Liz Madden Literally Brings The House Down!!!

Irish artist Liz Madden, now based in New Mexico, literally ‘brought the house down’ at the world famous Albuquerque Folk Festival on liz maddenSaturday 7th June. The album is being produced by Billy Sherwood and Tony Kaye of YES fame.

Songs From The Youth 2014 In Association with IMRO

Songs from the youth is a new music movement that challenges youths to write an original song and enter a song writing competition.

In association with IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation) Craftzone is offering secondary schools and youth groups the opportunity to take part in this unique and exciting music challenge.

In a one-day song-writing workshop CraftZone will guide students through the process of writing and recording an original song. Students will explore writing lyrics, composition, production skills and music technology while being offered the opportunity to transform the classroom into a state of the art mobile recording studio.

The competition is also open to both bands and solo artists between the age of 11 and 18. Submit your original song and be in with a chance of winning recording time in Temple Lane Recording Studios.

Once your song is entered into the competition you automatically take part in an array of award categories. An online public vote will determine the top songs along with industry professionals. The top two songs from each region, which receive the most votes, will be invited to compete at the Songs From the Youth music awards later this year.

This is a great opportunity to present and showcase your music to the public. If you would like more information or would like to enter the competition visit http://www.craftzone.ie/ or call 0879628870.

From writing hits for other artists to recording her own, twice Grammy-nominated Beth Nielsen Chapman, Nashville based singer-songwriter has truly embraced musical diversity. A breast cancer survivor, environmental activist, teacher of workshops and lecturer on the magic of creativity, she’s penned numerous hits and written songs for many top artists including Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Bette Midler, Elton John, Neil Diamond, Trisha Yearwood, Martina McBride, Michael McDonald, Amy Grant, Keb Mo’, Roberta Flack, Waylon Jennings, Faith Hill, Willie Nelson, Bette Lavette, and many more. Her music has been heard on ER, Dawson’s Creek, Providence, Felicity and in movie soundtracks, including “The Prince of Egypt”, “Message In A Bottle”, “The Rookie”, “Where The Heart Is” and “Practical Magic”. Mega-hit “This Kiss”, ASCAP’S 1999 Song Of The Year, sung by Faith Hill garnered her a Grammy nomination. She was Nashville NAMMY’S 1999 Songwriter of the Year.

A renowned writer of many hits for other artists as well as herself, Beth Nielsen Chapman is in demand as a songwriting teacher and creative coach, having taught at such schools as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and Berklee School of Music in Boston, and numerous festivals and venues internationally.

Beth presents her unique and inspiring style of teaching in much the same way she approaches writing itself. For any writer in need of a boost of creative energy, this journey into the workings of the creative flow will cover some great tips and advice on how to step fully into your centre and find your voice, in writing and singing as well as keeping your balance in the performance of your songs.

Play and even chaos can be fertile ground for inspiration and students learn some great tips on how to find a point of leaping off into the “good old unknown” as Chapman would put it. Teaching the dance of balancing between spontaneity and analysis, Beth puts a strong emphasis on the rewriting and editing process, so essential in developing a finished product from raw creative fodder to the best song possible. She addresses how to work with fear and blocks and how to protect and nurture your creative health in the midst of juggling the demands and disappointments of the music business.

As part of the workshop, some participants will get feedback on their songs and advice on how to take it to the next level. Recordings can be played for a song critique but if you are singer-songwriter, performing live can also provide an opportunity for constructive feedback from Beth on how to maximise the presentation of your performance. A guitar or keyboard will be provided. If you prefer to play a recorded version of the song, sound will be provided.

Authors’ Council “Writers and Directors Worldwide” Relaunches and Calls for a Unified Voice on Creators’ Rights

Fair Remuneration for Audiovisual, Dramatic and Literary Creators Ensures Their Vital Contribution to the World’s Economy and Culture.writers&directors

The newly relaunched “Writers and Directors Worldwide” authors’ council has called for a simplified debate on creators’ rights as latest reports put the economic contribution of the creative sector at record levels. The group that dates back to 1966 and was previously known as the International Council of Dramatic, Literary and Audiovisual Creators (CIADLV) has streamlined both its name and message.

The authors in these repertoires entertain millions across the world by creating films, TV series, books or theatre plays and simply need to receive a fair remuneration for their work:” said Yves Nilly, French author, screenwriter and newly re-appointed chair of Writers and Directors Worldwide. “Unfortunately, the reality is that the overwhelming majority of creators in this sector — individuals, often self-employed — cannot make a living from being an author. Authors’ rights are the key; without it they have to find other jobs and their creative contribution to culture, diversity and the economy is lost.”

This contribution takes two equally significant forms. In economic terms, the work done by writers and directors is usually the first step in launching productions that the British Film Institute for example, estimates has contributed over €5 billion last year to the UK economy alone. The second contribution is to the world’s culture, described in the recent United Nations Creative Economy Report as “both a driver and an enabler of human and sustainable development”.

The next generation of creators, those struggling to launch new projects today, especially need to be supported. The nature of writers and directors’ work also often encompasses long, single and sometimes speculative projects with the flow of income neither constant nor assured. “The only way to maintain a sustainable creative industry is to guarantee a fair remuneration to authors for every use and re-use of their back catalogue,” said Nilly.

Writers and Directors Worldwide has a full agenda for the coming months beginning with a new international action plan to support the struggle of directors and screenwriters for recognition in national copyright laws of fair remuneration rights for every use of their work. It will liaise with authors’ unions in countries such as Colombia, Brazil, India or China to share best practice and provide support in protecting rights in these fast growing regions.
