Known for their unrelenting tours that have seen them play over 300 gigs since the start of 2009, Belfast’s And So I Watch You From Afar (ASIWYFA to their fans) don’t know how to take a break. From appearances at SXSW, Eurosonic, Electric Picnic, Novarock, Canadian Music Fest, Popkomm, Pukkelpop, Sonisphere, to tour dates in Europe, North America, Russia and a support slot for rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, the instrumental band have been on the road playing music non-stop since the release of their fan-stirring debut self-titled album.
In between, the band were nominated for a Choice Music Prize for Irish Album Of The Year and XFM’s New Music Album Of The Year, released The Letters EP in February 2010 and a stop-gap tour single ‘Straight Through The Sun’ in November 2010.

CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers) has announced the main programme topics and speakers for the third World Copyright Summit – 7 & 8 June 2011, Brussels. World famous creators, rights organisations, music and books publishers, TV and film producers, policy makers, media and content providers, ISPs and telecom operators, hardware manufacturers, legal and technology experts, will meet to exchange ideas and debate about the future of intellectual property and creative content (music, books, movies, pictures,…) in the digital environment.

Robin Gibb will be joined at the World Copyright Summit by such creators as world renowned French visual artist Hervé Di Rosa, classical music composer and President of Croatia Ivo Josipović, US composer, songwriter and actor Paul Williams, and British poetess Wendy Cope.
The Summit will feature key political leaders, who are deeply involved in copyright issues such as Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services; Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner for Digital Agenda; and Francis Gurry, solicitor, Law professor and WIPO Director General, also co-author of “International Intellectual Property in an Integrated World Economy”.
Key industry speakers also include Roger Faxon, CEO of EMI Group; Arnaud Nourry, Chairman and CEO of Hachette Livre; Frances Moore, President/CEO of IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry); Simon Juden, Head of Public Policy at Pearson and former President of the UK’s Publishers Association; and Christopher Marcich, President and Managing Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa of the MPA (Motion Pictures Association).
A line-up of more than 100 speakers will emphasise the need for constructive dialogue on the importance of copyright protection and the distribution of creative works in the digital era.
While the capacity to access content now seems endless and, from a consumer’s perspective, almost at no cost, where and how can value be extracted from the usage and dissemination of content? What are the models that will deliver significant value and remuneration for rights owners? Is the answer in the ‘Cloud’? What are the best systems to ensure that rights owners are properly compensated? What is the role of ISPs? And where do creators fit into this new eco-system? The Summit will be the ideal platform to discuss all these issues in a forward-thinking way with all the stakeholders.
Expect views from a wide variety of perspectives, especially those of creators, due to the nature of CISAC’s membership, which includes authors’ societies and guilds active in all creative fields – music, audio-visual, literary, and visual arts.
With digital disruption now spreading well beyond the music sector into other creative fields, this topic will be a primary area of focus for the high level speakers from all artistic disciplines.
Taking place in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, the 2011 Summit will have a strong European flavour. Very important pieces of legislation and changes in the fields of copyright, collective licensing and the digital economy are currently being discussed in Brussels and at the global level.

“The voices of creators are seldom heard on copyright issues in the digital age, their participation is what makes the World Copyright Summit a unique event,” said CISAC President Robin Gibb, singer and songwriter of the legendary Bee Gees. “In Europe at least, the system of collective rights management is at a crossroads. The way forward for the collective rights management and creative industries as a whole will not come from seizing upon short-term commercial advantage, but from allowing the development of a system that is sustainable because it is fair to all.”
“The new digital economy would not exist without the works of creators; the future is based on the right balance between creators’ and users’ rights. This is what we mean with our “Create – Connect – Respect” tagline for this 2011 Summit,” commented Robert Hooijer, Interim Director General of CISAC.
“It is essential that the creative industries adapt to the reality of digital technology and the Internet. Legal and business mechanisms for creating value must align with the expectations of actors in the digital environment,” stated WIPO Director General Francis Gurry, who added: “We need to be creative about different industries, and to analyze the different value chains of production so as to ensure that those involved in authoring and marketing content are adequately remunerated and sustained.”

After months of hints and rumours we can now confirm that one of the summer’s most highly anticipated blockbuster movies, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” will features original music by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Rod and Gab.
The score for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 brings together one of the most respected and sought-after composers (an Academy Award winner with a further eight additional Oscar nominations for films such as Gladiator, Inception, The Dark Knight, Batman Begins to name but a few) and the premier guitar playing duo in the world – Rodrigo Y Gabriela.
Speaking on the creative process Zimmer recently said, 'The way we’re working, the three of us are sitting in a room, I play average keyboards and they play brilliant guitars and we’re writing cues together. There’s a force, a ferocity, about their sound.'

