‘Saga’ – new cinematic track and video from Pearse McGloughlin from ‘Keg’

‘Saga’, the new song from Pearse McGloughlin is a tale drawn from times of instability. It sings to a cosmic backdrop and of urban odysseys. Its nouvelle vague styled video, shot in Tasmania and directed by Ursula Woods, reflects the inherent dreaminess of the track and channels a cinema vérité aesthetic. It features beautiful strings by Pearse’s long-time collaborator Justin Grounds and drums from Stephen Kiernan.

I wrote this song because I wanted to explore how perspective can help us deal with turbulence and calamity. It was a way of putting sense on a strange historical moment and seeing tragedy up close.

‘Saga’ is taken from Pearse’s sixth studio album ‘Keg’ produced by Julie McLarnon (Jeffrey Lewis, The Vaselines) in the famed Analogue Catalogue studios in Northern Ireland and has been played by BBC6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq amongst others.

The video for ‘Saga’ was directed by Ursula Woods, based in Tasmania. Maria Blackwell who has previously sung on Pearse’s ‘Twine EP’ and ‘In Movement’ appears in the video, lending a hypnotic and faraway mood to the striking visuals.

Director Ursula Woods on ‘Saga’:
”I took an experimental approach to shooting this loose narrative. It was shot (mainly) on a Bolex and also a Canon Scoopic with Kodak double X film, it was DIY hand processed and then digitised in Melbourne. The piece was shot in Kingston Tasmania and features artist Maria Blackwell a mutual friend of mine and Pearse’s. Of course this connection and distance was really the inspiration behind the images as well as the song and lyrics. I was drawn to Saga with its cinematic, dreamy feels”.

The video for Saga will launch on February 16th 2024 and is available on all digital retailers.

a musical artist and wordsmith who crafts songs of exquisite beauty and depth (for Keg)… Nenesbutler

this is pop-folk goldsmithery of the highest order … Between strings as precise as they are loose and vocals as inhabited as they are celestial, the journey is overwhelming… This songwriting is both deeply rooted and profoundly singular, giving it that long-lasting breadth that is so precious (for Keg)…. NYSSA shares new album ahead of SXSW and The Great Escape performances

Bacchus meets Blondie in NYSSA’s  Shake Me Where I’m Foolish , out today on Six Shooter Records  to mark Imbolc. The experience of listening to Shake Me Where I’m Foolish  is one of total synthesis, a collapse of boundaries between centuries, a conjuring of wildness from within.

From Montreal to Dublin to Berlin in the fall of 2023, and to SXSW  and The Great Escape  this spring, the Toronto-based artist’s travels mirror the geographic, mythological and polytheistic touchstones of her sophomore collection. Transportive and borderless, NYSSA’s songs ride the four winds to distant lands.

Named for a line in a poem by Chicago free verse poet Carl Sandburg, ‘Baby Song of the Four Winds,’ Shake Me Where I’m Foolish  invokes rebirth, freshness and freedom. The north wind, a cold plunge, a grotto of pleasure, going out beyond the breakwater, a night run amok: There are ways to break loose.

From the first track, ‘The Initiate,’  NYSSA opens the wardrobe to a Punk Rock Narnia, an otherworld of her own design where ’70s riffs carry ancient myths. Buckle up for ‘The Mystery,’  a Cars-esque retelling of the secret rites of the cult of Demeter. Stumble over an imagined Jersey shore in ‘Good Kind of Bad,’  a song that makes no apologies for its irresistibly irresponsible advice. Wallow exquisitely in ‘Creature 2 Creature,’  a song that makes a hero of anyone who has refused to feel better, à la Magnetic Fields’ ‘I Don’t Want To Get Over You.’

Will you catch your breath or lose your grip on reality as the tension builds in the penultimate song ‘My Gemini,’ a voyage through deep subconscious imagery and intuition. A dream both lucid and lurid, this imaginary travelog provides the artistic, thematic, epic heart of the album. The song hurtles headlong into the nightosphere as NYSSA goes where she must, unafraid to leave behind what doesn’t serve the call of her wild. With its fiery finish, ‘My Gemini’ erupts, its chaos volcanic, ancient and cleansing.

