Floor Staff to Release Debut Album “Attention”

When he played Floor Staffs single ‘Empathize’ recently, Today FM DJ Ed Smith told his listeners that the song was taken from the album ‘Attention’ and commented that Dubliner Anthony Donnelly’s upcoming debut, “will be getting a lot of attention if that song is anything to go by.”

Floor Staff has been releasing music since 2014 and although he has been highly regarded by music fans and media in that time for making “sophisticated, alternative pop” (The Irish Times) and “a deeply personal and delightful pop sound” (Wonderland), he recently took a four year hiatus to work on his sound. Donnelly had obviously spent his time well while outside the studio, because this summer he has returned in a prolific way – treating us to singles in June (‘Aspiration’), July (‘Empathize’) and August (‘The Occupants Rotate’).

The singles are all taken from Floor Staff’s debut album ‘Attention’, which is being self-released on Friday, 27th August 2021.

Anthony Donnelly says: “Since I last released music I moved out of Dublin and was living on a farm in Kilkenny for a while. It was really beautiful; a really wonderful place. I had a lot of space and time there to process some things that had happened in my life. Over the last few years I’ve been doing some teaching in the area of music which has been nice because I have gotten to be involved in music without pressuring myself, especially during those times when I wasn’t feeling so creatively charged or artistically free. The act of explaining to students that the songwriting process can be really simple, that it’s subjective, that they are totally entitled to express themselves and that everything they create has genuine value… These have been things I feel I have been coming to understand for myself again it’s re ignited my passion for the creative process.”

Never one to shy away from the personal, with his 2017 EP ‘Convictions’, Donnelly showed just how introspective good pop music can be, confronting bereavement, fidelity and self-esteem, cathartically transforming these concerns into joyous and catchy expressions of dark pop. Thematically, this album, ‘Attention’, reflects on the turmoil of loss and regret but sets it against a broad horizon of possibility, playing on the freedom of uncertainty and the urgency of hope that accompanies a personal reckoning.

Anthony says: “This album is certainly more direct then the other releases and It does feel very strange to speak more directly but it’s also pretty liberating. Maybe I’m settling into myself a little more, so I’m a bit more concerned with going with whatever comes out and accepting it as it is without considering how it could be perceived.”

Floor Staff’s first release ‘The Good Luck EP’ received critical acclaim, leading to touring of Ireland and the UK, substantial radio play and festival appearances including Other Voices, Electric Picnic, and twice at the prestigious Ireland Music Week. The video for lead single ‘The Guest’, directed by Bob Gallagher, won the Nikon Music Video Award.

This new album from Floor Staff retains all of the shimmering production quality and intricate vocal stylings we’ve come to expect.

He says: “I think, production-wise, I like to try to land on something that feels honest and reflects correctly the song’s original intent. Production is definitely important to me, whether that’s polished in style or something more messy, abrasive or low-fi. At one point on this album, there is a low quality phone recording of a squeaky gate that I passed once in Tipperary for example. It sounds pretty hellish and abrasive on the track but I feel it reflects the feeling of an all conquering, overpowering anxiety pretty well. In production terms, I’d say the low quality of the recording actually adds something and makes it even more ominous. I do have time for things sounding quite polished if the moment is right and if the song calls for it. I think sometimes the word pop can bring to mind a struggle for perfection or consistent painstaking over production. So I find myself pushing back against that at times… and that can be really satisfying.”

Ubuntu Music Signs The Kevin Brady Electric Quartet for Album Release

Ubuntu Music is delighted to announce the signing of The Kevin Brady Electric Quartet for ‘Plan B’, their upcoming worldwide album release on 8th October.

The Kevin Brady Electric Quartet has a clear aim of creating and producing new contemporary jazz and the impact of this has been immediate. Their performances have been critically acclaimed for their dynamism and musicality. Touring regularly, they have consolidated their worldwide reputation as a compelling live act. As quoted by The Telegraph UK,  “This group display an enviable poise and togetherness,” winning the appreciation of discerning jazz audiences in the USA, Europe, UK, China. Their music embraces imaginative creativity and contributes to the evolution of exciting and engaging improvised music.

‘Plan B’ is the latest studio album by acclaimed drummer and composer, Kevin Brady. It features the stellar musical talents of U.S. saxophonist Seamus Blake, Bill Carrothers on Fender Rhodes, and bassist Dave Redmond. Brady’s ambition was to record an album that consisted of new, original compositions that explore improvisation in an electric quartet format. While tipping their collective hat to the music of the 1970s Miles Davis Group, along with the groove and funk based music of Herbie Hancock, many of the musical themes deal with the impact of what is happening in the world as we know it now. The music is hypnotically insistent, all with a lasting story of experience and optimism.

