‘A Gardener Now’, A New Film From Myles O’Reilly (Arbutus Yarns)

In an unlikely alliance between an Irish traditional Bodhrán player and a Northern Irish Lambeg player, Rónán Ó Snodaigh (Kíla) meets with Unionist and Derry resident Richard Campell where they collaborate, listen, and learn from each other.

‘A Gardener Now’, the new music film by Myles O’Reilly (Arbutus Yarns) is a message of growth and nurture. Peace, reconciliation, and hope, through rhythm. It is available to watch on Myles O’Reilly’s Youtube page:

Speaking about the film, Rónán Ó Snodaigh says:

“It’s very exciting for me as a Gael and a bodhrán player to get a chance to play and learn from a Lambeg Drummer. Richard has been kind enough to accept me as myself and open enough to play along with me as we both delve into each other’s stories and rhythms. It’s not often these two traditions get to converge, even though we often live within drumming distance of each other. There’s a good chance the possibilities for fun outweigh the other tried and tested options of ignoring each other. It seems to me that our two traditions have lived alongside each other here on this Island for hundreds of years with very little communication. There have been historic reasons for us to be separated and to keep our traditions apart but I’m hoping that now is the right time to be meeting, greeting and listening to each other’s Drums. Richard represents his community well, he’s strong, true to his word, kind and open to meeting me and listening to my drum.

Lambeg playing and culture has mystified me since I heard of it. My first chance to play alongside a Lambeg came in 1999 with ‘the Big Drum ‘ a band curated by Brian Fleming, then in 2016 ‘Kirru’ sang ‘A Song for a Century’ and that is where I met Richard. We have been talking and playing whenever possible and meeting in Derry was very special for me because I was on his turf. There is so much history behind each of our pursuits that when we play the past is activated, this can be scary too but it’s very rewarding for me to be able to cross into enemy culture and not be an enemy. The future could be very bright for us all, and good and loud!

I’m hoping that more of this can happen for us and that we can get beyond being a threat to each other and move on to enjoying each other’s tunes and rhythms. Who knows where it leads us but we know where the other approach has led us so I think this kind of carry on (meeting up and playing together) can guide us to a better future… for both our traditions.”

Filmmaker Myles O’Reilly is a long-time friend and collaborator with Rónán. Earlier this year, Myles produced Rónán’s new solo record ‘Tá Go Maith’. Sometimes in a collaboration there is a magical synchronicity, a telepathy. All the ducks gather in a row and all the lights stay green. And still shining bright they continue their working relationship with this film.

Speaking on the film, Myles says:

“I’ve always referred to Rónán as a Jedi Bodhrán player. He’s a force for the instrument, and perhaps one of its icons now. A Bodhrán Saint of Ireland. Most of the time I spend with him we play music together, but on learning of Richard and his Lambeg, a traditional instrument for the Orangemen of Ulster, the filmmaker in me kicked in. Two drums from such different traditions, representing two communities that live side by side but don’t often communicate with each other. I was quick to suggest we try and film the two of them playing together.

I’ve been lucky to have documented dozens of spontaneous and beautiful collaborations, but this unlikely alliance has been deeply satisfying. I hope I’ve bottled the significance of these two formidable drummers from different sides of the fence, making the effort to meet, listen and learn from each other. Both enthusiastically reaching out to understand each other. This meeting sends such a strong message of peace, reconciliation and hope where words have so often failed.”

Craig Taborn Returns to National Concert Hall in January With ‘Shadow Plays’

US pianist Craig Taborn will return to Ireland as part of his European tour of Shadow Plays, presented by the Improvised Music Company.

Taborn, who played to a sold out-audience in Dublin in 2019, returns to Dublin for one night only.

This is a golden opportunity to catch this innovative pianist centre stage live at the Kevin Barry Room for an invigorating and reflective musical experience.

John Field Room, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin 4

Saturday, 29th January 2022, 6pm

Tickets: Available at www.nch.ie

Craig is internationally acclaimed for his formidable career, as a sideman, co-leader and as a soloist on ECM records, a label that has defined the high bar solo piano performance. He has long backed many of the most forward-thinking improvisers, including James Carter, Tim Berne, Chris Potter and Dave Douglas.

A fearless improviser, he has the reputation of “disappearing almost completely into his music” [New York Times], and is recognised as one of the best living jazz pianists.

With his latest ECM release, “Shadow Plays”, Taborn explores sounds and silences, swirling colours, densities and forms, creating new music with both poetic imagination and an iron grip on his material. His control of his craft, as he unerringly creates narratives and structures from the hint of a revealed pattern, following where intuition and experience lead him, is extraordinary.

When you improvise,” he told writer Adam Shatz, in a New York Times interview, “you’re observing and creating at the same time. To make the next move, you have to get really close to what’s going on.”

“…delivering spontaneous masterworks with a majestic sense of form and captures his robust touch and uncanny sense of space in pristine sound…’’  Mike Hobart, Financial Times

Eimear Quinn Releases New Christmas Single ‘Winter Solstice’

Since the release of her version of ‘O Holy Night’ over a decade ago, Eimear’s voice has become synonymous for many with an Irish Christmas.

Her career and her long-term collaboration with Brendan Graham (composer of her Eurovision song The Voice ) actually began with a Christmas song when he first heard her sing his Winter, Fire and Snow at an Anúna concert.  Now that journey has come full circle with their new co-written song Winter Solstice.

