Sarah McTernan Set to Unleash Anthemic Single ‘Gotta Get Out’

Irish Pop Singer/Songwriter Sarah McTernan is set to release her (2022) debut single ‘Gotta Get Out’ on 22nd April.

Sarah began her original music journey in 2021, where she accumulated two NO1’s on the iTunes charts and landed on NO5 in the Irish Homegrown Charts with her latest single ‘Heavy On My Heart’.

Her upcoming single ‘Gotta Get Out’ describes the internal, hidden struggles of anxiety and being trapped inside your own thoughts. The song addresses the power that anxiety holds over you, until you release the fear and embrace your inner strength. Sarah is influenced hugely by Daughter, Becky Hill and Ava Max. The Track was co-written with Darren Martyn. Recorded in ‘DM Unsigned’ Recording Studios London, Mixed and Produced by Darren Martyn. Mastered by Andres Mayo.

Sarah’s music brings us a cocktail of soulful vocals alongside Electro Pop music. She is hugely influenced by Electro-pop/dance music and specifically artists such as Becky Hill, Ava Max and Bebe Rexha. However, she is also hugely influenced by more soulful singers; Lauren Hill, Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Irish Singer/Songwriter Sarah McTernan began her career with an audition for The Voice of Ireland in 2015 with judges: Bressie, Una Healy, Kian Egan and Rachel Stevens, with an exceptional audition of ‘Who you are’ by Jessie J. All four judges turned their chairs and fought it out to be picked as Sarah’s mentor. After an indecisive wait, it was Rachel Stevens who would lead Sarah to the final and finish in third place of the competition.

With success and recognition from The Voice, Sarah went on to perform in venues all over Europe to thousands of people and represented Ireland in Eurovision, before returning to Ireland where she has been writing and recording new material.

Sarah’s debut single ‘Loving You’ came in February 2021, which went #2 on the itunes charts and entered the homegrown charts. Since then she has released her second single ‘Close My Eyes’ and latest track ‘Heavy On My Heart’ to which both singles went straight to #1 on the iTunes charts and #5/#10 on the Official Homegrown Irish charts.

We can expect a lot more new music from the songstress this year.

Robocobra Quartet Announce New Single ‘Wellness’ & Live Shows at Whelans

Today, Belfast’s Robocobra Quartet return with the announcement of their highly anticipated new album “Living Isn’t Easy”, their first full length release in four years. The news comes on the heels of their recent double single “Heaven” / “Night”, and the band’s signing to Deptford based label, First Taste Records, who will release the album on 17th June 2022. To celebrate, the band have announced a live show 17th September at Whelans (Up). Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10am.

“Wellness”, the adrenaline-inducing lead single from the new album, sees the band further expanding on their malleable template merging punk and hardcore influenced bass lines with a jazz-inflected drum section and restrained vamping synths, which occasionally give way to frenetic and cacophonous sax lines. Thematically, the chaotic ear-worm is about how the process of healing sometimes leads us to something even more toxic, with drummer-vocalist Chris W Ryan simply reciting the daily routines of influencers aloud, read from an actual newspaper article. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Speaking about the single, he says, “There’s a song by The Fall called Dr Buck’s Letter where Mark E Smith reads out an interview by Pete Tong and there’s a beautiful absurdity to it so I thought I should just repeat this article verbatim as it didn’t need any fictionalising at all”.

The single is also available on 7” with a b-side titled “I Love You” – the vinyl itself also nods towards the process of healing and touches on the albums wider themes surrounding mental health and the band’s openness to discuss this by also featuring band members antidepressant doses in milligrams.

The single gives a first insight into some of the key themes that are running throughout the new album. Ryan says that album “is all about aspiration – the things we aspire to and the things we are told to aspire to: work, success, family, health and wealth.”

