Four in the Morning Debut EP ‘Stress Dreams’ Out Today

Four in the Morning have just released their Debut EP ‘Stress Dreams’ today, with their brand new single ‘Keep It Together’ out now across all digital platforms.

Speaking about the EP Kevin Dolan of Four in the Morning said: “I didn’t really notice until the record was finished how many references to sleep and dreams there were across it. The songs are obsessed with family, longing, stress, depression, love, and how we make sense of all of it. They’re fragments, feelings, and a means of coping.

The pandemic did wonders for Four in the Morning. As the music industry (and let’s face it, the world) faced one the toughest years ever, Four in the Morning bunkered down to write and record some of the most exciting music they’ve ever made. The new single ‘Keep It Together’ is the first track off of the resulting EP.

Led by Irish singer-songwriter Kevin Dolan and surrounded by an eclectic group of genre defying musicians – Kiran Srinivasan, Dan Walwyn and Alex Lees – Four in the Morning write sad songs for insomniacs. As Kevin Dolan puts it: “I’ve always been bad at sleeping and I find late at night a great time to write. Whether it’s a dream or a song, there’s something beautiful in the subconscious taking all the stuff from a day and making sense of it. I guess that’s what these songs try to do.

The band are a strange mix of musicians and joke that really they shouldn’t be friends. Kevin Dolan is an Irish history podcaster obsessed with lyrics, Kiran Srinivasan an Alfa Mist loving funk nut, Alex Lees grew up playing jazz, and Dan Walwyn — well he might actually be the glue that holds it all together — is a bass player who loves Tool and Paul Simon equally.

Throughout lockdown they began writing a series of songs that would become their new EP, ‘Stress Dreams’. They worked with Ainslie Wills over Zoom, bounced files back and forth between each other, and had recording dates repeatedly knocked back. Another band may have given up, but they just used the delays and unwanted time to push the songs further and further.

As the band tells it, ‘Keep It Together’ started as not much more than a simple piano riff and some words. They then pushed it and twisted it and changed it until it broke repeatedly. It’s been everything from a boring indie banger, to a slow piano ballad, to an electronic glitch fest. But, once the band landed on the song’s signature drum loop, the whole thing clicked.

Filled with references to Nixon, press conferences, and broken fire alarms, the song gives the sense of a slightly surreal and unhinged world. Which is probably apt for 2021. Kevin Dolan explains that it’s about trying to fix a record player — sort of.  “Early last year — as wages were cut, gigs finished, flights cancelled and people died on the radio — my problem was a broken record player. I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to make it sing me something. Eventually I realised that fixing a record player wasn’t going to fix the world, and this song kind of stemmed from that. It’s about putting on a good face for ones you love and how that never really works.

After multiple delays and with only a week before a government grant ran out, ‘Stress Dreams’ was produced, recorded and mixed by Jono Steer (Angie McMahon, Ainslie Wills, Leif Vollebekk, Julia Wallace) at The Perch Recording Studio in Castlemaine in rural Australia. The band describe the time saying: “When we were able to come together to record in Castlemaine with Jono, it was like a year’s worth of creative energy was allowed to run wild. In four days we transformed the songs all over again and it was nothing short of exhilarating.”

For fans of The National, Mick Flannery, Phoebe Bridgers, Elbow and Lisa Hannigan, ‘Keep It Together’ the brand new single from Four in the Morning is out now across all streaming platforms, with debut EP ‘Stress Dreams’ released today.

Jack Dora Releases ‘Mine Forever’

Critically acclaimed Indie-pop artist Jack Dora is back with his bold new single ‘Mine Forever’. Having received support across national radio and write-ups from HotPress, Earmilk and Notbad the Sligo native has been called “one of the most compelling new forces in Irish music.” (Hot Press Magazine)

‘Mine Forever’ is fueled by sparkling 80’s dance-pop and new wave sounds. The song looks back at the bright resonances of the 1980’s, with hypnotic industrial drums, glistening synths, slapping basslines and slick guitar riffs. Taking influence from Prince and Madonna in its soundscape and vocal delivery, ‘Mine Forever’ is a song about obsession and control within toxic relationships. In Dora’s own words “It’s supposed to lure you into this positive and vibrant soundscape and then turn you inside out. You almost think you’re listening to a typical love song about pure naive devotion but you’re listening to a very toxic person describe their twisted unhealthy infatuation with their partner.”

