‘Together We Are Stronger’ New Release from Francie Conway

The seeds of ‘Together We Are Stronger’ were sown when Francie received a photo of a blown out apartment in Ukraine where everything was destroyed, except a guitar. Commenting on the photo as ‘a symbol of hope’, a message received back included the line “together we are stronger”.

A few days later RTE broadcast a Late Late Show, specially dedicated to the Ukrainian crisis to raise vital funds for the people affected by the Russian invasion. One of the Ukrainian guests finished his heartfelt story by saying together we are stronger. From hearing the line again, the seeds of this song started to grow.

The single features Vivienne Boucherat & Chris White from The Zombies, Swiss writer/producer/musician Dom Torche and Matt Kelleghan from the legendary Moving Hearts.

The song has just been recorded in Ukrainian by Alexandra Lisnyak from ‘The Voice Of Ukraine’, a video is currently being filmed in Ukraine and is due for release in June.

Industry Welcomes Announcement of Extension on Reduced VAT Rates

Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, has welcomed the announcement from Government yesterday of an extension of the 9% VAT rate for those operating in the Experience Economy. The extension will be an important factor in protecting demand for services against economic uncertainty, as well as ensuring the long-term viability of the Experience Economy.

Ibec Director of Membership and Sectors, Sharon Higgins said: “Today’s announcement will be a welcome relief for those companies operating in the Experience Economy who were brought to the brink as they complied with public health restrictions and are still today gradually emerging from Covid disruptions. The certainty that today’s announcement brings will enable these companies to plan a route back to viability over the coming years.

“While today’s announcement is welcome, it is important to acknowledge that it must be seen as a first step in the broader development of Ireland’s Experience Economy offering.  Industry would like to see continued investment and support to promote domestic tourism, festivals, events, and wider entertainment industry and for domestic tourism product development. In addition, there ought to be an increase in funding for overseas tourism and event promotion and product development, as well as funding to support activity to attract large scale business events, conferences, and global events such as The Gathering, to Ireland.

“In addition, we need to look beyond Covid and ensure ambitious investment is directed towards supporting life-long learning in the experience economy to promote adaption, flexibility, and future proofing.”

Youth content creators urged to protect innovation on World Intellectual Property Day

With content creation at an all-time high due to platforms such as Meta, TikTok and YouTube, the Law Society of Ireland and IMRO join forces to explore how intellectual property (IP) and IP rights (IPRs) such as patents, copyright and trademarks can be used to protect innovation and revenue on World IP Day, today, 26 April 2022.

Reflecting on this year’s World IP Day theme, IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future, IMRO Adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Law Society of Ireland, Dr Mark Hyland said, “Young people today are a key source of ingenuity and creativity. Their fresh perspectives on global and local issues, intellectual curiosity and hunger for a better future are driving innovation and change at a rapid pace. World IP Day 2022 is a fantastic opportunity to showcase how young creators can use intellectual property to protect innovation and revenue in the ever-evolving digital age.”

“Taking the music industry as an example, on-demand streaming continues to grow steadily as an important source of revenue for right holders and music creators. However, this music copyright needs to be safeguarded through IP protection. Projects, which may be small at the beginning, grow in size, create employment, bolster careers, and benefit society generally,” explained Dr Hyland.

Innovative youth leaders

“With one of the youngest populations in Europe and one of the most highly educated in the world, Ireland is a global innovation leader. Ireland’s people constitute its most significant competitive advantage. Through strategic use of IP and IPRs, Ireland’s young inventors and creators can help build a better future for Ireland and Europe.”

“A fundamental building block in our digital environment is Directive (EU) 2019/790 on Copyright in the Digital Single Market’. In particular, Article 17 of the Directive imposes heavy new obligations on online service providers, such as Meta, TikTok and YouTube, when it comes to copyright-protected works uploaded to their platforms by individual internet users,” explained Dr Hyland.

“A key part of the new liability regime is the obligation imposed on these service providers to obtain permission from copyright holders concerning protected works uploaded by users to their platforms.”

