Waltons Music Celebrates 100 Years in Business

Very few companies in the world are fortunate enough to last 100 years.

Waltons Music is delighted to say that we will be joining the 100-year club and celebrating our centenary in business in 2022.

Founded in 1922, the same year as the Irish Free State, by Martin Walton, a veteran of the Easter Rising and War of Independence, Waltons Music has proudly been at the core of Irish Music and music in Ireland since our establishment.

For 100 years Waltons Music has been a mecca for Irish musicians both at home and for the Irish Diaspora around the world.

In addition to our retail music business, over the course of our history, Waltons Music has also manufactured musical instruments, from harps to tin whistles, recorded Irish music through our music label, published music books to teach Irish music and songs, run a sponsored radio programme of Irish music for over 30 years and run music schools that to this day educate many of Ireland’s musicians.

Not only is Waltons Music celebrating 100 years as an independently owned Irish company but is also celebrating 100 years as a family run business.

Niall Walton, third generation Managing Director says that “From listening to its founder Martin Walton and his son, my father, Patrick Walton to now watching my children, Waltons Music’s fourth generation as they work to service the music industry in Ireland to the best of their ability, it has been a privilege to have a bird’s eye view of the great developments in the music industry in Ireland”.

Additionally, he added that “We feel that the history of the company and its evolution reflects many of the changes that have occurred in the Irish state over the last 100 years and that we hope to have a place in its future for another few generations”.

To celebrate the achievement and their centenary Waltons Music will announcing a number of celebrations throughout 2022 through their social media and website.

Silverbacks Share New Track “A Job Worth Something”

Dublin art-rock quintet Silverbacks are today sharing “A Job Worth Something”, the latest track to be taken from their upcoming new album Archive Material which is set for release on January 21st via Full Time Hobby. “A Job Worth Something” was given its premiere by The FADER who said: “A Job Worth Something” weaves anxiety, pride, and a dash of shame into three minutes of wiry punk.”

Listen to “A Job Worth Something” here.

As Silverbacks release more new music from the follow-up to their Choice Music Prize-nominated debut album Fad, a picture of the band’s sardonic, often surrealist view of the characters and communities in their lives has emerged. In new track “A Job Worth Something”, Silverbacks turn the focus onto themselves and call into question their own value in the world. Vocalist and guitarist Daniel O’Kelly comments further on the song.

“For most of the pandemic I lived with my sister who is a healthcare worker and was working in the designated Covid hospital in St James’ Dublin. Unfortunately, I was far less heroic, writing copy for a car insurance company.

This song is about feeling embarrassed about how different our lives were at this time. When it comes to telling my grandchildren what all this was like, I’ll be telling them about my sisters who have more important stories to share.”

Silverbacks embark on a IE / UK headline tour through March.

More about Silverbacks’ new album Archive Material

Archive Material only cements Silverbacks’ status as one of Ireland’s most fascinating bands. Recorded at Dublin’s Sonic Studios in November 2020, with Daniel Fox undertaking production duties once more, it finds the band leaning into their early influences, delivering idiosyncratic indie-rock packed with intricate, Tom Verlaine-esque “guitarmony”. Other reference points for the record included Neil Young, Weyes Blood and – on ‘Wear My Medals’ in particular – Bradford Cox and Cate Le Bon’s collaborative record Myths 004.

Where Fad found Silverbacks focused on recapturing the live experience rather than reveling in studio experimentation, Archive Material skillfully traverses the line between the two. As a unit, they replicate that irrepressible live energy via complex arrangements incorporating everything from wistful Rhodes (‘Carshade’) to congas and Gang Of Four-style bass (‘Different Kind Of Holiday’).

Thematically, the record is every bit as rich, displaying an anthropological approach as exemplified by the album’s artwork. The initial premise for ‘They Were Never Our People’ came from a YouTube comment, portraying the decline of a town that has lost its footfall as the result of a bypass. Meanwhile, ‘Central Tones’ is an empathetic character study of someone seemingly content to trade off former glories, but secretly deeply unhappy.

