Declan O’ Rourke Announces Twelve Irish Live Dates in 2022

Today, Declan O’Rourke announces live shows to his tour schedule for 2022. Taking place across twelve venues from Sligo, Kilkenny, Tralee, Cork, Waterford, Dublin, Limerick, Galway, Portlaoise, Drogheda, Letterkenny and the final night will be in Castleblayney. Tickets for the upcoming dates will go on sale Thursday, 23rd September at 10am from venue box offices and Ticketmaster.

An artist known as a consummate performer who captivates audiences time and time again, whether commanding the stage alone with a guitar and a microphone, accompanied by a fifty piece orchestra, or surrounded by a band. Having performed extensively in the US, Europe and Australia, O’Rourke’s growing status is one of a significant global artist.

The most emotionally raw and affecting album of his career, Declan’s latest album ‘Arrivals was produced by Paul Weller. Recorded over six days at the Black Barn studio in Surrey, ‘Arrivals sees O’Rourke present his art in a different yet wholly distinctive manner. The sound is stripped back to Declan’s soulful and resonant voice, the virtuosic acoustic guitar playing for which he’s renowned and only the occasional sparse arrangement of strings and late-night drums bringing colour and light to the LP’s ten songs. Weller, a fan of Declan’s songwriting for some years, also adds his multi-instrumental abilities to the recordings, including a beautiful piano accompaniment to the closing track.

Proffering reassurance in the face of inevitable sorrowis what New York Times music writer Jon Pareles has said about Declan O’Rourke. Not many people would have thought that such praise would have so significant a purpose during a prolonged time of global turmoil, but – as his many admirers know only too well – O’Rourke has been spreading hope, love and emotional clarity for over fifteen years.

‘Arrivals’ deftly balances the personal and the political: The personal – it is assuredly his most emotive and intimate work to date – comes from O’Rourke’s admission that he has always been guided by family.

Alongside a vision of seeing the personal and political run in parallel and occasionally intersect on ‘Arrivals’, is the way in which textural layers have been stripped away.

‘The Pawnbroker’s Reward,’ O’Rourke’s forthcoming literary debut, has been announced for release 29 Oct 2021 on Gill books — A work of historical fiction, the much-anticipated novel comes in the wake of the artist’s widely acclaimed, award winning record ‘Chronicles Of The Great Irish Famine.

Charles Boulevard release new single “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”

Today sees the release of Charles Boulevard’s new single “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”. It’s the Czech/Irish trio’s second single since the release of their debut album “Rendez-Vous!” in November 2020.

The song follows an interesting concept in that it is a sequel to the song “Empty Streets” from the album. Whereas “Empty Streets” explores the ending of a momentous relationship from the eye of the storm, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” is a retrospective – looking back at those events from a different perspective years later. Lyricist Dermot explains “We wanted to explore the idea that sometimes events in our lives have far reaching and unexpected consequences. We can only see the significance of those events when we look back. But of course memory is a place we can only visit for a short time however much we would like to stay.”

The song title takes inspiration from the famous photo of a forlorn looking James Dean  walking through the New York rain with cigarette in mouth. A fitting image to convey the ethereal atmosphere of the song. Pavel’s strangely disarticulated guitar effects and Bernie P.B’s intoxicating drums help create that atmosphere. While the inarticulate outro vocal captures those primal emotions that are sometimes beyond language.

“Boulevard of Broken Dreams” is available on all digital platforms from today.

Ian Bermingham launches Old Sea Legs with ‘The Lucky Ones’

Crawling with vivid imagery and colourful characters, a timeless tangle of tongue-twisting, brain-burrowing lyrics that can swing from breathless barrage to lilting lament – at times without a moment’s notice – Old Sea Legs is more than just a nom de guerre for songwriterand performer Ian Bermingham; it’s a window into a world entirely of his own creation.

Best known for his time as frontman of Dublin quintet ‘The Eskies’ with whom he has previously toured extensively internationally including major festival performances at Glastonbury, Electric Picnic, Reeperbahn, Great Escape, Eurosonic, Montreux Jazz Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival (Australia).

