New Music from Gorgeous Wrecks ‘Army Of Regret’

Following on from the success of their 2nd single ‘Strong Suit’ – led in no small part by the brilliantly surreal video featuring the man with an orange for a head – the anonymous duo Gorgeous Wrecks release their 3rd single ‘Army Of Regret’ on September 24thThe last release before their debut album ‘Gentle Art Of Persuasion arrives in stores on October 22nd, ‘Army Of Regret’ is a head-bopping piece of acoustic driven synth pop, laden rock undertones and carried by the unique vocal talents of their (still) unnamed singer.

Described by one critic as a cross between The Blue Nile and The Jesus and Mary Chain, Gorgeous Wrecks formed in 2019; the duo combining their collective vision for a musical project that combined electronic atmospherics, a selection of vintage drum machines, a guitar, and one very unique voice. Soon after, they decamped to a studio in North Dublin with renowned Irish producer Ger McDonnell (U2, The Cure, Kasabian, Martha Wainwright), where, inspired by artists such as The Notwist, Portishead, PJ Harvey, Metronomy, TV on the Radio and New Order, they wrote and recorded their debut album ‘Gentle Art of Persuasion’.

New Sarah McQuaid Album The St Buryan Sessions Due In October

Born out of the pandemic and due for release on October 15, ‘The St Buryan Sessions will be the sixth solo album by award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Sarah McQuaid, and is her most powerful and emotive offering yet.

A six-week, 21-date UK tour marks the album’s launch, and Sarah’s 2022 tour plans include the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and USA.

I can’t wait to get back out on the road again,” Sarah enthuses. “Obviously I’m nervous about COVID, but I desperately miss performing to live audiences. The few gigs that I’ve managed to do this summer have been so, so lovely – every time I do a gig, it just brings home how much I’ve missed it.”

‘The St Buryan Sessions’ had its genesis in the spring of 2020, when Sarah’s gigs and tours were cancelled due to COVID-19. Thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, she was able to finance a live solo recording (sans audience) in the lovely medieval church of St Buryan, not far from her home in rural West Cornwall.

Conceived as a concert set and including such fan favourites as ‘In Derby Cathedral’, ‘The Sun Goes On Rising’ and ‘Yellowstone’, the album is a journey not only through a wide range of instrumentation and styles, but also through the spectrum of emotions that Sarah evokes in her performance and invokes in the listener.

Sensitively captured by her longtime sound engineer and manager, Martin Stansbury, with the aid of ambient microphones placed throughout the church, the sound of Sarah’s voice and music soars through the stunning acoustic space as she moves between acoustic guitar, piano, electric guitar and floor tom drum, performing songs that span her 24-year career – from ‘Charlie’s Gone Home’, originally recorded on her 1997 debut album ‘When Two Lovers Meet, to electric guitar based pieces from her most recent studio album ‘If We Dig Any Deeper It Could Get Dangerous’.

Two previously unrecorded covers feature on the album: the classic jazz standard ‘Autumn Leaves’, on which she demonstrates the full dynamic range of her lush, distinctive voice, and a cover of ‘Rabbit Hills’, written by her dear friend (and past producer), the late Michael Chapman.

This second piece was commissioned by Michael’s wife Andru as a gift for his 80th birthday and sees Sarah at the beautiful grand piano that resides in the church, her compelling, heartfelt delivery revealing the depth of her immersion in the rich imagery of Chapman’s evocative lyrics.

I was absolutely devastated by the news that Michael has left this world,” says Sarah. “He was a real musical mentor to me. I wouldn’t have ever started playing electric guitar if he hadn’t handed me his Ibanez Artist and said ‘Play this.’ My heart goes out to Andru – she and Michael have both been such good friends to me. I can’t express how sad it makes me to know that I won’t see him again.

The recording was filmed by Cornish filmmaker and director Mawgan Lewis of Purple Knif with the aid of Eden Sessions veteran camera operator John Crooks. The fruits of their work can be seen on Sarah’s YouTube channel – https://youtube.com/sarahmcquaid — where Lewis’ 9-minute documentary “The Making Of The St Buryan Sessions”, featuring interviews and song snippets, can also be viewed, along with a 59-second promo video about the album and tour.

