Irish Electronic Music Showcase | London | 20th March

RED GALLERY IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE IRISH CENTRE & CRAIC IT LONDON PRESENT
IRISH ELECTRONICS – MARCH 20TH 2015

Nowadays electronic music and clubs are a mainstay of modern European youth culture and the Green Isle is no different. Ireland is no longer a nation celebrated for its well-established traditional and rock heritage, a new wave of underground electronic music has swept away with tradition.  Irish Electronics have moved on from the unsung days of the mid 80’s when pioneers like Barry Warner brought his Detroit inspired electropop single “Just a Floor” to an un appreciative audience. The birth of Acid House created an ever bulging club scene which soared till the silence of theirish electronics Celtic “Tiger” in the late noughties. The re-emergence of  the Acid House spirt has changed Ireland’s musical climate not only locally, but has begun to highlight it’s identity to the rest of the electronic music world. However Ireland’s more recent economic woes led to a mass exodus of talent, which witnessed large waves of creative Diaspora flee the Island from all walks of life and business.  The bright lights of London beckoned once again for a new generation of Young Irish exiles, but this time it was the turn of the highly educated young go getter from high end lawyers, in demand graphic designers, highly skilled medical professionals to the one of the most respected young fashion designers, Simone Rocha. London offered you an option.

Whether coincidence or luck of the Irish, this exodus also seems to have aligned it’s self with a fresh new breed of Irish electronic artists making a name for themselves worldwide. Producers like Mano Le Tough, Bicep & Matador becoming headline acts in some of the most famous clubs on the white isle of Ibiza and beyond. There have never been any borders in dance music in Ireland. The Irish clubbing scene made a point of being a safe haven from the “troubles”. Clubs were always a space where it never mattereded what your political background or belief was, all that was left at the cloak room as people looked to bond over soul warming music.

On the 20th March Red Gallery LDN in association with the Irish Centre & Craic It London will showcase some of best of the latest wave of producers and dj’s the Emerald isle has to offer. Some of Belfasts finest are on board in the shapearveene03 of the Extended Play Crew, label boss Timmy Stewart brings two of the brightest London based dj’s from the stable in the form of Cromby and Swoose.  Another one of the most hotly tipped acts to come from Northern Ireland is the freshly rebranded OneKnown who has a deluge of labels trying to tie him down. Liverpool Irish are are represented by one of the freshest Hip Hop producers in Europe right now SertOne.  From Dublin The Greedy Pig Dj’s who run one of the most talked about Irish counter culture blogs and have recently curated the art work for a J-Dilla release will be there. Johnny Moy & Billy Scurry represent the originators of the scene, two of the most celebrated Irish dj’s of the past 30 years who shaped how modern clubbing evolved to it’s current shape in Dublin. London based representation consists of Dave Magnier of House of Disco one of the biggest brands in underground house music in the city. Lorcan Mak represents a new breed of multi talented creatives who can turn his hand to almost anything creative and deliver at an outstanding level, he’s also a great dj! Bazza Ranks of Ragga Hip Hop crew the Dirty Dubsters is another of Dublins finest who has relocated to London, so expect a slew of original dub plate edits and dance hall rhythms. Last but not least the event curator Arveene completes the line up as one of Ireland most celebrated dj’s and producers who is now London based.

“Full Stream Ahead” – IMRO Music Streaming Seminar | 5th March

Digital technology, once accused of nearly destroying the music industry, is now being hailed as its saviour. As a sign of streaming’s maturity, listening data has now been incorporated in the UK’s official albums charts for the first time. Online streaming services, from the likes of Spotify, Deezer and Last FM have flourished along with the rise of the connected smartphone and tablet computers.streaming

How are Deezer and Rdio ‐ along with other music streaming services ‐ changing the marketplace? While streaming continues to drive music discovery and consumption, what does it do for music sales? As streaming and download services command an increasingly larger piece of the music consumption puzzle what impact is this having on radio and TV?  How do songwriters/artists interact with the various streaming services to maximise their return and exposure?   What are the most effective strategies for emerging artists and songwriters to be heard in today’s streaming age given the abundance of music that they must compete with including new acts as well as the legacy of the past? How has the revenue mix changed in the digital era and how can artists maximise income streams given those changes? How do streaming services help artists find an audience for their music? What acts have recently broken through internationally and why? Are there any commonalities in the reasons why they’ve succeeded on a global platform?

These are just some of the topics that we will explore at this not to be missed seminar at IMRO next month.

Date: Thursday 5th March
Location: IMRO, Copyright House, Pembroke Row, Dublin 2.

The award for National Live Music Venue of the Year 2014 (via public vote) went to Dolans, Limerick.

Of the annual awards voted by over 10,000 IMRO members, Keith Donald, IMRO Chairman said  This is our annual chance to give a really big thank-you to promoters and venues across the country. The work they do is invaluable, as young bands and artists can’t build up an audience without them”.

Dublin –  Vicar St, Dublin

Rest of Leinster – Cleere’s Bar & Theatre, Kilkenny

Munster – University Concert Hall, Limerick

Ulster – Voodoo Venue, Letterkenny

Connacht – Matt Molloy’s, Mayo

Also nabbing accolades for IMRO Live Music Festival of the Year and IMRO Best Small Live Music Festival 2014 were   Electric Picnic and Kilkenny Roots Festival respectively.