Bermingham now seizes his moment to move into the next chapter of his creative journey with an expansive UK tour, coming noff the back of the release of his debut single ‘The Lucky Ones’ [released 17th September] and a sold out show at one of Dublin’s most beloved venues, Whelans of Wexford Street [19th September].

Displaying all of the storytelling nous and craft of the quintessential folk troubadour, the melodic ear of a pop pioneer and the lyrical largesse that has become so synonymous with Ian’s songwriting, ‘Old Sea Legs’ see’s the Dubliner push himself to new and exciting territory as a solo performer, with a sound that manages to be both expansive and intimate.

‘The Lucky Ones’ is the first ever solo offering of Ian Bermingham’s career and our first glimpse at what his new venture ‘Old Sea Legs’ might sound like. It is a timeless, driving, hook-laden, alt folk anthem, rich in melody and harmony that yearns to be raised high in rooms full of voices.

Striding atop a mix of electronic drum sounds and traditional percussion; the song swaps Bermingham’s now trademark vaudevillian theatrics for a tone altogether more bittersweet, and sees
the Dublin songwriter plough new furrows of emotion across 3 minutes and 45 seconds that manage to be both expansive and dynamic.

“For much of my journey as a songwriter, I have veered towards exploring my own feelings and experiences by telling stories through the eyes of other people; by donning fictional characters and
creating heightened versions of myself. I am drawn to stories of high drama, full of colourful characters from far away places but this song came through a lens far closer to home.

‘The Lucky Ones’ is about the journey that a person goes on when one or more of life’s cornerstones are knocked out from under them. It’s about the shock, the grief, the punch-drunk stupor
that you find yourself in after a lengthy, drawn-out stripping away of a support network. It’s about the trauma of suddenly having to adapt to an altered reality, the loss of a belief-structure and the
bleary-eyed, first steps into the next chapter that we all must take if we are to carry on, regardless of what has been lost.I am very excited to finally share it.”

‘The Lucky Ones’ is available on all good platforms.

NCH, The Arts Council and RTÉ present Portraits of Seán Ó Riada Parts I and II: 50th Anniversary Celebrations on September 25th

The National Concert Hall, The Arts Council and RTÉ will mark the 50th Anniversary of the death of Seán Ó Riada with two special concerts featuring RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Ceoltóirí Chualann, Seán’s son the renowned composer Peadar Ó Riada, acclaimed traditional singer Seán Ó Sé,  Seán Keane, Cormac Begley, Crash Ensemble, Stephen Rea and many more. The concerts, which celebrate the diversity and breadth of Ó Riada’s influence, are part of the NCH Autumn Season, Refractions. Both concerts will be live-streamed on nch.ie and rte.ie/culture and free to view. Highlights will be aired on RTÉ One on Saturday October 2nd and on RTÉ lyric fm on Sunday October 3rd.

Robert Read, CEO of the National Concert Hall said: “We are delighted to present these two special concerts with the Arts Council and RTÉ to honour the extraordinary legacy of Seán Ó Riada. Ó Riada shaped not only the evolution of the Irish musical tradition but also Ireland’s cultural life and our national identity. His work as a composer, musician and broadcaster is unparalleled. These two exceptional concerts featuring a gathering of acclaimed Irish artists pay homage to the innovative and poetic nature of his work. We would like to thank Davy, our Innovation Partner, and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media for their continued support.”

Speaking about the 50th Anniversary celebrations, Maureen Kennelly, Director of the Arts Council said: “The name Seán Ó Riada is synonymous with the development of Irish traditional music and in his short career he has left a remarkable legacy. His reimagining of our music has undoubtedly helped preserve the tradition and his contribution has shaped how we appreciate the traditional arts today. Ó Riada was Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre in the 1950s and it was during this time he created his seminal work Mise Éire, the vinyl recording of which could be found in nearly every household in Ireland.  His compositions and arrangements of orchestral music were lesser known to many and I am delighted that this concert, as part of the Tradition Now partnership, will celebrate and present Seán Ó Riada’s important contribution to music in Ireland.”

