Emerging Alt-Folk Duo Arrow In The Sky set to unleash fierce new single ‘The Girl Who Thought She Was A Bird’ June 21st

“A new single from Arrow In The Sky’s upcoming album to release later this year. ‘Fire’ is psychedelic and genre-diffusing, with influences ranging from punk to rock to even some folk.”
–     Hot Press.

“As anticipation builds for the full album release, ‘Time Of Need’ offers a tantalizing taste of what’s to come from this talented Irish outfit.”
–     Pure M Zine

Arrow In The Sky are a dynamic duo of multi-instrumentalists, Conor McCauley and Brian Murphy, hailing from the heart of Ireland. Known for their unique sound, they have previously released two acclaimed mini-albums: Do What Thou Wilt (2009) and Winter’s Requiem (2011). Their songwriting partnership creates a distinct world of rapture and sorrow, blending traditional instruments with an unconventional approach.

Arrow In The Sky’s live performances are as captivating as their studio work, featuring looping guitars, blazing mandolins, and a suitcase-turned-bass drum. This innovative style has made them a favourite opening act for renowned Irish bands like Villagers, The Stunning, and Duke Special.

Their previous singles such as ‘Time of Need’ and ‘Fire’ which has nearly 9k streams on Spotify, picked up support in the likes of Hot Press, Pure M Zine, Rolling Stone En Espanol, The Beat, IMRO Radio Nova, RTÉ 2XM, LMFM  and more and their single ‘My Sunshine’ has gathered nearly 16k streams on Spotify making the duo a hot one to watch!

‘The Girl Who Thought She Was A Bird’ is the next release from their upcoming highly anticipated album, the single is set for release on June 21st and the band hopes to gather more press and radio support to continue building their momentum.

Fans can also experience the song live as Arrow in the Sky at their upcoming gig in Clarke’s Mullingar on the 19th of July.

‘The Girl Who Thought She Was a Bird’, the latest track from Arrow In The Sky showcases the band’s signature blend of lyrical depth and haunting melodies, capturing the essence of human longing and resilience. Originally written during Ireland’s last recession and mass youth exodus, the song’s poignant themes of aspiration and escape remain strikingly relevant today. This modern-day emigration song attempts to capture the enduring human desire for freedom and transformation amidst economic hardship.

The song narrates the story of a young woman dreaming of escape and transformation, set against the juxtaposition of urban sprawl and natural beauty. With vivid imagery of “glass canyon corridors” and a “lion’s roar” sunrise, the song immerses listeners in a world where hope and reality intertwine.

To work on the upcoming single the band brought in their good friend, Leeds violin virtuoso Kieran O’Malley. R’n’B is brought by punk rockabilly double-bass man Tim Fernley and rhythmic powerhouse Michael Cronin on drums.

Rising Waterford folk artist Tadhg Williams has released his next single ‘Endgame’

Following a sold out headline show in the Cobblestone on Sunday 9th June, and critical acclaim for his latest two singles, ‘Nixer’ and ‘Frank Edwards’, rising Waterford folk artist Tadhg Williams has released his next single ‘Endgame’.

Endgame is a bit of a funny song in that it was actually a challenge. I was seeing a therapist at the time and I had experienced a break up. I found it hard to express myself after that break up. I couldn’t cry. I felt like stone. The therapist challenged me to write a song suggesting that it could act as the emotional release I needed. She was right – it kind of poured out of me and looking back on the lyrics now, three years later, it’s more of a song about loneliness and isolation. I think it’s probably the most honest song I’ve ever written.”

The cover art features Williams’ great-grandparents, James Morrissey and Mary Flavin. “When I was digging around for cover art for these tracks, I was looking through my own family photos and came across this one. They’re actually in their mid-50s in this photo, which is a bit mad given they both look about 70, but there’s a lot of character in the image. And I think it’s a nice antithesis to a song about loneliness and isolation, to have the cover art as two people who I personally know were together until the day they died.”

Recently described as “a luminary in the contemporary folk music landscape, poised to leave an indelible mark on Dublin’s vibrant cultural tapestry” by Pure M Magazine, Williams has earned widespread critical acclaim for his most recent two singles, including plays on RTÉ Radio 1, Today FM, FM104, Beat 102 103, iRadio and Radio Nova, and articles in RTÉ and Hot Press Magazine.

