Crossing the Shannon – January 2011

Music Network Traditional Irish Music Tour

Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, voice, flute
John Wynne, flute
John McEvoy, fiddle
John Blake, guitar, flute, bouzouki

Music Network presents acclaimed vocalist Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh and the three Johns – Wynne (flute), McEvoy (fiddle) and Blake (guitar, flute, bouzouki). History, geography and music intermingle as they celebrate the rich heritage of the West of Ireland. In times past, many fine musicians crossed the Shannon to board the emigrant boat, fuelling the vibrant Irish music scenes in London and Birmingham where John Blake and John McEvoy learned their craft. This tour is a musical homecoming, re-crossing the Shannon to explore the wild dance music, slow airs and haunting songs of the West that likewise inspired Muireann Nic Amhlaoidh and John Wynne, as they grew up in their respective home counties of Kerry and Roscommon.

Though Muireann is best known for her work with Danú, winning the BBC 2 Folk Award for "Best Group" in 2004, she has also performed with the likes of Julie Fowlis, Éamon Doorley, Darrell Scott, Liam Clancy and The Bulgarian Women’s Choir. Regarded as one of the best traditional Irish flute players of his generation, John Wynne is a regular collaborator with fiddler John McEvoy and both players are proud ambassadors for the music of North Connaught, while multi-instrumentalist John Blake is a highly sought after musician who has featured on albums by Lamond Gillespie, Mick Leahy, Colm Gannon and Sean Potts.

First Fortnight launches star-studded line-up for the New Year

The line-up for First Fortnight, the annual music gig that brightens up January for the bargain price of just €10, was officially unveiled this week. Showcasing 2011’s hottest new Irish talent, First Fortnight will feature headline acts Codes, And So I Watch You From Afar, with support from Dark Room Notes and Le Galaxie for an exciting music event in The Button Factory, Temple Bar on Saturday 15th January 2011.

First Fortnight is an arts-based mental health awareness project that happens in the first two weeks of every year, providing a mix of inspiring debate and musical entertainment. This year First Fortnight has teamed up with Amnesty International Ireland to support its campaign challenging mental health prejudice and discrimination.

Speaking of the event, Daragh Anderson of Codes said: “We got involved with this event because mental health affects all of us – whether it’s directly or a friend, a colleague, or family member who is experiencing difficulties.
A gig like this is great, as not only does music bring people together, it also clearly shows that mental health problems aren’t taboo, and that simply by being open and talking about it, we can help fight the prejudice and discrimination that exists.”

The bands are contributing their time free of charge and at just €10 per ticket, all proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International Ireland.

Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International Ireland, said: “Our research showed that nearly two thirds of people said they had been avoided or shunned because of a mental health problem, and more than a third of people said they had been treated unfairly in relation to their social life.

“We know that the Christmas and New Year periods can be a particularly difficult and lonely time, so having an event like this in the calendar is great timing. It gives us an opportunity to come together and fight mental health prejudice and discrimination.”

The music gig will be preceded by a lively discussion on the topic of attitudes and behaviours towards people with mental health problems in Ireland today. The panel will include high profile individuals representing the arts, personal experience, business and service providers debating prejudice and discrimination.

First Fortnight – Codes, And So I Watch You From Afar, Dark Room Notes & Le Galaxie
Saturday 15th January
The Button Factory, Curved St, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Doors @ 7:30pm
Tickets and further info at: www.firstfortnight.com

The afternoon discussion is free of charge and will also take place in The Button Factory at 2.30pm.

Somadrone – Depth of Field

Release Date: December 3rd 2010

www.iamsomadrone.com

“Detachment that we find in Steve Reich or Brian Eno circa Music for Airports” – Wire Magazine 07
“Of Pattern and Purpose is a collection of blissfully slow-motion, deeply anchored bleeps” – Irish Times 07
San Francisco based Somadrone’s third long player, Depth of Field, is a follow up to 2007’s Of Pattern and Purpose and 2005’s Fuzzing Away to a Whisper, released on Trust Me I’m a Thief Records.
Member of Dublin’s cult band, Redneck Manifesto, Somadrone recorded Depth of Field in Dublin, Ireland / Siggen, Germany / Stockholm, Sweden / Noyant la Gravoyere, France / Berkeley and San Francisco, California, A number of these recordings were written and recorded at various artist residencies including EMS (Institute of Electro Acoustic Music, Stockholm), during free intervals while study for a PhD in Music or while living in temporary exile.
The result is far from pre-existing material: 7 out of the eight 8 tracks have vocals, more acoustic instruments and standard song forms. Along with aid of a brass and string combo, Depth of Field is a totally new sound for Somadrone; a minimalist inspired electronic pop songbook, somewhere between Ennio Morricone, Jim O Rourke and Air. Depth of Field is out on Skinny Wolves Records, December 3rd 2010 on Vinyl, Cassette and Download.

Michael John – “A Truant and a Pirate”

“A Truant and a Pirate” is the debut solo album from Michael John. Having had previous successes as a member of bands, The Marshals and Television Room, Michael John has since made a shift in direction to focus on his solo material.

“A Truant and a Pirate” is a much more stripped back affair than Michael John’s previous recordings, with an emphasis on simple acoustic folk songs. Opting for a home recording instead of working from a studio, the album is the product of a single microphone and Korg recording console. Mandolins, violins and cellos are introduced to add to the texture of the recording.

You can catch Michael John live in The Song Room, The Globe, Dublin 2 on Wednesday 1st December.

New Selection Process for Eurovision Song Contest 2011

RTÉ has announced a new selection process for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Five music industry professionals have been enlisted to develop and mentor five separate song entries to compete in the Eurosong 2011, where the winner will be selected by a combination of public vote and regional juries.

Speaking about the decision RTÉ Eurovision Co-ordinator Julian Vignoles said: "Given our mixed results in recent years, we felt it was our duty to look again at our selection procedure to see what method could improve Ireland's chances of winning on the Eurovision stage. Ireland has a vibrant and successful music industry and we want to find the best performer to represent our country. This year we have decided to suspend the open call for entries and instead harness the skills and experience of professionals in the Irish music business to source the talent and the song that has the potential to be a Eurovision winner.

We are enlisting five people who each have proven success in different areas of the music industry so the public will have five strong entries to choose from in Eurosong 2011".

The five mentors are:
Caroline Downey-Desmond – Director MCD and event producer
Ronan Hardiman – composer (Lord of the Dance)
David Hayes – Musical Director and arranger (Tommy Fleming and Riverdance)
Willie Kavanagh – Chairman, EMI Music Ireland
Liam Lawton – composer and performer

Each of the mentors will source or commission the song and the performer, with all five entries to be performed for the first time on The Late Late Show Eurosong 2011 on February 11th. As was the case last year, the winning entry will be selected by a combination of public vote and regional jury.

The winner will go on to represent Ireland in the 56th Eurovision Song Contest Semi-Final in Düsseldorf, Germany, in May 2011. The ESC is consistently one of the most popular annual television events, both in Ireland and across Europe, with the final attracting an audience of 69 million last year.