‘The St Buryan Sessions’ is now available to pre-order via https://sarahmcquaid.bandcamp.com on CD and limited-edition blue vinyl double LP, together with T-shirts, tea towels, tote bags, ultra-limited-edition test pressings, and the full concert film on a 16GB engraved wooden USB stick, all bearing Sarah’s original artwork.

See https://sarahmcquaid.com/tour for details of all shows including addresses, start times etc.

Elaine Mai Releases ‘Go Slow (Feat Sinead White)’

One of Ireland’s most exciting artists Elaine Mai today announces that her much-anticipated debut album will be called ‘Home’ and will be released on Friday 8th October.

What’s more, on Friday 10th September she releases her new single ‘Go Slow (feat. Sinéad White)’, just a day before what promises to be her triumphant return to live music at Fall Right Into Place in Galway (11th September) and a week before the sold-out-in-two-minutes Mother Summer Block Party at Collins Barracks in Dublin (18th September). The single is the third to be taken from the acclaimed producer’s debut album, following the phenomenal success of January’s ‘No Forever (feat. MayKay)’ and June’s ‘Still Feel (feat. Ailbhe Reddy)’, and sees her continue to collaborate with some of Ireland’s top women vocalists.

‘Go Slow’ is a hopeful, nostalgic and comforting track that further weaves the theme of ‘Home’ that has given her debut album its title. Sinéad White’s chorus hook – ‘When you go, you go slow’ – grabs the listener and pulls them in, in a vulnerable, yet powerful way. Elaine Mai says: I loved this tune so much already, but when Sinéad added her vocal it became an instant favourite of mine. Sinéad is such an incredible artist, vocalist, and friend. We’ve played countless shows together at this stage and it’s always such a pleasure to work and spend time with her. I think you can hear the hope and excitement throughout her vocals on the track. That feeling of exhilaration at the beginning of something new.

Sinéad White is a singer-songwriter from Kildare, Ireland. She released her debut album in 2015 and went on to support acts such as Jess Glynne, Everlast from House of Pain and Television. Like Elaine, she is a long time collaborator of Irish electronic music producer, Daithí. She has also collaborated with L.A based rapper, Bishop Lamont. Sinéad White says: Elaine and I have known each other for a long time. We are both collaborators of the electronic music producer Daithí, so our friendship has grown over the years. When Elaine asked if I would be interested in collaborating on a song for her album, I was really honoured. Just because you are friends with someone doesn’t mean that you are automatically going to work with them. Her care and consideration as a friend translated into a deliberate and conscious handling of each element of her songs. Nothing is there ‘’just because’; everything has been carefully considered.”

Elaine Mai has long been synonymous with some of Ireland’s most exciting artists and musical moments. Her remix of Pillow Queens’ ‘Gay Girls’ was critically acclaimed, as was her remix of Loah’s song, ‘Nothing’. In 2017, The Irish Times wrote in their Electric Picnic report, “one of the tunes of the festival has to be Elaine Mai’s remix of Wicked Game.” Although collaboration remains a key component of Elaine’s music her upcoming debut certainly sees her stepping into the spotlight. Considered collaborations are perfectly matched with club tunes that will make listeners feel like they’re watching the sun go down behind the main stage at Sonar or Tomorrowland with tens of thousands of people. As we get closer to discovering what her debut album might sound like, Elaine says: “I’m really excited to release my album soon and for people to hear it in full. It’s been such a huge part of my life and it feels very satisfying to be at this point. These tracks mean a huge amount to me and I can’t wait to get back on stage (for the first time since 2019!) and play them live.”

Rushes Releases Debut Project ‘Glowchild’ & Single ‘Lost In Therapy’

Praised for his iridescent sound and style, alternative pop artist Rushes returns with his highly-anticipated first full-length project, the breathtaking ‘Glowchild’. Following the release of the first three singles, ‘Wide Eyed’, ‘Funds’ and ‘Blue Ghost’, the project is set for release on September 10th, accompanied by its lead single ‘Lost in Therapy’.

