‘Her Song’, The New Single from Mongoose Singer Molly O’Mahony

Possessing of a “rich 80% dark chocolate” voice and an acute sensitivity for the emotive power of words, Molly O’Mahony’s song writing is raw and unabashed.

Today Molly shares ‘Her Song’, the third single from her upcoming debut album ‘The House of David’, arriving October 20th 2022.

Molly describes ‘Her Song’ as “A celebration, a bop, a monument, Dublin in the sun. It’s joyful, loud, hopeful & proud; queer as you like. A big, gay love song.”

Molly spent the past decade writing and performing with art-folk group Mongoose, who have been a fixture of the Irish music scene since their formation in 2012. The band have released two albums and two EPS in that time and have shared stages with the likes of Glen Hansard, Mary Coughlan, and Eddi Reader.

She returned to her family home to Ballydehob, West Cork, in March of last year. Against the backdrop of the unfolding pandemic, she began work on her debut solo collection. The first single ‘Remember to Be Brave’, was released in June 2021, followed by Brother Blue.

This album is ten years of Molly’s life distilled into ten songs. The title pertains to the house of her close friend David, which she lived in for most of her twenties in Dublin.

She says “It is the place that allowed me to live and grow as an artist in the city. It’s also the site of so many of the events, love affairs, and cock-ups, which inspired this collection of songs.

This album is a breathing monument to all the living, perishing and creating that the house afforded me the space to do, and my gracious offering for all that it has seen me through.”

Its creation was made possible by the kind support of over two hundred individual patrons, and The Arts Council of Ireland.

Molly O’Mahony’s debut album ‘The House of David’ will be released October 20th 2022.

See Molly perform live at the Clonakilty International Guitar Festival (9th – 18th September). Details at https://clonguitarfest.com/

Kynsy Announces Something To Do With Love EP, Shares New Track “Love of Your Life”

Today Dublin-based Kynsy announces her brand new EP Something To Do With Love. The five-track EP features the recently released tracks “New Year” and “Point of You” and will be released Wednesday 14th September.

To mark the announcement Kynsy shares brand new track “Love of Your Life”, a sweeping and resonant love song which is both sensual and sweet while peppering in distant squalls, glitchy sounds and a haunting, sweeping string section. In a joyous expression of love Kynsy shares a sentiment she might otherwise struggle to put into words in real life. Talking about the song she says, “Love of your Life is an expression of that feeling and thought process you go through when you first meet someone you really like. When you’re in the early stages of infatuation with them and you fantasise over what the two of you could possibly become in the future.”

The world of Kynsy is a colourful, weird place of harsh edges and soft storytelling, where unwavering authenticity reigns king and the building blocks are constantly shapeshifting around you. It is the world constructed by 24-year-old Ciara Lindsey, who is still constructing herself, throwing love songs and confrontational battlecries at the wall to see what sticks.

It began with the rising Dubliner’s debut EP Things That Don’t Exist released last year, a few months after she featured in the NME 100 who praised the EP as, “a masterclass of channelling angst into disarming indie for a new generation.” Her music also garnered praise from The Irish Times, The Quietus, DIY and Clash. BBC Radio 1 proved to be equally supportive with Jack Saunders, Annie Mac and Gemma Bradley all championing her and she was chosen as a BBC Introducing artist for Radio 1’s Big Weekend. But that four-track release still wasn’t enough – Kynsy is an endlessly prolific songwriter. Her mind has been thrumming with tunes for the last five years, and at this point she’s just itching to get them out.

Freedom has always been the most important thing, and with a forthcoming second EP you sense Kynsy fully embracing the confidence that comes with her ever-growing knowledge as a songwriter, producer and performer, presenting a boisterous collection of tracks without being constrained by genre, format, theme, or, well, anyone but herself. The new songs build on the swaggering wit of the first EP, the observational frustration with modern living now shapeshifting into something broader, grander, even stronger.