Kevin describes the sound of ‘Plan B’: “This is one of the most musically connected experiences that I have had since my first outing as a leader in 2007. While I was working with the late great guitarist Larry Coryell, I had many insightful discussions with him about music. His suggestion for my group to explore a change to an electric format was hugely influential on my new musical direction. I had been performing with Bill Carrothers and Dave Redmond in a piano trio for many years and I was excited to hear how we would perform with this new instrumentation. The inclusion of my friend and wonderful saxophonist Seamus Blake made a significant impact on how the trio performed. Seamus added an incredible musical dimension and texture to the compositions. His musicality added so much to the work. The music–whether simple or complex–was brought to another level by Bill and Dave’s strong melodic and rhythmic understanding and intuition. I believe that each composition–whether groove based, free or in odd meters–encapsulates and blends elements of musical styles that each musician in this quartet really enjoys playing.”

Kevin discusses his new relationship with Ubuntu Music: “I am delighted to begin this new relationship with Ubuntu. the company’s ethos is a perfect fit for me as an artist. The projects that Martin Hummel currently works with is a testament to his belief in nurturing and developing great music. After many discussions with him, it was apparent to me that he has a huge appreciation for music and developing the audience for it. He has such an in depth understanding of this genre of music and it’s a real honor to be included on Ubuntu Music’s artist roster. I am really looking forward to releasing this recording project and continuing our journey into the future.”

Martin Hummel, Director of Ubuntu Music, shares his perspective: “It’s a blessing to have the opportunity to work with Kevin and his band. I was fortunate to have the privilege to have Dave perform on an earlier Ubuntu release with pianist George Colligan, along with Seamus on an album with Eric Alexander. And now these guys come together with Bill Carrothers and you have one very serious jazz music cocktail. It’s a pleasure to have them join the Ubuntu Music Family.”

The Academic Host World-First Live Animation Performance via Google Slides

Fast-rising Irish band The Academic are proud to unveil the results of a world-first live animation video for their new single, ‘Not Your Summer’. The video originally aired in real-time to 300 lucky Academic fans on Thursday 15th July using the method of Google Slides.

Watch footage of the video being made ‘behind the scenes’ HERE

To execute the performances, The Academic tapped up BBDO New York and Open the Portal animation studio. Through collaboration with a team of animators, they created new slides every second.

The Academic: “One of the things we’ve missed most throughout this pandemic has been interacting with our fans and creating unforgettable moments for them through music. We were thrilled to collaborate with BBDO and Open The Portal to create this totally new, virtual musical experience in Google Slides. Not only was it a clever way to say ‘hi’ to our fans, but we live for finding these new techy ways to make our music stand out from the rest.

The animation is loosely based on the song’s lyrics, which speaks of the isolation experienced throughout 2020, and the internal conflicts none of us could have predicted. Fans who aren’t able join the livestream (100 per event) will be redirected to YouTube to view the video and band interaction live.

The Academic have a history of innovative tech firsts, working on an award winning ‘Live Looper’ event via Facebook Live for an early single, ‘Bear Claws’, also alongside BDDO New York.

The Academic’s ‘Community Spirit’ EP is out now.

The EP sees the Mullinger 4-piece honing their knack for epitomising the excitement and apprehension that one meets at the intersect between youth and adulthood, without a hint of cynicism or pretence. These are sky-scraping, heart-on-the sleeve anthems, accented with guitar hooks which immediately take up residency in the head of anyone who listens.

Having collaborated with Kaiser Chief’s Nick Hodgson on last year’s ‘Acting My AgeEP, this new collection of tracks will mark The Academic stepping into the producer’s role, unquestionably developing as musicians with each thumping release that passes.

Following a spot on the Main Stage later this month at the Reading & Leeds Festival, The Academic will embark upon a full tour in spring 2022.

Ardú Share ‘The Phoenix’

Following on from their recent release of ‘To Feel The Power Of Love’ (Carl Corcoran), Ardú are proud to release ‘The Phoenix’ (Corcoran/McGann), originally conceived in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.

Art McGann and Carl Corcoran have collaborated many times. Initially in the Jamie Stone-age,(Corcoran’s pseudonym in the 70s). Art, a master of words, has constructed a work of beauty in response to the emotive melody of ‘The Phoenix’. The song saw several iterations over its 20 years in existence, and last November, in anticipation of the 20th Anniversary this year Ciaran Kelly (Ardú Artistic Director) dressed the song in these beautiful choral clothes.

