Niamh Dunne Releases Debut Solo Album ‘Tides’

Niamh Dunne of “Beoga” fame is releasing her first solo project of self-penned songs. The upcoming album “Tides” due for release in September.

This is Niamh’s first solo project in ten years and her first ever album made up entirely of self penned songs. The album is in 2 halves; one based on story songs inspired by traditional Irish songs and the other half based on singer-songwriter style, introspective songs that look at lived experience, feminism, family, history and connection. Both halves are a reflection on her life as a musician, from her traditional roots with the Traveller family The Dunne’s right up to writing with contemporary acts like Foy Vance and Ed Sheeran in recent years. This album is a chance to lend her own voice, with all its contradictions and nuances, to the musical landscape.

After Beoga’s six albums, a shortlist for a Grammy and numerous international tours, Niamh is no stranger to reaching a wider international audience as a result of a chance encounter with Ed Sheeran, Foy Vance and Johnny McDaid. This led to the band co-writing Ed’s massive hit ‘Galway Girl’ and ‘Nancy Mulligan’ from his album Divide. They also performed as Ed Sheeran’s only special guest on his headlining Glastonbury 2017 performance and supported him on his record-breaking Irish stadium tour in 2018.

NIAMH DUNNE – TIDES – SONG NOTES

Roads of Old Tralee

This is a song about my great grandfather, The O’ Rahilly, falling in love with Nancy Brown and going to America to ask her to marry him in 1899. They returned to Ireland in 1910 and joined the Gaelic League. The O’Rahilly was killed during the Easter Rising, and as he died wrote a farewell love letter to Nancy who was then pregnant with their last child. Nancy carried on the fight for the cause and was Vice President of Cumann na mBan for a time. Delighted to have the mighty Joshua Burnside join me on this one; his voice is so evocative for folk songs and I love singing together.

Tales of Old

This is another love song dedicated to my grandparents on my Dad’s side. My grandmother Lizzie took to the roads with the travellers as a young girl and fell in love with my grandfather, the mighty fiddle player Paddy Dunne. The chorus is based on an old Gypsy proverb “We are all wanderers on this earth. Our hearts are full of wonder, and our soul are deep with dreams.”.

The Raven

I have been hugely inspired by John Spillane to explore Celtic Mythology and use it as a means of telling stories through songs. “The Raven” loosely tells the story of The Morrigan and Cu Chulainn. The Morrigan is the Celtic Goddess of War, a triple Goddess, the Queen of Death and Destiny. She is a shapeshifter and here takes the shape of a Raven who ultimately forewarns Cu Chulainn that he will be slain in battle.

Thomond Lady Fair

This song is a walk around Limerick City, encountering the ghosts of the past. It tells the famous story of the Coleen Bawn, immortalised by  by Irish  playwright  Dion Boucicault . In the Autumn of 1819, at Moneypoint, Kilrush , the remains of Ellen Hanley were found. Ellen, now known to story, drama and opera as the Colleen Bawn, was not quite sixteen years of age. Her body was washed ashore six weeks after her marriage. She had been murdered by her husband, John Scanlan, of Ballykehan House, near Bruff Co. Limerick.

The O’Rahilly

Following on from his great love story in Track 1, The Roads of Old Tralee, this is the story of my great grandfather The O’Rahilly in the 1916 Rising. He was the only leader to be killed in action that Easter. He was shot by a sniper and died in Sackville Lane just off Moore Street. As he lay dying his final act was to write a letter to his beloved wife Nancy “Tons and tons of love dearie to you & to the boys & to Nell & Anna. It was a good fight anyhow.”

Solstice

I wrote this piece with Sean Og Graham and Michael Keeney as a way to link the A side and the B side of this album together.

Hold Your Head up high

In 2018 I co-founded Fairplé with a group of amazing people, mostly women, to try and make a change in our small pocket of the world; working for gender balance and parity, tacking gender based harassment and violence. I’m really proud of everything we achieved but it also took its toll on me in my professional life as well as personal life, and I had to reckon with a lot of my own demons and past experiences. It hasn’t been easy but this song is for the extraordinary women I encountered throughout the process; we’re all standing in power, shoulder to shoulder and I have great hope that things will be better for the girls and women coming next.

Hallowed Ground

This song is about Inis Oirr. I was doing some songwriting workshops with John Spillane and he set a brief to write about a place, and to keep in the tradition of songs about places;  Cliffs of Dooneen, Carolina In My Mind… Inis Oirr is a very special place that I have been going to for most of my adult life. The landscape and the feel of the island gets under my skin, and there are incredible landmarks like the lighthouse and the Plassey shipwreck(called Juliette in a previous life)  and the ancient burial grounds. This song is in honour of a wonderful friend Gráinne who is our Keeper on Inis Oirr.