“Last time, I wasn’t brave enough to make it sound a bit rough at times. I want to keep the rawness”, Kynsy says. She was right to trust her gut on this one. The resulting EP stitches together a picture of love in all its vivid, beautiful, illogical and intoxicating forms by taking the listener through the journey of one person trying to break down each destabilising chapter of it. “It’s about emotion and the feeling of the music, as opposed to trying to say something really deep,” Kynsy says, calling the EP “direct” and “about pleasure and joy and confusion”.

The new EP was co-produced with Alt-J regular Charlie Andrew, who worked with Kynsy in Dalston’s Old Workshop, where Alt-J recorded so much of the weird, wondrous music which changed everything for them. “Every song I gave to Charlie, he was like, ‘How can we make this weirder?’” Kynsy says of their collaboration, something of a breath of fresh air to have her bedroom demos embraced, celebrated, re-amped and reinvigorated as opposed to disregarded as child’s play.

The thing about Kynsy, at this stage, is that it is all about playing. You couldn’t tell, by the complex, sharp sounds borne from a young, frantic mind now finally bursting to get out. But that’s what makes it such a privilege to be invited into this world for a minute: to walk around and look at the building blocks, the splashes of colour, the hints of past lives and learned mistakes, and the promise of a deliciously unpredictable future to come.

Susan O’Neill Announces New EP, Shares First Song & Video ‘Now You See It’

Multi-instrumentalist and award-winning Co. Clare songwriter Susan O’Neill has announced a new EP ‘Now You See It’ to be released September 14th, and today releases the title track as the first single from the 6 track offering.

Recorded between Los Angeles, Maine, Clare, and Wexford, during the spring of this year, the EP sees Susan working again with Tony Buchen – producer of ‘In The Game’, the 2021 collaboration record with Mick Flannery, Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Lake Street Dive), and her fellow bandmates, brothers Cillian Byrne and Lorcan Byrne.

‘Now You See It’, a startlingly beautiful track showcasing Susan’s inimitable vocals, was written whilst on the road with Mick Flannery in the US last year. Joining forces again with West Cork director Christopher Luke, who has made a heartwarming video to accompany the song.

On both song and video Susan said:

“Even if we lived to be 150 years old it would still just be a micro blip in the ripple of space. This song is looking from an in-between state of consciousness, neither dead nor alive anymore but someone that has lived, a mind looking at the world for what it is (and was) while on earth in the 21st century. It is fleeting and in constant decay which is part of the beauty. We endeavored to show a bit of that transitory nature in this video put together by Chris Luke. Hope you enjoy it.”

Currently on tour in North America, Susan is performing across multiple festival stages, as well as playing a handful of headline shows. Susan has just been announced as guest to James Vincent McMorrow on his Los Angeles show tonight, and today also announced as guest to Valerie June’s UK headline shows later next month.  Susan will make her solo NPR debut at Mountain Stage in Charleston, West Virginia, on August 21st.

‘In The Game’ saw Susan get a nomination for the Choice Music Prize and the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards’ Album of the Year, Female Folk Artist of the Year, and take home the Best Original Folk Track award for the collaborative song ‘Chain Reaction’. Susan was also shortlisted for the ‘Vanda and Young’ Award for her song ‘These are the Days’. The collaboration album ended up being the biggest selling Irish independent record for 2021.

In support of the new EP Susan has today also announced her biggest Irish Headline tour to date, full details below.

Contemporary Harpist BRÍDÍN Releases Second Single ‘Hideaway’ from her Forthcoming Debut Album

BRÍDÍN, West Co. Sligo native, carries on the tradition of Irish music into the fourth generation of her family. BRÍDÍN sings, plays the harp, flute and piano. BRÍDÍN’s musical talent emerged at a very early age. Over the years she has achieved many accolades for her musical ability. Her love of music led her to pursue a musical career, having studied music at University College Cork achieving a degree in Music and Irish and Masters in Music and Performance. BRÍDÍN’s recent performances include ‘The Late Late Show’, ‘The Tommy Tiernan Show’, ‘Ireland AM’, ‘Today with Maura and Daithí’, ‘Claire Byrne Live’, ‘The Mainstage’, ‘Extra.ie’ and national radio.

