Kellie Lewis covers U2’s ‘With or Without You’

Limerick’s own Alt-Pop artist Kellie Lewis has dazzled the music scene with her captivating rendition of U2’s legendary hit, “With or Without You.” The electrifying cover, produced by the talented Le Bober, takes the listener on a sonic journey through a mesmerizing blend of Pop and Electronic Dance, redefining this iconic track for a new generation.

In a world that constantly evolves, “With or Without You” stands as a reminder of the enduring power music has to touch the human soul. Over the years, the iconic U2 track has transcended its original context to become a symbol of human connections, introspection, and the ever-constant struggle between desire and independence. Whether you’re in the throes of a passionate love affair or reflecting on a past relationship, “With or Without You” strikes a chord with its raw, unfiltered portrayal of the human heart’s intricacies.

Kellie Lewis & Le Bober’s Dance Pop version of “With or Without You” adds a fresh, contemporary twist to one of Ireland’s most beloved classics. This rendition captures the essence of the original hit while infusing it with modern energy, providing a new way for people to connect with the timeless themes explored in the song.

New Dad Release New Track ‘Let Go’ – Out Now

Irish alt/rock band NewDad have shared their latest track ‘Let Go’ – listen here. A song that builds into sinister guitars and a huge crescendo, and the heaviest track on their upcoming album, the lyricism paints a picture of despair and dread, built around topics of depression and self-medication. The accompany artwork symbolises the Saint Brigid’s Cross (or “Imbolc” as it’s known in Ireland), believed to bring protection, with the official video set in a spooky, dilapidated house – set amongst a sea of sleeping bodies, NewDad rise – alongside the cast – to deliver a lawless performance.

Julie Dawson (singer/guitarist) says –“Let Go is about not being able to get better, and how you can’t shield yourself from your demons; it’s about people trying but failing to pull you out of those thoughts and feelings. Saint Brigid’s crosses were believed to bring protection from evil, so we felt having them included in the artwork and video was representative of people trying to save and protect you. We wanted to bring a level of Irish mysticism into the visuals as well. Making them for the video was nostalgic because we used to make them every year in school, back in Ireland.”

Announced last month, Madra (meaning “dog” in Irish) is an 11-song, guitar-stacked visceral outing, as singer/guitarist Julie Dawson embarks on a journey of self-exploration, self-sabotage, and reflection. Soaked in dysfunction, Madra searches for solace in pain, tackling themes of bullying, self-medication/depression, destruction, co-dependency and resistance. The album artwork, photographed by Irish creative, Joshua Gordon, shows a broken doll that serves as a metaphor for the album’s themes of fragility and vulnerability. Upon its unveiling, NewDad dropped their grunge-fuelled album opener ‘Angel’ (listen here), which garnered support from the likes of Fader, NME, Evening Standard, Radio 1’s Jack Saunders “the most exciting new band in the world”, 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and more.

Madra finds NewDad reconnect with their musical roots, digging deep into the shoegaze/rock sonics that soundtracked their formative years (the band cite Pixies, The Cure and Slowdive as some of their biggest early influences), together with glimmers of indie/pop that harks back to their earlier material: ‘Waves EP’ (2021) and ‘Banshee EP’ (2022). Written in their home city of Galway, Ireland, before the band moved to London this year, and recorded at the legendry Rockfield Studios (Black Sabbath, Queen), the album has been produced by NewDad’s long-time collaborator Chris W Ryan (Just Mustard) and mixed by Alan Moulder (The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Wet Leg). Bound together by Julie’s ghostly vocal – a vessel for her weighty, introspective songwriting – Madra firmly marks NewDad as one of Ireland’s most promising debut guitar bands.

The band will tour the UK and Ireland in Feb/March 2024.

About NewDad

Galway-formed band NewDad (a moniker they picked from a random name generator) formed in Galway, Ireland in 2020 after coming together for a musical practical at school, as part of a final year project. It’s a songwriting journey that began at the age of nine, when singer/guitarist Julie Dawson took up guitar after falling for Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriele via her parent’s record collection before developing her skill set at various summer camps.

