Emerging Singer-Songwriter Clodagh Rose set to release fourth Single ‘Could Be Good’ on March 29th

Could Be Good is the fourth single from singer-songwriter Clodagh Rose. She is a 21-year-old Dubliner hailing from Malahide, who is a rising star making waves in the Irish music scene.

Clodagh records her music in the beautiful Camden Recording Studios with producer Alex O’Keeffe (Lyra, Bobbi Arlo, Sistra, Essiray, Maria Petrisor). Alex masterfully produced and mixed Clodagh’s next single Could Be Good.

Could Be Good tells the experience of searching for the good in someone, even though there are red flags, showing you they are no good. It shows love through the eyes of innocence, encapsulating the female experience in an indie folk song. Clodagh says, “The main thing I want people to take away from this song is that you are good enough, and you are worthy of love.”

Clodagh is gearing up for more live performances in the coming months.

Robert O’Connor announces new single “Mysterious Times”

Robert O’Connor will release his first single of 2024, the aptly titled “Mysterious Times”, on March 29. Originally recorded in 1999 by German producer/DJ Sash! with guest vocals by Tina Cousins, Robert’s re-imagining, produced by Gareth Shortland (Sophie Ellis Bextor, Steps) takes a stark approach, shining a spotlight on the lyrics, which feel more fitting than ever in the world today. On his decision to record “Mysterious Times”, Robert says: “When I recorded my last EP, Sash! was a reference I found myself mentioning frequently, and this song has always been a favourite of mine. When I heard it out of the blue on the radio one day I took it as a sign”.

Robert is currently working on the follow-up to his 2022 EP ‘Severance’, which landed the singer over 150,000 Spotify streams, producing five LGBTQ Music Chart Top 3 hits and receiving
acclaim from publications like Retro Pop who said the record “showcased Robert’s superb songwriting and saw him finally find his sound”.

Due later in 2024, Robert says fans can expect a “pop pic’n’mix”, explaining: “I brought so many references to the table, my producer’s head nearly exploded! One day it was ‘80s German
electropop and the next it was ‘00s Ibiza chillout”. While the Dublin artist has released 18 singles and three EPs to date, the as-yet-untitled record will serve as only his second album, with his 2008 debut ‘Distance’ the lone LP in his catalogue. For now, “Mysterious Times” is a tantalising tease for Robert’s return to the long-play format.

Villagers share new Single and announce in-store tour dates

Villagers share “You Lucky One”, the second single from the forthcoming sixth album That Golden Time – due May 10th. The exquisite new record unfurls award-winning Dublin singer-songwriter-instrumentalist-dramatist Conor O’Brien’s trademark melodic flair, his gift for simultaneously vivid and subtle arrangements and lyrics that couch his hopes, fears and dreams in richly absorbing poetry.

“You Lucky One” follows on from the release of title track “That Golden Time”, and features Irish legend Dónal Lunny [Planxty, The Bothy Band] on bouzouki. The song ties into the album artwork’s secondary image, an Irish twenty pence piece. “The types of physical currency change throughout time, but the essential power relationships and bartering principles persevere throughout the cosmetic changes,” explains O’Brien. The cautionary tale documents two protagonists, one who promises riches to the other but is revealed to be more of a parasite. “Who is using who?” asks O’Brien. “I think it explores the often-simplified notion of privilege.”

Stream “You Lucky One” here.

With O’Brien making his music video-directorial debut, the video is a menacing straight-to-camera-shot which showcases the twisted narrative and people’s hidden faces. O’Brien says: “The video, much like the song, is a complicated, messy affair full of hellish landscapes and internal demons. It exists in a world conquered by irrational beings and emotional, selfish creatures. Corruption of the soul and disingenuous motivation are the order of the day, so I thought it best to serve with a side plate of the macabre and sinister.”

