Kingfishr release new five track EP – includes new Single and focus track ‘Shadow’

Rising Irish indie-folk band Kingfishr have released their new EP ‘Shadow’ on Friday, March 8th, containing two unreleased tracks Shadow and Coward, as well as previously released singles ‘Leave’, ‘Shot in the Dark’ and ‘flowers-fire (rework).’ Listen here.

The EP opens with focus track ‘Shadow’, setting the pace by casting a stark contrast between uplifting, jangly melodies, and deeply introspective lyricism as lead vocalist Eddie sings “I was terrified of listening to the light, so the darkness came alive”.

Speaking on the track, the band said “Shadow is about the consequences of burying pieces of yourself. There’s an idea that ‘The Shadow’ is everything you suppress about your psyche. Those unseen elements of yourself rule you and you have no idea. The song is an ode to this.”

The second song on the EP ‘Coward’ is a poignant display of vulnerability and remorse. The track opens with soft acoustic guitars, and erupts raucously into a bittersweet chorus: “Call me a coward, running from the dreams inside my head, living with the things I should’ve said, it’s too late…”.

Third track ‘Leave’ was released as a single in January 2024. The track boasts a typically cinematic quality, the gentle picking of acoustic guitar and sharp plucking of the banjo setting the scene. The band’s evocative and poetic lyricism is evident from the start “forever runs away sometimes…” in his distinctive, low burr. The song continues to build, leading to a soaring, epic finale hitting you right in the gut.

Fourth track ‘Shot In The Dark’ quickly became a fan favourite due to the intimate moment and connection between the band and their fans the song and its performance creates. There is a harmonious blend of softly played, jangly acoustic guitar, soothing harmonica tones and emotionally resonant lyrics. It gently builds alongside a rhythmic drumbeat and the steady picking of McGoo’s banjo, as Eddie sings, “If it all falls apart, at least we enjoyed it…” The song is infused with a youthful sense of hope, a theme now synonymous with the band.

The EP closes with a rework of  debut single “flowers-fire” released in summer of 2022. The lyrics are strikingly poetic: “If I could only turn back time/ Take back all those things I said/ In the tempest of a moment/ But oh, my soul has gone and left me/ In the depths he begs for death.” As the banjo strikes up alongside a rousing, thunderous drumbeat, you sense the gravitas that comes with the band’s Irish heritage.

The trio started the year with a festival performance at Eurosonic, then went on to play six sold out headline shows across the UK, with two sold out dates in Ireland still to come in March. Kingfishr have announced that they will be supporting Tom Walker on his upcoming tour, they will join for 14 dates across the UK & Ireland. The band have also been announced as the support act for Snow Patrol’s show at Thomond Park Stadium, in July. That same weekend will see them make their debut appearance at TRNSMT Festival in Scotland, before making their debut at the prestigious Reading & Leeds festivals.

Indie Outfit Loko Parentis to Drop New Album and Six New Videos

After a 14-year hiatus, Dublin-based indie/alternative outfit, Loko Parentis will be dropping six new videos – completed during the Covid-19 lockdown period – as well as a new compilation album over the coming months. The album is set for release in late March 2024.

The second video and track, Remember to Breathe, is available now.

Watch the video here: Video | Loko Parentis (bandcamp.com)

The album cover, designed by Peter Queally, also features professional footballer and occasional Hot Press magazine blogger, Emma Starr, in what is believed to be the first album cover featuring a professional female footballer. Starr, from Philadelphia, USA, was a Women’s National League and Cup double-winner with Dublin’s Shelbourne FC in season 2022. She now plays in Australia and scored the winning goal in the Grand Final there in October 2023 and was selected in the Team of the Year in November 2023.

Entitled ‘Dream Longer Than You Sleep’, the album is a scintillating blast of guitars-with-attitude, and laden with hooks and choruses. The various band members cite influences like Television, Magazine, Sonic Youth, Mott The Hoople, Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

Loko Parentis began as a studio project in Cork in 1981 and featured members of Nun Attax and Cork’s first punk band, Berserk. Loko Parentis was founded by Paul O’Mahony, ex-Berserk, who has remained its driving force ever since the original ‘80s demo, which garnered considerable national and local airplay at the time. An amended line-up played the Oxygen Festival in 2007 (Pet Sounds stage, opening for acts like Sinead O’Connor and Brian Wilson). The Loko Parentis line-up on the new compilation album and videos features Paul O’Mahony with ex-members of The Gurriers, Las Vegas Basement, The Cherries, Estel and The Evil Kneivals.

Fia Moon – New Single ‘blue skies’ Out Today

London-based Irish pop singer-songwriter, Fia Moon returns with new single ‘blue skies’ set for release on March 8th. The song will be accompanied by a DIY visualiser shot entirely on handheld cameras and smartphones in the cityscape of London. The video embraces a lo-fi aesthetic, adding to its authenticity and the raw emotion of the song.

