Irish pop-punk upstarts Rowdy Outsider release anthemic new single and debut EP “Different Heart To Break”

“A Pop-Punk trio from Drogheda, Rowdy Outsider could very well be Ireland’s answer to Blink-182”
– Hot Press

“The Irish outfit fuse pop, punk and new wave sounds to create music that is nostalgic yet contemporary.”
– Earmilk

Rowdy Outsider are a pop punk band from Drogheda, Ireland consisting of vocalist Matthew Doyle, bassist Conor Whearty and drummer Sean Murtagh.
‘Different Heart to Break‘ is the band’s debut EP. A 6 song, anthemic punk tale of navigating love, loss and confusion during the start of the 2020s – the strangest years of everyone’s lives. The band’s first release of 2024 ‘When You’re Gone’ garnered widespread acclaim with support from Nels Hylton’s` ‘Future Alternative’ on BBC Radio 1 and Hot Press Magazine’s ‘Track of the Day’.

The April follow up ‘VICTIMS’ also landed with support from Hot Press with airplay from the US, UK and Ireland’s iRadio, Beat 102 103, and Cork’s Red FM. 2023 saw the release of ‘2 DEAD CATS’ and ‘Causing My Insanity’ which landed on Spotify editorials New Music Friday UK and A Breath of Fresh Eire alongside radio play from the likes of RTE 2FM.

Rowdy Outsider are continuing to make a name for themselves with their eclectic brand of modern Irish pop punk. Known for their passionate, high energy live performances and accomplished recordings, it won’t be long before Rowdy Outsider are Ireland’s next great rock export.

“Different Heart to Break is a sobering and self-reflective song. It describes the behaviours of a person with a tendency to end both romantic and friendly connections with little regard for the feelings of the other person. The lyrics describe awareness and remorse while showing the disconnect between that awareness and their actions. For our first EP we wanted to close with a song that we’d play on repeat even if it wasn’t ours. Sonically, we drew from the likes of Angels & Airwaves and U2 with heavy spatial effects, synth layers and gang vocals.”

Irish indie-pop starlets Big Sleep release groove driven new single ‘Daisy’ on Weds 29th May and announce Ireland & UK Tour dates and festivals

‘Daisy‘ is the latest offering from Dublin’s Big Sleep, an angular yet groove-driven track with garage-rock meets indie-soul soundscapes. This is the third release of 2024 from Big Sleep following ‘All My Friends‘ and ‘Two Cents‘ which reached number 4 in the Irish Breakers Radio Charts. ‘Daisy‘ was recorded and produced by Chris Ryan (NewDadJust Mustard, Chalk) in Start Together Studios, Belfast. Mixed and mastered by Tone Def (Briston MaroneyGreen Day).

Quote about the ‘Daisy’:

‘One of our favourite songs we’ve written to date. Named after Daisy, Naiara’s dog who was in the room at the time of inception, the song came about when we were jamming ideas one day. When we found this riff that we kept on coming back to that you can hear in the intro of the song. We knew we had something special so we wrote and rewrote till we ended up with the finished version that we’ve just dropped. We wrote ‘Daisy’ a few weeks after we supported this great band from New York called Geese for their Dublin so we reckon they were definitely an influence. We reckon there’s a bit of Talking Heads and The Strokes in there too.’

The Dublin-based group partly came together at school and other’s later joined through the city’s live music scene. Blending indie-alternative influences with pop and soul, the Irish-Italian outfit takes influence from acts such as The CureDOPE LEMON, and Big Thief. Since their debut EP release in June 2022, Big Sleep have toured around Europe, received regular international radio play and featured on heavyweight Spotify editorials like New Music Friday, The Other List, All New Rock to name a few. 2023 was a sell out year for the upcoming act who sold out headliners across Dublin, London and Berlin alongside festival appearances at All Together Now, Indiependence and Electric Picnic. The band were also awarded the accolade as one of RTÉ’s Rising Artists of 2024. With a thick catalogue of tracks ready for release and international headline dates lined up, 2024 is set to be a breakout year for Big Sleep.

“I had to get my driving license the week the tour started… there’s been loads of chaotic stuff” | Joey Edwards from Pizza Pizza Records in new Episode of the IMRO Podcast

On today’s episode of the IMRO Podcast we’re bringing you the second installment of a mini-series of conversations from Zara Hedderman that explore the various practicalities, challenges and, of course, the joys of running a record label in Ireland. In the first episode, we heard from Leitrim-based Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records, who shared great insights into the label’s catalog and more, since that episode has come out there’s been announcements of exciting forthcoming releases to come from Nyahh so do keep an ear out for them!