Since Williams released ‘The Summer Song’ in 2021, he has worked to develop his stage craft, supporting a variety of acts from Mary Black and The Stunning to Kingfishr and Niamh Regan, and has completed an undergraduate degree in history – a huge source of inspiration for his songwriting.

In 2023, a small Irish tour road-tested new songs alongside a band, before going into the studio with producer, Geoff Warner-Clayton (Gavin James, Kingfishr, Driven Snow), to further develop these songs. They have been mastered by iconic producer John Reynolds (Sinéad O’Connor, Damien Dempsey).

“This is quite an excellent song… There’s something sort of very poetic about it. What an epic war time song it is.” – Kieran McGuinness, Radio Nova on ‘Frank Edwards’

“I was blown away with it. His storytelling in this is absolutely phenomenal.” – Nessy Monaghan, RTÉ 2XM on ‘Frank Edwards’

“Tadhg is a poet who conjures songs both humorous and moving, rich in humanity.” – Junior Brother

“Catchy and relatable.” – Claire Beck, Today FM on ‘Nixer’

Sligo-based Austrian violinist/singer/yodeller and composer Claudia Schwab announces new album ‘Went to Walk’

Following the release of her single ‘Went To Walk’ in May 2023, Sligo-based Austrian violinist/singer/yodeller and composer Claudia Schwab sets out to launch her third solo album of the same title, coming July 7th.

‘Went to Walk’ video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3XomKobGUE

Born out of a solitary forest, the seaside, and mountain dwellings during the periods of lock down, Schwab’s album marks a return to the origins of her composing practices: a world of sound that she could create, and retreat to, entirely on her own.

Never shy of crossing borders between genres, traditions, and conventions, the album presents an introspective body of folk-inspired songs with experimental elements. Amalgamating aspects of the worlds of Irish, Austrian and Indian Classical music traditions, the compositions are interwoven with sound samples collected at home in Sligo, as well as during arts residencies in Crete, Austria, India and Sri Lanka. Amidst the sounds of a whistling kettle, wooden drawers, a coffee cup, nuclear alarms or Indian prayers, we hear of unfinished love stories, the yearning to be left alone, diverse “what if” scenarios of re-crafting our lifestyles, or reflections on the startling lack of being present to our own lives.

Featuring guest musicians Jos Kelly (keys) and Matija Solce (accordion) on the title track “Went To Walk”, as well as Michael McGoldrick (flute/whistle) on the avantgarde yodel-trad experiment “Jodlphase”, the remainder of this delicate body of sounds is written for an intimate solo set up of violin, vocals, piano and loops.

Today, Claudia shares the second taster of what’s to come with new song ‘Ois Z’Vü’. Speaking on the song, she says “What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? My strategy is this: I go to bed. Don’t call me, leave me my peace. These days they were beautiful, but now I’m going to lie down. Sometimes I am missing a bit of time to breathe and dream; that moment has come Now.”

Written in her native Austrian dialect, the song features a rhythm collage made out of sound samples such as a wooden drawer, a crunched spinach bag, samples of space and nuclear alarms, her front door, a bulldog attack on her neighbour’s tree, and her granny’s old pendulum.

Blue Fish Diamond to release a new single about the loss of a loved one on Friday 21st June

Dublin based folk band Blue Fish Diamond will release a new single called The 1980s on Friday 21st June, which will be available on all major streaming platforms from that date.

About The 1980s
The 1980s is about the loss of a loved one and a longing to see them again. The opening line “I’ve been spending my days trying to find a way to the 1980s” captures the finite and irreversible nature of death. In the form of a nostalgic ode, the song reminisces about days spent together. A desire to return to the past culminates in acceptance that this cannot happen with the line “Long is the road and I don’t know if I’m ever going to make it”. The artwork for the song was designed to convey a sense of absence and the emptiness of grief.

The 1980s was produced by Gavin Glass at Orphan Recording Studios and it was written by Jim Murphy. The artwork for the single was designed by Cathal MacHale.