Tides

I wrote this song for my mother; a lullaby about her reading stories to me before I went to sleep as a child. Thank you Karan Casey for singing this one with me, you are my hero.

Shut your eyes tight, girl, I’ll live in your dreams,

Never far from you though far I may seem,

Don’t be afraid now just lie here with me”

Stories

I have a diary from my grandmother Bridie Clyne from 1945. My mother’s handwriting is also scattered through the pages, shopping lists and phone numbers and reminders. I have used it for song writing the last few years. I never met her but I love the idea of the 3 generations bound together through this old book. She was an amazing woman who was way ahead of her time. She died when my mother was quite young so this is sort of an imagined conversation between the three of us; we’re so connected and yet never got to meet together. And all the things I’d love us to be able to talk about; the big stories and the ordinary things.

Did You Ever Love Me

The genesis of this song comes from the Goddess Boann. She has an affair with the Dagda , who impregnates her. To hide the pregnancy the Dagda casts a spell making “the sun stand still” so no one will know of her infidelity. Boand tried to hide her infidelity with the Dagda  by washing herself in Nechtan’s well, but when she approaches it, it overcomes her, and she drowns and becomes the Boyne.

The legend has so many parallels with how we treated women in this country for generations; make the earth stand still for 9 months, locked away in Laundries and Institutions, shamed and vilified. Even the almighty Goddesses are punished for not knowing their place, for not toeing the line.

Equinox

This tune is part of the album version of this track, and not on the single version. Another co-write with Sean Óg and Michael, it’s one of my favourite parts of the album.

Niamh’s debut solo album ‘Tides’ is released on September 30th 2022

Colin O’Shea is Back with New Single ‘Hollywood On Fire’

After an enforced hiatus, Colin O’Shea is back with a fresh bag of exciting tunes and the first out of the traps is his upcoming single “Hollywood On Fire” out 30th Sept 2022. This 80’s feel electro pop tune is bound to keep the summer vibes rolling and your speakers thumping!

O’Shea had burst onto the scene in October 2017 with his debut single, the Springsteen-esque anthem, ‘Booze n’ Hangovers’. Soon after in November of same year, the Dublin songwriter released his debut album ‘Scars and Tones’, to widespread critical acclaim, with industry press comparisons such as Bruce Springsteen, Nick Cave, Bob Dylan and U2. Its positive response had set him up as one of the Irish artists to watch in 2018. O’Shea went on to make his festival debut during summer 2018 opening the famed Castlepalooza boutique Irish festival.

Back in the studio since 2019 recording his 2nd album, all was going according to plan until the global pandemic hit that put finishing the record on hold. During that period, further tragic incurred with the sudden loss of his band drummer and confidant, Paul Lynch.

However, the Dublin songwriter is now back to pick up where he left off. Teaming up once again with David Prendergast on production duties (Kodaline, Overhead The Albatross, RWYR), to complete his sophomore studio album due out March 2023, with a new single expected each month before then.

HamsandwicH to Release New Album Magnify September 30

“I think we’re always afraid of writing the same song,” says HamsandwicH guitarist Darcy ahead of their highly anticipated return with Magnify on September 30th 2022. Their forthcoming fourth album, released via their Route 109a Recordings, heralds an exciting new chapter for the trio.

On Magnify, the band incorporated an array of fresh influences and electronic soundscapes whilst maintaining melodic motifs integral to their idiosyncratic style. Of their latest body of work, Niamh reflects, “We’re a band who have constantly evolved over the years and this is our biggest evolution yet.” Initial steps towards this evolution were made when the trio entered the studio in Autumn 2019. Immediately HamsandwicH embraced the concept of making music for themselves; unconcerned with commercial success. “We’re always happy to push ourselves and take risks because we have to keep it interesting. Since we didn’t put pressure on ourselves to write songs for the radio, we felt that we could really do whatever we wanted. ‘The Next Contender’, for example, has a few different movements within the arrangement. That was a really refreshing way to write music because it gave us a great sense of artistic release,” describes Darcy.

The writing and recording of Magnify encouraged new ways of working for the band, notably collaborating with producer Michael Heffernan (Dermot Kennedy, Ailbhe Reddy, Thumper) for the first time. Working with a different cast of collaborators, including Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) as well as Emily Lazar and Chris Allgood (Beck, Haim) who mastered the record, also facilitated the band’s renewed perspective towards making music. Elaborating on their renewed artistic approach, Niamh says, “We realised during the making of Magnify that songwriting doesn’t need to be so rigid. It can be freer and that the sounds of the words you sing can be just as important to a song as the meaning behind them. It was about having fun with music and the process of it. It’s all about challenging yourself and keeping things fresh; not letting things get stale because it’s very easy to slip into a formula. That’s not something we can do, we’ve always sought to try new things. Music is so eclectic; there’s so much out there and we want to bring a similar variety into our own music and for people to connect with it.”