The World Premiere recently performed as part of MusicTown 2021 Festival in April featuring Ardú and members of The Palestrina and St. Mary’s Cathedral Choirs, is the first step in the journey for ‘The Phoenix’, with obvious connections to Commemorations in September.

The song encapsulates the images of a tragic day, September 11 2001 including ‘images’ of Fr. Mychal Judge, Chaplin to FDNY and son of immigrants from Leitrim, while celebrating the resilient nature of mankind, and in particular America at this time. The lyric echoes the words of Emma Lazarus on the plaque of the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses.”  The music reflects the spirit of strength and defiance of the aftermath rather than the shock of the day – hence the title ‘The Phoenix’. Ciarán Kelly’s beautiful arrangement captures the essence of the songwriters’ endeavours.

Erica Cody to Release Sensuous New Single ‘Back To Basics’

Dublin R&B artist Erica Cody is a leading figure in the Irish music scene, garnering national airplay and gracing the cover of top publications such as Sunday Independent’s Life Magazine. Her infectious sound has seen support from key Spotify playlists like New Music Friday and tastemaker outlets including Notion Magazine. The singer exudes a confidence in her brand of classic 90s R&B, a confidence that has seen her share the stage with living legends En Vogue. Fresh off the back of her last single, which went straight to No. 1 on the Irish iTunes Charts, Erica is back with her sensuous new release ‘Back To Basics’, out 20th August.

‘Back To Basics’ is her most confident release to date, and the first taster of Erica’s forthcoming EP. It is raw and honest, looking boldly at the concept of baring all in infatuation. The highly-stylised track is delivered with a stunning vocal performance, further testimony to this rising star’s artistic evolution. The artist says of her upcoming release – “Nothing needs to be complicated when you can keep it simple. Love can be complicated but only if we make it that way. When you take it back to basics and ignore the outside noise that’s when it works best.

Erica was also an integral part of Irish Women In Harmony, a collaborative release of The Cranberries’ ‘Dreams’ orchestrated by GRAMMY nominated artist RuthAnne Cunningham. It saw 40 of Ireland’s leading female artists join forces to support Safe Ireland in an effort to end domestic abuse and coercive control in Ireland. The song has over 6 million Spotify streams and the stripped-back video, filmed by artists at home during the first Covid-19 lockdown, has been viewed over 3 million times. It seems whatever this rising star touches turns to gold. With a truly dazzling positive outlook and an unrivaled work ethic, Erica’s rise looks sure to continue to great heights in 2021 and beyond.

Roscó Flanagan Shares ‘Take This Hand’

Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, self-taught musician Roscó Flanagan is currently working on his debut album. Drawing influence from the Mississippi Delta blues artists and the countercultural folk sounds of the ‘60s alike, he has developed an intriguing guitar style and lyrical identity.

‘Take This Hand’ – his single released on the 13th of August – is a stripped back acoustic folk blues song about re/connection and re/affirmation. Attempting to capturing a sense of intimacy by modest means, the track was recorded, mixed and mastered on a shoestring with the basic equipment available to him during the lockdown periods in Ireland. He is eager to get back into the studio and put the finishing touches on the eight or nine other tracks recorded throughout this time.

Roscó has been featured on BBC 6 Radio, has played a handful of festivals around his homeland and has been given glowing reviews – including a feature in U & I Independent Music Magazine for an impromptu live music performance. He has been performing on the Dublin circuit for many years, honing his craft. Following the sudden passing of his father, Flanagan has been more eager than ever to pursue his vision and share his music with a wider audience.

Am & Áit: Additional tickets Lisa Hannigan 21st August & Iarla O’Lionaird 22nd August

Selective Memory are pleased to announce that a limited number of tickets have been added for ‘Am & Áit’ taking place next weekend Saturday 21st August and Sunday 22nd August on the steps of the Pepper Canister Church on Mount Street, Dublin 2, kick starting at 7.30PM.

Meanwhile, Iarla O’Lionaird will be joined by The Gloaming’s Caomhín Ó Raghallaigh and Matthew Nolan on Sunday. Aoife Nessa Frances will provide support for Iarla. These live performances will be the first events taking place in a public outdoor space in Dublin since the outbreak of Covid-19.

Framed by the splendour of Dublin’s Georgian houses this will be a near spiritual experience for music lovers as these exquisite musicians breathe life back into this historical quarter of the city and well-loved venue, performing outdoors on the steps of the church.

