What is a Musically ‘Creative’ City?
Adam Krims, Professor of Music Analysis, University of Nottingham

"Urban geographers and urban planners have, for decades, touted music (as well as other arts) as a way to regenerate cities economically and culturally, using the notion of the ‘creative city’ to frame such notion; and yet, music scholars have not become involved in the debates surrounding such urban planning. More recently, a great deal of skepticism has arisen, especially within academic communities, concerning the notion of ‘creativity’ and to what extent it is a useful concept in studying and shaping cities (e.g., Pratt 2008, Martin and Sunley 2003). Often borrowing some of its prestige from the related but still distinct notion of a knowledge-based economy (van Heur 2010), the notion of a ‘creative city’ remains an issue of attraction and debate, even, as Pratt and others have pointed out, in the absence of any concrete notion of what ‘creativity’ even means. My paper will examine this issue and attempt to concretize the notion of ‘creativity’ with respect, specifically, to music, and to attach the notion to issues of cities and urban location. Borrowing from Storper and Veneble’s (2004) identification of the kinds of learning that depend on “F2F” contact, I argue that music learning represents a particularly salient case. While one need not be quite as skeptical as Evans (2009) about the viability of stimulating urban musical creativity, some of these particular characteristics of music learning, and the heightened dependence on locational variables, suggest that the particulars of musical creativity require attention to particular characteristics of musical learning."

Adam Krims is Professor of Music Analysis at the University of Nottingham. He specialises in urban geography and recent music history. He has also published on critical theory, cultural theory, and African-American musics, including hip-hop. He is author of Music and Urban Geography (Routledge, 2007), as well as Rap Music and the Poetics of Identity (Cambridge University Press, 2000). He has contributed to Music Analysis, Nineteenth-Century Music, and numerous other journals and essay collections, urban change, music theory, and political economy.

Blumenkraft Ready to Hit it Again

Waterford dance duo 'Blumenkraft' look to be on track for another top hit with their latest offering, 'Sunsation'. This follows on from their single ‘Fresh Times’, which created quite a stir this Summer by spending 4 weeks in the UK Club Charts Top40,  with a peak at number 8 ahead of Kylie and Christina Aguilera.

Signed on Switzerland's Milla Records, the brain-child of international dance music legend Yves Larock, ‘Sunsation’ is a hot new collaboration combining the talents of Blumenkraft and Fred Lilla.

Fred Lilla is a young Swiss prodigy whose productions have already been supported by Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia and Avicii. Still only 17, Fred has progressed from cutting up well-received bootlegs to releasing his own singles and receiving critical acclaim. Blumenkraft first met Fred at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland earlier this year, where they made plans to work on a series of tunes together.

On ‘Sunsation’, Fred and Blumenkraft team up to deliver an anthemic dance-floor monster which is already picking up notable pre-release attention across the airwaves and on the dance floor. There is already strong club support coming from international DJ elite – namely Above & Beyond, Erick Morillo, Fedde Le Grand, Dubfire, and Markus Schulz to name but a few – as well as an early entry in the DMC World House Music Chart Top40 and European-wide radio support.

In addition to the combined production talents of Fred Lilla and Marc ‘Blumenkraft’ Roosli, ‘Sunsation’ features a stunning vocal performance from Blumenkraft’s Kiki and this unique collaboration looks set to be a huge success for the trio.

‘Sunsation’ will be available on i-Tunes, Beatport and Traxsource from Friday 12th November.

To celebrate this exciting collaboration Fred Lilla and Blumenkraft have organised a free giveaway of 'Criss Cross', one of their unreleased tracks, while you are waiting for ‘Sunsation’. Head over to http://bit.ly/ddQgXa for a preview of ‘Sunsation’ and to claim your free tune.

Gerry O'Beirne and Rosie Shipley are proud to announce the release of their duo album

"Yesterday I Saw the Earth Beautiful"

Irish singer songwriter, Gerry O'Beirne, and American fiddler, Rosie Shipley, have been delighting audiences worldwide for almost a decade.

A native of Ennis, Co. Clare, Gerry O'Beirne is known for his much-covered original songs, innovative guitar tunings and prowess on a variety of stringed instruments, including 12-string guitar, National Steel guitar and ukulele. O'Beirne's recent instrumental album, "The Bog Bodies and Other Stories", was hailed as 'one of the most perfect acoustic albums I've heard' by National Public Radio's John Diliberto.

Rosie Shipley has been playing the fiddle since she was three years old. She learned her first Irish tunes at age eight from master fiddler, Brendan Mulvihill, in Baltimore, MD. As a teenager, Rosie attended the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where she became well versed in Cape Breton-style fiddling. "Well Kept Secrets", her recording with singer Lisa Moscatiello, was described as 'achingly beautiful' by The Washington Times.