Toronto pagan-punk-poet NYSSA has put her hands into the lion’s mouth, gathering her performing and songwriting powers to conjure the unruly energy of rock n’ roll. Out from under fear’s thumb, NYSSA now sings about wild things, old gods, romance-beyond-borders, and the exorcism of trauma. She has quested, and she has returned.

The goal is fevered connection, a ritual-sense of music as communal release. NYSSA keens and wails and brings her audience along with her to a place of deep feeling, movement, and joy. Her lyrics are poetic and clear, lunar, eerie, angry; NYSSA’s voice is the strong container for all of it. As Dionysus would want it, over-abundance is the way. Her rapturous music has been praised and played by Irish tastemakers like RTÉ 2fm Newstalk GoldenPlec , Buzz.ie, Entertainment.ie , and others.

Guided by the incantation and invocation of the three C’s: Collaboration, Choreo, Covenhood!, NYSSA’s sound and stories run deep into ancient mythos, Celtic lore and back through our modern idols. Re-swaggering, re-wilding hyper-masc night moves and magick hips (think Jagger, Mink Deville, Danzig), NYSSA’s magnetic, elastic ways make satyrs of us all.

Long-listed for the 2021 Polaris prize  for her debut solo album Girls Like Me , NYSSA’s sophomore album, Shake Me Where I’m Foolish , is out now via  Six Shooter Records.

Goodbye Polar Bear- is the new single from this eagerly awaited new album – Way Out West- which  was recorded and produced by acclaimed producer Bill Shanley and this second single is due for  release February 2nd on Cauldron Records.

Goodbye Polar Bear is in essence a song about learning to block out the negative thoughts in your own head, the constant niggle, the voice in your ear that tells you should be doing better or you be could doing more, while you actually feel like you’re going in reverse with no semblance of control over the direction or path ahead.

I wrote it in the depths of winter on a cold morning in January after a heavy snowfall and the deep white blanket of snow outside my window mirrored the heavy weather within and inspired the title.

Most days the easiest way for me to clear my mind is to write down my thoughts on the page and not to lean too heavily on past exploits.

“It’s not a given that it will be a constant but it is for me living  in the moment through the power of song. That’s what I have known and that’s who I am.” – Stephen Gormley (singer/songwriter of Moon Looks On)

Gavin James offers support to up & coming Irish musicians on European Tour

Three have announced that they are taking their City Stages initiative beyond Ireland and into mainland Europe through a partnership with one of Ireland’s biggest music stars, Gavin James.

Up to four artists will have the opportunity to join him on his current European tour which includes shows in Amsterdam and Paris. The first two artists announced to join Gavin James are Gemma Cox and Rachel Grace. They will now join Gavin James in Amsterdam to open for him at the beautiful Vondel Church in Amsterdam on 8th and 9th February. Two more artists will be announced for Gavin’s Paris shows soon.

Three’s City Stages provided up and coming artists across Ireland with the opportunity to perform on some of the country’s biggest stages. Last February, Kildare musician Tia Burke was chosen to open for Mercury Music Prize nominated, Self Esteem at her sold out 3Olympia Theatre show.

In September, eight more City Stages performers were given an incredible opportunity to come together for a special collaborative performance at Electric Picnic, playing to a capacity crowd on the Three Music stage. The collective consisted of Arthur Valentine, Kestine, Korey Power, Leah Moran, 2 Time Charlie, Salamay, Liliana and Bukky, who reimagined hits by their favourite artists from Miley Cyrus and 50 Cent to Eminem and Whitney Houston before being joined by a very special guest in main stage singer Cian Ducrot for a group rendition of his #1 hit record “I’ll Be Waiting”.

Speaking on the announcement, Gavin James commented: “I’ve been following Three’s City Stages last year and have loved seeing the great new musical talent Ireland has and I wanted to play my part in helping them with Three’s City Stages initiative by bringing them on tour with me and hopefully opening a few doors both at home and abroad.”