Loosely based around one central character negotiating the absurdity of modern life, the record glimpses into childhood trauma; the mundanity of office work; the mania of corporate culture; sexual identity and the cult of wellness. Songs touch on topics such as looking to become a homeowner amidst an Irish housing crisis; the desire to have children despite the planet’s bloating population; and the exploration of sexuality in a world of binaries. Inspired by the mania of late capitalism, the recent singles “Heaven” and “Wellness” echo the characters of Falling Down (1993) and American Psycho (2000) drudging through corporate life with the songs’ protagonist reaching psychotic break as each track builds to a boil of cult-driven chaos.

Produced by Ryan (whose production credits also include Just Mustard, NewDad, Junk Drawer and many other up-and-coming artists out of Ireland), the recording sessions were laid out with specific intentions: All of the vocals on the album were recorded in one sitting in order to give a sense of the same perspective and tone from the narrator across the album, with his voice becoming increasingly worn and exhausted by the time the album closer “Night” comes around.

From the post-Brexit purgatory of Northern Ireland, Robocobra Quartet are also trying to pick out some truth amongst the fiction. Plant “(The Succulent Blues)” holds a mirror to the darkness of suicide, a subject too commonly discussed amongst friends (Northern Ireland being grimly crowned the UK & Ireland’s suicide capital in recent years). Speaking on the track Ryan says, “There’s a great 70s Irish pop song written by Gilbert O Sullivan called “Alone Again (Naturally)” that hints at sorrow with a uniquely Irish sense of dark humour. It made me think about how we deal as individuals with the epidemic of suicide in Northern Ireland, with so many us having had people close to us take their lives. The track Plant (The Succulent Blues) reflects on death but tries to linger & rest on the beauty of life and its capacity for happiness.”

Elsewhere, “Chromo Sud,” the album’s 9 minute epic centrepiece about housing turns the page to joy as the band lets their jazz flag fly with screaming saxophone, encircled by breakbeats and synth bass. “We’re through the worst of it now” yells Ryan in a slither of positivity amongst the gloom. “We originally wrote the instrumental as part of an improvised performance at the Belfast Film Festival live scoring the 1968 experimental film called Chromo Sud. The name stuck and it became a Robocobra song proper. This is the one where we let the jazz hang out,” says Ryan.

The band’s hometown of Belfast is also central to the band and the new album. The city has seen glimpses of the spotlight in the past year, with the local art group Array Collective winning the Turner Prize and Kenneth Branagh Oscar-nominated film Belfast (2021) in the headlines. The city’s historically low rent (due to its assumed danger by outsiders) has allowed artists like Robocobra Quartet to flourish and hone their craft for years without worrying about broad appeal or commercial interest, instead designing a singular style that is unique and borne of interests across punk rock, jazz, avant-garde and modern pop.

The unique placement of Northern Ireland as a kind of quasi-European post-brexit loophole means that Irish and British pop culture both influence the band’s work, with various band members growing up with Irish, British and European backgrounds.

Having released two full-length studio albums to date, the new material finds the band revered as cult favourites. Their musical freedom and proclivity for improvisation often results in Robocobra Quartet being spoken about in the same breath as jazz and experimental music but their background is in punk rock and indie rock just as much as the avant-garde. They simply deal with what they have at their disposal – a collective of six members of wildly different musical backgrounds swapping in and out to make a touring quartet, which has taken them across Europe to Montreux Jazz Festival, Latitude Festival, and as far as Inversia Festival in the polar north of Russia. All while receiving acclaim from the likes of The Quietus, The Line Of Best Fit, Prog, and BBC Radio 6, seeing comparisons to the likes of Fugazi, BadBadNotGood, Tortoise, Black Midi, Black Country, New Road, and Squid.

Improvisation and experimentation is at the core of Robocobra Quartet’s DNA, whether it be in the fluidity of their line-up or in their unique records which flirt with choral groups and string sections – almost intentionally at odds with their ostensible roots as a post-punk band.

For those who have yet to hear them, the new album will serve as a perfect introduction to the complex world of Robocobra Quartet – a band serious about their music but humorous in their approach, including members with no musical training alongside members with music conservatoire pedigree. The result is a collective of musicians inspired by Stravinsky and Black Flag in equal measures. On stage, the band are protons and electrons circling Ryan; meticulous arrangements and on-the-spot improvisations hang on every word. These words and rhythms are what propel the music of Robocobra Quartet forward and concoct a sound that is groove-driven but cerebral too.