Performances on the night came from The Minutes, Lethal Dialect and Jack O’ Rourke.

Hot Press Editor Niall Stokes also gave special commendations, presenting awards to 5th On Teeling in Sligo, Whelan’s in Dublin and 3Arena.

He said: “Live music is more important than ever for musicians and bands – so it is crucial they have the best possible venues to play in. The IMRO Live Music Venue Awards are a fantastic platform for recognising all of the amazing work that is happening all over Ireland, in creating those essential opportunities for musicians.

“Great venues are really important in creating scenes and both 5th On Teeling in Sligo and Whelan’s in Dublin – who are the recipients of a special Lifetime Achievement Award from Hot Press to mark the end of their 25th Anniversary celebrations – fit that description perfectly.

The overall winner of the Hot Press Live Music Venue of the Year is 3Arena, in Dublin, which of course was refurbished and rebranded during the year. 3Arena is widely recognised in the business as one of the greatest music venues in the world. It has brought the presentation of live music to a new level of sophistication here, setting standards that the whole live music industry in Ireland can both benefit and learn from. They are hugely deserving of this accolade.”

Jape Returns With Fifth Studio Album “This Chemical Sea”

If you’re looking for music that’s emotionally engaging, texturally lush, loaded with detail, adventurous in spirit and melodically rich, then Jape are worthy of your time.’ Drowned in SoundJAPE-This-Chemical-Sea-1000x1000px

‘The strong hooks bring you in and the downbeat material creeps up on you.’ The 405

The prolific Richie Egan returns with Jape’s fifth studio album ‘This Chemical Sea’, available from January 23th on Faction Records.

Revered by critics and fans alike in their native Ireland, Jape is the only act to have received the Meteor Choice Award for best Irish album twice: for their third album ‘Ritual’ (2008) and their last full length effort ‘Ocean of Frequency’ (2011).

On this LP, Jape have tangibly honed their sound, and written what the band calls ‘the first album which has a uniquely ‘Jape’ sound from start to finish, a type of gothic pop with lyrics of unusual depth.’ The record combines the mindset of genre-bending music that the band have always been admired for with a strict adherence to a pop format. It incorporates a nod to some of Egan’s biggest experimental influences (Voices from the Lake, Raymond Scott, The Microphones), but never veers away from placing the songs firmly within the frame of the pop genre.

The hooks throughout the LP are strong and resonate above the bouncing keyboards, particularly on the record’s lead single ‘The Heart’s Desire’. The Peaking Lights remix of the track, which premiered on The Line of Best Fit and received coveted airplay on Huw Stephens’ show, takes the song’s irresistible melodies and lets them flow for seven minutes, highlighting the band’s talent for penning an irresistable chorus.

The record’s strengths are enhanced by the skilful mix of David Wrench, who has worked with the likes of FKA Twigs, Caribou, and Jungle. The powerful melodies are nurtured, but never at the expense of the stunning instrumentation on tracks such as album opener ‘Seance of Light’, where the synthesisers shimmer and shine on a sea of deep electronic bass lines, along with other album highlights ‘Love on the Crest of a Wave’ and ‘Absolutely Animals’.

Following an extensive tour of Australia and Europe, Egan relocated to Malmo, Sweden in 2012, where he found a studio to write and record the majority of the new record. Egan explained his intention was to ‘make a coherent album that was a pure expression of my inner thoughts.’ Far from an insular process however, this was the first time somebody else was let in on the creative process. The tracks would be shared with fellow band member Glenn Keating for feedback, something Egan feels ‘was inspiring and helped me to push myself so much harder.’

Further adding to the collaborative aspect of the album, mercury prize nominated Villagers’ frontman Conor O’Brien features on the LP’s penultimate song ‘Ribbon Ribbon Ribbon’. However, regardless of outside influence, Egan also manages to demonstrate his penchant for taking inspiration from the personal, such as in the staggeringly beautiful final piano line of ‘Breath of Life’. This was written the same week his mother fell extremely ill, and its melody is something he believes reflects the magical quality of music and its ability to induce memory’’.

As a man who has worked in many bands prior to, and alongside, Jape (The Redneck Manifesto, Villagers, David Kitt), Richie Egan has an impressive back catalogue of work, but ‘This Chemical Sea’ may well be considered his greatest achievement thus far. It is a compelling pop record with all the attributes of an album which will last well beyond its 2015

IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards 2014 | Shortlist Announced

The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) is delighted to announce that the seventh IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards will take place on Tuesday 3rd February 2015 at IMRO HQ in Dublin.AWARDS 2014

The shortlist (below) was announced this morning via the IMRO building by Victor Finn (IMRO Chief Executive).

The annual awards celebrate the dedication and passion of those who work in Ireland’s live music venues, providing the public with an exceptional live music experience, week in, week out.

Live music venues and festivals play a vital role in the music industry in Ireland, giving international and homegrown artists a platform to engage with fans and build new audiences. But with sales of albums having fallen dramatically, live music is more important than ever, as the lifeblood of the industry. Which makes it crucial that we have great venues all over Ireland in which our songwriters, artists and bands can find their voices, build their experience and win support.