On several songs, the pandemic functions as a particularly effective prism through which to examine ideas of community. ‘A Job Worth Something’ finds Daniel reflecting on his real-life experiences working in insurance while his sister treated patients on a COVID ward, and the feelings of futility and guilt he felt at the time. ‘Different Kind Of Holiday’ was inspired by the ways in which previously uncommunicative neighbours bonded with each other during periods of enforced confinement. Throughout, his observations arrived drenched in the same surreal strain of gallow’s humour that many of us were forced to adopt to lighten the toughest moments of the lockdown.

Daniel explains, “I can’t remember who it was, but I saw a musician who said that they’d be keeping away from writing anything about the pandemic, because who wants to hear about that? But I’d much rather hear about an event via someone who actually lived through it, rather than someone writing about it retrospectively.”

Keenly observed and vividly rendered, Archive Material is an eye-witness account of human resilience as much as it is a compelling indie-rock record. Future historians take note.

New Track From And So I Watch You From Afar ‘III Lung’

Today, legendary Belfast, Ireland based instrumental outfit And So I Watch You From Afar has shared “III.Lung”, the third single from their ambitious upcoming multimedia album Jettison.

The latest offering from the group will be available on February 18th, 2022 via Equal Vision Records in partnership with Velocity Records.  Through 40 minutes of sonic exploration spread across nine distinct parts and a visual accompaniment by artist Sam Wiehl, Jettison traverses the various shades of ASIWYFA’s euphoric instrumental output. The Arco String Quartet adds moments of ethereal elegance, juxtaposed against cryptic dialogue by Emma Ruth Rundle and Neil Fallon throughout the album, which is available for pre-order here.

Jangly opening guitar chords and angular percussion introduce “III.Lung” as a nuanced addition to the bands sonic arsenal. The song builds the opening riff into an ethereal and beautiful soundscape awash with twinkling guitars and a crescendoing wave of compelling drum and bass.

On the scope of their upcoming album, the band had this to say:

“Nothing in our repertoire comes close to the ambition of this latest project—the multimedia piece Jettison. The album is a memorable experience that transports the listener away from the tumultuous times and into a blissful musical utopia.”

The band will embark on a headlining tour supporting Jettison across Europe and the UK early next year, a full itinerary is available below. You can pre-order the album here.

About ASIWYFA

Ireland’s instrumental rock quartet And So I Watch You From Afar has defied the layman’s definition of post-rock by absorbing new ideas and pushing the boundaries of their intricate and ecstatic guitar-based compositions. Crashing out of the gate with the big-riff worship and arena-level melodic heroics of their eponymous debut, ASIWYFA have continuously introduced new spins on their original sound while simultaneously expanding their sonic palette with every new album, taking in and repurposing everything from African highlife to Irish trad to the weirdo math-rock of the late ‘90s / early ‘00s. Their upcoming multi-media piece Jettison was conceived by And So I Watch You From Afar’s guitarist Rory Friers and brought to life by the band, orchestrator Connor O’Boyle, the Arco String Quartet, and visual artist Sam Wiehl. Jettison is a fusion of ASIWYFA’s life-affirming musical acrobatics, the sweeping grandeur of film scores, and the surreal and sublime capabilities of moving pictures

Jettison is by no means a normal ASIWYFA album. Rather, it is a very deliberate departure as opposed to an evolutionary step to increasingly ambitious, complex, and conceptual work. The full Jettison experience, replete with Wiehl’s visuals and the string accompaniments, will only happen occasionally, such as the full-house October 2021 performance at The Queen Elizabeth Hall at London’s Southbank Centre. Yet even in the album format, Jettison is a special experience, one that transports the listener away from the tumultuous times and into a blissful musical utopia. Equal Vision Records is proud to present this document of the aural component of Jettison to the world on CD, LP, and digital platforms on February 18, 2022.

Offica Wins Ollys TV’s Irish Bests Artists 2021 Award For ‘Obito’

Irish media platform Ollys TV presents Drogheda’s Drill rising rapper Offica with an Irish Billboard Award.

The second annual music award honors achievements in music based on key interactions with music fans, as well as album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement.

A92 received the award for their performance in 2020 with their life changing Plugged In freestyle with Fumez the engineer, exploding in popularity, going from being Ireland’s premier Drill collective to one of the biggest Drill collectives worldwide.