Eimear says:   “There’s something bewitching about the Winter Solstice. That moment when the Earth tips to her extreme from the life-giving sun. Darkness dominates, and daylight is scant and fleeting. The sunrise (Newgrange) and sunset (Stonehenge) have been revered on this day for millennia”

In Winter Solstice Eimear Quinn (music) and Brendan Graham (lyrics) tempt the wonder of winter once more in this magical song, savouring the cover of darkness before the nights shorten and daylight makes her gains once more.

New Single From Adrian O’Connell ‘Doodlebug’

Berlin-based Irish artist Adrian O’Connell has delivered a little end-of-year present to his fans in the form of a new self-release, a love song called “Doodlebug” (albeit a love song for an ex).

It’s a short acoustic (and distorted acoustic) guitar track, featuring his brother Bryan (Si Schroeder, Saso, El Diablo) on drums and their childhood friend Dean on bass guitar.

Recorded by Richard Bourke (one of the mysterious supremos behind Limerick’s Out On A Limb Records), it’s a catchy little number that under-stays its welcome, and begins with the soothing sounds of some unusual creatures chatting in the middle of a jungle.

The song received its first public airing at the beginning of December in a Berlin acoustic club, where it was greeted very positively, afterwards being described as an “ohrwurm” by the organisers.

It’s available on all digital platforms, and its release is accompanied by a quite strange video on YouTube.

THUMPER Announce Their Debut Album Release Date

Irish band, THUMPER have announced that their highly anticipated debut album will arrive on Friday, March 18 2022.

Full details, including pre-order information, will be announced in January.

As contemporaries of Fontaines D.C. and The Murder Capital, THUMPER are among the leading lights of the booming guitar scene in Ireland.

Stuffing every corner of their sound with blown-out melody and psych drenched noise, THUMPER have cornered the noise-pop market with a maximalist approach. Their penchant for unabashed hooks and saccharine melody, set against their signature wall of sound, sets them apart.

Live, they are a massive beast. With a line-up of three guitarists, a bassist, and two drum kits – with sweet four-part harmony often totally at odds with the chaos below. THUMPER combine intense and wry lyricism with a huge, punk, sonic assault to startling – and hugely powerful – musical effect.

Hear all of this in their debut LP, which finally drops March 18 2022, just after they pull the live experience through an extensive European tour.

ASIWYFA Announces New Multimedia Album ‘Jettison’

Today, legendary Northern Ireland based instrumental outfit And So I Watch You From Afar has shared “I Dive Pt 1” & “II Dive Pt 2”, appearing on their ambitious upcoming multimedia album ‘Jettison’.

The latest offering from the group will be available on February 18th, 2022 via Velocity Records in partnership with Equal Vision Records.

Through 40 minutes of sonic exploration spread across nine distinct parts and a visual accompaniment by artist Sam Wiehl, ‘Jettison’ traverses the various shades of ASIWYFA’s euphoric instrumental output.

The Arco String Quartet adds moments of ethereal elegance, juxtaposed against cryptic dialogue by Emma Ruth Rundle and Neil Fallon throughout the album, which is available for pre-order here.

Peaceful opening piano chords and orchestral stirrings punctuate debut single “I Dive Pt 1” before the lift-off commences on “II Dive Pt 2″, where guitarists Rory Friers and Niall Kennedy are joined by their compatriots Chris Wee on drums and Johnny Adger on bass.

“I Dive Pt 1” introduces a mesmerizing spoken word element courtesy of Emma Ruth Rundle, while “II Dive Pt2” offers the listener a more straightforward (albeit brilliantly nuanced) version of the band’s serpentine arrangement styles and esoteric melodic sensibility.

On the scope of their latest work, the band had this to say:

“Nothing in our repertoire comes close to the ambition of this latest project—the multimedia piece ‘Jettison’. The album is a memorable experience that transports the listener away from the tumultuous times and into a blissful musical utopia.”

The band will embark on a headlining tour supporting Jettison across Europe and the UK early next year, a full itinerary is available below. You can pre-order the album here.

ABOUT ASIWYFA

Ireland’s instrumental rock quartet And So I Watch You From Afar has defied the layman’s definition of post-rock by absorbing new ideas and pushing the boundaries of their intricate and ecstatic guitar-based compositions. Crashing out of the gate with the big-riff worship and arena-level melodic heroics of their eponymous debut, ASIWYFA have continuously introduced new spins on their original sound while simultaneously expanding their sonic palette with every new album, taking in and repurposing everything from African highlife to Irish trad to the weirdo math-rock of the late ‘90s / early ‘00s. Their upcoming multi-media piece Jettison was conceived by And So I Watch You From Afar’s guitarist Rory Friers and brought to life by the band, orchestrator Connor O’Boyle, the Arco String Quartet, and visual artist Sam Wiehl. Jettison is a fusion of ASIWYFA’s life-affirming musical acrobatics, the sweeping grandeur of film scores, and the surreal and sublime capabilities of moving pictures

Jettison is by no means a normal ASIWYFA album. Rather, it is a very deliberate departure as opposed to an evolutionary step to increasingly ambitious, complex, and conceptual work. The full Jettison experience, replete with Wiehl’s visuals and the string accompaniments, will only happen occasionally, such as the full-house October 2021 performance at The Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s Southbank Centre. Yet even in the album format, Jettison is a special experience, one that transports the listener away from the tumultuous times and into a blissful musical utopia. Equal Vision Records is proud to present this document of the aural component of Jettison to the world on CD, LP, and digital platforms on February 18, 2022.
