Sister Alt-Pop Duo ZEZTRA set to release new Single ‘Fool’ out Friday June 28th

“a polished, alt-pop sound with an international outlook – marking them as a thrillingly unique force in Irish music” – Hot Press

Following in the footsteps of a new current wave of vibrant Irish artists invading the UK, Dublin born singer/songwriters Avril and Lorna Meade form the powerful sister alt-pop duo Zeztra.

Shortly after forming, Zeztra, caught the attention of Maverick Sabre who invited them to open for him at the Academy Dublin. This marked the beginning of their meteoric rise, leading to tours across the UK and US with him, including Brixton Academy and Brooklyn’s Rough Trade.  Continuing to gain support from prominent Irish artists, Zeztra recently supported number one selling Irish platinum artist, Damien Dempsey at his sold-out run of shows at Dublin’s Vicar Street in December.  They have since graced the stage of the prestigious Ruby Sessions alongside a myriad of some of the world’s biggest names.

When asked about working, performing and writing together as sisters, Lorna explained “being together throughout the lockdown period allowed us to come together and write lyrics that are inspired from both our lives”. Avril added “drawing inspiration from different genres of pop, alt-rock, R&B, and Latin music has honed our craft, creating songs with blood harmonies and hopeful instrumentation”.

Critically acclaimed, award winning producer John Reynolds (Sinead O’Connor/Passenger/Indigo Girls/Seun Kuti/Andrea Corr/Belinda Carlisle) picked up on the duo and invited them to record at Big Tree Studios. “I fell in love with the Zeztra sound when they played Vicar St supporting Damien Dempsey. Their exciting harmony vocal arrangements and great composition made me want to work with them. There’s something very special when siblings sing together. I joined forces with the brilliant  David Prendergast to take the songs on a production journey. A great team and a fantastic result”.

Zeztra will be releasing music from their forthcoming album in the summer.

“Their unique captivating harmonies are the driving force behind their sound.”Breaking Tunes

Kiruu Returns After 5 Years with Vibrant New Single “Mbingu”

An Afro-Pop, world-fusion celebration of mother nature, sung in English, Spanish, and Swahili

After a five-year hiatus, Irish-and-East-Africa-raised artist Kiruu is delighted to announce the release of his new single “Mbingu“, released on 21/06/2024. “Mbingu”, meaning “heaven” in Swahili, is a groovy Afro-pop and world music number that pays homage to the splendour of mother nature, and calls for its protection.

Produced by Cork-based Cian Sweeney, “Mbingu” weaves together a tapestry of musical influences and languages. Sung in English, Spanish, and Swahili, the song is driven by a captivating Lingala-style guitar riff, and features spoken messages about mother nature from around the world. “Mbingu” culminates in a cacophony of voices singing harmonies together.

Kiruu says: “Mbingu is a tribute to the beauty of our planet and its natural and cultural diversity. I hope it inspires listeners to appreciate and protect the natural world, and to listen to each other and to the wisdom already there within our ancient cultures”.

Fans of Afro-pop, world music, and anyone who appreciates a soulful, rhythmic journey will find “Mbingu” to be a delightful addition to their playlists.

Kiruu offers a unique sound taking influence from his mixed background, with roots in Tanzania and Ireland, and years spent in Spain. His songs are that are both deeply personal and universally resonant, incorporating multiple languages and musical styles. His 2019 album, Super Feo Express, garnered positive reviews from Nialler9, Hotpress, and other media, establishing him as a distinctive voice in the Irish music scene.

Alt-Soul Artist NIYL is ignoring red flags in new Single ‘Won’t Let My Lover Down’ – out July 5th

Irish soul artist NIYL is back with his next single ‘Won’t Let My Lover Down’ the 2nd track from his upcoming album Parish Is Burning.