The song demonstrates Fia’s keen sense for sophisticated arrangements, unusual melodies and different timbres.Working alongside London producer Sam Tsang (Fred Again, Griff, Kamal, Lucy Blue) Fia co-wrote ‘blue skies’ in his London studio. The song came together naturally and easily in one day, speaking on the production Fia explains,

“I wanted it to feel light and dark at the same time and Sam perfectly captured that confusing feeling, with his haunting and atmospheric style of production. We laughed and I probably cried at some point lol but it all just felt like we were trying to capture a feeling, more so than trying to create a perfect song.”

The track explores the delicate stages of healing after the end of a relationship, with themes of self-love, rediscovery, and gratitude. The song’s structure mirrors the progression from dawn to dusk, symbolizing the journey from the pale blue crisp skies of morning to the candlelight evenings of introspection and attempted renewal.

Fia’s silky vocals combine to create a hypnotic, meditative soulful pop song with an alluring and intimate undertone. Speaking on the meaning of the song, Fia explains,

“blue skies isn’t necessarily about a particular person or place, but about an underlying feeling that I had at the time.

Like all my songs, this feels like a little diary entry. It’s about a morning I woke up from a dream and forgot that person was gone from my life. There’s something so fascinating about dreams where they disarm you and you lose sense of reality. When I first woke up, I was so disorientated. Like how every day comes to an end, how every tide comes in and out, life goes on. And you must learn to carry on and find the light in every situation. It was a reminder that maybe I wasn’t fully moved on from these feelings, and accepting that.”

‘blue skies’ is Fia’s first release of 2024 following the success of her previous single ‘On Fire’ which dominated the Irish Radio charts reaching #2 in the Breakers Chart and #37 in the Irish Airplay Chart and amassing 12 million impressions and counting since its release! She also ended 2023 on a high by closing the Late Late Show NYE TV special and performing at Dublin Castle. More recently, she has been nominated in the best newcomer category for Goss.ie and was included in 2024 ‘Ones To Watch’ lists for The Sunday Times and Stellar Magazine.

Fia has also kicked off her tour with Lyra as her main support for UK & Ireland including the 3Olympia in Dublin and the Omera in London!

ABOUT FIA MOON

Fia Moon has amassed over 65 million impressions on Irish radio in the short time she has been releasing music independently. On digital streaming platforms, Fia has reached over 3 million streams and has graced the covers of Spotify editorial playlists ‘New Pop UK’ and ‘A Breath of Fresh Éire’ twice! One of Fia’s songs ‘By Now’ has recently gone viral on TikTok with over 23k creations and counting – driven by content creators in South America and Asia!

Fia has performed extensively on television in Ireland, including The Late Late ShowThe Six O’Clock Show, Fanning at Whelan’s and on RTÉ’s Songs from an Empty Room. Fia also has many live performances under her belt having played the main stage at Sea Sessions festival, Indiependence festival and Ireland’s largest festival Electric Picnic! She also supported the amazing Irish talent from Cian Ducrot, The Coronas and more recently Aby Coulibaly at her first London show.

Fia secured her first front cover in 2023 with the Business Post who said “It is her rawness and deeply personal songwriting, generally drawing from real-life experiences, that attracts listeners, but it’s her classically trained soulful vocals that keep them hooked.” Clash Magazine said that “Irish songwriter Fia Moon is telling a unique story.”; tastemaker Nialler9 wrote that “Fia is carving a niche for herself as a promising new artist, and is certainly bringing something new and diverse to the Irish music scene.”; Record of the Day said, “Irish artist Fia Moon offers a glimpse of positivity in this gorgeous slice of atmospheric pop”, Ireland’s Top Music Magazine Hot Press described Fia’s music as ‘beautiful, atmospheric, hyper-relatable pop songs flecked with R&B, jazz and soul”

‘The Book’ – New Single and Album Announcement from Nixer

Nixer are releasing The Book on March 13 to coincide with the announcement of their second EP I hit the town and the town hit me back which sees a digital and vinyl release on May 17. Coming off the back of supporting The Clockworks and The Mary Wallopers, 2024 is shaping up to be Nixer’s biggest year yet.

The Book marks the second single from Nixer’s forthcoming EP I hit the town and the town hit me back and further burnishes their reputation as one of the most exciting acts emerging from London’s fertile alternative scene. Following on from the successes of Second Hand, Pleasure & Irish Dancer, The Book continues the act’s run of diverse singles, from both a sonic and thematic perspective.

The track is about living in a euphoric, dreamlike state. It is inspired by reading and how this simple act can have such a transformative effect on one’s imagination. The track was composed whilst reading Sputnik Sweetheart by Murakami which inspired the song’s themes of unrequited love and longing.

