THE MIGHTY STEF – TMS AND THE BAPTISTS

Album number three by THE MIGHTY STEF contains nine new songs of sin and redemption where hope and hopelessness walk hand in hand down the wet streets of Manhattans Lower East Side to the dingy graveyards of Berlin where the record was conceived, written and recorded.

Stef travelled to Berlin to form the gothic-folk-rock congregation known as The Baptists, comprised of the members of Humanzi, before undertaking and executing this record. While drinking heavily in the bars of the city and romanticising about the potential of the project, The Baptists solidified a plan, did some days of rehearsing and embarked on an extreme recording stint with German punk rock legend Tom Schwoll.

'The Baptist Record' is one of The Mighty Stef's most ambitious projects. It also documents an exciting period in the song-writing of Stefan Murphy who on this, his third full length album, shares some of the writing credits with his fellow Baptists.

The Mighty Stef, was born in Dublin and raised on a tradition of songs and stories from the darkside of life. This irish troubador and his men explore the landscape of Rock N' Roll in all its upbeat fiery-fury and in all its dream-like glory. TMS AND THE BAPTISTS is his third stop on the journey to that sacred sound. It is a record to be reckoned with no matter who you are or what your tastes may be.

IMTV Awards

The nominees for the IMTV Awards have just been announced and if the talent is anything to go by, this years awards are sure to be an important night on the Irish music calendar.

Nominees for Sexiest Video ‘The Rubberbandits’ with ‘Sweet Jane’ front woman, Lydia Des Dolles.

The awards take place this Wednesday in The Academy celebrating the plethora of great music videos that come out of Ireland. With a total of 35 videos nominated, we see some returning categories, as well as a few brand new ones… and of course some familiar faces.

This year sees big name artists such as Cathy Davey, Two Door Cinema Club, The Coronas, Sweet Jane, Nadine Coyle, The Rubberbandits, Mighty Stef, Colin Devlin, Fight Like Apes and many many more, all battle it out against each other in their various categories.

Electronic Dj Shit Robot’s new video, directed by the uber talented Eoghan Kidney will go head to head with The Villagers’ ‘Becoming a Jackal’ video for the title of ‘Best Effects’ .

The suavely dressed Sweet Jane will lock fashion horns with pop rockers The Coronas and indie favourites Tallulah Does the Hullah for ‘Best Styled Video’.

Brand new to this years awards are not one, but two opportunities for the public to have their say – with public votes being taken for categories: “Sexiest Video” as well as “Viewers Choice” award which includes every video nominated. Plastic bags are the new lingerie as The Rubberbandits go head to head with Irish sweetheart Nadine Coyle and Dublin’s hottest drag Queen Veda in the ‘Sexiest Video’ category.

Winners are chosen by a panel of judges which includes some of Ireland’s most experienced musos and the night will pay tribute to Ireland’s most talented directors, producers and musicians. Last year saw favourites Fight Like Apes and Wallis Bird take home prizes while directorial talent Eoghan Kidney received a gong for Director of the Year.

These awards are slowly becoming the most sought after accolade in the Irish music industry and the night itself promises to be a veritable feast of live performances and awesome video footage from some of the country’s most talented artists with some interesting surprises on the night also.

What was the name of your first love?
Says Leo Moran: It’s a shell-hard cold morning; up out of bed, you’ve brushed your teeth, wolfed down a bowl of corn flakes; now, with your schoolbag on your back, you are out walking in the icy air, breath like you’re smoking, not looking forward to Maths, first class, then Latin – but you know, as you approach the corner of the Dublin Road, at Scratch Moran’s sweet-shop……that…… if your timing is right………..just about six minutes past nine, when you come to cross the road,… that a car will be pulling up outside the Mercy Convent, your heart will rush, your head will spin and out of the passenger-side back door of that red Ford Cortina, registration 6954 IM, will step the most beautiful, most desired, soft and warm-looking prettiest creature ! in the world and you may speak shyly for the thirty yards from the car to her school gate; the day is made, it won’t get any better than this, and you look forward to lunchtime, the junior youth club on Tuesday night and six minutes past nine tomorrow morning.

Red Cortina (First Love Stays With You Forever): A song about the first time you fell in love… As the lyric says: Christmas Party Seventy-Seven… Heart Beat Like An Earthly Tremor…. First Love Stays With You Forever……

Peter Kay joined the band on stage for a few songs at their album launch last month after flying in specially to see them: He commented: “My family and I have been massive fans for years. It was great to get back with them again and I know the album is going to be huge”.

They have also played Glastonbury and the V Festivals this year – Have completed a sell-out tour of the USA, starting at the Highline Ballroom in New York City and finishing with a massive concert at the Cape Cod Melody Tent in Massachusetts and are now about to start their UK tour. The new album which is out in all good record stores now, THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF.. went straight in at no.1 in the Irish Charts and stayed in the top 10 for over a month.

USA Today Reported: “Like Bruce Springsteen They have the ability to express the core of human condition by evoking local characters and haunts, their songs are poignant vignettes of real life filled with tragedy, triumph and humour which transcend cultural boundaries”
