Alt-pop duo ELKIN return with their new single ‘Tokens’, providing an uplifting and summery anthem which showcases their unique sound. Alongside the lush tones of their harmonies, a pulsing bassline provides the backbone to the buoyant alt-pop production, which bends into shimmering folk textures. The talented duo provide irresistible melodies and poetic lyricism, singing of how music has the power to connect you closer with loved ones: I like collecting tokens of our loving, leave them in playlists, one day rediscovering… they croon in the dreamy chorus. Crafting a refreshing soundscape, ELKIN are en route to achieving big things on the indie pop scene.
To us ‘Tokens’ is a celebration of all the memories we’ve made in our early 20s,” ELKIN reveal. We wanted to capture the nostalgia you feel when a song comes on and reminds you of the person who first showed it to you. This song is an homage to all the friends we’ve made along the way.
Ellen and Carla were writing and singing together from the age of 15 before taking their music to a new level as ELKIN. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Joni Mitchell the duo began writing and performing folk-pop, but it wasn’t until they began working with producer lullahush that ELKIN blended their love of thought-provoking folk lyrics with fierce alt-pop production. ELKIN made their mark in 2019 with singles ‘Green Eyes’, ‘Cut My Tongue’ and ‘DIY’, as well as releasing ‘Fall So Easy’, a collaboration with Cork producer 1000 Beasts.
The self-managed duo have received growing support with ELKIN being selected to perform at showcases such as Whelan’s Ones to Watch, Music Cork and Ireland Music Week. 2020 saw O’Mahony and Ryan continuing this momentum with new release ‘Win Win’ alongside performances at OutPut Showcase in Belfast and Other Voices Music Trail, Ballina. With the Covid pandemic putting a halt to their other plans, the duo spent the rest of the year writing and recording a collection of singles, ANTHOLOGY, which will be released across 2021. This will be followed by an EP release funded by the FMC Recording Stimulus Grant.