After the band-centred sessions of its predecessor Fever Dreams, That Golden Time’s solo-centric core was not forced on O’Brien by lockdown. “For me, That Golden Time has an internalised voice, so much so that I almost found it impossible to let anyone else in,” he says. “It’s probably the most vulnerable album I’ve made. I played and recorded everything in my apartment, and finally, towards the end, invited people in.” Aside from Dónal Lunny, the album features American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick on violin, David Tapley of Dublin band Tandem Felix on pedal steel guitar, and a group of players that O’Brien had first seen performing in a tribute to one of his great loves, Italian composer Ennio Morricone, who added soprano vocal, viola and cello.

The understated poetry within That Golden Time is effortlessly carried by gorgeous melodies and sublime instrumentation. Inspired by philosophers, poets, playwrights and singer-songwriters that had seeped into O’Brien’s consciousness: namechecks this time go to Friedrich Nietzsche (his Beyond Good and Evil: Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future is quoted in the album’s accompanying booklet), Dory Previn, Marcus Aurelius, Fintan O’Toole, Lorraine Hansberry, Chet Baker, Joan Didion, PJ Harvey and post-classical beauties Rachel’s.

Ahead of the full band tour in the summer, Villagers have announced a string of stripped-back instore shows.

Nerves unleash debut EP Glórach this Friday, March 15th

“Nerves have created an EP portraying conflict and tensions within Irish society. The impact of the traumas of the past continue into the present and this seeps into the very soul of the music of Nerves.” GOD IS THE TV ZINE

“Deafening sledgehammer. Screamo disorder. Nine Inch Nails on acid.” TURN UP THE VOLUME

Nerves have built a reputation as one of the most devastating live acts over the past 2 years, with a consistent string of headline shows and support slots around Ireland as well as the spread of a word-of-mouth buzz around the group. They recently made their UK debut with a loud, sweaty and cathartic show in the Windmill Brixton.

Having spent 2 years refining their sound since their last release, the band are now ready to present their debut EP Glórach. Death, degradation and emigration in Ireland are themes that are bound to the DNA of the EP along with an industrial noise punk sound.

Glórach represents a period of several years of change and evolution within the band. From the brutalist slab of droning guitars and squealing feedback on Empty, the shoe gaze influenced walls of guitar and vocal layers of Thirteen, the gothic creeping and sudden blasts of noise on Porcelain and the climactic, apocalyptic collapse of Enclosed.

The EP shows the band at their most aggressive but also their most fragile. Their quieter moments serve to make the louder ones more meaningful and impactful. While the band continues to work on new music and develop their sound further, Glórach showcases the moments that solidified this sound as where the band were intent on heading.

Recorded and co-produced by Daniel Fox of Gilla Band and mastered by Ivan Jackman, this body of work captures much of the sonic devastation that the band are capable of dishing out live.

The band have pulled off a marriage of gothic punk soundscapes with industrial overtones, lyrics dealing with loss and mental health in the rural West and a visual aesthetic seeped in its inherent Irish sensibilities.

The band have been compared to my bloody valentine, Nine Inch Nails, Big Black and Bauhaus but in truth their sound across the five tracks of this EP is harder to define and certainly unique to them.

Blue Fish Diamond to release single about right wing extremism on Friday 26th April

Indie folk rock band Blue Fish Diamond will release their new single Servants To The Hand on Friday 26th April, which will be available on all major streaming platforms from that date.

About Servants To The Hand
Through its social commentary narrative, Servants To The Hand decries the rise in right-wing extremism over recent years. The repeated tagline “we know what you’re trying to sell us is fear” calls out widespread disinformation from right wing-media channels; disinformation that has stoked fear and hatred on issues ranging from immigration to the validity of democratic elections.

Speaking about Servants To The Hand, Jim Murphy of Blue Fish Diamond said “We live in an era where disinformation is rife and can spread like wildfire on social media. Preying on vulnerability and a sense of disenfranchisement, invisible hands pull the strings to further their right-wing agendas. In Ireland, we saw this string-pulling lead to a night of rioting and looting in Dublin before Christmas and more recently to a spate of arson attacks on properties rumoured to be earmarked as accommodation for asylum seekers.”