‘Glowchild’ is a beautifully sensitive story woven through a collection of 9 tracks. Throughout its runtime, it encapsulates a formative journey of struggle, fierce ambition, love, loss, and the clarity brought on by an eventual sense of self-awareness. Set to a backdrop of smooth, meticulous and sometimes hectic production, the melodies are soulful and sensual, with gorgeous harmonies permeating the tracks, making ‘Glowchild’’s sound unforgettable.

Having lived in Dublin for the past number of years, Rushes found himself moving back to his hometown of Skibbereen in West Cork following the beginning of the pandemic. What began as a period of uncertainty quickly flourished into a time of creative revival and experimentation, inspired by the connection he had with the world around him. “I fell back in love with Skibbereen and that was really therapeutic for me. I’m very proud to be from this side of the world”, Rushes notes.

Feelings of frustration are evident in tracks such as ‘Funds’ and ‘Reality Cheque’, while the likes of ‘Blue Ghost’ and ‘Violet Skies’ capture the unique sense of ecstasy that comes from the thrills of youth. ‘Space’, meanwhile, recalls the familiar final stages of a relationship as Rushes finds himself lost in the world, impatiently waiting for a break. ‘Feeling Like’, meanwhile, features the vocals of Rushes’s friend, collaborator and renowned artist Jafaris. The track follows a line of collaborations between Rushes and the Dublin rapper/artist, going all the way back to Still Water on Rushes’s debut ‘Glimpse’ EP in 2019. A reminder of all that’s gone before, ‘Feeling Like’ highlights the playfulness and joy that creating music together can bring, even in the darkest of times. As the compilation draws to the end, a sense of maturity and growth seeps through on tracks such as ‘Dimes’, and the project’s newest single ‘Lost in Therapy’, as Rushes comes to terms with all that has come before and accepts himself for the artist he has become.

I wrote ‘Lost in Therapy’ at my most vulnerable. I was going in and out of therapy sessions every week, shedding pieces from my life. I really lost sight of everything else around me and the people who cared for me. I kind of let them go, even when they were there to listen. I was lost”, Rushes explains of his new single. Sonically, the track is reminiscent of 60’s showband era Ireland, conjuring images of late night bars with no one’s minds fully focused on the music around them. There’s honesty there, it’s just reality and you’re accepting that. The production is large, but there’s no crazy thrills to it really. It’s still quite raw and is a really nice bed for the vocals to sit on. It took a few versions but we got it to the right place”, Rushes adds.“It’s the song I’m most proud of and the song I’m most fearful of putting out at the same time”, Rushes explains of ‘Lost in Therapy, “I recorded all my vocals alone. It’s kind of a therapeutic process, which I like to be by myself for”.

As a whole, ‘Glowchild’ combines infectious pop hooks with silky RnB melodies, as Rushes’s vocals soar high above in the oasis, full of the emotional breadth that comes with immense mental, creative and financial fatigue. The project gives a raw, unfiltered gaze inside the complexities of life as a young, extremely talented but struggling artist on the way up. With each track we find an artist steering all his hope and drive into his dream whilst simultaneously trying to manage the complications this introduces to other aspects of his life, including how he supports himself and how he relates to other people. Familiar feelings for all in their early 20’s, anchored in the most uncommon of times.

Previous singles, ‘Wide Eyed’, ‘Funds’ and ‘Blue Ghost’ have received media acclaim from publications such as CLASH, EARMILK, Dansende Beren and Enfnts Terribles, District Magazine, Hot Press, Nialler9, Goldenplec, Soul Doubt Magazine and The Last Mixtape. Rushes’ has also achieved copious Irish radio support with a total of 5.9 million impacts to date as well as ‘Funds’ reaching No.2 and staying in the Top 5 on the Irish Breaker’s chart for 5 weeks; the highest-ranked independent artist, behind industry big-hitters such as Gavin James. Additionally, on Spotify, Rushes’ has been added to editorial playlists such as New Music Friday UK, New Pop UK, Wholesome, A Breath of Fresh Éire and Chilled Pop Hits.