Ann-Marie Power, Head of RTÉ Arts and Culture said: “Seán Ó Riada gave traditional music a dynamic place in a new modern Irish state. Now, fifty years after the country mourned his untimely death at the age of forty, RTÉ is delighted, as part of its 50th anniversary special programming on radio, television and online, to partner with the National Concert Hall and the Arts Council to bring these two wonderful Portraits of Seán Ó Riada concerts live to a national and international audience – streaming on rte.ie/culture as well as on nch.ie – and subsequently, through highlights programmes on RTÉ One and RTÉ lyric fm, on the anniversary weekend in early October. Ó Riada became the wind of inspiration and it’s moving to experience the richness and vibrancy he inspired in generations of musicians and writers right up to this present moment.”

Portraits of Seán Ó Riada Part I on September 25th at 2pm will see the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Brophy, explore Ó Riada’s landmark orchestral output. Ó Riada’s ambition was to create orchestral music in the European tradition. As he said himself, “it is my composition that gives meaning to my existence”. The programme includes his landmark ‘Hercules Dux Ferrariae’, the evocative ‘Banks of the Sullane’ and ‘Ceol na Laoi’ as well as his famous film scores for ‘Mise Éire’ and ‘Saoirse’. This performance includes contributions from fiddler Aoife Ní Bhríain and uilleann piper Mick O’Brien.

Portraits of Seán Ó Riada Part II on September 25th at 8pm features Peadar Ó Riada with Ceoltóirí Chualann and a host of the country’s finest musicians and singers. This portrait shines a light on Ó Riada’s extraordinary legacy, one that has helped shape the national psyche. His diverse and influential canon will be celebrated by acclaimed artists such as traditional singer Seán Ó Sé, fiddler Sean Keane, concertina player Cormac Begley, composer and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Molloy, Sibéal Ní Chasaide and Ó Riada’s granddaughters Doireann and Siún Ní Ghlacáin.  Also performing on the night are Mick O’Brien, Michael Tubridy, John Kelly, Kevin Glackin, Seán Potts and Eamonn McGiveney and Mel Mercier.

Elsewhere in the programme Crash Ensemble will interpret his landmark ‘Hercules Dux Ferrariae : Nomos 1’ with single-strings. Ó Riada also had a considerable impact on the world of poetry, for this celebratory event Stephen Rea will explore the effect he had on the writings of poets like Seamus Heaney and Thomas Kinsella. In addition, a curated soundscape contextualises Ó Riada’s disparate musical life.

Ó Riada is one of the most important figures in the history of Irish music. Over the course of his life, which included time as Music Director at Radio Éireann and The Abbey, founder and director of Ceoltóirí Chualann, a lecturer in music in UCC as well as extensive performance, composition and broadcasting work, he changed forever the evolution and perception of Irish traditional music. His soundtrack for ‘Mise Eire’ and the album ‘O Riada Sa Gaiety’ are two of Ireland’s most culturally significant artefacts.

Portraits of Seán Ó Riada Part I: Curator: Anthony Long, RTÉ NSO /Curatorial advisor: Liam O’Connor .

Portraits of Seán Ó Riada Part II: Curator: Liam O’Connor with Gary Sheehan, NCH.

shiv Shares New Single ‘Where You Are’

Zimbabwean-Irish singer-songwriter, shiv, returns with her brand new single ‘Where You Are’ on September 17th. The track is taken from the upcoming EP ‘The Love Interlude’ set for release October 8th.