Blue Fish Diamond are a Dublin based folk band who have been described by Hot Press magazine as “a bit of a super-group for those in the know in the capital”. The band was founded in 2016 by Jim Murphy, who in 2014 left a 25 year career in the insurance industry to pursue music full-time.

In 2018, the band released their debut album From Dark to Light and followed this up in 2021 with their second album Frozen Stars on the Night. Their main influences include Leonard Cohen, Tom Petty, R.E.M., The Beatles and Paul Simon.

Blue Fish Diamond’s music has been played on radio stations across Ireland including on national radio and they have also caught the attention of radio presenters in various European countries, the United States, Canada and Australia. One of their songs (Salvation Call) was included on a global retail playlist throughout 2019 and for part of 2020.

They have played at many Dublin music venues including Whelans, The Workman’s Club and The Grand Social and at venues in Kilkenny, Cork, Mayo, Wicklow, Monaghan and Cavan. In 2018, they played at Electric Picnic and they have also played at music festivals in Dublin, Cork and Monaghan.

‘Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers’ release their second single ‘Damaged Goods’

‘Seán Finn and the Late Bloomers’ released their second single ‘Damaged Goods’ on the 16th of June. Helmed by frontman Seán Finn, the group have become known for their quirky stage antics and vibrant musicality. The group have frequented many of London’s notable live music venues such as the Spice of Life, Soho and Toulouse Lautrec, Kennington.

‘Damaged Goods’ is a wistful piano ballad with an endearing melody, heart-tugging lyrics, and a warm instrumental backdrop. The song ponders the hardships faced by young women as they leave home and face the world on their own. Despite the heavy topic, the narrator assures them that one day their prince will come. The reflective songwriter had this to say about song:

‘This tune started off as a simple piano ballad, but when I brought it to the band they really added a sense of gravitas to the track. The arrangement came together beautifully on this one, with smooth basslines, tasteful drum fills and a soaring flute melody that ties it all  together. It’s one of those songs that I’m surprised I wrote myself, but absolutely delighted to say it’s one of my own.’

With international dates on the horizon, the group are rolling out their debut project this summer. ‘Damaged Goods is available in all the usual places now.

Niall Colfer releases new Single ‘Now You Know’ – a mix of Americana, rock n’ roll, soul and folk

Niall Colfer releases music that is a mix of Americana, rock n’ roll, soul and folk.

Former member of the critically acclaimed Wexford band Salthouse, in 2009 Niall released his first solo album, entitled Finds, on legendary independent Dublin label 1969 Records. This was followed by a period of gigging to promote the album with acts such as The Proclaimers (who he supported on a memorable night in Dublin’s National Concert Hall) and The House of Love. When on tour with American Music Club singer, Mark Eitzel, Niall was introduced to the man who would provide the sonic template for the new songs he had been writing. This was Sean Coleman, a producer and multi-instrumentalist who had spent two decades in San Francisco recording and playing with such artists as Eels, Kelly Stolz, American Music Club and members of Wilco. The two began to record together soon after.

The first fruits of these sessions was released in the form of an EP entitled Before the night goes in 2014 with an album released under the Dovecote moniker, in 2016. This eponymous album received radio play on all the major Irish stations (including the prestigious ‘Album of the Week’ on RTE Radio 1), as well being the focus of features in Hot Press, the Irish Independent and the Arena show on RTE Radio 1. This was followed by invitations to play the famous Other Voices festival in Dingle and the Windmill Lane Sessions.

In 2015 Niall’s song ‘After all that’s happened’ featured heavily in the film ‘Poison Pen’, which was screened at the film festivals in Ireland, Europe (Luxembourg) and the USA (New York, Virginia, Chicago).

Originally from Wexford, Niall lives in Dublin and is an archaeologist. Never one to rush creativity, Niall has now written his next album, which will be released in Autumn 2024. The second song to be released from the upcoming album is ‘Now You Know’. This was recorded and produced by Sean Coleman at Old County Studios, Dublin, and features Graham Hopkins (The Frames, Glen Hansard, Dolores O’Riordan, Therapy?), on drums with Niall and Sean sharing the rest of the instrumentation duties. According to Niall this song is a meditation on storytelling, honestys and groove.
