‘hearing leaves’ by Karen Power selected for ISCM World Music Days 2018

hearing leaves, a work for string quartet by Irish composer Karen Power, has been selected by the International Society of Contemporary Music for its World Music Days festival in Beijing in May 2018. The work will be performed during the festival and Karen Power will attend.

hearing leaves (2013) was commissioned by the ConTempo Quartet. It was written during Karen’s Galway Music Residency to celebrate 10 years of music in the city. A key component of this residency lay in delivering workshops to school students, therefore much of the origins of this work are connected with explorations made with students during these composition workshops. The work is a celebration of the excitement that each of us feels, or felt as young children, when we explore sound. The whole work moves through a series of texture and gesture-based sounds, which are not necessarily immediately recognisable as sounds of a string quartet, but which ‘grow into’ the quartet while also opening up new sonic avenues. Large chords are plotted throughout the piece and allude to a more angular and sharp sound-world then is at work throughout the rest of the work. These chords bring the quartet together and allow individual instruments the freedom to meander and stray in between.

Everyday environments and how we hear everyday sounds lies at the core of Karen Power’s practice with a continued interest in blurring the distinction between what most of us call ‘music’ and all other sound. She has found inspiration in the natural world and how we respond to spaces we occupy. She continually utilises our inherent familiarity with such sounds and spaces as a means of engaging with audiences. Resulting works challenge the listeners memory of hearing while simultaneously shifting focus and presenting new contexts for such sounds. Current explorations include a fluxus-style work: those are the dangers of round vegetables in a major train station where players and environmental sounds became one, a site specific radio art piece in Cork City Gaol commissioned by RTÉ lyric fm, and a large-scale commission from Cork Midsummer Festival.

The Association of Irish Composers’ mission is to strengthen the voice of contemporary composers, through advocacy, promotion, discussion and opportunity. AIC is the Irish section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and is the Irish member of ECSA through its partners IASCA. Its national partners include CMC and IMRO. They receive financial support from IMRO, Culture Ireland and Arts Council Ireland.

The annual ISCM World Music Days festival is organised each year by a different host. The festival presents music from each of their members, showcasing the incredible diversity of musical practice in our time. This year’s festival will be held 19-26 May in Beijing, China.

International Hit Songwriters Ruth-Anne Cunningham and Johnny McDaid Receive IMRO Outstanding Achievement Awards

International hit songwriters Ruth-Anne Cunningham and Johnny McDaid were presented with IMRO Outstanding Achievement Awards at the Radio Days Ireland conference which took place in the Gibson Hotel, Dublin this evening.  These awards recognise the enormous contribution that both songwriters have made on the global stage.

IMRO Chairperson Eleanor McEvoy said, “It is an honour to present both Johnny and Ruth-Anne with an IMRO Outstanding Achievement Award. Both Irish songwriters have made an undeniable impact, leaving their own imprint on contemporary music worldwide which will last for many years to come”.

With a powerhouse voice and a whole lot of soul, Ireland born and London based Ruth-Anne found the missing link between gritty nineties R&B à la Lauryn Hill and seventies songwriter storytelling reminiscent of Carole King. The musical journey of artist, songwriter, to performer Ruth-Anne has been marked by fearlessness. By the age of seven she regularly took the mic at karaoke bars, winning free drinks for mom and dad. Moving to Los Angeles at 17, she kicked off her career penning music for other artists.

She still writes for other artists including Niall Horan co‐writing half of his album including ‘Slow Hands’, Martin Garrix including his single ‘In The Name of Love’ ft. Bebe Rexha, Thirdstory, Britney Spears, John Legend, JoJo including ‘Too Little Too Late’ and more. She is now stepping into the limelight as an artist with music coming at the top of 2018.

Johnny McDaid is the prolific songwriter and producer behind a wide array of recent chart hits. On March 31, 2017, five of the UK’s top 11 albums included his songs: Ed Sheeran’s ‘÷’ and ‘x’, ‘Human’ by Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, James Blunt’s ‘The Afterlove’ and Zara Larsson’s ‘So Good’. Those songs include Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’, now one of the most popular singles of all time.

Born in Dublin and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland, McDaid moved to London in his late teens and spent a decade leading his band Vega4, whose song ‘Life is Beautiful’ featured prominently in a number of US TV dramas and films. When that band split, Snow Patrol members Jonny Quinn, Gary Lightbody and Nathan Connolly set up a publishing company, Polar Patrol Publishing, and made McDaid their first signing. Johnny has since written soundtracks and numerous songs for movies alongside Snow Patrol frontman, Gary Lightbody. McDaid went on to tour with Snow Patrol during the Fallen Empires Tour and subsequently joined the band. In addition, the Ivor Novello and Grammy nominated songwriter has also worked with diverse artists such as Example, Robbie Williams, Biffy Clyro, Rudimental, Birdy, Kodaline, Faith Hill & Tim McGraw, Anderson East, Beoga and P!nk.