With this single, Dora moves from his more post-punk sound to one focused on the sleek production of 80’s pop music, while still retaining some of the attitude and eccentric delivery of his earlier singles. “This song is the introduction to the unreliable narrators of the upcoming EP. It’s taking the pretty sounds of 80’s synth-pop and flipping it on its head by bringing modern issues of toxic masculinity and ego into the equation… and still making you dance to it”.

This is the first single from Dora’s upcoming debut EP slated for release sometime early in 2022. Jack wrote, recorded and produced the track in his bedroom in Dublin. It was mixed by the Irish London-based musician Yenkee and mastered by Fergal Davis (Muse, Republic of Loose, Sinead O’ Connor). Dora plans on performing very soon with the music scene reopening, after previous performances in Whelans with Dublin artist St. Bishop, Blushing Boy and Tanjier.

Debut EP from Graham O’Hara for Men’s Aid Ireland

Dublin singer-songwriter Graham O’Hara releases new EP ‘When Mountains Get Paved’ on 27.08.2021 as a fundraiser for Men’s Aid Ireland.

Graham O’Hara is a Dublin singer-songwriter and has been on the Irish music scene since 2009, performed with acts such as Satellite Generals, Amberfly and Jamie Duff. Describing himself as “a guitarist by trade but a songwriter at heart“, his foray into a solo career has seen two single releases so far.

His upcoming EP ‘When Mountains Get Paved’ is a fundraiser for the charity Men’s Aid Ireland. As Graham explains:

While I have no first hand experience with domestic violence, the topic came to my attention early in lockdown when it was pointed out that those experiencing domestic violence are now trapped with their abusers. Men’s Aid Ireland is the only charity of its kind in Ireland and donating to them will support male victims with legal costs, counselling support, support clinics amongst other costs.”

‘Keep It in’ is the first single and was released 19.08.2021.

This track is about learning how to open up to loved ones and to take every opportunity to share your feelings with them as “none of us know when we’re gonna go”. There will be a music video for ‘Keep It In’, release date to be confirmed.

‘Loneliness’ is the second single and was released 25.08.2021.

‘Loneliness’ is a call to action to disconnect from the meaningless and connect with each other. The Covid-19 lockdowns have brought about both physical and psychological barriers between us all and despite the fact that we are all experiencing the same pandemic, its impact is felt differently by everyone. This inspired Graham to pen ‘Loneliness’. The lyric video for ‘Loneliness’ was released 26.09.2021.

Three Underneath Announce Debut Album

The debut album — a career defining moment for any band, but for Three Underneath this album couldn’t come too soon. “People need to hear this.

The eleven track album includes the singles ‘You’ve Been Had’, ‘All You Can Do’, ‘Tell Me It’s Okay’ and ‘Memories’. [full track listing below]

Three Underneath have shown a relentless drive throughout 2021, pivoting from live events to self-produced high-scale music videos.

The music videos are absolutely an extension of the music,” explains Daragh Murray, lead singer and director of the music videos. “It’s been a strange transition but our band and crew have gone full Hollywood!

‘Sun May Glow’ is simultaneously optimistic and doomy, with the refrain “the sun may glow one more time for you” starkly reminding the listener of things to come, against an atmospheric rock backdrop. “It’s the darker side of that one Inhaler song,” jokes Daragh.

The track will appear on the self-titled album, set for independent self release on October 15th, with a total of 11 tracks on the album.

The album was mastered by and mixed in part by Aidan Cunningham (The Scratch, Overhead The Albatross) and produced by the band themselves.