With specially curated visuals for each performance this landmark location was one of the last of the Georgian churches built by the Church of Ireland in the early 1800s. St Stephen’s Church is fondly referred to by Dubliners as the Pepper Cannister, the nickname derived from the shape of the spire, resembling a pepper cannister! While still used as a place of worship, the venue has played host to some of Ireland’s finest musicians in the past (albeit indoors).

The majestic backdrop of the Pepper Cannister Church, with its impressive pillars flanking the stage, is set to be an unmissable and memorable location for the celebration of song, togetherness, and the eternal beauty of the streets of Dublin – something we have all yearned for during these challenging times.

Tickets are €20 plus booking fee are available from www.selectivememory.ie. These shows are funded by the government Live Performance Support Scheme.

Patricia Lalor Releases Brand New Single via Atlantic Records

Patricia Lalor has released her brand new single ‘Vessel’. The track is the Irish alt-pop teen prodigy’s debut release on Atlantic Records.

‘Vessel’ takes Patricia’s lo-fi pensive musings and builds upon her wise-beyond-her-years songwriting and delicate acoustic tones with an imposing string section to make a bold grand statement with her first release in 2021.

Regarding the single Patricia says, “‘Vessel’ is a song I wrote about how the world perceives you, about how it expects you to grow up and mould to what’s happening around you / to you. I wrote it to kind of get a better understanding of it all but it just kind of made it all more messed up.”

Patricia released a trio of critically acclaimed EPs in 2020 including This Is How We Connect, While You Stand So Tall, Do It Again and Sleep Talk, which saw the 15-year-old Wexford singer tipped as the next Billie Eilish, while also draw comparisons to the likes of Warpaint, beabadoobee and Clairo.

She turned the heads of tastemakers with champions at Radio 1 including Jack Saunders and Annie Mac, as well as achieving huge support from RTÉ in her Irish homeland, while press support came around the world from the likes of DIY Magazine, Refinery29, Indie88, 20 Minuten, Irish Tatler, Hot Press and more.

Patricia was included in a number of high profile end of year tips for 2021 including The Independent’s ‘Ones To Watch’ and Sunday People’s ‘Legends Of The Future’. Spotify are also huge champions of Patricia Lalor and featured every original single from the singer in 2020 in their New Music Friday playlist.

Now returning in 2021 with a bolder sound than ever before, Patricia Lalor is set to continue to solidify herself as one of the most exciting new names to come out of Ireland in recent times.

Rushes Takes Us To His Underworld in New Single ‘Blue Ghost’

Following the critical success of previous singles ‘Wide Eyed’ and ‘Funds’, Alternative pop artist Rushes returns with the release of the third single from his upcoming project ‘Glowchild’. The lavish, rave-inspired ‘Blue Ghost’, hauntingly, on Friday the 13th of August.

The pulsating ‘Blue Ghost’, took inspiration from Rushes’s earliest experiences of raving into the long hours of the morning. “It takes me back to the first rave I went to,” Rushes explains, “that feeling of just floating and the raw, unfiltered atmosphere of the environment. It’s probably the most abrasive song on Glowchild,” he adds, elaborating that “while the intro is quite melodic and lavish with that arpeggiated synth line, it leads into a harder hitting rave, club inspired track.”

While the track may draw inspiration from some hazy nights of house, lyrically ‘Blue Ghost’ is far deeper in tone and theme. “‘Blue ghost’ is about attachment and spiralling out of control”, Rushes notes of the track’s lyrics, “As the song builds, I am trying to find something greater than the attachment and looking to make sense of it, whether it was good or not. It’s kind of like someone giving, offering help but it doesn’t land. You end up asking the question if any of it was worth it.”

‘Blue Ghost’ was written and rewritten over a couple of months in 2019, with Rushes continuing to refine the track until the very last day of recording. “I remember the vocal session kept crashing just from the sheer amount of takes. I’ll do hundreds of takes when I’m recording my vocals, making sure that what I want is portrayed exactly how I want it to be.”

It’s not only the vocals that were parsed through as Rushes admits to spending countless hours focused on the orchestral section of the track, which leads into a rave inspired drum pattern, accompanied by floating synths. “Different sections pop in and out and take you on that journey, the song spirals through the motions. I wanted there to be that switch in the track, it’s almost like going into the underworld,” Rushes adds.