The centerpiece of the Irelands’ premier drill collective A92, Offica has been leading the charge of this revolution of the hip-hop sub genre. Donning his trademark mask at the beginning of his career, tracks like “Naruto Drillings” “Blue Bird” and “Face Reveal” established him as a force within the UK drill scene. Representing Ireland and Drogheda always

The video marked the beginning of a new chapter for Offica. Having first risen to prominence in the international drill scene wearing his trademark orange Obito mask – as seen in the video for his breakout hit ‘Naruto Drillings’, and the subsequent viral remix with KSI – he finally removed the mask in May 2020, in the video for ‘Face Reveal’. Now, in his new video, he continues to lace his verses with anime references, while opting for a new white Obito mask. Produced by his frequent collaborator Kidspyal, the track finds Offica returning to his roots with a ‘Naruto Drillings’ inspired beat. The video, which premiered on major UK platforms GRM Daily, also features appearances from Offica’s A92 collective.

Donny Lunny and Atlantic Arc in Concert

Atlantic Arc is a collaborative ensemble of renowned traditional musicians and singers from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, under the musical direction of Dónal Lunny, one of Ireland’s most accomplished performers, composers and producers.

Having formed in 2016 for a series of one-off shows, including Cork Folk Festival and Celtic Connections, the members discovered a shared interest in further exploring and cultivating contemporary expressions of traditional music.

Of the ensemble Dónal Lunny says, “The heart of this music is found in the Celtic countries along the arc of the Atlantic seaboard, from the west of Ireland to the coast of Galicia and expressing it in fresh ways that link it into contemporary music”.

Atlantic Arc will participate in two masterclasses in early 2022: beginning in Galway on January 14-16 and Carlow on February 4-6.

The group will facilitate 2 full days of masterclasses culminating in a concert on day three. The concert is open to the public but participants will also get to experience the Atlantic Arc’s technical rehearsal, sound check and concert as part of the programme.  These masterclasses are facilitated by Music Generation Galway City, via SoundWaves, a new annual programme of masterclasses and concerts.

Applications to attend the masterclass should be submitted to www.soundwavesmusicspace.com by Wednesday 5th January.

The band’s first single, ‘My Son David’, featuring Atlantic Arc’s two distinctly expressive singers, Pauline Scanlon and Jarlath Henderson from the band’s forthcoming album, was released in 2021 and received huge reaction, leading to eager anticipation for the album release in early 2022.

Although the musicians arrived in studio with the basic plan for the song, the band’s natural chemistry soon sparked off and the arrangement eventually shaped into the song as you hear it now.  Plans to record a full album had to be shelved last year due to the Covid crisis. Of the single Lunny says, “the creative chemistry makes this combination of artists very special. A very successful Kickstarter campaign to fund our debut album earlier this year enabled us to come together long enough to record an album that captures the unique spirit of the music which we love.”

Atlantic Arc features Tara Breen on fiddle, Sharon Howley on cello, Davie Ryan on drums, Ewen Vernal on bass, Graham Henderson on keyboards, Jarlath Henderson on vocals, guitars pipes and whistles, Pauline Scanlon on vocals, and Dónal Lunny on bouzouki and guitar. As a special guest, flute and whistle player Alan Doherty will join for the Galway show.

SoundWaves, the inaugural series, is presented by four Music Generation areas: Wexford, Galway, Carlow and Ennis and features Donal Lunny’s exceptional 9 piece traditional music ensemble Atlantic Arc.

Supported by the Arts Council: Traditional Arts + Young People, Children and Education.

Tickets for Black Box Theatre, Galway on January 16th are available via https://tht.ie/3708/atlantic-arc

Tickets €20 / €16 concession

National Concert Hall Welcomes Leading Contemporary Artists For Its Innovation ‘Perspectives’ Series 2022

The National Concert Hall’s Perspectives series sees leading contemporary international and Irish artists explore the musical present in a series of five new and exciting concerts announced today for 2022.

Perspectives 2022 is as diverse as ever boasting performances by Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Vijay Iyer and Chicago-based vocalist and composer Haley Fohr aka Circuit Des Yeux. In addition, celebrated musician Martin Hayes will return to the NCH stage with his new project the Common Ground Ensemble, this band rooted in traditional Irish music that also embraces jazz, improvised and classical idioms. Elsewhere in the series, pioneering artist Laurie Anderson follows her 2017 residency by bringing her latest solo work The Art of Falling to the National Concert Hall – the project addresses the complex questions of our shifting world. And finally, one of jazz’s most influential guitarists John McLaughlin will perform with his electric fusion quartet 4th Dimension.  Further Perspectives concerts and projects will be announced throughout 2022.

