Robert O’Connor will release his first single of 2024, the aptly titled “Mysterious Times”, on March 29. Originally recorded in 1999 by German producer/DJ Sash! with guest vocals by Tina Cousins, Robert’s re-imagining, produced by Gareth Shortland (Sophie Ellis Bextor, Steps) takes a stark approach, shining a spotlight on the lyrics, which feel more fitting than ever in the world today. On his decision to record “Mysterious Times”, Robert says: “When I recorded my last EP, Sash! was a reference I found myself mentioning frequently, and this song has always been a favourite of mine. When I heard it out of the blue on the radio one day I took it as a sign”.
Robert is currently working on the follow-up to his 2022 EP ‘Severance’, which landed the singer over 150,000 Spotify streams, producing five LGBTQ Music Chart Top 3 hits and receiving
acclaim from publications like Retro Pop who said the record “showcased Robert’s superb songwriting and saw him finally find his sound”.
Due later in 2024, Robert says fans can expect a “pop pic’n’mix”, explaining: “I brought so many references to the table, my producer’s head nearly exploded! One day it was ‘80s German
electropop and the next it was ‘00s Ibiza chillout”. While the Dublin artist has released 18 singles and three EPs to date, the as-yet-untitled record will serve as only his second album, with his 2008 debut ‘Distance’ the lone LP in his catalogue. For now, “Mysterious Times” is a tantalising tease for Robert’s return to the long-play format.