This album is our calling card. It’s our real debut. It had to be self-titled, because it shows all facets of where we’re at right now.  The last 18 months have been challenging to say the least and I think this album pretty much chronicles our journey throughout The fear and confinement to the love, hope pragmatism — there’s plenty of heavy, straight-up rock and some quite candid introverted stuff in there!” explains Daragh.

‘Three Underneath’, the album, comes as a follow-up to the band’s double EP, ‘Something Pretty / Something Pure’, which Dan Hegarty 2FMchose as one of his top of the year in 2015

The band were fortunate enough to be chosen for funding in 2020 to release the album during the pandemic and are grateful to the Irish Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for supporting the release.

‘Three Underneath’ is available for pre-order now and will be issued in limited edition physical and bundles, available exclusively at ThreeUnderneath.com

‘Three Underneath’, the debut album track listing:

1. ‘You’ve Been Had’

2. ‘Faded’

3. ‘Sun May Glow’

4. ‘All You Can Do’

5. ‘Memories’

6. ‘Stand Before The Fire’

7. ‘Floating or Sinking’

8. ‘Tell Me It’s Okay’

9. ‘Kept Me Dry’

10. ‘Better Off’

11. ‘Siren Song’

‘Scáthán Mo Shaol’ New Release from West Cork Singer Bríd O’Riordan

Bríd O Riordan from Kilnamartyra west Cork, releases a 3-track EP ‘Scathán mo Shaol’ this week, ahead of the release of her album of traditional songs later in the year. The EP includes a stunning new treatment ‘Skibbereen’, along with the Andy Irvine classic ‘The West Coast Of Clare’, along with the traditional ‘Bríd Óg Ní Mháille’ with Paul Brady on featured vocals.

Bríd has been singing all her life, with an astute ability to make every song her own, but it was only in 2017 that she was encouraged by various renowned musicians to record an album.  In 2017 she began curating a list of songs for recording and Producer Philip Begley played demo versions of the songs to a number of well-respected musicians, all of whom went on to contribute performances to the recording.  Guests include Paul Brady, Kevin Burke (The Bothy Band, Patrick Street), Ciarán Brennan (Clannad), Robbie Harris (Afro Celts), Dublin piper Mick O’Brien, singer Suzanne Savage and fiddler Kevin Glackin, amongst others. Her album is due for release in October of this no year but in the meantime her 3-track EP is gaining traction and airplay.

Bríd’s 3-track EP ‘Scathán mo Shaol’ includes ‘Skibbereen’, ‘Bríd Óg Ní Mháille’ and a new arrangement of the Andy Irvine’s classic, ‘The West Coast Of Clare’, about which Andy himself has said “Very nice! Well done to all. I hope it’ll be a big success for Brid.

‘Scáthán Mo Shaol’ is available on all the usual digital platforms.

FYA FOX Releases Her New Single ‘Need It’

Ireland’s hotly tipped alt-pop empress, FYA FOX flaunts her newfound independence in ‘Need It’, a hard-hitting dismissal that leaves no remorse. The single is due for release Friday, 27th August 2021.

Traversing rolling hills of sparse, panoramic songwriting, FYA FOX is the exciting new prospect from Ireland spinning tightly wound yarns of brooding and emotive alt-pop. A classically trained vocalist straying beyond Ireland’s traditional country/folk scene, FYA’s influences span from Banks, Lana Del Rey and London Grammar.

Returning from a slight breather after the recent and pulsating release ‘Sunset’, FOX’s new track, ‘Need It’ harnesses the singer out of a venomous relationship and into a life of liberty.

The irresistible beats of ‘Need It’ wrap themselves around FYA’s sultry harmonies as she challenges her lover to admit their wrongdoings, before ultimately realising she’s better flying solo. “Your voice, I don’t wanna hear it / Your touch, I don’t wanna feel it” she commands in the track’s palpitating chorus as her self-confidence and independence rises now she’s unchained herself from all links of toxicity.

