Revolution Above Disorder Release ‘Annihilator’

Revolution Above Disorder is the solo moniker of Vancouver-based Dubliner Stephen Nicholas White (The Orange Kyte, House of Dolls, Magic Shoppe), whose music is a melting pot of shoegaze, psychedelic rock and electronic-tinged post-punk. Droned-out while also melodic and sincere, White’s songs are augmented by synths, drum machines and heavily treated instrumentation with hypnotic reverb-soaked vocals.

“As a record producer and remixer, Jagz Kooner has worked with an extensive list of some of the most influential musicians of the last 30 years. Alongside Andrew Weatherall, he was a member of The Sabres of Paradise. Jagz is somebody whose work has been an inspiration to me for as long as I can remember and he has pulled out all the stops for his remix of Annihilator… it is both dreamy and vicious in equal measures. It’s an absolute honour and privilege to have Jagz on board for this release,” says Stephen Nicholas White.

“Track 3 is the remix from my pal Colm Rutledge AKA Noise Baby. A fellow Dubliner and a fellow expat, Colm is based out of Berlin and the influence of that Mecca of hedonism is all over his Annihilator remix, the result is glorious. My jaw hit the floor when he sent this interpretation of the track. Colm is also currently knee-deep in creating a killer new record with his excellent rock n’ roll outfit The Famous Painters.”

Recorded during the height of the paranoid and chaotic days of the Covid-19 pandemic, it explores the themes of dissatisfaction, disillusion, nihilism and self-destruction – quite fitting for the times.

“Annihilator was originally conceived of as an uptempo post-punk song a number of years back when writing the second House of Dolls record, which ultimately never saw the light of day. Rediscovered in a treasure trove of demos back in 2020 as I was conceptualizing Revolution Above Disorder, Annihilator soon metamorphosed into a whole different beast. Working again with Jason Corbett at Jacknife Sound, we slowed the track down to allow it to breathe and, in doing so, a whole new incarnation of the track began to crystallize”,” says Stephen Nicholas White.

“At the time I was heavily into rediscovering the sounds of first wave trip-hop and nineties UK big beat… and as ever, the ubiquitous spectre of krautrock loomed heavily at the forefront of my mind. These influences wormed their way into Annihilator as we focused on the building of subtle layers to create a rising tension over the course of the track. The song was built over top of a sci-fi synth bassline, underpinned at its core by acoustic guitar. ACTORS’ drummer Adam Fink responded to the call and nailed the drum track. Mat Durie was summoned in to add some bowed-guitar, lending the track the droned-out atmospherics that it was crying out for.”

This spring, White released ‘Scream Quietly’ to pay tribute to the groundbreaking band Television Personalities and the songwriting genius of Dan Treacy. In late 2021, Revolution Above Disorder debuted with ‘Illuminate’, which involved all members of postpunk band ACTORS, as well as Josiah Webb of Magic Shoppe.

The ‘Annihilator’ single is out now everywhere, including Apple MusicSpotify and directly from the artist via Bandcamp. Other platforms are also available here.

New Single from Paul Casey ‘How Come?’

Paul Casey has just released his most honest and heartfelt song in years.

After watching news of the tragic school shooting in Texas, Casey felt compelled to write and record ‘How Come?’

“It’s a poem, a stream of consciousness, I’m just asking ‘how is this possible?'” says the Derry man from his home studio. “The world is definitely a different place, I feel like there’s no middle ground anymore. As a father it’s a constant worry”.

Paul Casey has found a new voice. ‘How Come?’ is a change in direction for the musician known for his lavish, blues guitar riff-driven songs. The new offering is a more stripped back composition with a spoken word delivery echoing the late recordings of Leonard Cohen.

‘How Come?’ is released on Friday, June 3rd.

