Dave Flynn and the Clare Memory Orchestra seek female singer

Dave Flynn and the
238969f4-5ab4-43b1-9541-40e63c7f6f73Clare Memory Orchestra are giving one lucky female singer aged 18-30 the opportunity to sing the role of one of Brian Boru’s daughters in a new piece called “Mná Brian Boru”,  composed by the orchestra’s artistic director and composer, Dave Flynn with lyrics by Pádraic Ó’Beirn.

This piece has been commissioned by the Arts Office of Clare County Council to commemorate the Millenium of Brian Ború. It is an alternative take on Ireland’s legendary High King as told through the voices of the most important women in his life. It will be premiered in St. Flannan’s Cathedral in Killaloe on the 18th of October 2014.

A female lead is sought, who ideally has excellent Irish and skill in traditional Irish singing. The scheme is not suited to purely operatic voices, although it will be an advantage to have experience working with classical as well as traditional musicians. The successful candidate will sing a solo part with the orchestra. Professional payment for rehearsals and concert alongside travel expenses within Ireland and accommodation will be included.

Auditions for short-listed candidates will take place in Ennis, Clare on July 5th and in Dublin on July 6th before the orchestra’s principal conductor, Bjorn Bantock and artistic director, Dave Flynn. Venues for these auditions will be confirmed to short-listed candidates. For the successful candidate, rehearsals will take place with the orchestra in Killaloe from the 15th – 18th of October.

The deadline for applications is 27th June 2014.

Applications can be made through the website http://www.clarememoryorchestra.com/cmo-singers-scheme-application.html and should include video examples of your singing, preferably through video channels such as YouTube. Ideally submissions would include one piece in English and one in Irish, one fast and one slow.

About the Clare Memory Orchestra

The Clare Memory Orchestra, founded by composer Dave Flynn, is an innovative and uniquely Irish orchestral project. Flynn has created a distinctive new sound by mixing some of the leading traditional and classical musicians in Irish music. The orchestra gets its name from the fact that it is based in County Clare and that the musicians perform without sheet-music, unlike standard classical orchestras. Through its unique instrumentation and performance practices the CMO is the only such orchestra of its kind in the world.
The CMO premiered The Clare Concerto, also commissioned by the Arts Office of Clare County Council and composed by Dave Flynn, in Glor Ennis in November 2012. Since then, the CMO has been widely acclaimed for its electrifying performances with Artists in Association Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill and in August 1st 2014 members of the CMO will join Martin and Dennis and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for a momentous concert at the National Concert Hall.

In January 2014 the CMO expanded into vocal music during a concert in Moscow Catholic Cathedral to an audience of over 1000 people. CMO members Niamh Varian-Barry and EtainMcCooey were featured vocal soloists on this occasion as they will be for ‘Mná Brian Ború’ alongside the successful applicant to this scheme.

This is a marvellous opportunity for any singer to perform solo with this remarkable group of musicians in such beautiful surroundings as St. Flannan’s Cathedral in Killaloe.

June showcase at The Acoustic Yard announced

This month’s The Acoustic YardIMRO supported ‘The Acoustic Yard’ on Tuesday 24th of June offers up the sublime songwriting talent of Four Men and a Dog frontman Kevin Doherty, the amazing vocals of Kathleen Turner and the fabulous tunesmith Jimi Cullen. The monthly sessions offers a perfect blend of singer/songwriting under the intimate setting and glass roof of Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar.

Kevin Doherty, from Donegal, has recorded 5 albums with the hugely popular Four Men and a Dog and has appeared at many of the world’s major festivals and venues. Their performances and recordings include supreme examples of the playing of Irish traditional music and a mix of country, folk, blues and americana, including original songs by Kevin. Two of their albums were recorded at the studio of Levon Helm ‘The Band’ in Woodstock, New York.