NewDad have released two hyped EP’s previously – Waves (2021) and Banshee (2022) – both of which were produced by Chris W Ryan, with the latter mixed by John Congleton (St Vincent, Phoebe Bridgers). Since signing to Atlantic Records earlier this year, the band have dropped two tracks, ‘In My Head’ (which  to will feature on their debut) and ‘Break In’.

Part of the Ireland’s fruitful music scene – one that’s generated Fontaine’s D.C, CMAT and Just Mustard over recent years – NewDad are here to remind us of the restlessness, anxieties, and the sometimes-flawed relationships that we’ve all had to navigate throughout our lives. Straddling the autobiographical with the fantastical, the band also draw influence from modern-day cinema/TV and their home city of Galway.

NewDad recently returned to their homeland to playa sold out show at Dublin’s Grand Social. They have previously opened for Paolo Nutini at Alexandra Palace, Fontaines DC at Custom House Square and Inhaler at Fairview Park.

Reviews for There’s A New Sheriff In Town:

[Album artwork by Fergal Styles / Design by Éna Brennan]
[Album artwork by Fergal Styles / Design by Éna Brennan]

“David A. Tapley has been a stalwart of Ireland’s indie music scene for some time…His second album is a winning, often charming collection of songs infused by lyrics mired in disillusionment and music that adroitly references acoustic-style Neil Young, the spaced-out experimentalism of Wilco, and the spirited spite of John Grant.”  – Sunday Business Post

As songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Tapley has always been a jack of all trades when it comes to his work as [Tandem Felix], yet the dynamic approach of [There’s A New Sheriff In Town] showcases these talents on a new level.” Totally Dublin

“For the first listen, I was enticed, for the second I was engrossed, for the third I was enamoured…It’s never going to be hard to support Irish music when artists produce albums like this.”  – The Goo

Today, Friday, October 20th, 2023, Tandem Felix, the Dublin-based experimental rock project of David A. Tapley, self-releases their second album There’s A New Sheriff In Town. It follows Tandem Felix’s critically acclaimed 2019 debut, Rom-Com, described by Hotpress as “[A] beautiful record that’s compelling in the most subtle ways.

Along with the release of There’s A New Sheriff In Town, Tandem Felix shares video for ‘The Kitchen’, the third single to be taken from the LP. Amidst its uptempo rock instrumentation with flourishes of pedal steel, chiming keyboard chords and infectious percussion, we hear Tapley wryly sing,When something’s in the water / And it’s floating around and around / People are talking it up / But I’ve been talking it down.”

Speaking about the lyrical inspiration for ‘The Kitchen’, Tapley explains: I wanted to write a lyric that would describe a hellscape in someone’s own home. Everything is broken and boiling over. The kitchen is filled with smoke and the chef is asleep at the wheel. The music is messy and folds over on itself in a way that feels right for this context. That sympathy between the lyrical and musical elements are a really important part of this record.”

Directed by Liam Farrell, the video for ‘The Kitchen’ playfully follows a political figure and a horrific but humorous dining experience. Talking about the video’s concept, Farrell says: “For the video, we decided to go with a culinary theme to match the title of the song. We aimed to create a fever dream rendition of a drab and stuffy 1970s restaurant. We follow someone going through an awful ordeal where they get served course after course of inedible slop, but are forced to maintain a veneer of decorum. We wanted to make something funny but also deeply repulsive, and hopefully we’ve found that balance. There’s something about disgusting food that’s grimly fascinating.”

‘THE KITCHEN’:

Of his lyrical approach to There’s A New Sheriff In Town, Tapley says: “When I listen back to Rom-Com, it’s funny to hear how much of an idealistic fool I was. The songs on There’s a New Sheriff in Town are a lot more embittered, more jaded. I wanted to make the songs world-weary. That’s how it came together initially, although lyrically nothing was intentional, so to speak. I tend to save that for the music-side of things instead of the words. The words just happen, or at least, I let them happen.”

He continues, “I think I have a kind of brief for myself everytime I do a musical project,” Tapley considers. “With Rom-Com, I wanted to make the most colourful record possible so there’s lots of poppy sounds, weird sound effects and splashes. It even goes down to the artwork, which is a cartoon. There’s a New Sheriff in Town’s artwork that also reflects the mood of the songs; everything’s gotten a little darker.”

