The Academic Host World-First Live Animation Performance via Google Slides
Fast-rising Irish band The Academic are proud to unveil the results of a world-first live animation video for their new single, ‘Not Your Summer’. The video originally aired in real-time to 300 lucky Academic fans on Thursday 15th July using the method of Google Slides.

To execute the performances, The Academic tapped up BBDO New York and Open the Portal animation studio. Through collaboration with a team of animators, they created new slides every second.
The Academic: “One of the things we’ve missed most throughout this pandemic has been interacting with our fans and creating unforgettable moments for them through music. We were thrilled to collaborate with BBDO and Open The Portal to create this totally new, virtual musical experience in Google Slides. Not only was it a clever way to say ‘hi’ to our fans, but we live for finding these new techy ways to make our music stand out from the rest.”
The animation is loosely based on the song’s lyrics, which speaks of the isolation experienced throughout 2020, and the internal conflicts none of us could have predicted. Fans who aren’t able join the livestream (100 per event) will be redirected to YouTube to view the video and band interaction live.
The Academic have a history of innovative tech firsts, working on an award winning ‘Live Looper’ event via Facebook Live for an early single, ‘Bear Claws’, also alongside BDDO New York.
The Academic’s ‘Community Spirit’ EP is out now.
The EP sees the Mullinger 4-piece honing their knack for epitomising the excitement and apprehension that one meets at the intersect between youth and adulthood, without a hint of cynicism or pretence. These are sky-scraping, heart-on-the sleeve anthems, accented with guitar hooks which immediately take up residency in the head of anyone who listens.
Having collaborated with Kaiser Chief’s Nick Hodgson on last year’s ‘Acting My Age‘ EP, this new collection of tracks will mark The Academic stepping into the producer’s role, unquestionably developing as musicians with each thumping release that passes.
Following a spot on the Main Stage later this month at the Reading & Leeds Festival, The Academic will embark upon a full tour in spring 2022.
