Irish Music Rights Organisation and Law Society Annual Copyright Lecture 2023

The annual IMRO/Law Society of Ireland Copyright lecture will take place in May this year in the Law Society lecture theatre at Blackhall Place. The topic will be the new press publishers’ right and the creation of a well-functioning marketplace for copyright in the EU.

Speakers:

Dr Mark Hyland, Law Society IMRO adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property

Dr. Mark Hyland has been a lecturer at the College of Business, Technological University Dublin since March, 2020. Prior to this, he was a lecturer in International Intellectual Property Law at Bangor University Law School, Wales. His main field of research is Intellectual Property Law with a special focus on Copyright Law. He also has a strong interest in the interface between Intellectual Property Law and related fields such as Information Technology Law and, Competition Law. In 2016, he was awarded a Bangor University Teaching Fellowship for his commitment to teaching excellence and student support. Dr. Hyland was awarded his PhD by Newcastle University in 2014 for a thesis that critically evaluates the application of the tort Private International Law rules to the internet, using online copyright infringements as a case study. In June 2019, he was appointed the inaugural IMRO adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Law Society of Ireland. Dr. Hyland’s research has been published in specialist law journals such as the European Intellectual Property Review, Communications Law and Computer and Telecommunications Law Review. His most recent research on website blocking injunctions (analysed in an IP context) was published in Law, Innovation and Technology (Vol. 12, Issue 1, 2020). In that article, he critically evaluates web blocking injunctions using the important tests of effectiveness and legitimacy. Dr. Hyland’s current research focuses on digital copyright and how geo-blocking/geolocation technology can be used to facilitate the territorial licensing of digital copyright works. His research will also examine possible tensions (in the specific context of digital copyright content) between two important EU laws: the Geo-blocking Regulation and the Portability Regulation. Dr Hyland is a qualified solicitor and, from time to time, contributes articles on EU IP/IT Law developments to the Eurlegal section of the Law Society Gazette.