In addition to the new material, Robocobra Quartet have also announced details of a new UK / IRE tour due to take place in September 2022. Full routing including further upcoming live dates can be found below – Tickets for the tour will go on sale Friday 22nd April. More information HERE.

Aoife Doyle Premieres Animation Video by Marc Corrigan for Title Track from Upcoming Album ‘Infinitely Clear’

Irish singer, musician and songwriter Aoife Doyle will release an animated video for the title track from her highly anticipated third album INFINITELY CLEAR on the 15th of April 2022. The Animation was created by artist Marc Corrigan. This work was kindly supported by The Arts Council of Ireland.

Marc says: ‘The video is a hand drawn animation with story and pacing all inspired by the music and lyrics of Infinitely Clear. Moonlight, starry night, fireworks, and a tapestry of possibilities all set the place, but it is the music that sets the tone and suggests the story that follows. Its a dream world, a fantasy version of the world outside the window.’

Marc Corrigan studied fine art in GMIT and experimented with sound and narrative in early painting exhibitions before naturally transitioning to animation. Marc has been prolific in making short films and music videos and his music videos have been featured in film festivals and galleries globally. He continues to create new work using a variety of traditional and experimental techniques.

Aoife says: ‘I love the storyboard Marc created. It begins with a moonlit room which was the initial inspiration for the song, and sets the scene for the sentiment – infinitely clear, endless possibility’

Songs already released from the album include ‘Strength To Be Strong’, ‘Clare Sky’, ‘They Say’ and ‘Love Conquers All’. They have been warmly received by radio and media at home and abroad, with all songs being crowned ‘Track of The Day’ on HOTPRESS MAGAZINE. Strength To Be Strong was also song of the week on The ACOUSTIC YARD RADIO.

Aoife Doyle is originally from Bray, Co. Wicklow now living in Co. Clare. While she has been performing for many years, it was upon moving to the West Coast of Ireland that she found her songwriting voice.

The album INFINITELY CLEAR was produced by the highly-regarded musician, arranger and producer Michael Buckley.

Doyle is joined by a stellar band on the album, featuring some of Ireland’s most in-demand musicians including vocalist Margot Daly, saxophonist Michael Buckley, trumpet player Ronan Dooney, pianist Johnny Taylor, hammond organist Justin Carroll, guitarist Jack Maher, bassist Andrew Csibi and drummer Dominic Mullan.

INFINITELY CLEAR will be released on 22nd April 2022, and will be available on Bandcamp, Aoife’s website www.aoifedoyle.com and other online platforms.

Peter Richardson Releases Highly Anticipated New Single ‘Pray’

Peter Richardson is a 23-year old singer/songwriter from Dublin. An avid songwriter since the age of 15, Peter grew up surrounded by music. After testing the waters with his original songs at a college open mic, Peter began properly recording his music at home in the summer of 2020. A few months later in October he released his debut single, “The End of The World”, an indie folk ballad filled with choral vocals and stirring, apocalyptic lyrics and instrumentation.

Peter’s dramatic acoustic sound draws from a wide range of influences, drawing on the poeticism and varied sounds of artists such as Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Hozier, Lorde and Ben Howard among countless others. Peter also draws influence from great Irish folk singer/songwriters, such as Paul Brady and Declan O’Rourke.

Peter’s second single, “Please Don’t Believe Me” released in March of 2021, and further expanded his ambitious home-crafted sound. The “Gripping sophomore track” (Hot Press) was featured on RTÉ Radio 1 and Hot Press’ “Track of The Day” upon release. Indie Buddie remarked the track “oozes passion, compelling melodies, and cinematic appeal”, describing it as “a refined display of contemporary pop marking Peter Richardson an artist to keep an eye on.”