The project finds an artist at the peak of his powers, as Rushes gives us an insight into the kaleidoscopic mind of a creative in search of peace and serenity. ‘Glowchild’ marks the homecoming for an artist who, for the longest time, had forgotten what it meant to truly belong. It illustrates complex vulnerability, tenderness, and an unfiltered sense of brazen ambition, showcasing that anyone can be a glowchild. In fact, maybe it’s what we should strive to be.

‘Glowchild’ and ‘Lost in Therapy’ are released on September 10th on all digital platforms. The music video for ‘Lost in Therapy’ is scheduled for release on September 16th.

New Album from Mick Flannery & Susan O’Neill ‘In the Game’

The highly anticipated collaboration album ‘In the Game’, from Mick Flannery and Susan O’Neill is out today on CD, vinyl and digital.

In a first for Flannery, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed songwriters and singers, he and Irish newcomer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Susan O’Neill have come together on a collaboration album ‘ In the Game’.  The award-winning, double platinum selling artist has released six studio albums, three of which reached No. 1 status. His last offering in 2019 received high praise as his finest to date: ‘Mick Flannery has a voice for the ages, a complete Master of his craft’ cited by Clash Magazine, whilst The Sunday Times said he “conjures up exquisite story-telling’. ‘In the Game’ does not break this spell, as Mick continues to deliver stories never heard before. This time with a story-telling partner, by way of the unparalleled voice of Susan O’Neill.

Having wowed huge festival stages over the past few years moonlighting with Irish dance band ‘King Kong Company’ and accompanying the queen of traditional music Sharon Shannon on her international tours, Susan has now spent the last while honing her own craft.  Susan is a songwriter of hidden depths, a singer with a voice that is equal parts balm and blowtorch. She is audacity personified, a free spirit. A real performer.  As of now Ireland’s best kept secret, on the release of ‘In the Game’ this however is all about to change.

The album was written and recorded over the summer of 2020 during lockdown, between Cork and Los Angeles.  Produced ‘virtually’ by LA based, Australian producer Tony Buchen (Courtney Barnett, Smashing Pumpkins, Tim Finn), and featuring musicians from both Ireland and America.

The songs on ‘In the Game’ tell a sorry, salutary story: the likes of Are We Free? (‘Tell me when you’re ready to be never satisfied’), These Are the Days (‘It was better to learn a hard lesson and go, than to never try and never know’), Baby Talk (‘If real is in the feeling, baby, no one is a fake’), and the title track (‘Oh darling, what would have happened if only we’d had a good run’) offer up longing and redemption. The album as an entity seeps equal measures of seduction and sorrow, desire and despair, while the songs are delivered simplistically yet potently.

Brí Releases single ‘In My Head’ & Announces Debut Album

Irish indie pop artist Brí is releasing a stunning single and accompanying video for her new song ‘In My Head’ on September 9th and is also announcing her highly anticipated debut album ‘Hide’ will be released Oct 22nd.

Following on from her debut track, ‘Low Supply’, Offaly artist Brí sold-out her Whelan’s headline show, received high praise from a multitude of blogs and radio and was selected to perform at Beatvyne’s Music X Tech Experience. While 2020 saw performances at Whelan’s Ones to Watch, The Ruby Sessions, headliners in The Sound House, Spirit Store and festival line-up announcements such as Vantastival, 2021 has seen Brí building momentum for her anticipated debut album.

About her debut album, Brí says…”‘The theme of my debut album grew from my song ‘Hide’. I’ve always held other people’s opinions above my own and let fear hold me back both in music and in life. This album embodies the fallout and the resolutions that stemmed from this into many facets of my life. A loud theme that has been reinforced since the album’s inception; the entire process of making ‘Hide’ in itself, has forced me to trust my gut and to honour my vision. ‘..From now on I won’t hide.”

Her new single and video ‘In My Head’ continue Brí’s journey as one of the country’s most exciting artists. With each of her previous 5 releases Brí has gained more and more plaudits and more and more fans, as people appreciate a true original artist that mixes stellar song writing with fascinating visual accompaniments to bring the listener deeper into her world of self discovery and awakening that most can relate to.
