Evie announces the divine sophomore EP – ‘Shiny Things.’

May 7, 2024

Shiny Things will be released across all streaming platforms on Friday 10 May.

Shiny Things will be marked with a launch gig in Little Whelan’s on Friday 10 May.

Tipped as a songwriting triumph, Shiny Things is the rich and ethereal sophomore EP from Dublin-based musician, Evie. A five track collection of the alt-folk sound that Evie has cultivated and made her own since emerging onto the Irish music scene in 2022. Evie’s Shiny Things is as emotive as it is mesmeric.

Drawing on experiences both personal and universal, Evie delves into expressions of familial story-telling, (Paris) defiance and stoicism (Magpie, Mighty Boy) and stark self-reflection (Devil). There is no one sound at play in Shiny Things. Sometimes warming, sometimes other-worldly, but always very much tied together with Evie’s trademark arrangements. This EP features instrumental triumphs matching vast, orchestral vocals and unconventional percussion; haunting bells and traditional fiddle; delicate piano and dark drones. Evie finds unusual but beautiful combinations of sound, drawing on influences such as Radiohead, Lisa Hannigan and Laura Marling.

Astronaut is a daring opener. It’s spooky and it’s slick, teeing up Evie’s resolute sound. At number two, Mighty Boy is a dazzling exhibition of piano, fiddle and acoustic guitar, not to be outdone by its unwavering harmonies and divine crescendo. This track boasts an unpredictable, yet addictive route. Paris is the solace song, re-grounding the chaos at number three. A snug mix of intimate lyrics and a low-end soundscape, balance beautifully, the depth and delicacy of this track. Devil, a haunting track with a dark folk heartbeat, is an Evie special that lingers far beyond the four-minute mark. The depth consuming, the lyrics uncomfortable, the confidence brazen, Evie’s quality sparkles here. By Magpie, it’s stripped bare. Raw strings and linear vocals to see the collection out. Evie brings you close once more – almost like a live performance. With a final nod to the opening track, Evie closes a stunning and thrilling Extended Play. Evie says: “There is no doubt that Shiny Things is distinctive to a period in my artistic and personal life. I hope it surprises you where I absolutely surprised myself.”

Paris, Devil & Mighty Boy were released over the past few months earning acclaim from Spotify editorials, Hot Press Magazine, Golden Plec, Tradfest, Nialler9, Dublin Tilt and Void Magazine.

Shiny Things was recorded in Sun Studios, Temple Bar; produced by Jack Joyce and mastered by Killian Taylor.