Aislinn O’Connor, Marketing Director, Three added: “City Stages was a runaway success last year and provided some incredible opportunities to some of the best up and coming musical talent across the country, taking them from busking on the streets of Ireland to the big stages at 3Olympia and Electric Picnic. We have been so enthused by the response and partnering with Gavin James brings City Stages to life in a new way and we hope to not only see these City Stages acts perform on Ireland’s biggest stages in the coming years but on the European stage too”.

To date, over 500 musicians have applied to play and perform on a Three City Stage around the country. The initiative offers a new generation of musicians, currently learning their trade by busking on Ireland’s city streets, an opportunity to progress their careers by offering them the opportunity to perform on the biggest stages in the country.

As the naming rights partner at two of Irelands biggest venues, 3Arena & 3Olympia – Three is giving aspiring artists more opportunities to play on the biggest stages in the country and beyond.

City Stages is part of Three’s commitment to the brand’s All For Music campaign, helping to support and nurture new and exciting musical talent in Ireland through live experiences. This support is channelled to help these aspiring artists to grow their careers from the smallest stages to the largest in the country. Three City Stages initiative is supported by AIM Ireland.

‘All For Music’ is built around the collective experience of the enjoyment we get from music, the way we connect with people and how it is celebrated. This depth of connection is the reason that we love it so much, both as individuals and as a brand. This togetherness is why Three is ‘all in’ on music.

Interested artists can sign up to City Stages now at 3.ie/CityStages. To be the first to hear of all the exclusive music news from Three, join the conversation on social @threeireland using #3AllForMusic.

Rachel Grace has quietly established herself as one of Ireland’s most promising songwriters, and at only twenty-one years of age. Her music is a melting pot of soul and pop with a vocal style that captures the mood of generations past, echoing the soulful voices of artists like Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse and Eva Cassidy.

Having been writing and performing in the music scene from the age of twelve, the Ruby Sessions regular has played some of Ireland’s favourite venues and festivals and supported acts such as Emma Langford, Jack Lukeman, Paddy Casey, The Drifters and Wallis Bird. She was chosen as one of Hotpress Magazine’s ‘Hot For 2023’ artists and is currently in the process of recording her debut album, set for release late this year. Her eagerly awaited next single, ‘Lately’, will be out in March.

Twin Headed Wolf announce their long-awaited album ‘Altarwise’

An album lost in time. A lost treasure for the archives, Twin Headed Wolf’s album ‘Altarwise’ illustrates the first creative impulse of Branwen and Julie Kavanagh. Indeed it is the first album they ever made. All of their dreams, ideals, and ideas are contained within the ritual worlds of each song. They will share it with the world February 29th, 2024.

The first track from the album is out today (Thursday 1st February). ‘The Black Keys’: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ol944rL8FlA

Speaking about the song, the twins say:

“Branwen liked to take apart pianos. The twins wrote this song in the rain after the NCAD Valentines Ball while wearing their mothers’ dresses from the 80’s. The song fell out of their mouths.”

Twin Headed Wolf have been experimenting for many years with Time Travel. They trained in their late teens and early twenties by attempting to create music outside of the boundaries of time and bleeding into the otherworld. They played with timelessness, incorporating forgotten worlds into their music and inventing contexts of their very own, outside of timely reference points.

Being twice once and once twice as twins they seemed to have an untamed grasp on the fabric of time, and it began to behave erratically.  Ergo, an album that they began in 2013 was balanced too delicately on the threshold of years and kept disappearing and reappearing with just enough time to work on it up until 2017. Once the masters were finalised it was sent to 29/2/2024, 11 years after its birth.

The album is a collection of windows into the worlds of songs. The themes surround experimental darkness lifted by ethereal blood harmonies and a host of sounds and whirring experiments that cannot be discerned or divorced from the ritual of each song.  Indeed, one might think they hear anything from bones to bicycles to saws to clay pots or strange objects that have been given a musical voice, but all are effortlessly woven into the greater whole of the song.