Over the past number of years, BRÍDÍN has developed her own style influenced by her natural surroundings and rooted in her background in traditional Irish music.  BRÍDÍN uses her loop and effect pedals to create her musical pieces. Her layered melodies on harp and voice blend beautifully with contrapuntal fiddle, keyboard, electric guitar and bass, woven together with pulsating drums.

BRÍDÍN grew up in a funeral home and is a full-time funeral director and embalmer at her dad’s funeral home and has always found from a young age she has been fascinated by life and death. ‘I’m fascinated by the constant flow of nature and the beginning and ending of life.’ This has helped her form a great appreciation of life and says she is so grateful for the people she has in her life and all the work unknowingly our bodies do to keep us alive.

Since becoming a full-time funeral director and embalmer, BRÍDÍN has also found that writing and playing music is a great healing process for the pain of people’s grief that she deals with on a daily basis. ‘In an unexpected way, I need one to have the other. Music is my love and emotional outlet and acts as my healer, while on the other hand, the funeral industry reminds me every day how lucky I am to be alive and to still have my loved ones with me. I think in general we need to appreciate the “little” things we have and come back to nature’.

‘This album is my best work yet, I’m so proud of every last note and the musicians who have joined me. I can feel a real honest journey throughout of grief and healing, and I hope it helps people as much as it’s helped me.’

BRÍDÍN’s second single and opening track from her debut album ‘Hideaway’ is out now.

With a similar theme to her first single ‘Empty Room’, it welcomes you into a state in which you find yourself when writing music in your safe space. Single notes strung on the harp open up the track, layered with beautiful broken chords on the harp. BRÍDÍN layers her soprano style, contrapuntal vocals which create a feeling that you’re entering her world of creativity, being both dramatic and heavenly.

She feels like she’s bringing you along with her on her creative writing process to her hideaway, which she refers to as her safe, creative space, hidden away from everyone where you can’t be seen or heard. The band then join in collectively when the lyrics ‘I slip away’ come in. The harp instrumental moves closely with the flow of the song, with close interaction with the electric guitar (Jake Curran) and fiddle (Clare Sands). The final section of the song is brought back to a simpler form, played out by the sharp rhythm of the harp, electric guitar and fiddle.

Her debut album ‘BRÍDÍN’ is out Tuesday 20th September.

Suzi Quatro Endorses Tommy Keye’s Chart-topping Trip Back to the 70s

The legendary Suzi Quatro has endorsed the new Tommy Keyes single, which bears her name, and which has soared to the top of the iTunes chart.

Veteran music journalist Jackie Hayden of Hot Press explains:  “Tommy had sent me this terrific track and I thought it would be interesting to see what the legend herself thought of it, so I reached out to her”.

Tommy takes up the story:  “She was straight back to say that she liked it and that it captured the feel of the sound of the seventies, and she thanked me for the tribute”.

Tommy says that his early dancing days were to the chart-topping sound of the early 1970s – the golden era of teenage dances – epitomised by  Slade, Wizzard, Elton John and of course Suzi Quatro herself.  For this tribute, pounding drums, crashing guitars, a driving rock’n’roll beat, a lively sax solo and great harmonies – inspired by the Chinn-Chapman chart-topping formula – were lovingly recreated for a track that may send you searching in the attic for those old platform heels and bell-bottoms.  Have a listen to the lyrics and you’ll find them packed with playful references to the hits of the day.

Suzi Quatro (Teenage Discos ’73) was released on 28 July and has gone straight to Number One in the overall iTunes chart. It’s the perfect sound for summer.  Check out the brilliant YouTube video created by the award-winning cinematographer Peter Salisbury.

This is the first single from the forthcoming album Storytime.   The previous album Radio Days yielded an amazing 9 singles, all of which got extensive airplay in Ireland and internationally.  It also produced 3 Number Ones on the iTunes singer-songwriter chart, Any Other World, The Emigrants’ Blues and Radio Days.

Of all the living things Announce Headline Show for The Workmans Club, Cellar

of all living things are a four-piece Dublin based band, formally known as Nicetry. Inspired by nostalgia and memories of youth, the sound is reminiscent of 90’s alternative music, with textured guitars complementing delicate female vocals. They will perform in The Workman’s Club Cellar on Friday, 2nd September 2022.