A bridge between albums is ‘I Don’t Feel Welcome When You Bring Me To Your House’, a sombre country-inflected arrangement on which a resigned Tapley speculates on a disintegrating friendship to a gorgeous central lament of pedal steel before the track dissolves into an evocative hauntological outro which transitions into the introspective ‘Watching TV for The Hell of It’. The album closes with the shape-shifting 7-and-a-half-minute-long ‘Losing Streak’ which melds an emotive combination of impactful percussion in the opening half before the arrangement turns towards a much more intimate and reflective direction with Tapley accompanied by a striking piano melody as he sings, “How did I not see this coming / How did I not make a change / But when you’re on a losing streak everything just stays the same.” A remarkably moving movement on the album, it wraps itself around the listener and unceremoniously leaves you longing for more, and eager for what’s next.

Tonally, the LP is far more expansive and experimental with enveloping rock-focused compositions embellished with a myriad of new textures such as banjo, saxophone and omnichord along with staples of the Tandem Felix sound. The development of Tandem Felix’s captivating melodic structures were enhanced by a number of contributions from guest musicians across the album. Opening track ‘Finger on the Button’ features a spellbinding pedal steel motif courtesy of B.J. Cole, who has played on Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’ and performed with John Cale, R.E.M., Björk and many, many more. Of this collaboration, Tapley notes: I reached out to one of my heroes, pedal steel aficionado BJ Cole to lend his playing to this song. It’s a weird song harmonically, which was something I struggled with in coming up with ideas. What he sent me left me speechless. A true master at work.”

The variety across There’s A New Sheriff In Town’s palette exemplifies Tapley’s inherent inclination towards intricately incorporating studio-based explorations with rich instrumentation. Written and recorded between 2020 and 2022, this renewed approach which heralded a new direction for Tandem Felix’s sonic sensibilities was introduced with the LP’s first single and title track. This LP welcomes a number of guest contributions such as Ian Romano (Daniel Romano) and Joseph Shabason (Destroyer, The War on Drugs), and the aforementioned B.J. Cole.

Working once again with Stephen Dunne in their Dublin studio Porto Bello, Tapley notes the importance of this “symbiotic working relationship” – which, outside of Tandem Felix, has seen them produce Neil Dexter’s 2022 debut album I’ll Be Ready – by saying, “I need Stephen around to make Tandem Felix music. I need him around for his psychological detail and his ability to picture the songs in his head as finished pieces which is something that I’m not able to do. He’s able to visualise the finished product a lot better than I am and keep steering me towards that image.”

Stella Bass Releases ‘This Could Be The Start of Something Big’

The Dublin jazz singer is excited to announce the release of the lead single today Friday 20th October, from her upcoming album, itself slated for release in February 2024. It’s available on all streaming platforms – Spotify/Apple Music etc; a handy link for which is HERE.

This sparkling interpretation of American musician/talk-show host Steve Allen’s 1956 hit song, “This Could Be The Start of Something Big”, is a collaboration between Stella and the acclaimed Johnny Taylor Trio, with legendary saxophonist Michael Buckley dropping by to contribute a tasty solo. Keeping the groove tight are Barry Donohue (double bass) and Dominic Mullan (drums).

A well-established singer on the Irish jazz scene – described by US publication All About Jazz as ‘a class act’ – Stella has spent much of the last 18 months collaborating with the trio, explaining, “a chance comment from Johnny after a gig that we might perform this song at some stage led me to have a few listens. Not only did I love it, but it perfectly captured the essence of working with this trio. We subsequently recorded the album, sold out our September show in the National Concert Hall, so who knows…maybe this collaboration could indeed be the start of something big!”

Further evoking the fun feel of the song, Stella commissioned Pakistani animator Maria Choudhry to create a stunning video, which features cartoon-versions of the quintet (with uncanny likenesses!) playing in a cosy jazz club.

The full album, “Look for the Silver Lining”, will be released on Sat 3rd February 2024 at a launch gig in Dublin’s Sugar Club (tickets HERE), and features 8 standards and 2 original songs which Stella co-wrote during lockdown. Following the launch Stella and the Johnny Taylor Trio will be touring through 2024.