A soul filled anthem, Won’t Let My Lover Down leads with NIYL’s powerhouse vocals on full show as electronic beats and soundscapes bring the track into a modern space that NIYL is quickly establishing as the sound for his musical world. The track was produced by Chris Bubenzar (Diffusion Lab) in Playground HQ.

The story’s key theme is ignorance is bliss and comments on how we tend to avoid the red flags in front of us when blindly in love with someone.

NIYL says: “I wanted to write a song that nods to my soul influences while also carving my own signature sound in the Irish music space. I am awful for choosing to ignore red flags when it comes to wanting to be with someone, so I wrote this in the hopes that I would cop on a small bit… but alas, it didn’t work! Musically, I wanted the song to pack a punch, be fun but still tell a vulnerable story which the lyrics convey.”

NIYL hopes to shed a light on growing up queer in rural Ireland with his modern soul sound and ‘Won’t Let My Lover Down’ is no exception to this ambition. The track will be available on all streaming platforms from July 5th.

Summoning comparisons to Teddy SwimsSam Smith and London Grammar, NIYL’s debut album ‘Parish is Burning’, is set for release later November 2024. The first track of the album, Not in Your Life is available to listen to on all streaming platforms now.

While this is NIYL’s debut album, the artist is no stranger to the music industry having performed as a vocalist with artists including Rufus Wainwright, Cynthia Erivo, Dermot Kennedy, Hermitage Green and the National Geographic Symphony.

“Dare I say it, better than Sam Smith?” – Fionnuala Moran, RTE 2FM

“An artist who delivers emotionally charged belters” – Hot Press Magazine

“I am so excited about this artists music, the vocals” – Claire Beck, Today FM

“A breakthrough artist who is pushing the boundaries of a traditional genre” – Rebecca Fisher, Extra.ie

Alternative Sunday Social Club Presents The Prongs in The Grand Social on Sunday, November 17th at 4.00pm

The Prongs, the world’s greatest fictional post-punk pop group, play an all-ages afternoon show at the Alternative Sunday Social Club in The Grand Social on November 17th.

Last year, The Prongs emerged from the pages of John Fleming’s cult novel, The Now Now Express, to conquer theatrical venues and rock bars in their native Ireland as well as cultural centres abroad. The BBC’s Gideon Coe revealed them as his firm fave with multiple airplays. Psychogeography develops the striking essence the band first revealed on 2023’s Theme from The Now Now Express CD. Niall Toner Jr’s delicate musical artistry and John Fleming’s lean literate lyrics fuse yet again into this work of elevated new wave / post-punk pop culture. Psychogeography is a stunning signpost to the next project by The Prongs: a full- length feature film.

Accolades for The Prongs: Theme Music from The Now Now. “Sophisticated melancholy… glimmers of dissatisfied vitriol… strident, slinky rock… deliciously unsettling” – The Irish Times

“Explore the magical world of The Prongs” – The Goo magazine

About the Alternative Sunday Social Club

The Alternative Sunday Social Club was created so that music fans can enjoy some top tunes on the last afternoon of the weekend. Since we launched at the beginning of 2015 we’ve hosted gigs by The 4 of Us, Rocky DeValera (front man of legendry Dublin bands The Gravediggers and The Rhythm Kings), The Business, Brush Shield’s Skid Row, Trouble Pilgrims (formerly The Radiators from Space), Vulpynes, The Lookalikes, Jazzabelles, Duncan Maitland, The Thrash Blues, Eileen Gogan and the Instructions, The Winters, TV Smith (The Adverts), Strand, Mike Brookfield, Protex, Niall Toner, Full Circle and The Outcasts. We’ve had music from right across the spectrum with rock, guitar pop, punk, Americana, blues and ska and we’ve grown our crowd by word of mouth with all ages dropping by on Sunday afternoons. For the band they get the kick of their early live shows, and the audience gets to enjoy the music and the musician up-close and personal. It’s cheap, cheerful and above all fun for everybody who comes along. This isn’t thousands of people in a converted warehouse; this is dozens of people enjoying music the way it was meant to be seen and heard.

