Are Gonna Roll’ and more recently ‘Brighten Up My Life’, that are still regularly heard on the airwaves today. They play a select number of show each year.

Hermitage Green has been touring sold-out shows right across the globe, entertaining fans throughout the Middle East, Australia, North America, United Kingdom and Ireland. Selling out iconic music venues and performing for thousands of people at some of the biggest festivals, this five-piece band has had the chance to share the stage with incredible artists such as Lewis Capaldi, Paloma Faith, Bastille, Two Door Cinema Club, Tom Odell, Gavin James, Sigrid, The Riptide Movement, The Trews and others.

The White Horse Guitar Club are an 11 piece band of brothers from other mothers who purvey the finest, emotion drenched folk and alt country, imbued with an Irish storytelling heart. The group have carried songs to full houses throughout Ireland, releasing their live album to widespread acclaim in 2023 and set to follow with a debut studio album in late 2024/ early 2025. ‘’There is an authenticity to the White Horse Guitar Club’s performance in which the musicians allow themselves to take all the risks while delivering a professional concert. This has the great effect of making the experience a very personal one for everyone in attendance. Good for the heart and soul-the music knows no borders’’ – Michael D. Higgins, Uachtarán na hEireann, President of Ireland.

Festival organiser Killian Lynch says: “In 2022 The people of Macroom got their town back and Macroom Music Festival was an ideal opportunity to showcase it to its full potential. Macroom is a market town in the centre of the Scenic Lee Valley and has a large community feel about. Last year was such a great success. We were so proud of the event and delighted to see so many faces back in the town. It is great to see a real buzz around Macroom town again.”

Evie announces the divine sophomore EP – ‘Shiny Things.’

Shiny Things will be released across all streaming platforms on Friday 10 May.

Shiny Things will be marked with a launch gig in Little Whelan’s on Friday 10 May.

Tipped as a songwriting triumph, Shiny Things is the rich and ethereal sophomore EP from Dublin-based musician, Evie. A five track collection of the alt-folk sound that Evie has cultivated and made her own since emerging onto the Irish music scene in 2022. Evie’s Shiny Things is as emotive as it is mesmeric.

Drawing on experiences both personal and universal, Evie delves into expressions of familial story-telling, (Paris) defiance and stoicism (Magpie, Mighty Boy) and stark self-reflection (Devil). There is no one sound at play in Shiny Things. Sometimes warming, sometimes other-worldly, but always very much tied together with Evie’s trademark arrangements. This EP features instrumental triumphs matching vast, orchestral vocals and unconventional percussion; haunting bells and traditional fiddle; delicate piano and dark drones. Evie finds unusual but beautiful combinations of sound, drawing on influences such as Radiohead, Lisa Hannigan and Laura Marling.

Astronaut is a daring opener. It’s spooky and it’s slick, teeing up Evie’s resolute sound. At number two, Mighty Boy is a dazzling exhibition of piano, fiddle and acoustic guitar, not to be outdone by its unwavering harmonies and divine crescendo. This track boasts an unpredictable, yet addictive route. Paris is the solace song, re-grounding the chaos at number three. A snug mix of intimate lyrics and a low-end soundscape, balance beautifully, the depth and delicacy of this track. Devil, a haunting track with a dark folk heartbeat, is an Evie special that lingers far beyond the four-minute mark. The depth consuming, the lyrics uncomfortable, the confidence brazen, Evie’s quality sparkles here. By Magpie, it’s stripped bare. Raw strings and linear vocals to see the collection out. Evie brings you close once more – almost like a live performance. With a final nod to the opening track, Evie closes a stunning and thrilling Extended Play. Evie says: “There is no doubt that Shiny Things is distinctive to a period in my artistic and personal life. I hope it surprises you where I absolutely surprised myself.”

Paris, Devil & Mighty Boy were released over the past few months earning acclaim from Spotify editorials, Hot Press Magazine, Golden Plec, Tradfest, Nialler9, Dublin Tilt and Void Magazine.

Shiny Things was recorded in Sun Studios, Temple Bar; produced by Jack Joyce and mastered by Killian Taylor.

About Evie

From Dublin, Evie is alt-folk with a twist. At 22, Evie is happy to be the haunted house of the Irish music scene, drawing on influences such as Radiohead, Lisa Hannigan and Laura Marling. Her debut EP ‘Since the Fire,’ released in 2022 earned nationwide acclaim.

Crowned ‘One to Watch 2024’ by Whelan’s, Dublin and ‘Hot for 2024’ by Hot Press Magazine, Evie is garnering the attention of industry and audience alike. Evie’s live performances include sold out Dublin shows, performances at the CCI Paris, the Ruby Sessions, support for Lau Noah, an appearance at the Sligo Arts Festival, Trinity Arts Festival, TradFest and Le Boom’s summer festival series 2023. Television and media appearances include Tradfest’s ‘The Fingal Sessions’ 2024 alongside Wallis Bird, presented by Hot House Flowers’ Fiachna Ó Braonáin and Hot Press’ Young and Emerging Artist Series 2023. Evie is on track to be a serious voice in the Irish music scene and beyond.

“seeing an artist know herself and her sound this early on was remarkable to watch…brazenly promising.” – Hot Press Magazine

“I dig this.” – Nialler9
