New Music from Dundalk Singer-Songwriter, Rosie Bell

ROSIE Front Cover 10242013 has been a busy year for Dundalk singer/ songwriter, Rosie Bell. Following on from the release of her EP ‘Back to Here’ early in 2013, Rosie has been working on some new material which sees her wander into uncharted territory. The challenge she finds in her work is to follow where the inspiration leads, even if the trip is a difficult one.  A particular song that she had spent a lot of time on was ‘Where do we go?’ which she co-wrote with Cormac Burns. It is a commentary on the devastating effects of austerity on families.  Rosie says of the process ‘It was a difficult song to write because all around me I was seeing people who were hurting. It was difficult to capture the essence of that in a 4 minute sound bite. I included my own children’s voices in the recording to show that the numbers on a spreadsheet affect real families.  I found that, until this song was out of my head, I wasn’t able to move on to anything else.

On a lighter note, her new single ‘Lately ‘, sees her team up once again with Simon Todd (a founder member of Morgan La Fay) with whom she co-wrote the ‘Back to Here’ EP. In September, Rosie took some time out to attend a song writing week hosted by the legendary Boo Hewerdine and award winning Scottish singer/songwriter Karine Polwart.  It was here that the new song came about. She says of the song, ‘It practically wrote itself. As Simon was playing the melody, the words were just flooding into my headKarine helped me with the transition from the verse to the chorus and sang in some beautiful harmonies’.  The actual track was recorded in a single take by Mark Freegard of Kyotis Studios who has worked with top artists such as ‘The Strypes’, ‘Eddi Reader’ and ‘Del Amitri’.

Originally intended as a demo cut, the song had such a great ‘feel’ they decided to leave it as it was. Rather than waiting to have enough material for a full album, Rosie chose to go ahead and release this song as it seemed somewhat keen to be ‘out there’. The accompanying video was filmed and produced by Kate at Crab Apple Videos in a matter of days. The video of ‘Lately’ can be viewed here.

‘Lately’ is available through iTunes and usual digital outlets.

Rosie is currently planning a song writers’ circle tour for February 2014 with Simon Todd, Cormac Burns and special guests. Before Christmas, though, you can catch Rosie and Cormac play at the following events:

Friday 29th November       Brand New Opry, The Secret Garden, Blackrock, Co. Louth

Thursday 5th December    Café Sessions, Chapter 1, Cavan

Saturday 7th December     The Wee Bar, Silverbridge, Co. Armagh

Friday 13th December       ‘An Original Christmas’ charity event, Iontas Theatre, Castleblayney

Jetplane Landing Announce Video For New Single ‘Beat Generation…Ha!’

JETPLANEJetplane Landing are from Derry, Northern Ireland. The band was formed in 1999 by Andrew Ferris (guitar/vocals) and Jamie Burchell (bass); later joined by lead guitarist, Cahir O’Doherty (ex-Fighting With Wire).   The second single to be taken from Jetplane Landing’s fourth studio album ‘Don’t Try’, “Beat Generation… Ha!” is a meditation on being an outsider, written (in part) from the perspective of the oft-overlooked writer Gregory Corso.

Jetplane state – “Who said creativity should ever come from anything less than rage, than from terror, than from isolation? Not us; not Corso; not others: “If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire.”

Drawing inspiration from ‘80s hardcore and associated with the British Post-Hardcore movement (see Hundred Reasons, Biffy Clyro, Million Dead, Reuben and Hell Is For Heroes) they released their debut album, ‘Zero for Conduct’ in 2001 and followed it up with ‘Once Like a Spark’ in 2003. Regarded as a scene-defining record, ‘Once Like A Spark’ propelled the band onto even larger stages and deeper into the hearts of fans of mathy, cerebral punk rock.  The band’s third album, ‘Backlash Cop’ [2007], incorporated funk and hip hop elements, inviting comparisons to political torchbearers Rage Against the Machine.

The band took a break from playing live in 2007 and returned to public view six years later with this new record ‘Don’t Try’ and new drummer Craig McKean (ex-Fighting With Wire). A taut, visceral art-rock affair ‘Don’t Try’ draws easiest comparison to the bands work on fan-favourite EP ‘Els Quatre Gats’ [2002] however offers elements from the band’s entire recorded output so far. “Beat Generation… Ha!” Is available digitally from December 2nd and features brand new track ‘Paco’ on its virtual flipside.