Since the release of “Please Don’t Believe Me”, Peter has been working on his debut EP, which will be releasing early this summer. Working with Cork producer Cian Sweeney (1000 Beasts), Peter released the first single from the EP, ‘The Coast’ in February. Praised by Hot Press as “Gentle, soaring and full of nostalgic comfort”, the track received incredible support, and continues to build excitement for what’s to come – “it’ll be monumentally exciting to see where Peter Richardson goes next.” (Hot Press).

The second and final single from the EP, ‘Pray’, will be released on April 15th.

Pray is the second single from Peter Richardson’s debut EP ‘Then & Now’, which will be releasing early this summer. The intimate yet bold track expands Peter’s sound outwards from the largely acoustic realm of The Coast, fusing the same poetic lyricism and soaring vocals with a more contemporary feel, and teasing at the much more varied production which will feature across the rest of the EP. Again, heavily influenced by his folk idols such as Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Hozier, to Peter the lyrics describe the leap of faith that we take when moving to new grounds, and falling into a new love. The song captures the crushing suspense we feel before we take the leap, and the overwhelming bliss once we finally give in. It is an exploration of the idea that ultimately we cannot know what lies before us, we must simply let ourselves fall, and pray that love will treat us kindly.

Corner Boy Release Video For Brand New Single ‘Blackstairs Winter Snow’

Corner Boy have just released the video for their brand new single ‘Blackstairs Winter Snow’, which is out now. The sonically sprawling and anthemic track is the first single to be released from Corner Boy’s upcoming debut album.

Shot in early 2022 across counties; Carlow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Waterford and Cork, the video for Corner Boy’s new single ‘Blackstairs Winter Snow‘ depicts band frontman Mick D’Arcy walking from the Blackstairs Mountains in North Wexford all the way down to Ireland’s most southern point Mizen Head, Co. Cork.

Moving through eclectic landscapes at speed the central character rambles across the many rivers, roads, bridges, trails and railways of Ireland’s South East and South coast overcoming challenging terrain along the way. The video which was shot by the band themselves has amassed over 4k views in just its first 3 days.

Speaking of the video, the band say:

Tying in with the song’s message, the video subtly explores the idea of going to any length or distance for the ones you love. As much of a mental journey as physical, we feel the video and its central characters’ peculiar little odyssey personifies this experience in an interesting way, with some beautiful imagery of Ireland thrown in for good measure.

For nearly a decade late-night driving, couch surfing and service station dinners fuelled Corner Boy’s ever-evolving foot stomping ramble through the many pubs, clubs, rooms and ruins of every shape and size up and down Ireland and further afield.

As a result a collection of songs quietly willed their way into existence representative of this experience living and learning on the road and crafted by the associated peaks and troughs that come with the transient territory.

Fast forward to March 2020 and with the band’s 2002 Ford Transit van (Sheila) now indisposed a moment finally arrived for Corner Boy to record their debut album. Under the tutelage of producer Gavin Glass the band sought refuge in Orphan Studios and some 18 months later, emerged from the other side with a debut album in hand.

Very much the aural amalgam, the album explores in varying degrees combinations of folk, rock, traditional, bluegrass and alternative. Accompanied by heartfelt lyrics as earnest as they are resonant.

‘Blackstairs Winter Snow’, the first single from Corner Boy’s upcoming debut album, is out now with further details on the album to follow.

Michelle Grimes Returns with Pop track ‘Date Night’

Multi-instrumentalist (piano, accordion and guitar!) Michelle Grimes arrives on the scene with a voice, panache and Pop / R’n’B sensibility that instantly sets her apart from her musical peers. No stranger to the stage, Michelle has performed in Trafalgar Square to over 20,000 spectators as part of ‘Pride in London’, has sung for the King and Queen of Belgium as well as singing for The Taoiseach and the U.S Presidential party in June last year when they visited Ireland.

“Hailing from Limerick, Grimes has emerged as one of the country’s most promising pop acts of recent memory. After the release of her first single ‘Going, Going, Gone’, Hotpress nominated Grimes alongside the likes of Dermot Kennedy and Denise Chaila for Irish artist of the year and one to watch in 2021.