The music video was shot in West Cork by Eddie O’Flaherty in the midnight hours. Rushes explains of the concept,  “It’s kind of a sequel to the ‘Wide Eyed’ video, raw but really showcasing the power and the idea of the song.” The video finds Rushes, in a shirt and suit pants, searching haphazardly through the final embers of the night, waiting for the world to stop spinning and in need of a place to lay his head. Rushes explains, “’While ‘Wide Eyed’ deals with attachment; ‘Blue Ghost’ is more about spiralling out of control with that attachment. I kind of lost myself making this video, and maybe I was subconsciously bringing myself back to that time of what I was experiencing when I wrote the song.” Capturing the track’s desultory format and ever-changing tempo and theme, ‘Blue Ghost’ shows us all that it’s okay not to have your world in order. Chaos can breed its own form of relief, and with it can produce some of the world’s most beautiful art. The music video for ‘Blue Ghost’ is set to be released on August 19th.

‘Blue Ghost’ follows on from the huge success of Rushes’s previous singles with media support from Irish publications such as District Magazine, Hot Press, Nialler9, Goldenplec, The Last Mixtape and Soul Doubt Magazine, alongside international publications such as CLASH Magazine and Enfant Terribles. On Spotify, Rushes’ has been added to editorial playlists such as New Music Friday UK, New Pop UK and Chilled Pop Hits.

Rushes’ last release, ‘Funds’ has received huge radio support, reaching No.2 and staying in the Top 5 on the Irish Breaker’s chart for 5 weeks; the highest-ranked independent artist, behind industry big-hitters such as Gavin James. To date, ‘Funds’ has gained over 4.4 million impacts on Irish Radio, adding to ‘Wide Eyed’’s 1.2 million impacts. “Rushes was born to write sun-kissed, top down summer anthems,” District Magazine wrote and ‘Blue Ghost’ is the perfect example of such skills.

Raised in the rural West Cork town of Skibbereen, Rushes blends the craft of perceptive songwriting with thoughtful melodies to create ambient stylings of epic proportions. Oozing iridescent poise and elegance with eager, soulful, vocals and cutting-edge hazy electronic sounds, Rushes pushes the art of pop songwriting to its very limits, all in the name of finding new and exciting sounds to play with.

Fittingly released on Friday 13th, ‘Blue Ghost’, the third single to be released ahead of Rushes’s much-anticipated upcoming project ‘Glowchild’ on September 10th. Encapsulating the formative journey of struggle, fierce ambition, love, loss, and the clarity brought on by an eventual sense of self-awareness; ‘Glowchild’ is a beautifully sensitive story woven through its collection of nine tracks.

‘Blue Ghost’ audio available on August 13th
‘Glowchild’ available September 10th

‘Happy Again’ the New Single by Niamh Regan

With the release of her debut album ‘Hemet’ on Black Gate Records in September 2020, Galway singer-songwriter Niamh Regan delivered an emotionally rich and sonically textured delight that has effectively put her at the table beside some of the biggest names in Irish folk music.

Despite the challenges in releasing new music during a pandemic, breakthrough artist Niamh scooped up nominations for ‘Best Album’ at both the prestigious RTÉ Choice Awards and the RTÉ Folk Awards, played a series of live stream shows around the country, performed for national television (Other Voices, The Late Late Show), received substantial radio play on (RTÉ Radio 1, BBC NI, BBC 2, RTÉ 2FM), and collaborated and performed with singer songwriter David Kitt and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for a Bank Holiday Special with RTÉ Radio One.

Niamh’s follow up single ‘Happy Again’, produced by Alex Borwick, is as substantially poignant as anything we’ve heard from her so far, overflowing with affirmation and endeavour.

Discerning listeners will be sure to notice how she effortlessly captures the essence of the golden age of Laurel Canyon. The influence of late 1960’s folk songwriters such as Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Nicks are on show, however Niamh Regan has an artistic palette that extends way beyond those borders.

Mellifluous as the delivery is, there is a rawness and a depth of focus on ‘Happy Again’.

Speaking of the single, Niamh says “This was the first song I wrote after releasing ‘Hemet’, and it was in the middle of lockdown. It’s roughly about the work you do to turn things around or feel better again. And I suppose this kind of work can go unrecognized and feel quite isolating. So, this song was an opportunity for me to acknowledge this process in all its glory.

The whole production of this song felt very natural and easy with the band and my producer Alex Borwick that it almost felt cathartic in the studio as it came together. It’s a simple song but I’m really proud of it and feel very happy to have the chance to share it with you now.”

‘Happy Again’ is the first song Niamh shares from her forthcoming EP ‘In the Meantime’ coming this October. This release is made possible thanks to the generous support from Galway International Arts Festival’s Elevate Bursary.
