Sligo based G Miley join Ra Ra Riot, Melissa Auf der Maur, Flying Lotus, Hemoptysis, Darrell Scott, Jim Campilongo, Jackson Browne and David Lindley and other self-released and independent label talent as Nominees for The 10th Independent Music Awards (The IMAs), the influential awards program for independent bands and fans.
Representing the broad spectrum of today’s global independent music scene, the more than 300 Nominees in nearly 70 Song, Album, Music Video and Design categories were culled from submissions from North America, South America, Asia, Australia and Europe.
Known for celebrating artists that follow their own muse, The 10th IMA Nominees are an eclectic mix of rising stars including Strawfoot (Alt. Country Song), Hemoptysis (Metal/Hardcore Song), and Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three (Amerciana Album) and established talent including telecaster virtuoso, Jim Campilongo (Instrumental Album), experimental multi-genre artist, Flying Lotus (Music Video and Dance/Electronica Song), and indie rockers, Ra Ra Riot (Pop/Rock Album). Perhaps better known as major label acts, this year’s Nominees strutting their independence include former Hole bassist, Melissa Auf der Maur (Indie/Alt./Hard Rock Album), and songwriting legend Jackson Browne with David Lindley (Live Performance Album).
Winners will be determined by a panel of 62 influential artist and industry judges including Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann, Pete Wentz, Bettye LaVette, Seal, Adam Duritz, Ozzy Osbourne, Arturo Sandoval, Martin Atkins, Andrew W. After months of hints and rumours we can now confirm that one of the summer’s most highly anticipated blockbuster movies, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will features original music by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Rod and Gab.
The score for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 brings together one of the most respected and sought-after composers (an Academy Award winner with a further eight additional Oscar nominations for films such as Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins to name but a few) and the premier guitar playing duo in the world – Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
Speaking on the creative process Zimmer recently said, 'The way we’re working, the three of us are sitting in a room, I play average keyboards and they play brilliant guitars and we’re writing cues together. There’s a force, a ferocity, about their sound.'
You will be able to hear the fruits of their labours when Walt Disney Records release the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on May 17, 2011.
The movie, once again starring Johnny Depp as captain Jack Sparrow, joined for this outing by Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane, will follow in movie theaters on May 20, 2011.

Live At The Hollywood Bowl – August
Not content with one groundbreaking project this summer Rodrigo Y Gabriela are also limbering up for what promise to be two of their most unforgettable concerts ever. On Friday August 12 and Saturday August 13 Rodrigo Y Gabriela will perform live at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.
In a celebration of the passion and rhythm of the guitar, this extraordinary concert brings the orchestra together with Rodrigo y Gabriela in the illustrious and famous setting of the magnificent Hollywood Bowl – site of some legendary concerts through the years. Professor Jane Edwards joined the Irish World Academy in 1999 after 7 years leading the music therapy programme at the University of Queensland. Australia. She is Director for the Music & Health Research Group, founded to bring together researchers from Ireland, Germany and Norway in collaborative research about the arts in healthcare. Jane is an experienced clinician, researcher and teacher, with specialist expertise in music in medical contexts, and music therapy in family centred care. She is the President of the International Association for Music & Medicine (www.iammonline.com). In 2011 she is convening a summer school "Qualitative methods in healthcare research" at UL funded by IRCHSS and in collaboration with colleagues from NUIG, and UL faculty from Occupational Therapy and Sociology.
Tríona McCaffrey is a graduate of the MA in Music Therapy Programme at the Irish World Academy and has worked as a music therapy practitioner in mental health for four years having established a full-time position in Mayo Mental Health Services. She has worked in the areas of Recovery, community mental health and Psychiatry of Old Age and is particularly interested in service users experience of mental health services in Ireland. Tríona currently lectures on the MA Music Therapy programme at the Academy.
Sue Baines, MMT, MTA is an internationally renowned Music Therapist who has worked in mental health and long term care for many years. She teaches in the Bachelor of Music Therapy program at Capilano College in North Vancouver, Canada and is a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery having trained at the Southeast Institute for Music Centred Psychotherapy in Atlanta, GA. Sue completed her Masters in Music Therapy from New York University and has published a number of articles in Music Therapy and other disciplinary publications. She has taught workshops and seminars across Canada as well as in the United States and South Africa.
Dr Dominic Fannon MD, MMSc, MRCPsych, MSc (CBT) Dr Fannon is a consultant general adult psychiatrist with a special interest in rehabilitation with the Recovery Team, Mayo Mental Health Service and visiting senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. He is Chair of Faculty of Social and Rehabilitation Psychiatry, College of Psychiatry of Ireland. He trained on the western region postgraduate training scheme and at the Maudsley Hospital. His special interests include psychological treatment of psychosis and early intervention.
Tommy Hayes completed a Master’s Degree in Music Therapy from the University of Limerick in 2002. He currently works as a Music Therapist in a variety of clinical settings in the area of special needs and mental health and has extensive experience of working with adolescents. He is in his final year of training as a ‘Guided Imagery & Music’ therapist with Professor Leslie Bunt. Tommy is also a renowned percussionist at the forefront of traditional Irish music for over 30 years, having performed and recorded with most of the great names in traditional music and beyond. He has released two solo albums “An Ras” and “A Room in the North” and has recorded music for a number of film and theatre productions with output numbers in excess of 400 albums.
This week sees the eagerly anticipated release of the new single from indie quintet Furlo. Your Entire Glows is another superbly crafted high-energy track from the Derry five piece in the same manner as their critically acclaimed EP’s Concussed Girls and Signature.
Since their formation in the summer of 2006, they have forged a path in the music scene via their first EP Concussed Girls. This self-release gained the band much respect from critics and press alike. 2010 saw the release of their 2nd EP Signature which received airplay support from BBC Radio and local stations alike. The band finished the year off by signing with Belfast Indie Label Yogen Records.
2011 promises to be a busy year for Furlo with the release of their debut single Your Entire Glows in February and working hard towards the completion of their debut album only to come up for air playing select shows and festivals in the UK & Ireland.