With a sound that’s already been compared to the likes of Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Dua Lipa, the Irish star-in-the-making has just announced her new single ‘Date Night’. Blending elements of pop and R n’ B, the song is the perfect soundtrack for your night out or getting ready for your night out.

Grimes comments: “I wrote this song at the height of lockdown. I just imagined my dream fantasy date night. I wanted to get dressed up and go out for dinner and cocktails”.

Michelle’s debut single wowed Irish radio and she went straight onto playlists across the country from Fm104, Live95, LMFM, Corks 96 and C103 as their Select Irish Artist of the Month as well as gracing the airwaves across BBC (Track of the week), 2FM, Spin and many more. Michelle smashed it at the overall International Radio Charts in Ireland landing on the Top 20 most played Artists on Irish radio alongside Ariana, Joel Corry, Dermot Kennedy, Dua Lipa and other stars. The track reached #3 in the breakers charts on Irish radio too.

The new single ‘Date Night’, is yet another pop anecdote from the rising artist.

Driven Snow Release Debut Single ‘Trying’

Driven Snow’s debut single, ‘Trying’ is available from all digital shops on 15 April – now what a good Friday that will be!!

Tired of forever being sounding boards for each other’s songs, Kieran and Emily have been working quietly on a collaborative musical venture for a few years now. With jobs and a growing family keeping them more than busy it had been a matter of snatching a few moments here and there and putting in late night weekend sessions.

Little by little Driven Snow began to emerge in the shape of a collection of songs that are at odds with, yet informed by, their collective musical outings (Kieran as a lynchpin of Delorentos and Emily as a vocalist with Republic of Loose and Stars On Fire). The pair decamped (with children, grandparents and all) to Donegal, taking their musical sketches up to Tommy McLaughlin’s Attica Studios (Villagers, S.O.A.K., Pillow Queens) and encouraging them to grow into simple, gentle tunes with a big heart and a common soul.

Driven Snow is now ready to take a step into the real world starting things off, gently with ‘Trying’…offering a tantalising hint of the yearning curiosity in their songwriting via a mix of classic harmonies housed in uncluttered acoustic and electronic sounds. With influences including Neil Young, Beach House, Cat Power, Scandinavian TV shows and fireside beers,  the realities of life as a musician in modern Ireland have never been more beautifully articulated.

For their new project Kieran and Emily have a simple aim: that Driven Snow will make music that they would listen to – music that means something.

New Release From Benedict Schlepper-Connolly ‘One Thing I Know’

One Thing I Know by Benedict Schlepper-Connolly was commissioned by the percussion-viola duo of Alex Petcu and Nathan Sherman in 2021, with funds provided by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. Combining floating viola pads over an intricate gamelan groove, the piece gently fuses ambiguous harmony with the propulsion of Berlin electronica.

The seed for the piece, says Schlepper-Connolly, was “the simple enjoyment of the low C# on the viola’s C string, a note with a characteristic all of its own.” He continues: “The work developed from here, continuing a childlike appreciation of individual sounds, adding in a custom assembly of percussion instruments, some of which were built by percussionist Alex Petcu himself.”

The title comes from the poem “Eines weiß ich” by Edeltraud Eckert, who was arrested for her opposition to the East German government in 1950, and who died in prison at the age of 24 in 1954. Schlepper-Connolly describes the poem as “absurdly optimistic for a better future.”

One Thing I Know is the second track featured on Totemic, the debut album from Petcu and Sherman, to be released April 28th on Ergodos Record Label. The record is testament to the very special synergy that exists between these two dynamic and sensitive musicians. A totem is a natural object believed to have spiritual significance, and there is certainly something elemental about the combination of percussion and viola. “The combination of percussion and viola offers unique timbres – evoking both the ancient and the otherworldly,” says percussionist Alex Petcu.

Violist Nathan Sherman adds: “This record was inspired by the phenomena that is the infinite range of human thought and emotion. The four works on this record represent our spirited, expressive, and heartfelt qualities, and our natural abilities to transcend, reflect and tap into the natural rhythmic flow that is life.”