Following their debut EP ‘On Familiar Ground’, the new single ‘Mostly Timing’ was released on June 3rd with Any Other City Records. ‘Mostly Timing’ was written as part of the band’s recent approach towards a more organic and collaborative songwriting process.

“We had a quiet couple of months after our autumn tour last year and this was one of the first things that materialised when we got back in a room together. Once the song had a rough shape, we booked studio time with the very much loved Ber Quinn. We wanted to keep its initial feeling intact by working together in creating new textures while in the recording studio”.

Ahead of their headline show on the 2nd September, of all living things will be releasing another single ‘On Familiar Ground,  Accompanied by Familiar Faces’.

The IMRO Stage at INDIE22 | Lorraine Nash

The independent release of her debut EP Wildflower in 2020 saw stunning newcomer and multi-instrumentalist, Lorraine Nash, quickly become one of the most played female artists on Irish radio. Lorraine has spent the last year working with long-time collaborator Pat Herring Ahern on her debut album due out later in 2022.

Lorraine’s vocal emanates from a soulful place, somewhere between Tracy Chapman and Gillian Welch, and is perfectly suited to a musical palate that evokes Americana and folk tones. Often incorporating layered harmonies in her songs Lorraine draws inspiration from bands like The Staves and Fleet Foxes. Equally at home in Irish Trad, Lorraine’s original material brings a mix of musical styles to the table while ensuring that her own unique voice and élan comes through unmistakably. Lorraine is a talented multi-instrumentalist, often using a variety of instruments including piano, guitar, harp, flute and violin in her creative process to embody her songwriting with different influences and ambience.

Over the past year Lorraine has performed at high profile events such as Indiependence Presents: Autumn Air, The Ruby Sessions, and Breaking Sound UK. She has also performed in renowned venues such Cork Opera House, Triskel Arts Centre and St. Luke’s. Lorraine Nash was featured in the Irish Independent as One to Watch for 2022, with John Meagher drawing comparison between her and the likes of Lankum, John Francis Flynn and Ye Vagabonds.

Lorraine Nash takes to the IMRO Stage at Indiependence this weekend, and we found out what we can expect from her performance;

Is this your first time playing at INDIE?

Last year I played Indiependence presents Autumn Air which was the socially distanced version of the festival. I really enjoyed it but I’m looking forward to experiencing it at its fullest this time around!

When can people see you on the IMRO Stage?

I am playing the IMRO Stage at 5.15pm on Friday.

What should we expect?

Some mellow folk music to hopefully ease you into the weekend!

Which of the other acts are you hoping to catch live this weekend?

I am a big fan of Lyra so I’m definitely looking forward to her set. I’m also hoping to catch Daði Freyr’s set but I would be happy if I just got to hear them play Think About Things live.

What’s next for you?

I have a gig Sunday the 31st of July in Seachurch supporting John Blek and Paddy Dennehy. I’m also spending quite a bit of time in the studio at the moment so there is new music on the way very very soon!

Make sure to catch Lorraine Nash live at INDIE22, on Friday July 29th at 5:15pm on the IMRO Stage.

INDIE22 takes place in Mitchelstown on the Bank Holiday Weekend of July 29-31.

New Irish Chill/Pop artist Amoodi set to release debut track ‘Give You My Love’

Amoodi is the new solo project by Irish singer, songwriter and producer Michael Hopkins.
Michael has spent 20 years writing music and playing in bands including Planet Parade, Too Fools and Tropolis. More recently he has been focusing on writing and producing for fellow Irish singer and actor Slaney.

Michael has spent the last few years hibernating in his home studio working long hours everyday to improve his songwriting and production skills. He has built up a massive collection of work that is now ready to be released.

“I’ve written so much music over the years that I haven’t released and thought it would be such a shame to just leave all these songs on a dusty hard drive forever, so I decided to set up Amoodi and finally get them out to the world. Revisiting these songs has inspired me to rewrite and produce them to a whole new level I never thought possible at the time”

‘Give You My Love’ is the debut single by Amoodi and will be released July 29th.