The winner of the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year 2010 will be selected on the night by the judging panel at the Choice Music Prize Live Event at Vicar Street, Dublin on Thursday March 3.
The winning act will receive €10,000, a prize fund which has been provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA).
All of the shortlisted acts will receive a specially-commissioned award, courtesy of the
Recorded Artists Actors & Performers Ltd (RAAP).
All of the shortlisted albums are available through retail partners HMV in their stores nationwide with the exception of The Cast Of Cheers album which is only available via download.
Video packages of all the acts on the night will be produced by Irish production company Old Hat.

Kildare singer/songwriter Valentine Black has no fear of his latest single, ‘Take me to your leader’, being used in any of the current election campaigns!
It’s a protest song for the 21st century, channelling the anger felt by people with the Irish establishment. However, rather than a 17 verse lament, he gets to the point in a three minute pop-rock song. The lyrics may make you think but the chorus will make you hum along!

Valentine Black is the alter ego of Kildare musician Peco Mc Loughlin. Having fronted a number of bands, most recently indie-rockers Bright Light Fiasco who enjoyed success with two top 40 singles, Peco decided to go solo in late 2008. He’s been writing songs since and is currently recording his debut album, due for release in Summer 2011. The lead single from the album, ‘Retrospect’, was released in October 2010 with some glowing reviews and his new politically charged single, ‘Take me to your leader’, is due for release in March 2011.
He has already created quite a bit of interest making the heats of The JD Set in 2009, being selected in May 2010 for youngrebel.co.uk's international playlist and playing the live heats for Phantom FM’s ‘Next Becks Thing’ in August 2010. He has recently performed a number of well received showcases at Indie Week Canada in October 2010. And only this month has been selected as a ‘Youtube Superstar’ on Today FM’s KC show for his song ‘What a Woman Can Do’.
Songs on the forthcoming album are about everything from state and church corruption to the old chestnuts of love, loss, life and even murder! The music is influenced by classic artists like Bowie, Dylan, Springsteen, Young, The Clash, and more contemporary acts like Arcade Fire, The National, Elbow, Radiohead and James to name a few.
Over the years he has shared the stage with a number of major artists, supporting acts like The Waterboys, Mundy, Bell X-1, Damien Dempsey, Duke Special, The Blizzards, The Coronas, Luka Bloom, Gerry Fish, Dirty Epics, Aslan and Something Happens to name a few. With the release of his debut album shortly he hopes to take the next step up on the bill!
The Contemporary Music Centre and the Irish Composers’ Collective have joined forces to present a Night of New Music in the Kevin Barry Room of the National Concert Hall on 23 February and 30 March 2011. Each night begins with The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon series, followed by the Irish Composers’ Collective monthly concert, with a special offer on wine and tapas in the National Concert Hall during the break.
The Contemporary Music Centre’s new music::new Ireland salon, 6pm – 7pm, 23 February is entitled Ich ruf’ zu Dir and curated by Ergodos, a music production company and record label. It features Cora Venus Lunny (violin), Kate Ellis (cello), David Bremner (piano), Michelle O'Rourke (mezzo-soprano) performing works by Irish composers, Benedict Schlepper Connolly, Garrett Scholdice and Jonathan Nangle.
The new music::new Ireland salon series aims to encourage newcomers and enthusiasts alike to engage with the music of Irish Composers. Each performance takes place in an informal atmosphere with dialogue encouraged between composers, performers and audience. This is the Centre’s eighth series and this year to celebrate 25 years of the Contemporary Music Centre and as part of a series of events planned for 2011, the salons will take place across the year on the last Wednesday of each month, apart from the summer months. (June, July and August)
The Irish Composers’ Collective concert, 830pm – 930pm, 23 February 2011, begins with a pre-concert talk at 8pm. It features soprano Elizabeth Hilliard and cellist Kate Ellis performing works by Irish composers Alyson Barber, Joanna Heraty, Gráinne Mulvey, Natasa Paterson, Dylan Rynhart and Matthew Whiteside.
The Irish Composers’ Collective, founded in 2003, is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing Irish composers with a community for information, education and the pooling of resources in order to create concerts of their music with professional musicians.