“In helping to significantly modernise the EU’s copyright regime and ensure a high level of protection for copyright holders in the EU, the Directive will be a very useful piece of legislation to protect the future of youth-led innovation and creativity,” Dr Hyland added.

Annual Copyright Lecture 2022

Dr Hyland will join James Hickey, External Director, IMRO at the IMRO and Law Society Annual Copyright Lecture 2022 to further explore the topics of copyright and IP. Together they will examine ‘Article 17 of the Digital Single Market Directive, complex and challenging in equal measure’. The complimentary conference takes place at:

  • 5:30pm-7pm on Wednesday 4 May 2022
  • Lecture Theatre, Education Centre, Law Society of Ireland
  • Advance registration is required.

‘For Me’ – A new song for the fight that is still not over

50 years ago homosexuality was decriminalised in Norway. The events that took place at the Norwegian Parliament on April 21st 1972, are an important milestone in the fight for gay rights, but the battle was not won at that – and still isn’t.

– ‘When Brendan Graham sent me the lyrics to For Me, I immediately thought of all my friends in the Oslo fagottkor choir. Through the many years we have worked together, I’ve heard so many compelling stories and I want to dedicate the song to them’, says Norwegian composer and pianist, Tove Kragset, who wrote the music, and also arranged/produced and plays on the recording of For Me.

– ‘I wrote the lyric to be an expression of individual empowerment and left it open to be an anthem for diversity and recognition, whatever the cause – gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation…whether it be as a general or, individual expression of self-realisation and identity’, says lyricist, Brendan Graham

Graham is the writer of the lyrics to You Raise Me Up, and both lyrics and music to Eurovision winners, Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids (Dublin, 1994) and The Voice (Oslo, 1996).

Bjarte Hjelmeland performs For Me with the Oslo fagottkor choir. He emphasizes the song’s current relevance in the challenges our world is facing: – ‘In times like these, music can uplift and bring us together. A song about standing up for oneself and fighting for one’s rights is a song I really want to sing!’ he states.

Hjelmeland’s statement is eagerly supported by board manager at the Oslo fagottkor choir, Andreas Birger Johansen: – ‘The Oslo fagottkor choir is a visible example of how privileged we are here in Norway. But the current situation in Europe reminds us of how quickly our freedom and rights can be taken from us, both as individuals and as a people’. This is a message we must always sing out loud’.

For Me was officially launched on April 21st, by Anette Trettebergstuen, Norwegian Minister of Culture and Equality, when premiered at a formal event at the Norwegian National Library, to mark the 50th Anniversary of the removal of Section 213 in the Norwegian Penal Code of 1902.

Lōwli releases new single ‘Epiphany’

Following on from her 2020 release ‘Cavalry’, Galway composer Lōwli (aka Roisin Lowry) has released a new single  ‘Epiphany’ taken from her upcoming EP ‘Otherworld’ which will be released later this year.

A neoclassical instrumental piece, ‘Epiphany’ opens with a playful piano melody accompanied by hushed, harmonised strings. This develops towards a powerful and cinematic peak, an energetic tapestry of weaving string melodies and arpeggiated piano. ‘Epiphany’ portrays hints of Olafur Arnalds, Max Richter and Agnes Obel, while maintaining Lōwli’s distinctively ethereal, enchanting sound.

Lōwli describes the composition: “This piece depicts the feeling of a new experience or circumstance in your life. Something that suddenly changes your perspective and allows you to feel clarity and understanding. To me, these moments of clarity can be fleeting but empowering, and I hoped to capture this feeling within this piece.”

Epiphany’ was recorded in Dublin’s Camden Studios in May 2021, supported by the MISP recording grant.

“neat spookiness with beautifully arranged melodies” – Tony Clayton-Lea, The Irish Times

“a performer with a keen sense for the dramatic twists and turns” – Jim Carroll, The Irish Times

“commanding and powerful” – Hot Press

“a treasure trove of large open soundscapes, reverb-soaked harmony, and darkly lit atmospheres” – The Last Mixed Tape