Celebrated Folk Act Charles James & The Rise set to release new Single ‘Carry On’ June 26th

Donegal, Ireland – Celebrated folk act Charles James & The Rise are thrilled to announce the release of their poignant new single, “Carry On“, on June 26th, 2024. This marks the first release from their highly anticipated debut album, recorded at Attica Audio and produced by the acclaimed Orri McBrearty (Rosie Carney).

“Carry On” delves into the aftermath of loss, reflecting on acceptance as a pivotal stage of grief. It explores the profound transformation experienced through mourning and the enduring strength required to move forward. Featuring the exquisite contributions of Steve Wickham (The Waterboys) on mandolin and strings, and John Doherty (Little Hours) on backing vocals, the track embodies the haunting, cinematic folk sound that defines Charles James & The Rise.

About the song Charles James says “I started writing this song a few years back after the sudden loss of my father. I’d followed in his footsteps with a career at sea and he’s also the
reason I became a pilot so I was quite lost in the months after. I’d have dreams where he was still alive and Carry On was born out of that first few seconds after waking up, the sinking realisation that he was gone and I’d just have to get used to it.”

Hailing from Donegal, Ireland, Charles James & The Rise is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Charles James and Catherine O’Donnell. Known for their unique blend of cinematic folk with choral undertones, the band’s music is deeply influenced by the darker elements of the folk genre. While Charles, a Ship’s Pilot by trade, has spent two decades penning songs at sea,
their music has been profoundly shaped by his experiences and the recent, poignant loss of his father in 2020.

The band’s career highlights include recording at the iconic Sun Studios in Memphis, headlining shows in Chicago, and performing live radio sessions on Windy City Radio in Chicago and
WFPK in Louisville. They have shared stages with notable artists such as Ryan Sheridan, Moya Brennan, Blue Rose Code, The 4 of Us, Padraig Jack, and Grainne Hunt. Additionally, they have played at prominent venues from the North Pole Inn to Nashville and performed at Electric Picnic, one of Ireland’s largest music festivals.

In recent achievements, Charles James & The Rise were named Highland Radio’s winner in Hot Press’ A New Local Hero. They performed across Ireland and in Austin, Texas, and received
significant regional and national airplay. Their acclaim continued to grow as they were named one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s (ES) 20 Artists You Should Know for 2024.

Charles James & The Rise’s debut album, due for release early next year, promises a profound musical journey, with contributions from luminaries such as Steve Wickham and Laura
McFadden (Arborist, Krea). Influences range from Kris Kristofferson and Leonard Cohen to contemporary greats like Jason Isbell, ensuring a rich, reflective auditory experience.

Media praise for Charles James & The Rise includes accolades such as, “It will stop you in your tracks” by Paul McDevitt of Highland Radio, “An artist you should meet” by Rolling Stone ES, and “Not many bands working in 2023 can do what they do in 3 minutes” by MP3 Hugger. Skylight Webzine described their music as “a musical reminder of the complexities of life,” while London Peaky praised their work as “stunning, the darker side of folk.”

As Charles James & The Rise prepare to release “Carry On,” they invite listeners to embark on a deeply moving journey through grief, acceptance, and the resilience of the human spirit.

GazeFest Returns for a Second Year – Independent Irish Shoegaze Festival

Following on from the success of last years inaugural festival, GazeFest returns with a line up that promises to be even bigger than last year! Ireland’s first and only shoegaze festival, bringing together bands from all over Ireland, Northern Ireland and this year, Scotland, to celebrate the sounds of hazy reverberated fuzz and dreamy melodies.