Kevin has recorded 4 solo albums, ‘Strange Weather’, ‘Sweet Water’, ‘Telegraph’ and ‘Seeing Things’ as well as a limited edition EP called ‘Morocco’. He will be playing some new tracks especially for ‘The Acoustic Yard’ from his latest offering ‘Seeing Things’ a brilliantly constructed CD. Kevin is a true songwriter with lyrics and melodies immersed together in thought-provoking brilliance.

Kathleen Turner is a new name on the singer/songwriter scene and her latest EP release ‘Some Stories’ will surely catapult her into a household name. Coming from a good pedigree as sister of songwriter Juliet Turner, Kathleen has managed to blend contemporary melodies with a more traditional slant which is apparent in her fantastic song ‘Kenmare Bay’. As Juliet posted recently, “Sometimes I see Kathleen coming towards me and think “what am I doing over there?”
Now based in Limerick since 2006 the Tyrone-born singer is Education Outreach Officer with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and the key manager of their ‘Sing Out With Strings’ programme.

Jimi Cullen is currently touring his third CD ‘Life’, a wonderful collection of songs played with his amicable carefree sound. Jimi hails from Wexford and started out ten years ago playing in every nook and cranny. As one of the hardest working musicians, it finally paid off when his cover of The Cranberries classic ‘Zombie’ reached number two in the Irish iTunes chart last year.

Recently he was nominated for Best Male, Best Acoustic/alternative and Best Unsigned artist in the Music Review Unsigned awards. As a songwriter, Jimi has written some of the catchiest melodies around and he is a perfect addition to this month’s ‘The Acoustic Yard’.

Doors open 8.30pm and as usual IRISHTV will be there to film the event for future broadcast.

You can follow The Acoustic Yard on Facebook and Twitter.

STILLROOM to release debut album ‘Good To Be Alive’ on June 7th

June 7th sees the 10408957_10152098265305880_2638469805093088662_nrelease of much anticipated debut album “Good to Be Alive” by Dublin based Rock band STILLROOM. The album was recorded at Ashtown Studios under the watchful eye of Dermot Lambert, produced, engineered and mixed by Tommy O’ Sullivan and mastered by Aidan Foley [worked with U2, The Foo Fighters and Van Morrison]. The album features 11 captivating tracks, all written and co-produced by STILLROOM. The hard working band have also enlisted filmmaker Anthony White to create a promo trailer for the album and filming for the first video to accompany the single ‘Rock n Roll o.f.o.’ has recently been completed. STILLROOM premiered this single on Radio Nova to glowing reviews; “These guys are going places. STILLROOM are the real deal, take it from me!”– Pat Courtenay, Radio Nova.

In the summer of 2006, five friends boarded a flight to LA with a 3 track demo and a dream…. The result was gigs in The Roxy, The Whiskey-a-Go-Go and The Cat Club on the Sunset Strip, but more importantly this trip reaffirmed the bands passion, conviction and commitment to their chosen road.

Since then, STILLROOM have toured tirelessly around Ireland and Europe and have taken part in various festivals. Some of their many achievements include having one of their songs featured in a movie and beating off tough competition for selection in a Microsoft ad campaign.

STILLROOM released an EP which Hot Press described as “Rory Gallagher meets Bon Jovi meets Judas Priest” and last year released the double A-side single and videos for Christopher Cloud/Better Days, to great acclaim while heading over to London and Germany to continue gigging. They are certainly no novices to the Music Industry and look set to make a serious impact with this latest release. “Dublin rockers STILLROOM are finally releasing their debut album and it’s a face melter. It is good to be alive and rock is clearly alive and well in Dublin” – Krank.ie.

To support the album STILLROOM have announced a tour which kicks off in Dublin’s Sin é on June 7 and takes in such festivals such as the Court House Festival in Leixlip and the coveted You Bloom Festival.

STILLROOM will be preforming live in HMV/Xtra-Vision – Saturday June 7th @ 2pm HMV – Belgard Road, Tallaght (Album will be on Sale)

“A great album that would compliment any collection and can stand shoulder to shoulder with anything I have on my shelves! As a good friend once told me, you too should heed this..Get it on!” – PlanetMosh

You can follow STILLROOM on Facebook and Twitter.