The album was recorded in Camden Recording Studios in Dublin, engineered and mixed by Conor O’Farrell Brady, mastered by Grammy Award-winning Ruadhri Cushnan and produced by Stella.

“This Could Be The Start of Something Big” is now available on all streaming platforms.

The City Sleeps is the first song to come from this new record. It is an ode to the vibrant nightlife of Dresden’s Neustadt district. “Can’t Dance is a catchy pop song that explores the theme of resilience in the face of adversity. The song is inspired by my own personal experience of going through a difficult time and struggling to find joy and hope in life.

The song has a contrast between the upbeat melody and the dark lyrics, which creates a sense of irony and humor. It uses various metaphors and wordplay, and also includes nods and references to different artists whom I admire such as Niall Horan, The Weeknd, Due Lipa and Madonna. I enjoyed the idea of trying to hide a deeper meaning behind a fun, digestible song!” – Michael Moloney

Fia Moon Stands Strong on New Single ‘On Fire’

Irish pop/singer-songwriter, Fia Moon returns with new single ‘On Fire’ set for release on 20th October . An upbeat earworm layered with tribal rhythmical drums, guitar and Fia’s silky vocals combine to create a fun, light hearted pop song with a sexy undertone.

With an emphasis on the rhythm of the production to reflect the song’s meaning, Fia explains, “This song is about standing in your own power and being confident, loving and accepting YOURSELF and the journey you’re on. But in a fun sort of way.

Ironically, when I first wrote this song, I didn’t feel like this was me at all. I used to go to a lot of different people for advice – I was relatively new to the music industry, I thought I needed to ask anyone I got into a room with what they thought. I felt like everyone was so much more experienced than me and I genuinely valued their opinion. It turned out though, as it always does, that too many cooks really does spoil the broth. I’ve realized the power of keeping things closer to myself, quietly working away and learning to trust myself in the process.

It’s such a fun song to sing and I realize now that there’s a time and place to speak up, to be your own champion, because if YOU’RE not going to, then who the hell else is gonna?

You gotta set your own standard of how you deserve to be treated and once you own that, that feeling is powerful. That confidence that comes with knowing yourself, loving yourself, it’s freeing. Remembering the only opinion that matters is the person looking back at you in the mirror.”

The lyrics in the chorus not only allude to loving yourself with ‘my body’s on fire ’, but also the idea that you have been set alight and anything intruding on your path can ‘get out the way’ as a spark has been lit.

Fia co-wrote ‘On Fire’ with London based producer Deewaan ( Liam Payne, Lady Gaga, Kolidescopes ). The recording process involved a lot of late nights and took a lot of trial and error as it was just Fia and Deewaan in the studio working on the production and the mix to fully capture the essence of the song. Fia explains, “we’re both perfectionists, both ‘Taurus’ and we would laugh at how similar we are in that respect. We could have either clashed or worked well together. Luckily, it was the latter and we pushed each other to get the best sound we could.”

San Rocco ‘Bind My Hands’ Out Now

‘Bind My Hands’ is the second single to be released off San Rocco’s forthcoming debut EP – ‘People Verses’. Following on from the success of their first single, ‘Enola’, ‘Bind My Hands’ showcases a more dynamic side to the Dublin quintet’s sound.

‘Bind My Hands’ is about romantic insecurities and the self-destructive path one can find themself on when those internalised feelings begin to fester.

In contrast to their last single ‘Bind My Hands’ sees a slower more melodic style of songwriting from the band . The recording was built up using pianos, synths and programmed drums, which helped create an air of tension that builds towards a loud smashy catharsis.

‘Bind My Hands’  was recorded at Black Mountain Studio, Co. Louth by Peter Broderick (Just Mustard, The Divine Comedy, Hozier) in Spring 2023. The track was then sent to London to be mixed and produced by Richie Kennedy who brought his experience of working with The Murder Capital, Interpol and Ed O’Brien to the track. Richie added some unique touches that helped round out the sound the band were looking for.