The application of this sentiment across their latest material has culminated in some of the band’s finest work. Writing remotely in different parts of the country (Dublin, Meath and Monaghan), swapping ideas over voice notes and recording between studios and Niamh’s kitchen over a staggered timeframe, the band’s adaptability is woven into the tapestry of Magnify’s essence. Their ease of moving from propulsive rhythms to introspective and sweet soundscapes is effortless and a testament to their remarkable musicianship and unwavering chemistry as a band. Opening with a bang, ‘Electro Wave’ hears HamsandwicH embrace an infectious 80s synth-pop arrangement, the sonic setting immediately re-contextualises Farrell and McNamee’s synonymous vocal pairing. “Do you still feel like your life’s a Saturday night?” McNamee poses throughout the track. Throughout their career, HamsandwicH have never cowered in the corner. On Magnify, they’re the life and soul of the party. Their enthusiasm is infectious. Playing with the timbre and tempo of the arrangements ultimately informed the enveloping world of the songs, as Podge reveals. “We got really inspired by the sound of the music. Tonally, ‘Fired Up’ is really intense and angry; it drew out a lot of the feelings that steered the lyrics and it came together quickly.” Impassioned performances and exhilarating instrumentation lay a solid foundation for HamsandwicH’s future, yet nostalgia and a celebration of important personal connections are crucial to Magnify’s essence. Nestled in ‘Good Friday’s’ luminous synth-laden arrangement is a recording of Derek Nally, their former manager who passed away in 2010. “‘Good Friday’ is a little bow that ties everything together on the record,” says Niamh. “A lot of the themes across the album recognise different connections between people who have been friends for a very long time and the dynamic that creates within a friendship who are all musicians. Including the snippet of Derek Nally in the middle of the song felt like we were making a kind of love note to that period in our life and paying tribute to how important he was to us, as well.” Those connections extend to friends and family lending additional backing vocals on single ‘Le Soleil’ and McNamee’s school friend, the artist Derik Smith, creating the remarkably eye-catching album artwork. Magnify is a testament to HamsandwicH’s spirited and assured artistic voice, of their penchant to be daring with their music.

IMRO Awards Presented to The Coronas

The Coronas joined us on Friday for the presentation of IMRO Awards in recognition of their albums Trust the Wire and True Love Waits.

The IMRO Number 1 Award was introduced to acknowledge IMRO members who reach number 1 in the album charts here in Ireland.

A sonic leap on from its predecessors, ‘Trust The Wire’ sees the award-winning, arena-conquering band fuse their arms-aloft melodic pop with lush electronics, spine-tingling atmospherics and a new-found sense of adventure. The album was released on their own label So Far So Good Records on 2nd June 2017 and went straight to the top of the charts, making this their first No1 album.

From its tightrope-walking title, to the content of its lyrics to its bold production, Trust The Wire brims with self-belief. Written on the quartet’s return to their native Dublin after almost four years living in London, it captures the focus they found in leaving home, the fresh perspective it gave them and a soaring maturity in their songwriting.

A decade on from their debut, having toured the world, topped the charts and surpassed their teenage dreams, it’s no surprise that The Coronas are surer of their strengths and readier to take risks. ‘Trust The Wire’ fizzes with ambition, often in ways you wouldn’t expect from a band famed for their sing-alongs.

After a rollercoaster three years, including a stint on a major label before deciding to do things their own way, spellbinding first single ‘We Couldn’t Fake It’ recounts the band’s realisation that they were right to trust their instincts, rather than be swayed by a label only seeking sales. The hypnotically-beautiful ‘Give Me A Minute’ is actually about Danny feeling antisocial after a gig, but sounds like a romantic statement of intent. Ditto the spectral ‘A Bit Withdrawn’, which is about misconceptions, but could be a plea to a lover.

The album’s title, taken from a line in the broody, dramatic closing track ‘Look At All The Lovers’, reflects the recurring theme of self-belief and sums up a band both acknowledging their achievements to date and stepping out of their comfort zone to tackle new challenges.

Like a tightrope walker who doesn’t need to see the next step, they just know.” says Danny. “It’s about believing that what feels right will work and going for it. If you don’t trust your instincts, you’ll never move on. This is our fifth album. It would be easy for us to stick with a sound because it’s worked for us in the past. But that doesn’t excite us. Discovering what we’re capable of as a band, knowing that we can grow and get better is what makes us want to keep doing this.”

‘True Love Waits’ marks the start of what is now more than a new chapter in the career of one of Ireland’s biggest, best-loved bands, it’s more like a whole new book.