Peter Richardson Set to Release Debut EP ‘Then and Now’ on June 10th

Peter Richardson is a 23-year old singer/songwriter from Dublin. An avid songwriter since the age of 15, Peter grew up surrounded by music. After testing the waters with his original songs at a college open mic, Peter began properly recording his music at home in the summer of 2020. A few months later in October he released his debut single, “The End of The World”, an indie folk ballad filled with choral vocals and stirring, apocalyptic lyrics and instrumentation.

Peter’s dramatic acoustic sound draws from a wide range of influences, drawing on the poeticism and varied sounds of artists such as Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Hozier, Lorde and Ben Howard among countless others. Peter also draws influence from great Irish folk singer/songwriters, such as Paul Brady and Declan O’Rourke.

Peter’s second single, “Please Don’t Believe Me” released in March of 2021, and further expanded his ambitious home-crafted sound. The “Gripping sophomore track” (Hot Press) was featured on RTÉ Radio 1 and Hot Press’ “Track of The Day” upon release. Indie Buddie remarked the track “oozes passion, compelling melodies, and cinematic appeal”, describing it as “a refined display of contemporary pop marking Peter Richardson an artist to keep an eye on.” Since the release of “Please Don’t Believe Me”, Peter has been working on his debut EP, ‘Then & Now’, which will be releasing June 10th.

Working with Cork producer Cian Sweeney (1000 Beasts), Peter released the first single from the EP, ‘The Coast’ in February. Praised by Hot Press as “Gentle, soaring and full of nostalgic comfort”, the track received incredible support, and continues to build excitement for what’s to come – “it’ll be monumentally exciting to see where Peter Richardson goes next.” (Hot Press).

The second and final single from the EP, ‘Pray’ released on April 15th and reached support from HotPress, RTE 2XM, Second Wave Blog, IMRO, The Acoustic Yard, Golden Plec, KFM, Flirt FM, Shannonside FM, Dublin South FM, LMFM and many more.

With the release of Then & Now set for June 10th followed by his debut headline show upstairs at Whelan’s on June 12th, and his debut festival appearance at Kaleidoscope festival at the end of the month, this summer marks an exciting next step in the career of this emerging artist.

Villain is the central track of Peter Richardson’s debut EP, ‘Then & Now’. Brought to life by prolific Cork producer Cian Sweeney (1000 Beasts), ‘Villain’, is an ambitious, menacing departure from the largely acoustic, uplifting folk worlds of ‘Pray’ and ‘The Coast’. It is by far the biggest and boldest track on the EP, exploring a much darker, more brooding aspect of his sound which in stark contrast to his earlier works, is laced with an anger magnificently brought to bear through the lyricism and production.

The collapse of love is rarely black and white. Amongst the roiling wreck of broken love the world shrinks around us and we see only strongly defined certainties. The broken trust, the longing, the unrequited, perhaps unwanted love. It’s easier to see a cold-blooded killer- a cursed shade of the person we once loved, stripped of all goodness and humanity. We often unload our pain this way, contorting every idea we ever had of them because our hearts cannot take the reality that our love died. It is far more gentle on ourselves to believe it was purposefully killed by a cruel Villain, a monster.

Beautifully realized with haunting backing vocals and crushing emotion, this dramatic track serves as a cathartic release of pain and anger, with each cutting lyric and bold verse building to a final, emphatic conclusion.

‘Then & Now’ is the debut EP from Dublin singer-songwriter Peter Richardson. The ambitious four-track project boasts both a refinement of Peter’s folk-rooted sound, as well as bigger and bolder tracks such as Villain, beautifully realised and brought to life alongside producer Cian Sweeney (1000 Beasts).

Across the EP, the tracks describe the end and beginning of a journey, from a place of darkness to a place of light, from ‘Then’ to ‘Now’. Peter explored this idea both in subject matter and instrumentation, with the melancholic, dark opening two tracks drawing a dramatic contrast to the uplifting worlds of ‘Pray’ and ‘The Coast’. The bold, fully realized project is set to release on June 10th, shortly followed by Peter’s debut headline performance at Whelan’s on June 12th, marking an exciting next step for this emerging artist.