Robert Read, CEO of the National Concert Hall said: ‘Perspectives presents the most vital, ground-breaking artistic contemporary performances to the National Concert Hall audience. It strives to break boundaries and exceed expectations. Over the years Perspectives has welcomed artists such as Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, Brad Mehldau, Kristin Hersch and Meshell Ndegeocello. For 2022 we are proud to present such a high-calibre, inventive programme of events and would like to thank Davy our Innovation Partner and The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media for their continued support.’

Vijay Iyer is one of the most intellectually and musically exciting artists in jazz today. His unique musical approach has carved out a path as an influential, prolific, shape-shifting presence in twenty-first-century music. He has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a United States Artist Fellowship and a Grammy nomination amongst many accolades. He recently served as composer-in-residence at London’s Wigmore Hall, music director of the Ojai Music Festival, and artist-in-residence at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has released twenty-four albums of his music, most recently UnEasy – an album as a trio featuring bassist Linda May Han Oh with whom he will perform at the NCH. The New Yorker described it as ‘a triumph of small-group interplay and fertile invention’.

Martin Hayes is one of the world’s most celebrated fiddle players and a key figure in Irish traditional music. He began playing the fiddle at the age of seven in his native East Clare and went on to become a multiple All Ireland Fiddle Champion as a teenager. He went on to form a successful duo with Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill in the late 80s and also enjoyed solo success. In 2011 he founded Irish-American supergroup The Gloaming who have released three successful studio albums and Live at the NCH. His new band the Common Ground Ensemble, although rooted in Irish traditional music, possesses a wealth of talent spanning, improvisation, arrangement, jazz, avant-garde and cutting edge contemporary classical. The line-up comprises Cormac McCarthy (piano, ‘Cottage Evolution’), Kate Ellis (cello, Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble), Kyle Sanna (guitar, a collaborator with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile), Brian Donnellan (bouzouki, harmonium, concertina, and, like Hayes, an alumnus of The Tulla Céili Band), David Power (Uilleann pipes) and Síle Denver (sean nós singer, harp).

Haley Fohr is a vocalist and composer based in Chicago, Illinois. Her musical endeavours focus around the human condition, and her 10-year career as Circuit des Yeux has grown into one of America’s most successful efforts to connect the personal to the universal. Her acclaimed latest album ‘-io’ maps a geography of grief – a place where ‘everything is ending all the time.’ While Fohr’s music has never been short on ambition, these songs are striking in their brilliance and strangeness. On ‘-io’, Circuit des Yeux has delivered a work that is vivid, immense, and fully illuminated. ‘Haley Fohr has crafted her most expansive work to date, capturing a sprawl of emotions too complicated to be named’ Pitchfork.

Laurie Anderson is one of the most important artists working today. A composer, musician and avant-garde artist, she is known for her multimedia presentations and innovative use of technology. As writer, director, visual artist and vocalist she has created ground-breaking works that span the worlds of art, theatre and experimental music. Her recording career, launched by ‘O Superman’ in 1981, includes the soundtrack to her feature film Home of the Brave and Life on a String (2001).  In 2002, Anderson was appointed the first artist-in-residence of NASA which culminated in her 2004 touring solo performance The End of the Moon. Recent projects include a series of audio-visual installations and a high-definition film, Hidden Inside Mountains, created for World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan. In 2007 she received the prestigious Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for her outstanding contribution to the arts. In 2011 her exhibition of new visual work titled Forty-Nine Days In the Bardo opened in Philadelphia, and Boat, her first exhibition of paintings, premiered at the Vito Schnabel Gallery in New York. She has recently been appointed as a three-year fellow at both EMPAC, the multi-media centre at RPI in Troy, NY, and PAC at UCLA. The Art of Falling is Laurie Anderson’s latest solo work addressing the complex questions of our shifting world. Incorporating songs, electronics and visual imagery, The Art of Falling is a masterful mix of stories about falling in love, falling asleep and falling in line.