Servants To The Hand was produced by Gavin Glass at Orphan Recording Studios. The song was co-written by Jim Murphy and Mark Keogh. The musicians who performed on the recording are:

Jim Murphy (lead vocals and rhythm guitar)
Matilda O’Mahony (backing vocals)
Laura Ryder (keys)
Axel McDonald (lead guitar)
Ronan Quinn (bass)
Shay Sweeney (drums)

Single Launch Gigs
Blue Fish Diamond will perform single launch gigs in Dublin and in Castlebar to mark the release of Servants To The Hand:

  • Thursday 25th April:        Workmans Cellar, Dublin
  • Friday 26th April:              Garbos Venue, Castlebar

Life-changing dream inspires powerful tribute single ‘Mac Dee’ by rising Cavan band

Powerful song pays tribute to frontman’s deceased friend by recalling a dream in which she visits him with a warning that preceded his stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

‘A beautiful and poignant piece of work” – Fiachna Ó Braonáin, RTÉ Radio 1

Marcus Magee & The Hollaw Men, a rising alternative rock band from County Cavan, are making waves with the release of their debut single, ‘Mac Dee’. The track features renowned violinist Colm Mac Con Iomaire and is a powerful and stirring tribute to the frontman’s close friend Mairead McDermott who died from cancer in 2020. It is receiving national airplay on RTÉ Radio 1 and elsewhere and is now attracting an international audience after being selected by Spotify for their Release Radar playlist.

Mairead, fondly known to friends as Mac Dee, visited Marcus in a dream back in 2021, leaving him with a warning to take heed of health concerns that had been bothering him. Little did he know that the then 38-year-old father of three was about to enter into an intensive battle with stage 4 cancer, a diagnosis that was to reshape his life and rekindle what had been a longstanding but partially neglected passion for music.

Marcus Magee & The Hollaw Men was formed near Cootehill County Cavan in 2022 after Marcus received his first clear scan. Feeling compelled to share his songs with the world, he brought together a band for what was supposed to be a once-off gig at a local theatre. Joined by bandmates Darragh Slacke on lead guitar, Ben Folkman on bass, Mark Brady on drums, Ronan Brady on flute, and his Danish wife Julie Magee Karlshøj on vocals, the talented six-piece was born. The gig created a huge stir and was followed by a series of sellout shows throughout 2023. One year on, the adventure has evolved to the recording of their debut album, ‘ Rising from the Hollaw, a unique blend of folk, rock and alternative originals, which launches on April 27th at a sold-out gig in the Sugar Club in Dublin.

‘Mac Dee’, a haunting indie folk anthem, is the first single from the band’s forthcoming album and is being released on what would have been Marcus’ friend Mairead’s 40th birthday. With a new music video on the way, this stand-out release looks set to propel the band into the next stage of a unique musical journey shaped by life-changing experiences and heartfelt storytelling.

Marcus explains that releasing his first single marks a new era for him and making Mac Dee his first choice has given him a way to honour Mairead, her life, and the impact she has had on him.

“I first met Mairead at college, then we were on a J1 student visa for a summer in San Francisco. I was busking at Fisherman’s Wharf, and she was selling boat trips to Alcatraz. We became very good friends, and both groups of friends started mixing and going to festivals together in the following years. She would dance with us into the early hours, even when she was undergoing treatment for cancer. Mairead was an incredible human, and I learned a lot from her, we were all heartbroken when she passed away”.

Marcus adds “Mairead visiting me in that dream will stay with me forever. It was very surreal like I was between worlds. It had a profound effect on me. It got into my consciousness in a way no other dreams have. At the time, I had some symptoms I was a bit worried about, but this shook me up and propelled me to get checked. The song is a tribute to her and to that experience”.