A quartet for thirteen years, The Coronas became a trio when guitarist Dave McPhillips unexpectedly left. Briefly they questioned whether to continue but instead of being defeated, the band grew to see it as an opportunity. “When we accepted that we weren’t going to be the same band without him, it was easier to let the songs lead us in ways we wouldn’t have thought of before,” Danny explains.

Rather than replace Dave, we actually contemplated ditching guitars entirely. But instead we opened ourselves up to working with loads of our talented friends, mainly because the songs warranted it, and we had an amazing young producer George Murphy who knew exactly the kind of album we wanted to make.

For the first time we used real brass, there are extra guest backing vocalists, guest guitar players and our first featured duet. From early on, the guys encouraged me to use my voice differently, pushing me to try something that I wouldn’t have done previously.

Two songs had already been recorded in Los Angeles, with Hozier and PJ Harvey producer Rob Kirwan, when Danny, bassist Graham Knox and drummer Conor Egan pressed reset. But the album only really began to take shape once a raft of new songs arrived. Key to the process was Danny’s coterie of new co-writers.

“I co-wrote a little on the last two albums and loved it,” says Danny. “This time I was up for anything. I took snippets of ideas to several musician mates, mostly around Dublin and Kerry, to see what we came up with and that’s how we hit on some of the new sounds and different song structures.”

When you’re five albums in, it can be difficult to write differently on your own – you instinctively return to the same patterns. With fresh input, you’re forced down new paths, and it’s also great sharing that excitement in a room when you both know that there’s something special in the idea you’ve just created together.”

The title track ‘True Love Waits’ was written with Cian MacSweeny, frontman of Cork-formed, Dublin-based trio True Tides, one of The Coronas’ favourite bands and their recent support act. Acoustic guitar and bright synths blend to create an atmosphere of dreamy optimism, while the lyrics – ‘fuck that, take a chance’ – could as easily apply to The Coronas’ new outlook as a new relationship. Much of the song is the band’s original demo, recorded DIY in Dublin, before being completed in London with producer George Murphy.

We’ve never kept so much of our demos before,” says Danny, “but what’s great about George is he can see the magic in a moment. There’s a spontaneity to that song which we’d have lost by re-recording it. George engineered our last two albums, so he knows us very well. He’d hone in on the vibe of what we brought him. A lot of the songs had odd arrangements and he understood straight away what we were trying to do.

The unorthodox arrangements helped push The Coronas out of their comfort zone. The release of hypnotic first single ‘Find The Water’ was a shock to some, but its success told the band they were on the right path. Beginning with just piano and vocals, then breaking into an intense chant, ‘Find The Water’ soars skywards on trumpets and percussion and has Danny singing so high by the end that he’s all but unrecognisable.

Previous single ‘Cold’ may rival it for surprises. Opening on its stark, prayer-like chorus, it’s a majestic spine-chiller that shapeshifts on piano, percussion and synths. Written by Danny as a pick-me-up late one night alone in Dingle, it’s about decision-making and self-doubt. “How do you know you’ve made the right choice, about anything,” says Danny. “In the midst of so much change, you can question every decision, but what’s the point? It’s our ‘don’t get down’ song. Have confidence and move on.”

Lyrically, ‘True Love Waits’ addresses everything from a new love in Danny’s life, to looking back at past achievements with pride, to dealing with Dave’s departure.

‘Light Me Up’ flips from atmospheric to anthemic and builds to a boisterous, gospel finish featuring co-writer Cian on backing vocals. ‘Haunted’, one of two songs written with producer Cormac Butler, is a toast to a partnership – with the phrase “haunted” being Dingle-speak for “lucky”.

‘Lost in The Thick of It’ is one of the album’s highlights, a gorgeous duet with Gabrielle Aplin, written in Brighton with Gabrielle and her partner Alfie Hudson-Taylor. On the celebratory ‘Brave’, The Coronas work in a waltz. The euphoric ‘Heat Of The Moment’ they describe as their Richard Curtis love song. By the end of ‘I Think We Jinxed It’, the guitars and synths soar just much as Danny’s vocals.

We never thought we’d make six albums, or be as excited about music as we are now. It’s great that we’re not trying to compete with anyone else. We’d rather just outdo ourselves.”

The Coronas albums Trust the Wire and True Love Waits are out now on So Far So Good.

New Moon On Friday features Ellie Shine on Lead Vocals, Mary Greene on Harmonies, Acoustic Guitar and Concertina and Noel Shine on almost everything else! You will also hear regular collaborators David Murphy on Pedal Steel and Martin Leahy on Drums.

Previous singles including Dandelion Seed, The Good is Gone and The Girl in the Lavender Dress all reached number 1 in the RTERadio1 Airplay Chart with The Girl in the Lavender Dress going on to become the second most played Irish track of the year of its release on the station.