Sonically the release is a distillation of the trademark Nixer sound: uptempo and visceral all whilst delicately balanced with the perfect amount of pop sensibilities. Taken from a Nixer record by Seán Keenan and Simon Gardner. Recorded, produced and mixed in a bedroom in London, LA, and New York City. Mastered by Rude 66 in California.

New Jackson shares first two tracks from new album “OOPS!… POP” out April 19th

NEW JACKSON marks his long-awaited follow-up to 2017’s From Night To Night with its successor OOPS!… POP for long-time collaborators Permanent Vacation. The new LP is due out on vinyl/cd/digital on 19th April 2024. A concise triumph in techno pop, its 9 tracks elevate his signature electronic sounds into anthemic new heights.

The first two tracks are out today [Friday 8th March], speaking about them, New Jackson aka David Kitt, says:

“Out of Reach was the last track I wrote for the album. I had a version of the album that Iiked but the whole thing didn’t feel quite ‘oops’ or ‘pop’ enough. I had the melody and chorus of Out of Reach knocking around for a while and I wrote and recorded the lyrics and vocals in one long session the day before mastering was booked. It gave the album a shot of pop urgency that made it really gel as a whole. I get a mild bang of Jason Donovan off it but it has giddy techno-pop sugar rush that I really like and it makes it a worthy addition to the New Jackson canon. And hey Jason D via Stock Aiken and Waterman is definitely part of my pop musical DNA.

The OK Hole was written in one two-day session. It features my beloved SP 1200 quite heavily. I’ve never really been in a K-hole but this how I imagine it might feel in a nice cosy one. It originally featured a Flann O’Brien/Brian Ó Nualláin interview in the breakdown but I decided at the 11th hour to go fully instrumental as it just felt a bit jarring and there may have been copyright issues.”

David Kitt is a prolific sonic polymath who’s enjoyed a colourful career making whatever he likes. While releasing music under a vast array of aliases and collaborations for close to two and a half decades, New Jackson has remained his irregular home since 2011 for when ‘at one with the machines’. It offers a kaleidoscopic window into his love of dance music, and on his debut album under the alias From Night To Night (released in 2017 on Dublin’s All City label) he unfurled his singular vision; a dilated suite of nocturnal soul coaxed from his beloved electronic equipment with songwriter’s nous, sonically etched as blunted whispers coalesced from the dusky billows of Dublin Bay. Further EPs and singles followed, alongside a beloved live show he toured globally, plus detours with his critically-lauded Garies duo (with Lumigraph) and a David Kitt solo album.

In the time since his New Jackson debut, he has slowly distilled his studio methodology to help mine the true core of his musical self. Within this experimentation, he has stumbled upon the bounty that is OOPS!… POP, his most direct and euphoric body of work to date. Recorded across the span of five years and three different countries, Kitt has managed to transform his beloved alias into a leaner beast, tightening the screws around arrangements and songwriting to inspire an album sonically effortless in demeanour and spontaneously playful in structure and form. Aided by a stacked cast of collaborators including Rita Lynn, Donnacha Costello, Riche “Jape” Egan, Yenkee, Kean Kavanagh, Margie Jean Lewis, Meg Cronin and Fehdah, it bears the hallmarks of the studio albums of yesteryear in its dynamism and gratification while drawing on his rich bouquet of influences across a century of recorded music.

Opener SI SI SI lulls you in with its smothered vocoder’d croons and patient groove, BURNT DEEP next yields a surprising deep house turn, lit gently with casual hedonism. LIKE rewires the playbook entirely, shuffling along its minimal 80’s boogie groove with a cheeky grin, before lead single OUT OF REACH further mines the golden pastures with its glorious stuttering techno power-pop fit with that anthemic chorus. DAY IN SHOCK digi-dubs around the wonderful vocal turn of Fehdah in purest heads-down manner, then THE OK HOLE and STROBE both descend the psychedelic wormhole of anaesthetised breaks and electro with its entranced dancefloor gaze. I WANNA BE ADORED, the Madchester anthem from The Stone Roses, is then surprisingly reimagined as a lost kraut-pop robo sung classic while WITH THE NIGHT AT OUR FEET is our climactic conclusion, a mechanised symphony of dual proportions, a humane core of angelic harmonies chugging along in electro rhythm before soaring strings take us on our way.

New Jackson’s oeuvre, indeed David Kitt’s musical world, is vast; OOPS!… POP then might just be his opus across it all, a towering achievement of soaring catharsis in melody and song that soundtracks the most direct transmissions from his heart to yours.