Together, Gerry and Rosie have been called 'an unstoppable and potently creative force'. Featuring new songs by Gerry, fiddle music from Ireland, Cape Breton and Appalachia, and two Irish poems set to music, "Yesterday I Saw the Earth Beautiful" is the long-awaited result of Gerry and Rosie's artistic collaboration.

The Walls | Live Show

THE SUGAR CLUB
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 5th

Who would have thought it, but apart from a show last summer in the Odessa Club The Walls have not done a Dublin gig since they played The Village back in 2005.

The band have been keeping a low profile in Ireland for much of the past four years but have been buried away in their studio working on new music and a new visual-based live show that has taken the last two years to perfect.

Last summer the double A-sided single Carrying the Fire/Phantom Power gave a taster of things to come.
The Sugar Club will play host to the new show on Friday Nov 5th.

Much of the set features material from the forthcoming album “Stop the Lights”, but old favourites from Hi-Lo and New Dawn Breaking will also be re-visited. Doors are at 8pm with the live music kicking off at 9pm sharp.

Tickets are priced at €10 + booking fee from Tickets.ie

Waltons World Masters / RTÉ lyric fm Nationwide Gospel Competition

Win the opportunity to perform at the National Concert Hall as support act for the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama!

Waltons World Masters will be welcoming The Blind Boys of Alabama to Dublin and the National Concert Hall on Monday, 31 January 2011. Since 2003, Waltons New School of Music’s World Masters series has brought to Ireland some of the world’s most extraordinary musicians and performing groups, including Buena Vista Social Club, Bobby McFerrin and the Wayne Shorter Quartet to name just a few. Ireland has its own great tradition of gospel music, and one very special aspect of this concert is that the support act will be chosen from Irish gospel choirs and ensembles by a nationwide competition. The winning choir/ensemble will perform a set of up to 40 minutes’ duration before The Blind Boys of Alabama take to the stage.

Eligibility
All gospel choirs/ensembles – school, college, amateur and semi-professional – are welcome to enter.

The Competition
After all entries are received, a shortlist of three finalists will be chosen by a jury and materials forwarded to The Blind Boys of Alabama for their final decision.

The winning choir/ensemble will be announced by Liz Nolan on RTÉ lyric fm’s Lunchtime Classics programme on Friday, 7 January 2011, and will perform at the National Concert Hall on 31 January 2011 at 8pm, as guest artists of The Blind boys of Alabama.  It is RTÉ lyric fm’s intention, subject to the availability of facilities, to record the concert for subsequent broadcast.

The winning choir/ensemble will be responsible for their own transport to/from the venue, as well as accommodation (if required). The choir/ensemble will receive five pairs of tickets to the concert for guests, but there will be no monetary remuneration.

Entry
Entries must be received by 5pm on Friday, 12 November 2010. Late entries will not be accepted.
Full details of entry are availabale at the Waltons World Masters website here: http://www.newschool.ie/Waltons_World_Masters_RTE_lyric_fm_Gospel_Competition/Default.2370.html

Úna Keane

Dubliner Úna Keane releases debut LP ‘Trees’ on November 5th 2010 on Marabou Records, her own cottage industry label.

This is a record of 11 lovingly crafted songs exploring the intricacies of growing up, falling down, getting back up, smiling and reflecting upon it all. The message is overwhelmingly positive. Úna will be touring Ireland in November to promote ‘Trees’, with a UK Tour planned for early next year.

‘Trees’ resides for the most part in the alternative acoustic genre while dipping occasionally into the realm of pop. A more quirky, left of centre approach on songs like lead single ‘Alice’, ‘Saw a Wave’ and the hook-heavy
‘Microscopic’ point to one unafraid of experimentation, of blurring boundaries.

Following a Postgrad in Music technology, Úna set up her own Recording studio in 2008. Much fun was then had figuring out all the techie stuff around microphones, preamps, pianos and ProTools until it all started to make sense.

The Album soundscape is made up of more than 10 instruments: Pianos, synths, glockenspiels, vocals and a myriad of interesting and unusual sound effects come courtesy of Úna. Drums, bass and electric & acoustic guitars add edge, while lush cello lines embue the songs with layers of velvety warmth. An oboe, a French accordion and an uilleann pipe drone thrown in for good measure complete the line-up. Recording took place between Úna’s home studio in Kilmainham and friend Ben Rawlins’s studio at the Conservatory of Music & Drama in Rathmines between 2008 and 2010. The album was mixed by Ben, with Úna and Ben co-producing the record.

A classically trained pianist, Úna’s take on piano has been informed by a deep-seated love of the music of Beethoven, Debussy and such Film Composer luminaries as Yann Tiersen and Ennio Morricone. In 2008 she was the recipient of an IMRO scholarship to pursue study in Film Scoring at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston – garnering a Distinction for her short, but challenging 6-month stint.

ALBUM LAUNCH: Thursday, 4th November 2010 @ The Grand Social, Dublin
