“Son of Lucifer Wins” on Moonlit Night as Daddy Joey Lee Lawlor Welcomes his 7th Child and a Star is Born!

October 13th, 2016 will long be remembered as a landmark night for Ireland’s Alternative Country Music. The Gala event was attended by music legends and newcomers alike, the occasion was the first annual Dublin City Rounders Alt-Country Song Contest Winners Ceremony held at IMRO HQ. The event was hosted by the fabulous Dublin City Rounders, brothers Rohan and Al Healy, of The Voice UK (BBC) and Busker Abu (TG4) fame.

The Dublin City Rounders performed a rousing rendition of their song “The Rockin’ Commandos” followed by a brand new tune; the title track from their forthcoming album “It Used to be About the Money”.

The esteemed judges of the contest were Niall Toner, RTE DJ with the Roots Freeway, celebrated Irish bluegrass & alt-country songwriter and musician whose songs have appeared in the likes of Nashville (TV) and Grand Theft Auto 5 (game). Catherine Simpson Schefter, DJ at Garden County Radio’s Twang Time, and member of rock n roll, old timey and bluegrass groups Thunderbirds & Huegrass. And David Virgin, 5 number 1 singles in the Australian independent charts, and has shared the stage with the likes of Nick Cave, INXS, Mary Black & Cat Power.

The second place prize of €100 cash, a professional live music video and slot at the Short Grass Sessions was presented by Mike Gleeson of DownDa Road Productions and awarded to Vagabonds and Thieves for their song “Devil’s Beat”. And first place was awarded to Joey Lee Lawlor for his song “Son Of Lucifer”. The award of €300 and a beautiful hand crafted sculpture by artists Deidre Griffin and George Moor was accepted by Joey’s sister as Joey awaited the birth of his 7th child in one of Dublin’s maternity hospitals.

The winners’ names were transported to be read out via the, now famous, Silver Cowboy Hat by beautiful assistant Karen Walsh. Also on the night talented young harpist Caoimhe O’Farrell greeted guests with gentle music as they arrived, world renowned photographer Hector Heathwood was on hand to capture the evening, radio DJ, stage manager and music industry personality Hazel Lake made sure the night ran smoothly and sponsors O’Hara’s Irish Carft Beers ensured the beer flowed freely.

Good luck and fairplay to all the talented entrants who included songwriters from all over the island of Ireland, and cheers and welcome to the birth of a new and exciting addition to the great wealth that is the Irish Music world.

Saramai Launch Their Second EP ‘Magnetic North’ on 19th Oct

Meath band Saramai are launching their second EP ‘Magnetic North’ in Whelan’s (upstairs) this Wednesday the 19th of October. Supporting them on the night is the extraordinary Rosa Nutty.

This will be the last performance of their 10 date tour which has brought them to Belfast, London, Cork, Galway, Bangor, Old Castle and more. They also performed as part of the renowned showcase Hard Working Class Heroes festival in Dublin last weekend.

Describing their sound as alt-euphoric they have developed a unique voice as a band, touring and writing together since they released their first EP ‘Red Moon’ last November. Drummer Aimie Mallon and guitarist Cormac O’Keeffe initially joined Saramai Leech on tour as a backing band but, as new songs veered away from a singer-songwriter quality to a more textured feel, they quickly realised they had a full band sound.

Since forming they have performed at Other Voices in Dingle which was broadcast on RTE 2 during the summer and they have just released their first music video created by London-based animator Aaron Brady. Hot Press magazine premiered the video for ‘Trees’ earlier this week

While touring their first release earlier this year they spent two days in the wilds of Donegal, in Attica studios, where they recorded four songs with Tommy McLaughlin (SOAK, Bell X1, Villagers, Cathy Davey). The fruits of this live session with Tommy is their second EP ‘Magnetic North’.

Tickets into their Whelans’ gig are 10 euros and includes a free signed copy of the EP.

Canadian Based Pop Quartet ROMES Announce New Single Tryna Be

“Best new band I’ve heard since finishing my @guardianmusic new band of the week article 20 minutes ago.”Paul Lester (Guardian Music)

” … a lightning in a bottle debut that’s good to the last drop, jolting you to life like a shot to the heart of straight serotonin.” – Neon Gold

Having set the radio airwaves alight with their debut single Believe, two parts Irish and two parts Canadian, Toronto-based alternative pop quartet ROMES are set to release their latest single Tryna Be on 18 November via Five Seven Music.

ROMES has taken advantage of their culturally diverse downtown Toronto neighborhood, fine-tuning their eclectic sound in a converted red-brick basement. The band is comprised of Jacob Bitove on vocals, brother Nick Bitove on drums, and childhood friends Andrew Keyes on the bass, and James Tebbitt on guitar, all having met while attending school in Ireland.

Tryna Be, which has already gathered support from BBC Radio 2’s Dermot O’Leary, is taken from the band’s four track EP Believe, a release which melts their pop sensibilities with an alternative vibe that is completely their own. Acclaimed producer and mixer Tony Hoffer (Beck, M83, Phoenix) first connected with ROMES over their mutual love for an irresistible yet unpretentious rock sound. “We chatted about old and new songs that excited us which led to planning on what to do with the ROMES songs once we entered my studio,” he said. “I wanted to make sure you could literally ‘feel’ the power of the band as if you’re standing in the same room with them as well as be able to hear the personality of each member’s playing.”

The group’s initial performances in Canada have been turning heads and there are more to come.