OOPS!… POP by New Jackson is out on vinyl/digital/CD 19th April 2024 via Permanent Vacation. Pre-order on Bandcamp: https://newjackson.bandcamp.com/album/oops-pop

Also out in the coming weeks is a reissue of David Kitt’s 2006 release Not Fade Away, featuring 8 tracks from the original record lovingly remastered, a re-recording of Say No More and a brand new song Love Someone Else featuring Niamh Regan.

“All Together Now is a realm where ordinary life doesn’t matter. The worries that have been plaguing your mind for weeks suddenly lift.” – Extra.ie

“From New Zealand chart star Lorde telling us about her Irish dad to some outrageous outfits and comedian Emma Doran finding a neighbour in the front row, there was ne’er a dull moment for the 27,000-strong crowd that made it down to Curraghmore House, County Waterford.” Buzz.ie

“All Together Now was beautiful this year. It was creative and weird. It was poignant. At times, it called for grief. At others, it called for nothing but movement. It was wet and windy and sunny and muddy, and it was entirely what so many of us needed it to be.” Louder Than War

“Iggy Pop remains as vigorous as any stadium showboater and, on the final night of All Together Now, is the consummate rock ‘n’ roll outsider: untamed, cathartic and still refusing to play by the rules.” ★★★★★ Irish Times

“All Together Now has all the ingredients in place for another deliriously good weekend.” Irish Examiner

“All Together Now 2023 was a brilliant weekend of live entertainment. The diverse range of world-class performances and friendly, unifying atmosphere will certainly have thousands looking forward to making the trip down to Waterford again next year.” Hot Press

“By the time we were packing our tents on the Monday morning, talk of the wind and rain on Friday had been replaced with rave reviews for another solid and often surprising line-up from the All Together Now team.” The Thin Air

Exciting new Irish artist Georgia G releases captivatingly catchy pop country track “PARASITE” on Wed 13th of March

RTE2FM
“Georgia G is her name and it’s not to be forgotten in Irish music today. She is here to make statements and great music and has simply become a one to watch”

Fingal Independent
“About to take the music scene by storm”

Hot Press magazine
“Hotly tipped artist”

Today FM
“I played this last night and since then I’ve been getting so many messages about it, this is the talented Georgia G with her new single and I think she’s fantastic”

The Goo
“The latter a neo soul bedroom pop star who wouldn’t feel out of place as the local talent in the opening slot of a PRINCE tour. The late late is missing a trick if their Booker doesn’t book this potential pop gem”

Georgia G is a 22 year old singer/songwriter from Malahide, Dublin. Georgia has been writing songs for as long as she can remember, with inspiration from Roisin Murphy, Stereophonics, Sheryl Crow, CMAT and Sister Sledge.

This track is a follow-up to her most recent single release, “Someone Better,” which was played on numerous radio stations nationwide, including RTE2fm, Today FM, Cork’s 96fm, and FM104 to name a few. Georgia G took part in ‘Whelan’s Ones To Watch’ in January, playing to a packed venue.

Georgia G is Labelled as ‘Ones To Watch’ by many including the iconic venue Whelan’s, playing with an impeccable band including Jake Curran, Niall Horan’s guitarist and MD. Being nominated for ‘Most promising of the year’ by Hot Press magazine music awards last year, Georgia G’s upcoming single ‘PARASITE’ will be released on March 13th. With an infectious chorus that will have you belting it out in the car, the song is a lively pop tune. It features a powerful vocal and melody line, as well as all live instruments. It’s fresh with an element of Sheryl Crow’s ageless energy.  You’ll want to play it again as soon as you finish listening to it.

“PARASITE’, is a song that when I wrote it, I couldn’t stop singing it. It’s got the element of rawness that makes you want to get in your car and blast it out while singing along on the motorway.  It’s about that one person you can’t get out of your head no matter how hard you try. Right person, wrong time. It’s about feeling like you’re two steps behind in life and blaming that on this one situation, even though you need to take control of your own destiny.”

Georgia G put out her song “Someone better” in October, it garnered a lot of positive attention, including a feature in Hot Press Magazine. Additionally, it was played on radio stations all over the country. ‘Johnny Bravo’ was released in May, gaining attraction from radio stations nationwide, including a live interview with select Irish (FM104) from her sold out gig in Whelan’s upstairs. Georgia recently played a set at Electric Picnic, also opening for Sophie Doyle Ryder London in May.

Georgia G released her track ‘Are You Single?’ Back in November, which was chosen as RTE2 FM’s track of the week and described as ‘a modern pop gem with retro influences from the 1970’s in the style of Nile Rogers’. Post release Georgia G sold out her first ever headline gig in The Workman’s Cellar on December 5th. Georgia G was chosen to play Hot Press’ ”Young & Emerging’ series on April 2nd of last year, being described as a ‘hotly tipped’ artist by the music magazine.