Taking its tag line from a Melody Maker coined phrase ‘The Scene That Celebrates Itself’, which referred to how shoegaze bands in early 90’s London avoided traditional rivalries but instead were often seen at each other’s gigs, sometimes playing in each other’s bands, and drinking together. This is at the heart of what GazeFest is about, bringing together like minded individuals, both bands and crowd, to celebrate some of the most exciting talent across the island. The festival will take place over two dates August 30th and August 31th.

The first date will take place in the iconic Grand Social in Dublin and see a smaller line up of Virgins, Affection to Rent and Skyless to begin the festivities. Virgins have been making waves this year following the release of their highly acclaimed debut album ‘nothing hurt and everything was beautiful’ which caused Hot Press to dub them ‘the most promising fuzz guitar band since MBV’. Virgins headline both dates of the festival following appearances at Stendhal Festival and the rest of the year that will see them play Other Voices Wales and tour the UK in November. Affection to Rent are one of the brightest emerging talents from Dublin, who made the longlist of Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent competition and play Ireland Music Week in October. Relative newcomers Skyless are building on the success of debut single ‘That I Want You’

The second date on August 31st is the main event being held in Oh Yeah Centre, Belfast and boasts a massive 9 band line running from 2pm-11pm. Accompanying headliners Virgins are Sign Crushes Motorist (Donegal) fresh of a US tour, Wynona Bleach who released new single Swim in the Bay on Fierce Panda. They will all be joined by Sunstinger (Scot), In Athens (Cork), Affection to Rent (Dublin), Madams Last Discovery (Belfast), Gush (Belfast) and Klyda (Belfast)

The Belfast date is 14+ giving young people the opportunity to be a part of and experience some of the most exciting talent Ireland has to offer.

Tickets for both shows are available now.

Emerging Irish Pop Singer Lisa Keane set to release infectious new single ‘Chasing Ghosts’ July 12th

“…her newest track, which pairs emotional, visual lyrics with sleek production and creates a pop song that sticks.”  Hot Press.

“I had to add this one to the mix as soon as I listened to it. It’s very much welcome on this playlist.” –  Beta Da Silva, RTÉ 2FM.

“Showing an insightful understanding of human emotions, Lisa Keane finds the delicate line between innocent joviality and melancholic fragility.”  Otherside Reviews.

“I loved how slick and professional the production was on this…Really confident, really self-assured pop music.” Lauren Johnson (BBC ATL)

“A gently set slice of alt-pop.” The Last Mixed Tape

Lisa Keane is a singer/songwriter based in Dublin. She began songwriting at the age of 13 after discovering a music course for teens that focused on songwriting, recording, and performance. This course sparked her interest in songwriting, and she has been writing her own songs ever since. Lisa draws inspiration from artists like Taylor Swift and Griff, blending elements from different genres to create her own distinctive sound.

Lisa has received support from BBC Across the Line, FM104, RTE Entertainment, The Last Mixed Tape, and Hot PressSpin 1038 named her ‘One to Watch’ following the release of her third single “Run”. Her single ‘this is how it feels’ was featured as Laura Fox’s RTE 2FM ‘track of the week’.

“I have always loved music and singing since a young age. As a kid, I would put on home concerts for my family and make them listen to me singing and dancing around to Britney Spears songs. I began songwriting around the age of 13 after my Mam brought me to record a cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘White Horse’ at Contact Studios for my birthday. At the studio, I learnt about a music course called Suburban Sounds that they run for teenagers. The course is focused around songwriting and live performance. This really kick-started my interest in songwriting and I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to take part in Suburban Sounds during my secondary school years.”

Lisa’s new single ‘Chasing Ghosts’ will be released on the 12th of July. ‘Chasing Ghosts’ is an up-beat pop song. The song was produced by Irish producer Sam Stevenson, who also mixed the track. This is the 5th time the pair have worked together. The vocals for the song were recorded in Belfast, where Sam is based.

The production of ‘Chasing Ghosts’ was influenced by artists such as Griff and Robyn. Some songs that stood out during the production phase as reference tracks included ‘Dancing on my Own’, ‘Call your Girlfriend’ and ‘Vertigo’. It was mastered by Fergal Davis.