Apollo Monroe Set to Unleash New Single ‘Sweet Tooth’

Apollo Monroe is a queer electro-pop artist and songwriter based in Dublin. He is a graduate of BIMM Dublin, with both a BA in Vocals and Performance and an MA in Popular Music Practice and Research.

Monroe grew up in Donaghmede, Dublin, and had an enormous interest in video games and music growing up. During his childhood, it was a combination of The Sims Superstar and Gwen Stefani’s music video for “What You Waiting For” that made him aspire to be a Popstar, and through his love of music and Pop Culture, he found a love for fashion.

Monroe began writing songs as a teen and began vocal training at 15. Whilst he studied music in secondary school, it wasn’t until college did he find his footing in the industry. He studied vocal performance in BIMM Dublin and from that incited a synth-pop band that went by the name of Apollo 6. Monroe was the front-man and sole songwriter of the band, and whilst they gigged in known places such as the Tivoli, Drop Dead Twice, and Crowbar, it wasn’t until they broke up that Monroe began to record and release music.

In 2018, Monroe started listening to experimental pop artists such as SOPHIE, Charli XCX, A.G. Cook, and once Spotify curated the Hyperpop playlist they were introduced to a world of whacky, experimental pop that framed their solo music vision going forward.

He released soda pop, his experimental debut single which fellow queer pop artist Viscose produced, back in February of 2021, intending to innovate and push the boundaries within the Dublin music scene. This track was met with critical acclaim from a multitude of Irish music publications, including the likes of Hot Press Magazine and Nialler 9.

His follow-up singles included collaborations with English hyperpop-produced OLD PUP which resulted in placement on Apple Music and Spotify curated playlists such as Glitch and Hyperpop.

Sweet Tooth is an electro-pop track written by Apollo Monroe and produced by OLD PUP. The track combines influences of dance-pop, hyperpop, trap, and EDM. Thematically, the song is about being romantically aloof, where the protagonist has no intention of ever being tied down.

Monroe’s vision of the track’s production was that of a 90s boy band meets 2099 and wanted to incorporate attitude, backing vocals, and harmonies reminiscent of those bands and combine them with auto-tune and vocoders to give it a futuristic edge.

New Single from Brother Josh ‘Waves’ Out Today

Meath duo, Brother Josh release their sophomore single, ‘Waves’ today, June 2nd. Josh says of the track, “Waves was my first GarageBand (iPhone app) project, I was messing around with its keyboard and discovered some instruments I hadn’t heard of, like the erhu featured throughout the tune. It was initially recorded entirely on the phone with me singing through my headphone mic and I was shocked this was possible, of course we re-recorded it in a studio (Oblivion) and guitars, bass etc. were added in along with proper mics for vocals .

The collision of a number of key factors and the freedom afforded by the lockdowns inspired the Irish musician Josh Bass, aka as Brother Josh, to craft his own songs and sound, and the first creation off his post-lockdown  production line was a gritty original single called ‘Crawl Back’, which was released to critical acclaim back in February.

As Josh himself explains, “The absence of work made the lockdowns a difficult time for musicians. Apart from the lack of income, most felt cut adrift by the absence of that magical connection between musicians and fans in the live context.” Fortunately, Josh found an app called Garage Band which inspired him to find his songwriting voice. He then discovered he could lay down cool demos of his songs on his phone and upload the recordings for overhauling in a fully-equipped studio.

Josh’s equally musical cousin, Daz Bass joined the project before noted Bulgarian Yanko Genov helped pull it all together in the studio. The result is a string of intriguing tracks including the debut single ‘Crawl Back’ and the new single ‘Waves’

More positive reactions followed. Alan Corr of RTÉ Entertainment described ‘Crawl Back’ as “a vaudevillian waltz of doom” and Jackie Hayden of Hot Press said, ‘Crawl Back’ is where post-lockdown passion meets high-intensity drama. We need more if it.”

And more of it you shall have. Ladies and gentlemen… ‘Waves’!