‘Altarwise’ is about coming to terms with humanness and material reality when this experience does not match that of two beings who were raised in the heart of a dreamscape. They have learned how to hold hands with the muses and walk a strange path that takes them closer to the dream while reckoning with the darkness and managing to be being playful and light-hearted as they go. These songs are about spirit and the hot fire of its refinement.

The twins were once described as two little girls being playful about dark things. This is a place where their twin spirits gave the most of themselves. It is their favourite thing. ‘Altarwise’ is and will be the only official Twin Headed Wolf album. They hope you enjoy it.

250 limited edition ‘Altarwise’ vinyl will be available February 29th. Pre-order on Bandcamp: https://twinheadedwolf.bandcamp.com/

The Black Keys – Lyrics

Don’t come looking for me
In these rainy skies
If you’re hunting me down
Well I’ll be in disguise
I can’t undo the web of your lies
I can’t unstick all of these droning flies

On your piano
I am the black keys
I am your fever I am your disease
And when you exhale I am the wheeze
I am your vice and you’ll never be free

I hear the click clack of your shoes on the stones
Pulled by a thread you just can’t be alone
No matter how much you scrape scratch and moan
The one that you want will never be home

You tear the skin until it bleeds
You’ll find your ego among the weeds</em
This old sin you seem to need
Will rot and starve you
Just like a bad seed

Danny Carroll shares new single ‘Golden Hour’ and announces debut album ‘I Am The Cheese’ coming March 1st

Danny Carroll is one of the brightest, most precocious talents we have
Cian Ó Cíobháin, RTE RnaG

Danny Carroll’s lyrics are some of the smartest, wittiest that the country has to offer”.
Will Murphy, The Thin Air

“This idiosyncratic first outing for Carroll introduces us to an intriguing songwriter we’ll be hoping to hear much more from” – Andrew Lambert, Headstuff

Part of the Dublin music scene for years, Danny Carroll is co-curator of A Litany Of Failures compilation series showcasing independent artists from across Ireland.  Having gigged in various projects, he’s opened for kindred spirits such as Jeffrey Lewis and Pavement guitarist Spiral Stairs before the time came to work on his debut solo album. Enlisting the help of Belfast based producer Chris W. Ryan (New Dad, Just Mustard, Robocobra Quartet), the two developed songs with a playful, anything goes approach, with Carroll’s songs likened to softer touchstones of indie rock – Silver Jews, Jonathan Richman, and Lee Hazlewood.

In January 2023, he released his debut solo single ‘Affection’. Hailed as “a compelling re-introduction” (The Last Mixed Tape) and an “idiosyncratic first outing” (Headstuff) the track went on to receive coverage on RTÉ Radio 1 and Hot Press among others.

In September, Danny shared his second solo offering ‘Cheesemonger’, a “wonky indie-folk epic” (Irish News), as part of the compilation A Litany Of Failures: Volume IV, which has already been hailed by the Irish Times as “indispensable listening for any Irish music fan with a modicum of taste”. The track was accompanied by a striking, macabre video made by Iarla McKeon (KhakiKid, Big Sleep) and quickly followed by tours with like-minded counterpart Laurie Shaw and the Scottish singer-songwriter Hamish Hawk. (Video: https://youtu.be/UMkBgUMw-7c)

Ahead of his debut album ‘I Am The Cheese’, to be released on vinyl and digital on 1st March, comes the lush, effervescent single ‘Golden Hour’ (out 1st February). A wholesome offering driven by classical guitar, lapsteel and melodica, the song is one of quiet infatuation and wide-eyed wonder.

Golden Hour video (Dir: Níamh Barry): https://youtu.be/jI723lv1De8

For the video, Danny enlisted the help of acclaimed photographer and videographer Níamh Barry. Playing with Golden Hour’s theme of rose-tinted romance, it stars Fianna Nolan as its deluded protagonist.