DUBLINSOUNDLAB presents MUSIC CURRENT 2018 Contemporary Music Festival : 12–14 April, 2018 | Sponsored by IMRO

MUSIC CURRENT, Dublin’s annual contemporary music festival turns three this year and returns to Smock Alley Theatre showcasing the of best new Irish and international contemporary electronic music. Hosting concerts, panel discussions and a music commission, this three-day event runs from 12–14 April.

Now established in its third year, MUSIC CURRENT festival offers a unique blend of electronic performance and provides a much-needed platform for the newest contemporary electronic music. This year’s event showcases a distinct celebration of piano and keyboard music and welcomes many new international artists who will perform in Ireland for the first time. Curating this exciting experimental mix of new music, Dublin Sound Lab is delighted to host another cutting edge MUSIC CURRENT for 2018

With this year’s clear keyboard theme – pianos and electronics appearing in each concert – the 2018 programme features composer Stefan Prins (Belgium), pianist Stephane Ginsburgh (Belgium), the virtuosic Yarn|Wire ensemble (USA), accomplished improviser Izumi Kimura (Ire), rising stars of the Irish contemporary electronic music scene Francis Heery and Elis Czerniak, and in a new commission with MUSIC CURRENT the stunning pianist Xenia Pestova (UK) will perform new works with composer Fergal Dowling (Ire), Helga Arias Parra (Spain) and Silvia Rosani (Italy). Xenia who has been called “a powerhouse of contemporary keyboard repertoire” by Tempo Magazine, will also perform a special concert of new works developed during the festival by participating composers – one of whom will
receive this year’s MUSIC CURRENT COMMISSION award of €2,500.

The festival opens with PIANO HERO (Thursday 12 April, 8pm), an immersive cycle for midi-keyboard, grand piano, live-cameras, video and live-electronics (2011–). Stefan Prins makes his Irish debut at MUSIC CURRENT as festival guest composer. Prins is a fearless composer, eager to explore beyond convention and any perceived musical boundaries. His mastery of both technique and technology are evident in this Piano Hero series of pieces. At times whimsical, or even throw-away, the Piano Hero pieces demonstrate Prins’ dedication to revealing the relationship between materials and their context, and to imagining new musical forms through extra-musical materials and technologies. Together with Stephane Ginsburgh (piano) and Florian Bogner (computer music realisation) this team produce a tour de force of aesthetic and technological brilliance.

The virtuosic YARN|WIRE ensemble from Boston (USA) bring two new works by rising stars of the American new music scene – Catherine Lamb (“hypnotic… vivid, evocative” [The Guardian]) and award-winning playwright, performer, composer Rick Burkhardt – together they share a programme with Irish composer Ann Cleare with the Irish premiere of her spellbinding ‘I should live in wires for leaving you’. With these three works Yarn|Wire ensemble fill the space with a ‘theatre of objects’ that must be witnessed. Not to be missed!

One of Ireland’s most inventive improvisers, IZUMI KIMURA, joins forces with two of the country’s most imaginative composers, Francis Heery and Elis Czerniak, to reinvent the ‘prepared piano’ and extend its possibilities with live electronics through two new works specially commissioned for Music Current 2018. These new works are contextualised with John Cage’s seminal Sonatas and Interludes, one of the best-known works from the ‘inventor’ of the prepared piano. This programme is supported by Jeffers Pianos, in association with Galway Jazz Festival and Music Network.

Powerful, refined, sensitive, imaginative, precise, pianist XENIA PESTOVA brings her immense talents to the eight new works selected from the international MUSIC CURRENT ‘call for participation’. This spectacular programme also premieres two new commissions, including Silva Rosani’s award winning new work for piano, resonating metal plates and keyboard instruments. Together with the Irish premiere of Helga Arias Parra’s tactile ‘Astraglossa’, and Fergal Dowling’s new Arts Council commission – Mixed Synthetic Fabrics (for piano and live electronics) – Xenia has assembled a visual and aural feast.

The festival also features an opportunity for the public to engage with composers through a Public Panel Discussion at the Contemporary Music Centre Library, 19 Fishamble Street (Friday 13 April, 6pm). Entitled ‘Are We There Yet?’ the discussion considers current composition trends, performance practice, critical perspectives, and new directions, featuring festival composers Stefan Prins and Ann Cleare, pianist Xenia Pestova, sound artist Sven Anderson and musicologist Adrian Smith (DIT). Moderated by Evonne Ferguson, Director of CMC.

Minister Madigan Launches Programme for European Year of Cultural Heritage

Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Josepha Madigan TD launches Ireland’s programme for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018

The European Year of Cultural Heritage is a European initiative, designed to put a spotlight on Europe’s wealth of cultural heritage, and to involve all citizens in events that promote a sense of belonging to a shared European space. The Department of Culture, Heritage & the Gaeltacht is coordinating Ireland’s Steering Group for the European Year of Cultural Heritage, which is being overseen by the Heritage Council.