To accompany the release of the album, the duo commissioned a bespoke music video for One Thing I Know by from filmmaker Néstor Romero Clemente. “Attempting to connect the video with the concept of the piece, I wanted to explore the idea of an imagined set of landscapes,” says Romero Clemente.

He continues: “I worked with an existing artificial intelligence to generate a series of new satellite images featuring places that do not exist on Earth. Benedict suggested arranging these across the video in a particular sequence that might evoke a hopeful recovery of nature, going from desert-like landscapes into lush rainforests. The artificial intelligence then analysed the waveform of the track and moved between these images reactively. Once the render was complete, I manipulated the video to get a more textural result that maybe resonates with the idea of a thought – something that could be but is not.”

Watch the official video for ‘One Thing I Know’ here:

Alex Petcu and Nathan Sherman will perform an album launch concert at New Music Dublin on 28 April: https://www.newmusicdublin.ie/totemic

Gary O’Neill Releases Debut EP ‘To Those I’ve Missed’

Emerging Irish Singer/Songwriter, Gary O’Neill is set to release his Debut EP ‘To Those I’ve Missed’.

He has had some great success with the first single ‘Petals’ which dropped last month and picked up a premiere in HotPress Magazine, features on RTE Entertainment, IMRO, Music From The Heart and many more as well as being Track of The Week with Martin Bridgeman at KCLR 96FM, plays on Tomorrow Radio, LMFM, FLIRT FM, Raidio Na Life and RTE 2XM.

The EP was recorded in Asta Kalapa Studios, Co Wexford and drops April 15th 2022.

Gary is a Kilkenny born singer-songwriter and producer, who’s live performances have been described as Intimate, Honest and Full Of Character’, his band recently played in Dublin’s workmans cellar to promote ‘Petals’ and The EP.

Gary started playing guitar at the young age of 14, thought by his father teaching him a few basic chords, Gary then went on to being entirely self-thought after and began writing his own music.

The Kilkenny singer-songwriter has spent his time growing up in numerous bands and finding his sound and style, speaking about his youth in music O’Neill states:

I played in different bands growing up, and wrote lots of music for my old teenage band; Alka Jessie. I think if I looked back on all of that work I would cringe at the thought of it. But we were so young. Everyone back then was a rock band, and this was our attempt at some progressive, folk outfit that cared more about what the story of a song could tell over the performance of it.”

Gary has released a few albums over the years but has since taken most stuff offline as he now gears to set out on his brand new musical journey and developing a new sound for himself.

“I was heavily influenced by John Martyn. He changed the landscape, for me, of what it meant to be a guitarist. Free formed, unusual open tunings- they were melodic and inimitable. He wavered the line between this wild, eccentric, comical entertainer – who was simultaneously a thoughtful, clever, passionate and romantic songwriter. The contrast was so intriguing to me.

I would’ve found similar inspiration with Ben Howard, David Gray- Joni Mitchell.  But my biggest influence, my reason for choosing to pursue music – is thanks to a Foy Vance concert I saw years ago. It embodied everything I would grow to love about writing and performing. Swinging from pure intimacy, to hilarity – having a whole room in the palm of your hands. It was such an emblematic, evocative, monumental moment for me; it kick-started my whole pursuit of music.”

‘To Those I’ve Missed’ is a body of work that explores friendships, relationships from the past, present and future. Time, especially within the last couple of years – can drift us apart. But the spirit of those we love and miss is boundless, and can always be acknowledged in the appearance of memory. The EP drops April 15th 2022.

Petals
A song about living abroad, missing family. Petals is an ode my mother and grandmother and their hopes that I’d return home someday. “It’s not Ireland when you’re gone” they told me once over the phone.

Bordeaux

An encounter, a story about a man falling for a French woman, fantasizing about the idea of moving to the countryside- but not certain if it’s entirely for love, or rather to escape his own circumstance.

Jasmine
A love letter, a story telling us that regardless of what happens in the future, the fondness of love & companionship will live in the perpetuity of memory.