The song was inspired by a recent breakup and the feelings that arise from having to go back into the world alone after being with someone for a long time. While the music is upbeat, the lyrics explore the themes of heartbreak and loneliness.

“I wanted to create a song that people could dance away their feelings to. Even though the lyrics are sad. It can be euphoric to take those sad feelings and create something upbeat and energetic. In a way it’s taking the negative energy that comes from a break-up and turning it into something positive.”

Michael Roe from Faction Records in new Episode of the IMRO Podcast

“Labels probably need to be more like music companies that can step in and fulfill whatever role is required by the artist.”

Today have the third and penultimate conversation from our Label Focus mini-series presented by Zara Hedderman. So far we’ve heard from Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records and Joey Edwards from Pizza Pizza Records and in this episode, you’ll hear Zara speaking with Michael Roe, label and artist manager with Faction Records.

Faction Records is coming close to reaching a massive milestone of 20 years in business after it was founded by Ken Allen in 2006. You may remember a compilation CD from around that time called Faction One and featured bands like Director, The Immediate, Republic of Loose and Future Kings of Spain amongst others. Today, populating Faction’s roster of artists are a number of firm favourites with critics and audiences such as Sorcha Richardson, Niamh Regan, Martin Hayes, and Jape.

Over the course of the chat Michael delved into the many ways that the industry is changing and how he and his colleagues at Faction work with their artists to develop their careers and prepare them to build their audience base and engage with international markets. In this regard, the conversation explores different elements of the business-side of the artist-label relationship and how important it is to have a plan but also not fear failure along the way. Zara and Michael discuss the impact of artists self-releasing their music and how that’s changing the overall landscape and the importance of the relationships artists build with various media outlets and journalists.

We’ll have another episode, the final one in this series, very soon, but until then, here’s Michael Roe of Faction Records.

Irish Rising Star Bradley Marshall releases first Single ‘Terrified’ on EMI Records

Hailing from Tallaght in Dublin, Ireland, 24-year-old Bradley Marshall shares ‘Terrified’, his first release signed to EMI Records – Listen HERE.

Bradley’s distinct vocal style carves the way for the next generation of singer-songwriters with heartfelt songs that pack a powerful emotional punch.

Co-written with Liam Geddes (who also co-produced) and Charlie Bryce, ‘Terrified’ spotlights Bradley’s knack for writing honest and relatable songs whilst showing that his talents are developing at a rapid rate. “I wish that I could show the parts of me that I don’t like / but I’m terrified,” he sings over delicate piano chords, his bold voice displaying an innate talent for an emotion-drenched delivery of a heart-rending lyric.

Terrified is about overcoming insecurities when you just don’t feel comfortable in your own skin,” Bradley explains. “I wrote this song for people who struggle to embrace their so called ‘flaws’ and to echo the point, that they are not alone.

Growing up singing and writing all his own music, Bradley’s unique formula of songwriting touches the hearts of every listener, as proven with the independently released ‘Perfect For Me’ which has stacked up almost 10 million streams and built an already steady dedicated following around him.

Bradley began building a steady following with cover versions of songs by such diverse artists as Billie Eilish, James Arthur, Luther Vandross, plus a confidently tackled Bruno Mars ‘Grenade’ cover at just 11 years old. Since that point, Bradley’s potential was immediately evident.

“One thing I do know is I could never see myself doing anything else but singing my songs. Stepping onstage to sing in front of people is a feeling I know I will never get doing anything else. I genuinely feel that performing and sharing my stories is what I was born to do.”

With a sold-out debut headline show in Dublin’s much-loved Workman’s Club Cellar under his belt, and an appearance at the Bundoran Sea Sessions Festival this weekend (June 21-23), Bradley Marshall is a singular artist set to become one of Ireland’s next great singer-songwriters.