Speaking of the new single, Danny comments I’m quite proud of the arrangement on this track. There’s a lot of experimentation with lapsteel and melodica through a Leslie organ speaker and that creates a suitably floaty feeling in keeping with the sentiment of the song. Lyrically it’s very much about giddy infatuation and maybe the best attempt I’ve made at an unapologetic love song. Bonus points for anyone who spots the Wilco pun in there.”

‘I Am The Cheese’ Tracklisting

  1. Pep Talk
  2. Golden Hour
  3. Pimlico
  4. Conventions Of Cool
  5. Match Of The Day
  6. February

Lavengro release brand new single ‘Lie’

February 2nd sees Derry band Lavengro, Gareth Borrow, Dave & James Healy and Jordan Edgar, release their brand-new single ‘Lie’.   The 1st single from Lavengro’s upcoming EP, ‘Lie’ reflects their youthful contagious energy and sets out their ambitions for 2024.

Comprised of catchy, driving melodies and polished with honest relatable lyrics. Written from personal experiences, ‘Lie’  a fusion of soulful melodies, thought-‘provoking lyrics, and a distinctive sonic signature is a testament to Lavengro’s evolving sound.

Tipped by industry insiders as the next big thing, their journey from the council estates of Derry to the studio exemplifies the transformative power of passion and hard work.  With a unique blend of raw authenticity and undeniable talent, Lavengro are on the brink of something enormous.

Lie, a song with undeniable singalong ability, reflects a darker underlying narrative of denial & vulnerability that comes from knowing a relationship is over, because of your own choices and actions, but rather than face the truth, you’d rather live a Lie.

Speaking about ‘Lie’ Gareth Borrow said:  “The song is about being caught in a labyrinth of denial and guilt because someone you love wants to end the relationship because you betrayed their trust. You know it’s your own fault, but you don’t want to acknowledge. Lie is about your mind using hopeful illusions to protect the heart from being shattered.”

Having impressed Irish radio over the past year, including consistent playlists on Cool FM & Q Radio, Lavengro have also scored national radio playlist positions and have been tipped as future headliners by BBC Introducing, with their tracks appearing across BBC Radio 1.

Defined by BBC ATL as a band that are
“Infectious, uplifting, dripping in harmonies and primed for sing along moments

And while they have been busy touring with Gavin James and pop star Lea Heart and selling out multiple shows across Northern Ireland, UK, Canada, and the Netherlands Lavengro have also been busy recording their debut EP, due to land in late 2024.

With a sound that effortlessly blends genres and resonates with authenticity, Lavengro are poised to capture hearts and ears alike, a testament to the extraordinary possibilities born out of determination and talent.

Singer-Songwriter & Producer Fishwyfe set to leave lasting impression on music fans with infectious debut Single ‘Ricky’

Irish-based singer, songwriter & producer, Fishwyfe has been reinventing the wheel of what it means to be an independent artist in today’s day and age. Starting her journey with acoustic guitar, Fishwyfe, previously known as ‘Host,‘ ventured into the realm of music production through Ableton, unlocking a world of sonic possibilities which enabled her to naturally develop her own unique sound and style.

A seasoned artist, Host’s musical journey took an unexpected turn when she lost her music in early 2023. Undeterred, she embraced a fresh start, reintroducing herself to the world under the moniker, Fishwyfe.

Now, Fishwyfe is set to make waves once again with her latest track, ‘Ricky,’ set for release on Feb 23rd, 2024. In the upbeat melody of ‘Ricky’ Fishwyfe delivers a hooky pop track that nudges carefully over the edge.

With a pulsating beat and energetic guitar riffs she delves deep into the relentless cycle of making regrettable decisions, feeling like she is digging a hole that seems impossible to climb out of.

The unintended and undesired connections she describes, becomes a repetitive occurrence, forming an unwanted ‘thing’ that contrasts starkly with the artist’s true desires.
“Ricky” is a poignant reflection on the struggle to break free from self-destructive behavior and the internal conflict between momentary desires and lasting consequences.