Toning down her delivery in the track’s middle 8, FYA reflects, singing: “Looking at it now, I think I’m better off without / I wish I had known you’d let me down” before launching into one final chorus alive with elated emotion.

FYA’s previous two singles ‘Body’ & ‘White Lies’ have already been supported by 2FM, Today FM and the likes of Hot Press, Record of the Day, Nialler9, The Last Mixed Tape, Flavour Magazine, Fortitude & Alfitude + many more. ‘Body’ was added to the BBC Radio Ulster ‘Where Music Matters’ playlist which features ten new tracks across the BBC Radio Ulster playlist each month and her debut, ‘White Lies’ received its world exclusive with Radio 1’s Gemma Bradley on BBC Across The Line. As well as being added by Hattie Pearson to the influential Co-op Edit UK playlist, her music has featured on a number of prestigious Spotify playlists including ‘Fresh Finds’ (750K followers).

FYA FOX’s new single, ‘Need It’ is available August 27

JYellowL Announces New Single ‘See Me Finish’

JYellowL releases a brand-new single ‘See Me Finish’, due for release this Friday, 27th August. This follows his critically acclaimed debut album 2020 D|vision, which was nominated for Irish album of the year 2020 at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Awards and debuted at number 2 on the official iTunes album charts as well as number 1 in the hip hop category.

The album served as a timely soundtrack and breath of fresh air for an overwhelming year, manifesting JyellowL’s intention to put Irish rap on the map as a force to be reckoned with on a global front.

Speaking about the upcoming single ‘See Me Finish’, JYellowL said: “I was in Nigeria for what was meant to be a short trip but due to Covid restrictions I ended staying for two months. So I decided to tap into the music scene there and I got a crazy wave of inspiration from the incredible producers and artists I met. Tee-Y being one of them, we locked in and created some beautiful music.

In Nigeria, we have an expression called “see finish” which means over familiarity by making yourself too accessible to someone, being too kind, etc essentially being taken for granted and that’s a red flag. So saying “she don see me finish” means the girl in question had over familiarised herself with me to the point of taking me for granted, my kindness being taken for weakness, my presence losing novelty. I can’t have that, so I had to cut her off.”

JYellowL is emerging into this changing world of 2021 with a string of new releases and collaborations coming to fruition, having performed a dynamic and standout set as part of Extraterrestrial at the National Concert Hall, an event celebrating Black Irish identity.

The next phase in his blisteringly fast rise is envisioned as Yellowszn’. Listeners can expect a series of EP’s that JYellowL is calling ‘shades of yellow’ and which will reveal and explore new sides to him musically that haven’t been shown before. With a fresh and upbeat sound for the summer, the first EP features three tracks including collaborations with Liverpool-based singer Tabitha Jade on the lead single ‘Papi’ and also with London-based MC Jelani Blackman on the strong track ‘Stepped In’.

A recent trip back home to Nigeria which was longer than expected due to the pandemic lockdown gave JYellowL an unexpected and inspiring opportunity to tap into the deep-rooted and ever-innovative music scene there. Immersed in the surroundings and sounds, this time allowed him to connect and collaborate with cutting edge producers and artists there, whose influence can be felt throughout yellowszn.

The first EP of ‘shades of yellow’ features production from Nigerian hit-maker Tee-Y who orchestrated the soundtrack behind the lead single ‘See Me Finish’ and has worked with the likes of Davido, M.I., Tiwa Savage, and more. The slick production of Nigeria-based producer StevJazz, who is signed to Aristokrat records, also helped shape JYellowL’s latest work. The horizon is limitless for an artist like JYellowL who continues to unleash music that connects a multiplicity of origins and cutting-edge collaborations while shaping his own distinct and undeniable voice.

LIVE DATES:

Saturday, 9th October 2021 – Limelight 2, Belfast

Thursday, 14th October 2021 – Roisin Dubh, Galway

Saturday, 16th October 2021 – Opium, Dublin