The first track to be lifted from the artists second EP, the latest track ‘Where You Are’ is another blend of shiv’s signature lo-fi R&B and soul sound that captivated tastemakers and fans around the world; peppered with hip-hop and sultry jazz, the song was written in Paris with producer and sax player Adrien Soleiman. With a knack for writing refreshingly honest lyrics on the trials and tribulations of life and relationships, shiv returns with another deeply personal track exploring the often chaotic journey of love. “We have been fed a narrative of a perfect kind of love, that is effortless and uncomplicated, that means that you will find someone who fits every part of you flawlessly,” the artist muses. “More often than not, this isn’t the case, it’s the imperfection that makes love fulfilling, it’s in learning and growing that you find happiness that is gratifying because of the time you have spent nurturing it.” The instrumentation and vocal melodies reflect the ever-changing journey that love takes you on and help to enhance the emotions felt throughout. The disorderly nature of love is reflected in the verse, juxtaposed with the ethereal switch in the chorus which indicates the sometimes other-worldly sense of elation felt when completely and utterly infatuated with someone. Embodying the spirit of Spring in the song, with the cycle of love getting ready to begin again. “It is a time of rebirth, hope, and new beginnings following the taxing and draining experience brought on by the cold and lonely winter months. Spring opens up a fresh perspective and makes way for a new path to be tread with fresh eyes and a wealth of experience and wisdom.”

shiv – the moniker of Siobhan McClean – has been keeping herself busy behind the scenes with the four-track audio-visual EP, shot in 16mm film. Using seasonal visionary and music to represent the emotions we experience in the cyclical and ever-changing journey of love, the songs on the body of work represent each season of the year and will be accompanied by a short-film type visual: “it’s cyclical, with highs and lows, but if you nurture it you come out of the lows stronger, bigger and better and can get back to that new love feeling, in whatever form or direction it turns into..” Honing her craft in delicate yet personal storytelling since the beginning of her career just over two years ago. Along with self-taught melodic production and understated yet refreshingly honest lyrics that immediately pull at the heart strings, the EP is another exploration into the young artist’s journey through life and love as she navigates the world on her own terms.

Seán Finn Releases Single ‘Summer is Over’

Originating from rural Ireland, Seán Finn is a multi-instrumental songwriter, grounded in pop and jazz. With a few years of songwriting under his belt, Seán’s homespun style provides a warm and inviting soundscape for his listeners. Seán is currently working together with sound engineer Jack Roulston on a project titled ‘Pencil In Regret’. The project consists of 10 songs that were written before and during the pandemic.

‘Summer Is Over’ is the final single to be released from his upcoming project ‘Pencil In Regret’. The track is an upbeat and serene banger that takes you back to when summers lasted forever and school days seemed so far away. The track is lushly produced by Finn, with warm vocal melodies, a playful bassline, melancholy guitars and a vibrant rhythm section that was produced by collaborator Conor Barry.

“I would describe ‘Summer Is Over’ as my first sincere attempt at writing a single. The production feels like it’s a big step in the right direction for me, it all sounds very clean and proper, yet it still sounds like me. It’s definitely my best song to date. It captures that melancholy feeling when the summer is drawing to a close, and your summer romance didn’t pan out the way you had hoped. Instead of facing the rejection at hand, you decide to focus on the positives. That kind of behaviour will catch up with you eventually, but in the moment it provides a little comfort. It might be naïve, but it’s nice.”

‘Summer Is Over’ will be released on the 17th of September.

Pillow Queens Share ‘Rats’ & Sign to Royal Mountain Records

Dublin’s Pillow Queens had been quietly building momentum on their side of the Atlantic since the release of their 2016 debut EP Calm Girls. Selling out shows in Ireland, supporting artists like IDLES, Pussy Riot and Future Islands, and earning enthusiastic support in the UK before they independently released their 2020 LP In Waiting. The album was a major breakthrough for the band, scoring praise across US, UK and Irish media – notably from the Guardian and the Irish Times, along with multiple A-list spots on the BBC 6 Music playlist –  a RTÉ Choice Music Prize nomination for Irish Album Of The Year, and perhaps most remarkably of all a US national television appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Today the band are returning to announce their signing to Royal Mountain Records, and to mark the occasion are sharing the rambunctious “Rats,” alongside a video directed by Michael Maxxis (Orville Peck, City and Colour). The announcement arrives ahead of the band’s upcoming dates in Ireland, the UK and Europe which begin in Berlin on September 18th.