Professor Jane Edwards joined the Irish World Academy in 1999 after 7 years leading the music therapy programme at the University of Queensland. Australia. She is Director for the Music & Health Research Group, founded to bring together researchers from Ireland, Germany and Norway in collaborative research about the arts in healthcare. Jane is an experienced clinician, researcher and teacher, with specialist expertise in music in medical contexts, and music therapy in family centred care. She is the President of the International Association for Music & Medicine (www.iammonline.com). In 2011 she is convening a summer school "Qualitative methods in healthcare research" at UL funded by IRCHSS and in collaboration with colleagues from NUIG, and UL faculty from Occupational Therapy and Sociology.
Tríona McCaffrey is a graduate of the MA in Music Therapy Programme at the Irish World Academy and has worked as a music therapy practitioner in mental health for four years having established a full-time position in Mayo Mental Health Services. She has worked in the areas of Recovery, community mental health and Psychiatry of Old Age and is particularly interested in service users experience of mental health services in Ireland. Tríona currently lectures on the MA Music Therapy programme at the Academy.
Sue Baines, MMT, MTA is an internationally renowned Music Therapist who has worked in mental health and long term care for many years. She teaches in the Bachelor of Music Therapy program at Capilano College in North Vancouver, Canada and is a Fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery having trained at the Southeast Institute for Music Centred Psychotherapy in Atlanta, GA. Sue completed her Masters in Music Therapy from New York University and has published a number of articles in Music Therapy and other disciplinary publications. She has taught workshops and seminars across Canada as well as in the United States and South Africa.
Dr Dominic Fannon MD, MMSc, MRCPsych, MSc (CBT) Dr Fannon is a consultant general adult psychiatrist with a special interest in rehabilitation with the Recovery Team, Mayo Mental Health Service and visiting senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, London. He is Chair of Faculty of Social and Rehabilitation Psychiatry, College of Psychiatry of Ireland. He trained on the western region postgraduate training scheme and at the Maudsley Hospital. His special interests include psychological treatment of psychosis and early intervention.
Tommy Hayes completed a Master’s Degree in Music Therapy from the University of Limerick in 2002. He currently works as a Music Therapist in a variety of clinical settings in the area of special needs and mental health and has extensive experience of working with adolescents. He is in his final year of training as a ‘Guided Imagery & Music’ therapist with Professor Leslie Bunt. Tommy is also a renowned percussionist at the forefront of traditional Irish music for over 30 years, having performed and recorded with most of the great names in traditional music and beyond. He has released two solo albums “An Ras” and “A Room in the North” and has recorded music for a number of film and theatre productions with output numbers in excess of 400 albums.
This week sees the eagerly anticipated release of the new single from indie quintet Furlo. Your Entire Glows is another superbly crafted high-energy track from the Derry five piece in the same manner as their critically acclaimed EP’s Concussed Girls and Signature.
Since their formation in the summer of 2006, they have forged a path in the music scene via their first EP Concussed Girls. This self-release gained the band much respect from critics and press alike. 2010 saw the release of their 2nd EP Signature which received airplay support from BBC Radio and local stations alike. The band finished the year off by signing with Belfast Indie Label Yogen Records.
2011 promises to be a busy year for Furlo with the release of their debut single Your Entire Glows in February and working hard towards the completion of their debut album only to come up for air playing select shows and festivals in the UK & Ireland.

The winner of the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year 2010 will be selected on the night by the judging panel at the Choice Music Prize Live Event at Vicar Street, Dublin on Thursday March 3.
The winning act will receive €10,000, a prize fund which has been provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) and the Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA).
All of the shortlisted acts will receive a specially-commissioned award, courtesy of the
Recorded Artists Actors & Performers Ltd (RAAP).
All of the shortlisted albums are available through retail partners HMV in their stores nationwide with the exception of The Cast Of Cheers album which is only available via download.

Kildare singer/songwriter Valentine Black has no fear of his latest single, ‘Take me to your leader’, being used in any of the current election campaigns!
It’s a protest song for the 21st century, channelling the anger felt by people with the Irish establishment. However, rather than a 17 verse lament, he gets to the point in a three minute pop-rock song. The lyrics may make you think but the chorus will make you hum along!

Valentine Black is the alter ego of Kildare musician Peco Mc Loughlin. Having fronted a number of bands, most recently indie-rockers Bright Light Fiasco who enjoyed success with two top 40 singles, Peco decided to go solo in late 2008. He’s been writing songs since and is currently recording his debut album, due for release in Summer 2011. The lead single from the album, ‘Retrospect’, was released in October 2010 with some glowing reviews and his new politically charged single, ‘Take me to your leader’, is due for release in March 2011.
He has already created quite a bit of interest making the heats of The JD Set in 2009, being selected in May 2010 for youngrebel.co.uk's international playlist and playing the live heats for Phantom FM’s ‘Next Becks Thing’ in August 2010. He has recently performed a number of well received showcases at Indie Week Canada in October 2010. And only this month has been selected as a ‘Youtube Superstar’ on Today FM’s KC show for his song ‘What a Woman Can Do’.
Songs on the forthcoming album are about everything from state and church corruption to the old chestnuts of love, loss, life and even murder! The music is influenced by classic artists like Bowie, Dylan, Springsteen, Young, The Clash, and more contemporary acts like Arcade Fire, The National, Elbow, Radiohead and James to name a few.
Over the years he has shared the stage with a number of major artists, supporting acts like The Waterboys, Mundy, Bell X-1, Damien Dempsey, Duke Special, The Blizzards, The Coronas, Luka Bloom, Gerry Fish, Dirty Epics, Aslan and Something Happens to name a few. With the release of his debut album shortly he hopes to take the next step up on the bill!
