SONIC VIGIL Returns to Cork on Oct 21

SONIC VIGIL 10 @ St. Peter’s Church, Cork
Oct. 21st, 2pm – 8pm, 2017
Entry: €5

Now in its 10th year, we present SONIC VIGIL, a marathon of new and improvised music, sound art, live electronics, installations and more.

Sonic Vigil emerged from an increasingly vibrant Cork-based improvisation scene. It was founded in 2005 to create an annual celebration of radical musics unrepresented elsewhere in the country. It is a unique event that has taken place in some of Cork’s iconic cultural venues and has established Cork as Ireland’s leading centre for Sound Art, free improvisation and other forms of experimental music. Its influence and audience has spread beyond the Republic; recordings of previous Vigils are commercially available, and in 2016 members of the core Vigil team performed a ‘Vigilette’ in Berlin’s renowned improvisation venue, Ausland.

The marathon includes local and international artists, many of whom are working together for the first time. The audience is free to come and go during the 6-hour event, and to walk amongst the performers. Sonic Vigil is a multifaceted and collaborative series; CD, LP and DVD releases, concerts, presentations, installations, workshops, residencies and many other events are presented as preludes to the marathon itself.

Sonic Vigil is curated by a multidisciplinary team comprising composers Karen Power and John Godfrey and visual/Sound artists Danny Mc Carthy, Irene Murphy and Mick O’ Shea.

FINDING “YOUR OWN VOICE”

“You have to find your own voice”. This is a phrase every emerging film composer hears more than once. As a result, a significant amount of head scratching is required just to figure out what, exactly, is meant by it and, equally perplexing, “How do I accomplish it?” Like other cliche phrases, this one rolls off the tongues of studio execs and composer agents. Just another WTF? moment in the educational life of an aspiring media composer.

Richard Bellis is an Emmy award-winning composer; author of “The Emerging Film Composer: An Introduction to the People, Problems and Psychology of the Film Music Business”; is a past president of the Society of Composers & Lyricists; served on the faculty of the University of Southern California’s Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television course and UCLA Extension’s Film Scoring Certificate program: served on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and is the director and mentor of the “ASCAP Television and Film Scoring Workshop with Richard Bellis”. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of ASCAP and lectures internationally on film and media music.

Sounding the Feminists (STF) | Public Meeting | 13th Sept

Sounding the Feminists (STF) is an Irish-based collective of composers, sound artists, performers, musicologists, educators, students, critics, promoters, industry professionals, organisations, and individuals committed to promoting and publicising the creative work of female musicians. STF champions the principles of equality, fairness, inclusivity, and diversity.  STF affirm the need to take conscious steps to ensure that these principles inform Irish musical life. STF want audiences to hear the voices of those who continue to be marginalised due to their sex, gender identity, sexuality, race, and class.

Public Meeting: Wednesday Sept. 13th
Time: 5:30 – 7pm
Location: IMRO, Copyright House, Pembroke Row, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin 2.
RSVP:  info@nullsoundingthefeminists.com

STF recognises that contemporary attitudes, policies, and practices towards music and gender are often built on institutions and traditions that resist change. In solidarity with ground-breaking sister movements such as Waking the Feminists, the STF Working Group was established in 2017. Their aim is to take positive action to improve the representation of women across the Irish music sector and communities.

They seek to do so by working with partner groups on the following priority areas:
• To address gender balance issues / intersectional feminism issues across the music sector
• To create new systems to promote gender fairness across promoters / venues / funders / educators / curators / musicians
• To build a community where issues of gender can be discussed
• To organise and audit areas of the Irish music sector in relation to gender balance
• To liaise with educational organisations and institutions throughout the country
• To liaise with other international groups such as Fair Play and Sound pressure
• To encourage younger generations of musicians to become involved in these debates

STF has convened a Working Group who will lead the way to realising its collective goals.

Members of the STF Working Group:
Chair: Dr. Karen Power
Secretary: Dr. Jenny O’Connor-Madsen
Engagement Officer: Amanda Feery
Education Development Officer: Dr. Laura Watson
Events Officer: Jane Deasy
Projects Officer: Dr. Ann Cleare

This collective needs you and your voice to help alter and diversify the Irish music sector, so that gender and inclusivity moves beyond a topic and simply is a part of our culture.

SEE:HEAR | A unique stage show about how rock’n’roll taught Nick Kelly to make movies

Creating music for film and TV is an art – but defining the sometimes-mystical quality that will help a music score succeed is often difficult to quantify.

For anyone with an interest in the process of scoring for film/TV and pathways for access to this important of aspect of audio visual post production this upcoming IMRO seminar will provide you with invaluable insights and knowledge to help move your career forward.

Hosted by Award winning film maker, musician, advertising copywriter, short story writer Nick Kelly and leading composer for film/TV and advertisements John Gerard Walsh this event is undoubtedly a must attend event for any songwriter or composer looking to break into this notoriously difficult area for emerging Irish composers and songwriters to gain a foothold.

Nick Kelly is responsible for some of the best loved Irish singles of all time with his former band The Fat Lady Sings, is a Choice Music Prize-nominated solo artist, and was voted #3 Best Irish Songwriter (after Hozier and Damien Rice) in the 2015 Hot Press Readers Poll.

In recent years he’s also become an Oscar-shortlisted filmmaker (for his 2011 short film “Shoe”), whose work has been featured by New York’s MoMA.

To coincide with the Irish cinema release (8th Sept) of his much-anticipated first feature film “The Drummer And The Keeper” (winner of “Best Irish First Feature” at the 2017 Galway Film Fleadh) Nick brings his updated SEE:HEAR show to IMRO on Friday 25th August.

SEE:HEAR intertwines live performances of some of Nick’s best loved songs, exclusive scenes from “The Drummer And The Keeper”, and a witty and compelling talk on the many links he sees between making music and movies.

Nick will be joined on the night by composer John Gerard Walsh who scored music for the film. John Gerard Walsh is an award winning Composer. Originally from Cavan Town, he now lives and works in Dublin. In his formative days, he studied classical guitar and music theory at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in between touring with rock bands and scoring projects for up and coming film directors. A string of commissions for the national broadcaster RTE followed with scores for the television series “Rebellion 1798”, “Proof” and opening themes for “The Six Nations”, “World Cup”, “Prime Time” and “Television News” to mention a few. Through his commercial music company Symphonic, his music has featured in major advertising campaigns for Guinness, Carlsberg, Heineken, Fáilte Ireland, The Gathering, Jameson, The Olympic Games and the launch campaign for Eir. In addition to “The Drummer and The keeper”  he has recently scored the feature films ”Cherry Tree” and provided music for the Discovery Channel drama series “Harley and the Davidsons”. John is also a founding member and songwriter with “The Carnival Brothers”.

Date: Friday 25th August
Time: 7pm – 9pm
Location: IMRO, Copyright House, Pembroke Row, Dublin 2