The track was then mastered by John Webber (David Bowie, Echo and the Bunnymen) at Air Studios, London.

‘Bind My Hands’ is released on all platforms now.

Any of the greatest artists like Van Gogh suffered with mental illness, and maybe they were the ones who could see through the masks we wear. Vulnerability comes with this release, and I am totally fine with that.”

Cathal has set his sights on performing a few small sets and is ready to go saying “as Conor McGregor says himself – stay ready.”

The last rapper EP is now available on all streaming platforms, including Apple Music & Spotify.

Steo Wall ‘Street Wisdom For Lost Souls’ The Second Album Out October 20th

“Dublin accent dripping from each syllable, ‘Glory Days’ is as classic as Irish folk music can get- and at the same time, it’s refreshing and modern”– Hot Press

Fresh from recording his contribution to Ireland 100: An Old Song Re Sung, an RTE and South Wind Blows presentation which will be broadcast on RTE 1 Television on October 30th, Steo Wall’s second album, Street Wisdom For Lost Souls goes on release tomorrow, Friday October 20th.

Referred to by Hot Press as “One of the most pioneering voices in the Irish folk music scene”; this has to be one of the most accurate statements relating to any Irish artist to date in 2023 and with his new album, Co. Clare based STEO WALL, displays with the greatest of ease just why this statement is seamlessly true!

STEO, whose proud Traveller heritage is a big theme in his music endearingly talks of his Glory Days single;‘‘…It came to me in a few hours during the pandemic, like a musical hug from the ancestors.”  Steo continued affectionately; “I wanted to get the words, me auld segotia into a song. Then once I did, memories of old friends and characters from my childhood flooded my mind and I just followed the path. I hope the listener gets the same nostalgia filled buzz from listening as I did from the writing.”

Released in September, Glory Days was the fourth track to be taken from the album and is preceded by Borstal Boy, My People and More Blacks More Dogs More IrishMore Blacks More Dogs More Irish featuring vocal powerhouse Toshín was released last winter and is an anti-racism/protest song written as a middle finger to anyone who looks down their nose at anyone else. Steo speaks more on this track later in this document. Written by Steo, Glory Days is produced with Martin O’Malley, who co-produced the new album also, with Steo and is mastered by the inimitable Brian Masterson @ Soundscape.

The last month has been very special for Steo; his most recent single Glory Days was added to the RTE Radio 1 Recommends list in addition to some remarkable wider support also all for which Steo is so grateful.

Steo also travelled to London to perform as part of Glór Nua, at London’s Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith and the invitation to contribute in Ireland 100: An Old Song Re Sung, the RTÉ, in association with South Wind Blows and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media as part of the Decade of Centenaries Programme 2012-2023, live concert to mark the first 100 years of the Irish State has easily been a highlight of 2023“It is a great honour for me to be part of Old Song Re-sung, marking the end of a decade of centenaries.  To sing a song that means so much to me and to my family, is the honour of a lifetime.  For my family to feature in this way, in a celebration of Irish culture among some of the most important artists and poets of the century is very special indeed. The ancestors are smiling.” – Steo Wall

After first breaking onto the Irish music scene in 2018, Steo’s star is on a distinct upward trajectory. Steo can refer to Christy Moore as being one of his biggest supporters’ while also been a most welcome and sincere confidant and a fan.  Steo has also captivated audiences throughout Ireland and the UK; his live sets have been described by Damien Dempsey as pure alchemy.

Steo has an eclectic taste which shines through in the multi-genre array of songs on his roster.  Having shared a stage with Damien Dempsey on national tours in 2016, 2017 and again opening for Damo’s stage in Vicar Street in 2018 it was obvious Damo had become a fan of Steo and his music.  He subsequently featured on Steo’s debut single release called, What’s Wrong With The World Ma?

Steo’s distinct music style and inspiration for writing is only surpassed by his performances; Steo’s mix of spoken word and folk-inspired melodies weave together in an acoustic groove as pure and passion fuelled as you will find, down the road.   His musical influences include fellow luminaries such as The Fureys, Bob Marley, Shane McGowan, Sinead O’Connor, Christy Moore and Tupac; artists not afraid to tell the tales needing to be told.