Today, we make the journey (in our imaginations, at least)  from Leitrim to County Louth, parking up in Dundalk where we’ll hear from Joey Edwards – co-founder of Pizza Pizza Records, sound engineer extraordinaire and musician in his own right. Founded in 2018, Pizza Pizza Records, is an independent artist-led label, and it struck gold with its inaugural release Wednesday, the critically acclaimed and Choice Prize nominated debut from Just Mustard. That album not only announced Just Mustard as an act that audiences outside of Ireland were getting excited about, but it immediately asserted Pizza Pizza Record’s reputation of a label working with the best in Ireland’s independent acts up and down the country and certainly one worthy of being bookmarked to keep up with the buzzing  independent scene. Today, the label’s roster has expanded to include Clara Tracey, Elaine Malone, Trick Mist, The Altered Hours, and Larry and Elephant.

In this episode, Zara and Joey talk about Wednesday’s impact on Pizza Pizza Records and the initial period of operating as a label, how they maintained momentum and how things progressed from that first offering. Notably, Just Mustard have since signed to Partisan Records – with Fontaines DC and Aoife Nessa Frances as labelmates – and Joey, who co-manages the band, reflects on the ways that working with Partisan has inspired different ways to keep Pizza Pizza going sustainably while keeping audiences engaged. In this regard, community and connection – aside from providing a platform for excellent independent Irish artists – were two things Joey kept circling back on when discussing the label’s evolution and the general DIY climate both locally and abroad. We touched on the role of physical media given Pizza Pizza’s viny-forward MO and its importance within the foundation of DIY communities whether it’s finding like-minded people in local record shops or in the queue at the merch table after a gig. You never know where a conversation will take you!

Thanks so much for joining us again, and for all your wonderful feedback on the Nyahh Records conversation, it’s greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy learning about Pizza Pizza Records in this episode and maybe afterwards are inspired to set up your own independent label. We’ll be back soon, but until then, here’s Joey Edwards of Pizza Pizza Records.

B4bzy’s Vibrant New Single “Easy” – A Fresh Perspective on Life’s Ups and Downs

After a brief hiatus, Irish hip-hop artist B4bzy is back with a banger. ‘Easy’ seamlessly blends elements of hip-hop and afrobeats, and is a testament to B4bzy’s signature style – witty lyricism, infectious beats, and an undeniably positive vibe. ‘Easy’ is poised to become the anthem of the summer.

The track delivers a refreshing message about embracing life’s challenges with a carefree attitude. ‘Easy’ main theme revolves around the idea that choosing happiness over stress is the key to a fulfilling existence. Through playful banter and clever wordplay, B4bzy paints a vivid picture of the “sour brothers” – uptight individuals who “should get some rest and be less irate.”

From the first verse to the final chorus, ‘Easy’ exudes an irresistible charm that is sure to resonate with listeners of all backgrounds. B4bzy’s delivery is smooth; effortlessly riding the laid-back groove laid down by the track’s infectious beat produced by Certified Gold producer, JBJ.

“I wanted to create a song that would put a smile on people’s faces and remind them to take life a little less seriously. We all encounter challenges, but it’s how we choose to approach them that defines our experience. ‘Easy’ is my way of encouraging listeners to embrace positivity and let go of unnecessary stress.”

ICE passes €1bn a year in royalties distributed

ICE has distributed more than €1bn to rightsholders in a consecutive 12-month period for the first time.

It took just under 3½ years to reach the first €1bn in distributions, just over 2 more years to pass the second billion and has been closing in on a single year since. With this distribution milestone passed, ICE has now delivered a total of €4.5bn since its first royalty distributions in 2016.

The rate of royalty distributions to musical creators has exponentially increased with ICE serving more Societies & Publishers and processing and licensing even more DSPs and territories.

At the same time, ICE has delivered consistent improvements to systems and processes which have benefited songwriters, with ICE’s unique Multi-Stage invoicing bringing in over €180 million more in royalties, paid to writers on an accurate musical works usage basis.

On the licensing side it has pioneered innovations like self-serve licensing for start-ups (Licensr), and a DSP audit program to maximise and assure collections for songwriters.

The scale of the ICE hub allows for investments beyond the level a single society could make, reducing duplication and enabling more automation, which is critical in meeting the modern IT infrastructure challenges around connecting songwriters’ remuneration to the digital use of their work.