John McLaughlin is one of jazz’s most influential guitarists, from his work with Miles Davis in his ground-breaking fusion era to projects such as Mahavisnhu and Shakti. Mc Laughlin’s band project – 4th Dimension – brings together musicians from different cultures and musical traditions to form an all-star band. The line-up features Gary Husband on keyboards, Étienne M’Bappé on bass and drummer Ranji Barot. The music of this group integrates all these cultural influences in a unique way while at the same time preserving the spontaneity of jazz. Gary Husband is a truly versatile instrumentalist, he switches from keyboard to drums with amazing ease and has worked with many well-known musicians such as Jeff Beck and Gary Moore. Ranjit Barot – Indian by birth and living in Mumbai – has been known for years as a globally active drummer (for Bill Evans, Scott Kinsey, among others). Since 2011 he has been a member of 4th Dimension. Étienne M’Bappé is one today’s world’s finest bass players. He has performed with Ray Charles, Salif Keita, Joe Zawinul and many others

Perspectives at the National Concert Hall is supported by Davy as Innovation Partner.

Hallie has made the ‘RTE Recommends Playlist’ with all her singles to date.

Kevin Herm Connolly Releases Video For ‘It’s OK (‘Cos We’re In Love)’

“I’m delighted to finally be able to share this video with you, begun during the first heady flushes of lockdown when, like the rest of you, I found myself stuck at home, looking at some way to fill the time and flex my creative muscles.

As well as my “From the Washing Machine” live performance videos, I decided to make a video for the studio version of my song “It’s OK (‘Cos We’re in Love)”, taken from my most recent album “Make It Up”.

I chose the track as I felt it was suitably manic and energetic and that I would be able to have some fun with it. Armed with a greenscreen I borrowed from my neighbour, I filmed myself “acting out” with various props and in various parts of my house. I also put the call out on social media to get other locked-down folk to do likewise and to send me their own footage. They didn’t disappoint…

It was lovely receiving people’s contributions and to turn the project, begun in isolation, into more of a collaborative one. I’m very grateful to the people from all over the world (Spain, France, the USA, Mexico, South Korea, the UK, Ireland…) who got involved!”

A Galway native, Kevin has been writing songs since he was eight years old, and is now at the stage of his career where he might be called a veteran. Music has been what he has built his life around, for better or for worse. “I’ve tried living without music as my focus, but it has only led me down some dark alleys,” he says.

As a teenager, he remembers spending weekends locked away in the sitting-room with a 4-track recorder and a microphone. “The joy I get from putting the pieces of a song together and emerging with a finished product has never diminished”, he says.  He formed his first band “Bliss” with some school friends. They wrote songs about school and sexually active bishops and learned valuable lessons about lying promoters, shifty managers and how one wasp can single-handedly ruin an entire live performance.

In college he joined his brother in the alt-country band El Diablo. Based in Dublin, they released two albums on Catchy Go Go Records and toured in Ireland and the USA. Over the years he has also collaborated on projects with the National Prayer Breakfast (NPB), singer Alison O’Donnell of the legendary 60s folk band Mellow Candle, and Matthew Mark Anthony (Life After Modelling) and gigged in Spain, France, England, Norway, Ecuador and Peru, where he lived for a period.

‘Monsters’, the first collection of his own songs, was released under the name Herm in 2009. Ireland’s leading alternative music magazine (Hot Press) and radio station (Phantom FM) included it in their top ten Irish albums of the year and reviewers drew favourable comparisons with artists such as Beck, The Eels and Tom Waits.

In 2010, Kevin and his friend Paul Clancy began performing as a duo under the name Clancy. They recorded an album together called ‘Road to the Heart’. Sadly, Paul passed away shortly after its completion. The album was released posthumously, and the Irish Independent described it as “an accomplished, meditative collection…moving and beautiful”. Four more songs that the pair had been working on were released as the Clancy EP in 2011.

The second collection of Kevin’s songs, “Make It Up”, was released in 2019 and reveals a development in Kevin’s song-writing from the quirky and edgy indie pop of his debut to a more reflective and organic approach. Described as “accomplished and impressive” (Hot Press), “refined and contemplative” (Connacht Tribune), the album is available on all digital platforms now.