‘Mac Dee’ is a captivating track that captures the spirit of this life-changing event. “…You cross the ocean to find me…In this dream, you alert me, Mac Dee” sings Magee. Capturing the raw vulnerability of the experience, the song starts with a dream-like melody before building in tempo to a beat that conjures up a sense of deep emotional release as the full force of the drums and guitar take hold. All of this is aided by the masterful Colm Mac Con Iomaire on violin. The track has been described as “a beautiful and poignant piece of work” by Fiachna Ó Braonáin from RTÉ Radio 1.

“The music has been like medicine during what has been a very challenging time for me and my family” says Marcus. “It’s been a wild and tough few years, the dream, the medical tests, appointments, fear, anxiety, chemotherapy,  surgery and scans. I’m still receiving immunotherapy treatment once a month and having regular tests. There’s been a lot of learning in it all and I was very fortunate to receive counselling thanks to the Irish Cancer Society. The whole experience has given me a new appreciation for life, for living, for music, and connecting back to myself. I feel so grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey, my friends, my family, my wife Julie, the doctors and nurses. To play alongside my friends and bandmates has brought great joy and healing”.

“I’m also especially grateful to have Colm Mac Con Iomaire play on Mac Dee. I’ve been a fan of his music since The Frames and now as a solo artist. He’s a master of his craft and a very decent and kind human. Colm brings huge depth, feeling, and energy to Mac Dee. I met him after Lisa O’Neill’s album launch in Cavan and we ended up playing a song or two together. I played Mac Dee and explained what it was about. Colm knew Mairead too, and even played at her funeral. He said that if I ever recorded it, he’d be happy to put strings on it. It ended up being such a powerful song – it’s as if the song has its own life, with Mairead weaving her magic from the other world”.

Marcus Magee & The Hollaw Men play the Cavan Arts Festival on May 19th and Whelans’ Dublin main venue on July 18th, tickets are on sale now. “Mac Dee” is available for streaming and downloading on various platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp. Ro Yourell (Delorentos) announces debut album ‘Commencer’ & Dublin live date

Ro Yourell – known to many as the vocalist and guitarist of huge 00s Irish indie rock band Delorentos – announces his debut album Commencer , to be released on Friday, 24th May.

Yourell will mark the album release with a full band headline show at Whelan’s (Main Room), Dublin on Friday, 31st May . Tickets are €22 + booking fee on sale now from singularartists.ie .

The Dubliner, who has been hailed as one to watch in 2024 by both the Irish Times and Irish Independent , shared his new single ‘Incinerate’ on Friday, 1st March .

‘Incinerate’ is a song propelled forward by Yourell’s impressive falsetto and hypnotic guitar. With Delorentos currently on hiatus, and particularly since becoming a father, Yourell has had the creative impetus to explore big themes, as his previous singles have shown. In this vein, ‘Incinerate’ surely must be the proverbial jewel in the crown – a smouldering song you can imagine playing on a nighttime drive, with Yourell’s timely lyrics urging us to shun apathy and embrace agency.

“We, the people of the western world, enthralled with consumption and convenience, are steadily losing our agency and our empathy to apathy. The siloed nature of modern life, where algorithms reheat our preferences, makes it more and more difficult to think let alone act outside of the box. The forecast is stormy weather,” says Yourell.

Ro Yourell’s upcoming album Commencer was co-produced by Yourell and Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, Ailbhe Reddy, Bell X1, Soak), Commencer was recorded at Attica Audio Recording Studio in Co. Donegal.

Pre-save here

Ro Yourell says of his debut solo album:

Commencer reflects on a life learned through the prisms of family, religion and the myriad other systems that we create to enhance our experience, but which can become an end in themselves.

“I am a product of my society, but as a forty-something shapeshifter I am fortunate to have the experience and some awareness to stand back, to reflect on how these elements have shaped and continue to shape me. Commencer is a journey towards acceptance, but more than that, it is a challenge to myself and anyone who cares to listen, to recognise and cherish that which is truly precious.”

