A Litany of Failures

March 30 @ 4:00 pm - March 31 @ 10:30 pm

A Litany Of Failures

In conjunction with IMRO and the Button Factory, we’re delighted to announce details of an A Litany Of Failures weekender set to take place over March 30th & 31st. The two day event will act as a fundraiser for Volume V of the compilation series, which has been described as “indispensable listening for any Irish music fan with a modicum of taste” (Irish Times). Musical performances will come from previous Litany alumni, The Bonk, M(h)aol, Search Results, Junk Drawer, Oh Boland and ManTua across the Button Factory Main Room and Crowbar Terrace. Saturday night’s concert will be preceded by a panel discussion on production, hosted by Zara Hedderman (Totally Dublin/RTÉ Arena), and featuring three of Ireland’s finest producers, John ‘Spud’ Murphy (Lankum/Black MIDI), Chris W Ryan (Just Mustard/Robocobra Quartet) and Jamie Hyland (Gilla Band/Mhaol), plus DJs.

A History Of Failures

A Litany Of Failures began with the release of Volume 1 in 2016. This EP, released on cassette, featured Junk Drawer, Oh Boland, Shrug Life and That Snaake, and was launched with an Irish tour that summer. This release created the template that would later be expanded upon in Volume II, III & IV, which have featured a total of 60 acts. Each volume is a double vinyl compilation, and includes the likes of Robocobra Quartet, The Bonk, Silverbacks, Problem Patterns, Junior Brother, Elaine Howley, Myles Manley, Cherym, Post Punk Podge, and many more.

The project was conceived as a way that DIY and independent artists could come together, collaborate and support each other in trying to take their own snapshot of the Irish music community, to be preserved for posterity – a “rising tide lifts all boats” mentality – while creating a quality product that could be deemed “Export Ready” in the modern Music-Biz™ parlance.

The Lineup Of Failures

Each of our speakers has been involved with the compilation in some capacity up until now. Musician & producer John ‘Spud’ Murphy performs with ØXN, Percolator, and has produced and sculpted the live sound of Lankum over the better part of the last decade, as well as producing Cavalcade, the acclaimed second album from Black MIDI. Chris Ryan, as well as contributing tracks with jazz-punk outfit Robocobra Quartet & solo project Sorbet, has produced Just Mustard, New Dad, plus innumerable Litany tracks from the likes of Junk Drawer, Careerist and more. Jamie Hyland is known for her work as bassist/producer/vocalist with M(h)aol, as well as being a recording & mastering engineer, and performer with the likes of Gilla Band, A Lethal Black Ooze, and Clara Tracey.

Our artists across the weekend include one of Ireland’s most forward-thinking live & recorded outfits, Phil Christie-led experimental act The Bonk, whose 2023 LP Greater Than Or Equal To The Bonk topped numerous year-end lists. Viscerally raw post-punk quartet m(h)aol join them on the bill, having recently signed and re-released debut album Attachment Styles in November with Merge Records – they promise fresh cuts for their first Irish dates in some time. One of Ireland’s fastest-rising young acts, indie trio Search Results’ debut album Information Blip saw them explode onto everyone’s radar last year as a fully-formed entity all of their own. We’ll have a set from Litany co-founders, Belfast indie-psych instrument-swappers Junk Drawer, who have just finished up their second album with Chris Ryan at the Meadow Studio. Their Phase 1 Litany cohorts, Tuam garage power-pop Oh Boland will join them, with promises of a third album on its way very soon, as well as Cork-based artist Elaine Malone’s drone project, ManTua.