Peter de Mönnink, CEO, ICE

“Distributing €1bn in 12 months to rightsholders is a major achievement, reflecting the hard work, expertise, and innovation of everyone at ICE in ensuring our customers can deliver to their members.

Despite their crucial role, copyright and music publishing often do not receive the recognition they deserve. Music is the cornerstone of today’s digital services, with customer experiences built around the value of music and the importance of songwriting.

The increasing scale of the ICE Hub is paramount to offer the highest and most efficient distributions for songwriters and composers. It is ICE’s belief that this scale will be evermore important to ensure fair and sustainable royalty flows for rightsholders in the online space. This is not only our mission, but also our passion.

To support our ongoing efforts, and address the complexities of royalty management, ICE has a very strong focus on scalability facilitated by its ongoing platform development. Whilst this innovative undertaking presents significant challenges, we are pleased with the progress we have made. ICE is now moving step by step into deployment phases of this advanced platform.

ICE is on a path of continuous innovation, to deliver more royalties, at less cost, with an even better service.”

Rachael Naylor, Chief Operating Officer, ICE

“We are extremely proud to have delivered more royalties, faster and with optimised accuracy to our customers, which in turn allows increased onward distributions to their Songwriters and Composers, enabling them to continue creating.

ICE are the touchpoint for a significant portion of distributions across a number of exploitation types in the industry, as well as online processing, and we recognize the vital importance of copyright excellence underpinning every service we offer now and in the future.

Our recent customer survey results, with higher ratings across all service areas, evidences ICE’s heightened service performance. This has also been reflected in customers renewing with ICE, increasing the scope of services they take from us and even moving from other service providers.

We do not underestimate the trust placed in us by our customers to deliver critical and reliable royalty services, and are driven to continue to transform internally to achieve the right mix of technical, service and process optimisation all delivered by truly committed and expert teams.”

Snow Patrol announce eagerly awaited return with Brand New Album + Arena Tour

SNOW PATROL have announced their eagerly awaited return with a brand new album. Titled ‘The Forest Is The Path’, the album is the Northern Irish band’s first in six years, following 2018’s ‘Wildness’, and is set for release on September 13th via Polydor Records and Universal Music Ireland. It is produced by Fraser T Smith (Adele/Dave/Stormzy) and the band. Now comprising the trio of Gary Lightbody, Nathan Connolly and Johnny McDaid, Snow Patrol offer the first taste of their extraordinary new album with first single ‘The Beginning’, as well as announcing details of a UK and Ireland Arena tour in 2025.

‘The Forest Is The Path’ was written by Gary Lightbody, Nathan Connolly and Johnny McDaid and features twelve tracks. Fraser T Smith, Will Reynolds, Roy Kerr and Troy Van Leeuwen (QOTSA) also contributed to the writing on some of the songs on the album. The album and single artwork features paintings by Gary Lightbody.

‘The Beginning’ is the cornerstone of the band’s eighth studio album, written on a trip to Somerset. Gary picks up the story, “The first day we wrote The Beginning, start to finish.” “And he did the vocal in one take,” says Johnny. “Straight after writing the lyrics. So, it has this mind-collapsing quality to it where you feel like you’re seeing into someone’s soul.”

‘The Forest is the Path’ is an album rooted in reflection, introspection, and interrogation. One of its key building blocks, says Gary, was the idea of love from the distance of time. “I haven’t been in a relationship for a very long time, 10 years or more, so love from a distance to me meant the way a relationship sits in your memory from a distance of, say, 10 years. That’s not something I’d previously thought about as a way to write about love. So, it’s like, when you’re in love, you’re standing in the lobby of the Empire State Building. When you’ve broken up with that person, you’re out in the street. You can still see the building, but you’re not in there anymore. And when it’s 10 years later, now you’re standing in Brooklyn looking at the Manhattan skyline.”

It’s a theme addressed unblinkingly and unflinchingly on the ‘The Beginning’. “That’s kind of a summing up of this album,” Gary continues. “It’s a way of looking at various mistakes, any pain I may have caused, from a place where nothing is hurting anymore, except the memory when you pull it back into your mind. The memory itself is full of hurt but everything around it isn’t. You’re holding in your hand this ball of fire, but now you’ve got gloves on.

The Band have also announced details of an 8 date UK & Ireland Arena tour in February 2025, including Dublin’s 3Arena on 25th February.