Yourell’s debut solo single, ‘Freedom’ and his first track of 2024, ‘Dance With You’ , have garnered widespread airplay across stations like Today FM , RTE 2FM , Radio Nova , KCLR FM , 98FM , FM104 and more. ‘How My Heart Beats’ , released in late 2023, was dubbed one of the best Irish songs of November by Chordblossom and named one of the best 100 Irish songs of 2023 by The Last Mixed Tape .

Yourell is best known for his work as a member of Delorentos , a band that’s enjoyed massive success in Ireland and internationally, and is now on hiatus while its members pursue other projects. The four-piece have played stages across the world and racked up an RTÉ Choice Music Prize win for their acclaimed third album Little Sparks in 2012.

Yourell’s solo sound focuses on meditative, intimate lyrics with a distinct poetic flair and driving melody. Follow Ro Yourell across socials for news of new music and upcoming live dates.

HamsandwicH Release “The Live Album” on March 15th & Acoustic Trio Tour Dates

HamsandwicH have been one of Ireland’s most steady indie bands over the years as many music acts and trends have come and gone. Not only has HamsandwicH survived but has thrived as the band prepare to release their fifth album and their first Live album. One of Ireland’s most enthralling live acts in the last 20 years, Kells, Co. Meath band HamsandwicH are well known for their incendiary live performances which has established them as one of the top touring acts in the country. Featuring their signature calling card of Niamh Farrell’s powerful yet sweet vocal, Podge McNamee’s juxtaposing baritone, and Darcy’s soaring guitar riffs, if ever there was a band to feed off their audience it is HamsandwicH; melodic, hook-laden, and heart-warmingly charming.

Having previously sold-out Dublin’s prestigious 3Olympia Theatre three times, the band celebrated their 20th anniversary by returning to the legendary venue on October 21st, 2023. The band performed a career spanning set-list featuring songs from across their four studio albums “Carry the Meek” (2008), “White Fox” (2010), “Stories From The Surface” (2015), and “Magnify” (2023). The night was recorded by the band’s longtime soundman Darren Clarke and will be released as the band’s first live album on March 15th, 2024. The album will be available on digital platforms.

Niamh – “We are all so excited to finally get to release our very first proper LIVE album! It was such a pleasure to have a gig once again in such an iconic venue and we were delighted that we got such a good recording that we had to what it!  I think we have managed to capture the party atmosphere and put it onto vinyl, we hope people will enjoy listening to it!”

Podge – “Some of my favourite albums of all time are live albums. Johnny Cash at Folsom prison and Radiohead live in Galway in the mid-90s have been on repeat. It’s something we always wanted to do as a band, and we’ve had countless people tell us we are better live than on record. Back at the start it would have been the complete reverse. I think this album encapsulates who we are as a band more than any studio album could ever do and captures us in our purest form, there’s an energy and even a childlike silliness we’ve had on stage from day one and it’s amazing to have that oozing out of speakers. It’s the closest I’ll get to seeing HamsandwicH live and I’m all in!”

HamsandwicH released their fourth album “Magnify” back on September 30th, 2023 and was their most critically acclaimed album to date. On “Magnify”, the band incorporated an array of fresh influences and electronic soundscapes whilst maintaining melodic motifs integral to their idiosyncratic style. Of their latest body of work, Niamh reflects, “We’re a band who have constantly evolved over the years and this is our biggest evolution yet.” Initial steps towards this evolution were made when the trio entered the studio in Autumn 2019. Immediately HamsandwicH embraced the concept of making music for themselves, unconcerned with commercial success. “We’re always happy to push ourselves and take risks because we have to keep it interesting. Since we didn’t put pressure on ourselves to write songs for the radio, we felt that we could really do whatever we wanted. ‘The Next Contender’, for example, has a few different movements within the arrangement. That was a really refreshing way to write music because it gave us a great sense of artistic release,” describes Darcy.