Minister Madigan said the aim of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 is threefold: “Firstly, it encourages the sharing and appreciation of Europe’s cultural heritage. Secondly, it seeks to raise awareness of our common history and values and thirdly and most importantly, it is geared towards involving all citizens in events.”

“People and communities across Ireland are the custodians of our heritage in all its richness and are very much at the heart of the programme for this year. This is reflected in the theme for Ireland: ‘Make a Connection’. This theme aims to deepen the connection between people and heritage and I would like to invite and encourage everybody to participate in Ireland’s programme for the Year,” the Minister said.

The Heritage Council, which works to promote, educate and encourage enjoyment in Ireland’s national heritage, is working with cultural institutions, heritage organisations, local councils, community groups and individuals to implement the year-long programme of heritage-related public events and activities to make this year an exceptional one for Irish cultural heritage within the broader European context. The programme of events for the year will be continually expanded throughout 2018.

Chairman of the Heritage Council, Michael Parsons said: “The Heritage Council is very pleased to coordinate the European Year of Cultural Heritage in Ireland, an initiative which presents an excellent opportunity for everybody to make a new connection with our heritage, for example by visiting a museum, getting to know the history behind a historic monument in their locality, or learning about our unique landscapes and wildlife habitats.

“Heritage is our cultural identity, values and traditions that we have inherited from previous generations, live with today, and pass on to future generations. It belongs to all of us and we should all engage with it and contribute to its protection, enhancement and promotion. Our vision for the year is to lay the foundations for a more empowered and connected heritage sector, and better connected audiences.”

National Coordinator of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, Beatrice Kelly said: “The main focus of the Heritage Council – and our partners across the cultural institutions, local heritage organisations and community groups – is to work together to ensure that everybody takes the time to engage with our heritage during this European Year. We hope its benefits will extend beyond 2018. Heritage is something we can all enjoy and it also plays an important role in supporting social cohesion, both within national borders and across Europe.”

The initiatives developed by the Heritage Council include:

  • An events calendar, available on a dedicated European Year of Cultural Heritage website. The calendar will be updated with events and activities – from workshops, exhibitions and lectures to film screenings and digital projects – throughout the year.
  • The Heritage Council is encouraging organisations and groups across the country to submit events for considerationas an EYCH initiative. Successful submissions will be granted the EYCH label and added to the events calendar.
  • The Heritage Council’s annual community grants schemefocuses on the theme ‘Make a Connection’ this year, encouraging communities throughout Ireland to build heritage connections that will last beyond 2018.
  • Le Chéile san Eoraip’, a special initiative coordinated by the Heritage Council, will see local authority heritage officers work with community groups to research heritage links – literary, historical, craft, architectural, linguistic, etc. – between their community and a community in another European country.

FILM Scoring Summer Programme Announced | 30th June – 23rd July 2018 Varna, Bulgaria

Course Profile

A professional, three week summer program for a new generation of film composers, now in its fourth successful year featuring Golden Globe nominated composer Christopher Young and Andy Hill, former Vice President of Music for Walt Disney Films.

Fundamentals of Film Scoring

  • 4 Studio Recordings performed by Varna State Opera Orchestra
  • The Christopher Young Week
  • Music Supervision Workshop
  • Midi Mockups Workshop
  • Fundamentals of Orchestral Conducting
  • 4-Star Hotel Accommodation

The Fundamentals of Film Scoring program will present and provide learners with the practical, creative, conceptual ideas and fundamental techniques of successfully composing a score for the screen. It examines the responsibilities, workflows and processes of the composer, from initial commission through to the final completion of the score. During the program, participants will compose and record four pieces: starting with solo piano, then gradually working on more complex structures such as a nine-member mixed chamber ensemble and a strings/ harp/ piano ensemble; finally, participants will score a scene from a major Hollywood movie and have it recorded with a 38-member orchestra and dubbed to picture.

This program is the perfect starting point for musicians, composers and producers who want to explore composing for scoring for film, game, TV and other visual media. It addresses professional and non-professional musicians, composers and producers, and will provide participants with material for their compositional portfolio, a pre-requisite for successfully pitching for scoring engagements.

“Life-changing“ is the term I hear most associated with this course. At the end of the three weeks, each participant will have scored a real scene for a real movie in a professional recording studio with professional musicians, conductor, scoring supervisor and recording engineer. In addition to the learning experience, each composer leaves with the beginnings of their professional portfolio. It takes years to build up a professional film scoring portfolio, and composers have to start somewhere. This is the place to start. Friends for life are made here in Varna, the surroundings are beautiful, inexpensive and the people very friendly. This year, we have added three new separate programs: MIDI Mock-Ups, Music Supervision, and Fundamentals of Orchestral Conducting”. Derek Gleeson, Program Director
