The West Limerick Singing Club Garry McMahon 9th Annual Singing Weekend will take place this year from October 20th-22nd in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick.

Garry McMahon R.I.P.
Garry McMahon, Solicitor, Footballer, song writer, composer and poet died on the 5th March 2008. The late Garry McMahon was born in August 1937, the eldest son of Kitty McMahon nee Ryan of Cashel Co Tipperary and Bryan McMahon of Listowel, Co. Kerry. Garry was a talented footballer having played for the Kerry Minors in 1955. He continued to play for Kerry, winning two All Ireland medals in 1959 and 1962. He was a talented goal scorer and still holds the record for the fastest goal in a senior All Ireland football final, 31 seconds into the 1962 final against Roscommon. He also played minor hurling with Kerry.
After qualifying as a Solicitor, he moved to Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick and opened his own practice, Patrick G. McMahon Solicitors. He was joined in business by his brother Owen, also a Solicitor and continued to practice law until his death.
Garry was a renowned singer of sean nos and ballads plus a supporter of the Irish language. He wrote two Masses in Irish which have been broadcast on RTE. One of them has since been translated into English.
He also toured the USA with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. He penned many a fine song and ballad and recorded a CD “The Songman” of his own songs in the recent months before his death. Garry donated this CD to raise money for the new hydrotherapy unit at St Gabriel’s Centre, Dooradoyle.
The songs reflect Garry McMahon’s life interests, and he freely admits the influence of his late father, author, teacher and broadcaster, Bryan McMahon.
One of his songs, ‘The Land of the Gael’, has already been recorded by a number of other artists. Garry was a regular visitor at the West Limerick Singing Club monthly singing sessions in The Ramble Inn Bar, Abbeyfeale on the first Friday of every month.