Long a staple of their live sets, the track was recorded with Tommy Mclaughlin (SOAK), who produced In Waiting, and features a sample of a crowd sing-along from one of the band’s sold-out shows in Dublin prior to the pandemic. According to guitarist Pamela Connolly, shooting the video for the track was a cathartic moment for the band; “Filming the video for ‘Rats’ was catharsis at its best,” explains guitarist Pamela Connolly. “After 18 months of no gigs and being inside, we finally got a chance to gather in a venue and simulate a real life gig with some of our closest friends. The chant section towards the end of the song is usually a highlight of our live set and we had really missed that energy so having a chance to recreate that was really special”.

‘Rats’ is out now on Royal Mountain Records. You can listen to it here.

West Cork Based Newcomers Les SalAmandas Share New Single ‘Mouldy’

Les SalAmandas, an original singer song-writing act new to the Irish music scene, are Julie O’Sullivan (Ballydehob, West Cork) and Colyne Laverriere (Hostun, France).

The duo are currently recording their debut album, which will be co-produced by award winning Canadian Producer Daniel Ledwell. Following their successful debut single ‘Now Is The Time’, they share ‘Mouldy’ – the second single from this much anticipated collection of songs.

‘Mouldy’ on Bandcamp: https://lessalamandas.bandcamp.com/track/mouldy

Chatting about the release of the new song, Julie says “Who doesn’t need a tune to bop to? While this song has a very fun feel to it, the message it portrays is one of heartbreak. In our new song we’ve tried to merge the exciting feeling of a new relationship with the heartache of it slowly meeting the end of its life. In these moments it’s important to remember you will survive.”

Colyne adds “Who never felt the excitement of a new relationship? The rush, the butterflies, the honeymoon phase, as they call it. When every minute spent with your person is special and magic. Well sometimes you just realise that it was not meant to be, and what once was fresh and pretty turns into ugliness and mould.”

Julie and Colyne met in late 2018 in Ballydehob West Cork, Ireland. Les SalAmandas made their live debut at Levis Corner House, an award-winning Irish venue, as part of ‘Secret Song Festival’ (2019).  On 1st September 2020, they performed at a sold-out gig in Levis Corner House and revealed a maturity of song-writing well beyond their years.

Immersing themselves in the cultural centre that is West Cork, Julie and Colyne spent the last eighteen months writing their own material together and collaborating with local and national musicians. This includes being invited to perform on the acclaimed Irish folk singer Ger Wolfe’s new album ‘The Morning Star’, as well as performing at Ger’s live album launch in February 2020. In October 2020, they were invited to perform a livestream gig through Mick Flannery’s social media pages, an award-winning, double platinum selling artist, and garnered over 10,000 views of their performance in 24 hours. They were one of four Irish Artists invited to perform a set at ‘Folk Alliance International’ a prestigious global music conference, in February 2021 as part of The Starhouse Collective showcase.

Summer 2021 has been an exciting one for Les SalAmandas, venturing away from West Cork, they performed at Waterford’s Summer in The City festival alongside Paddy Casey, supporting Mick Flannery at Connolly’s of Leap, playing a sold-out gig in Levis’ Corner House and were invited to play at Coughlan’s Live new festival ‘The Great Beyond’.

While Les SalAmandas keep their thoughtful lyrics and smooth harmonies, they take a walk down to pop town for their new song. ‘Mouldy’ is the bop that will get us through the darkening days. The new single is out now, Wednesday 15th September: https://lessalamandas.bandcamp.com/track/mouldy

Julie and Colyne have also launched a Fundit campaign to create their debut album. You can donate to the production costs, mixing, mastering, artwork, engineering and rewards costs, and in turn receive some brilliant awards like CDs, tshirts, prints, a beautiful piece of furniture, songwriting workshops, and private shows.