“Magnify” highlighted their ease of moving from propulsive rhythms to introspective and sweet soundscapes is effortless and a testament to their remarkable musicianship and unwavering chemistry as a band. Opening with a bang, ‘Electro Wave’ hears HamsandwicH embrace an infectious 80s synth-pop arrangement, the sonic setting immediately re-contextualises Farrell and McNamee’s synonymous vocal pairing. “Do you still feel like your life’s a Saturday night?” McNamee poses throughout the track. Throughout their career, HamsandwicH have never cowered in the corner. On Magnify, they’re the life and soul of the party. Their enthusiasm is infectious. Playing with the timbre and tempo of the arrangements ultimately informed the enveloping world of the songs, as Podge reveals. “We got really inspired by the sound of the music. Tonally, ‘Fired Up’ is really intense and angry; it drew out a lot of the feelings that steered the lyrics and it came together quickly.” Impassioned performances and exhilarating instrumentation lay a solid foundation for HamsandwicH’s future, yet nostalgia and a celebration of important personal connections are crucial to Magnify’s essence. Nestled in ‘Good Friday’s’ luminous synth-laden arrangement is a recording of Derek Nally, their former manager who passed away in 2010. “‘Good Friday’ is a little bow that ties everything together on the record,” says Niamh. “A lot of the themes across the album recognise different connections between people who have been friends for a very long time and the dynamic that creates within a friendship who are all musicians. Including the snippet of Derek Nally in the middle of the song felt like we were making a kind of love note to that period in our life and paying tribute to how important he was to us, as well.” Those connections extend to friends and family lending additional backing vocals on single ‘Le Soleil’ and McNamee’s school friend, the artist Derik Smith, creating the remarkably eye-catching album artwork. Magnify is a testament to HamsandwicH’s spirited and assured artistic voice, of their penchant to be daring with their music.

Back in April 2015 the band’s third album “Stories From The Surface” debuted straight into the number 1 spot on Ireland’s official album chart, the first time an independent and unsigned Irish act accomplished this feat. With producer Karl Odlum (who also produced “White Fox” and the band’s 2008 debut, “Carry the Meek”) at the helm again, the album was recorded throughout Dublin in 2014 in Westland Studios, Windmill Lane Studios, Bow Lane Studios as well as his own studio. Along with such a continuous thread stitched throughout the band’s existence is – as Podge has referenced – a quest to be different yet distinctive. “You want to aim for, achieve and retain these,” says Niamh, “so that people can listen to the new material and know it isn’t going to sound like previous albums, yet it’s still going to sound like HamsandwicH. You want, ideally, people to hear the song on the radio without the DJ or presenter introducing the band name, but the listener will know it’s us.”

Looking back on the band’s 2010 second album, Podge McNamee reflects “It’s good that the songs on “White Fox” are still loved; for such a short album it’s had a remarkably lengthy life, and to be honest, reworking “White Fox” through many gigs slowed down the writing for “Stories From The Surface”; in fact, we almost rewrote White Fox, and that was something we weren’t used to. Most bands will tell you that the real way to learn your material is to get out of your comfort zone and strip the songs down to the bare bones.” The “White Fox” album is featured in Irish Times’ writer Tony Clayton-Lea’s acclaimed book ‘101 Irish Records You Must Hear Before You Die’, describing it as a “masterclass in quality indie pop.”

Prior to the release of their debut album “Carry the Meek” in 2008, HamsandwicH were initially known as a singles-band with a successful run of independent and self-financed singles between 2005 to 2008 – “Sad Songs”, “St. Christopher”, “Words”, “Click…Click…Boom!”, “Keepsake”, “Never Talk”, and “Broken Glass”. The “Carry the Meek” album was released in early 2008 compiling these singles plus three addition songs. Following the album’s release, the band were presented with the Hope for 2008 Meteor Award as voted for by the listeners of RTE 2FM.