The Link Project presents S E N S O R I U M, a weeklong, multidisciplinary music festival curated by Judith Ring, Angie Atmadjaja and Emily Kalies. The festival will showcase and promote music in innovative curatorial arrangements encompassing works including contemporary music, improvisation, electronic music, electro-acoustic music, audio-visual works, music and dance, and physical theatre.
The Cube space will be configured in a variety of different ways throughout the week. The creative use of the performance space for the main events on Friday and Saturday will allow the flow of the programme to move from one piece to another without interruption by defining multiple areas within the space. We wish to invite the audience to be more active and stimulated during the events by altering their position and point of view throughout the evening.
During the week there will be various workshops, talks, mini-concerts, improv sessions and two main concerts on the Friday and Saturday nights.
Artists featured include Irish and international composers Angie Atmadjaja, Enda Bates, Linda Buckley, Jane Cassidy, Donnacha Dennehy, Roger Doyle, Alex Harker, George Higgs, Laura Hyland, Emily Kalies, Jonathan Nangle, Judith Ring, Garrett Sholdice, Jürgen Simpson and Radek Rudnicki, with works performed by musicians such as Enrico Bertelli (percussion), Joe Browning (shakuhachi), Kate Ellis (cello), Suzanne Fatta (voice), Michelle O’Rourke (voice), Matt Postle (trumpet), Malachy Robinson (double bass) and Simon Roth (percussion) among others.

A series of music events are scheduled to take place in Tralee this coming May to celebrate the life and music of iconic songwriter and performer – Christie Hennessy. A full programme of events will be announced in the coming weeks. As part of the exciting programme we are launching the Christie Hennessy Song Competition. Details on how to enter are outlined below.
About Christie Hennessy
Christie was born in Tralee, County Kerry; he was the youngest of 9 children. There was always music in the house. His father played jazz on the accordian, his mother, a great storyteller, sang traditional Irish songs. Neighbours and family members, including Henry Curtin who played drums (Frank Sinatra's drummer), would join in the regular sessions of music and song. (Happy Days)
From these early memories, Christie's influences ranged from Elvis, Al Johnson, Bill Haley, Fats Domino, Robert Johnson and Mississippi John Hurt to The Beatles and all musicals.
Christie left school at 11½ (the ½ he said was important). At 15 he went to work on building sites in London by day and played in the R&B clubs by night. Christie was 23 when he wrote his first song.
Christie released his first album "Christie Hennessy" (also known as "The Green Album") in 1972, "The Rehearsal" 1992 (triple platinum), "A Year In The Life" 1993 (quadruple platinum), "Lord of Your Eyes" 1994 (triple platinum), "The Box" 1996 (triple platinum), "This Is As Far As I Go" 1999 (double platinum), "The Definitive Christie Hennessy" 2003, "Stories For Sale" 2005, "The Platinum Collection" 2007.
Christie was discovered by the late John Peel.
Christie composed the theme tune and incidental music for the BBC TV series "Get Well Soon" written by Ray Galton ("Steptoe & Son") and composed and wrote a musical/feature film about his native Ireland "Two Stops to Paradise".
As well as writing Christie produced two of his own albums with Steve Nye, "The Box" and "This Is As Far As I Go". He solo produced Aled Jones' album "Whenever God Shines His Light".

Christie was the Patron to the Irish charity "Children in Crossfire". His special focus was on the schools literacy programmes, as Christie was unable to read or write himself due to his childhoold years spent roaming the countryside rather than attending school. He suffered from severe dyslexia which was not picked up at school.
Following a trip to Kenya with the charity in 2006 and after spending time in the different villages with the children, Christie wrote a song "A Price For Love". He thought it was very important that the lyrics came from what the children would say to us all if they could. All royalties from this single are being donated to the charity in perpetuity. RULES OF ENTRY
1.The lyrics and music must be the original work of the songwriter (s).
2.The contest is open to all types of song, in any style – ballad, country, pop, rock etc.
3.Songs may be entered in either the English or Irish language.
4.The Contest is open to national and international songwriters.
5.Songwriters may only enter one song for consideration.
6.Entries will not be returned – all songwriters should retain a copy of their song submission.
7.All entries must be submitted on a CD and must be accompanied by a copy of the lyrics; typed or clearly written.
8.A commercial recording of the entry must not be released for sale before Saturday 21st May 2011.
9.Finalists will be notified by May 1st 2011.
10.The provisional adjudication will be on the basis of the CDs submitted, from which 10 finalists will be chosen.
11.Each of the 10 finalists will be invited to take part in a live concert in Tralee on Saturday 21st May 2011. Backing tracks are not permitted for this performance.
12.Each songwriter will be responsible for providing the singer and/or group for his/her entry in the final at his/her own expense.
13.A first prize of €1,000 will be presented to the winning songwriter on the night of the final.
14.Final adjudication will be on the night of the final. Decisions of the adjudication panel will be final.
15.Entry for the contest implies acceptance of all the rules.
