Beautiful Affair A Journey in Music, Food and Friendship | Mike Hanrahan

From the early days of his music with Stockton’s Wing to training at Ballymaloe Cookery School, food and music have been parallel lines that have kept Mike Hanrahan on track his entire life.

Mike Hanrahan, cook and teacher, songwriter and musician, takes us back stage and into the kitchens of a bohemian, international and surprisingly foodie group of Irish household names, including Ronnie Drew, Finbar Furey, Maura O’Connell, Leslie Dowdall, Pat Shortt, Eleanor Shanley and Sharon Shannon.

Mike penned hit singles ‘Beautiful Affair’ and ‘Walk Away’ for Stockton’s Wing, from which a world of touring and behind-the-scenes escapades began. With affectionate portraits of the legendary personalities he came to know along the way, Beautiful Affair rings with the sheer graft, dedication and serious sense of humour of a life well spent on stage – and in the kitchen.

Mike’s time training with Ballymaloe’s Darina Allen would see his hobby become a second career. Here, he shares favourite recipes from home, friends and professional kitchens across the country – from family recipes cooked on country hearths to vegetarian folk-club grub and tour-bus pressure-cooker stews. Beautiful Affair tells tales of the Irish music scene from the 1970s through to today, and wends its way through a lifelong love affair with Irish food.

This is much more than my story. In Beautiful Affair I introduce you to my friends – who share memories, recipes and quite a few amusing anecdotes that add so much sparkle to my life.’Mike Hanrahan

Mikes professional career began in 1977 with Maura O Connell in a duo called TUMBLEWEED. In 1980 he joined Stockton’s Wing as guitarist, singer and songwriter and recorded the album Take a Chance.

He wrote all the songs on Stockton’s Wing’s ground breaking and critically acclaimed Album LIGHT IN THE WESTERN SKY (1984) including hit songs BEAUTIFUL AFFAIR and WALK AWAY. Stockton’s Wing appeared at all the major European and American Folk Festivals. He also collaborated with Bella Fleck, The Dubliners, Finbar Furey and Maura O Connell plus a BBC Christmas special with Val Doonican. In 1988 they played support to Michael Jacksons Cork gigs during his Thriller tour. In1989 Sammy Davis Junior invited the band to perform at his Lansdowne Road shows in Dublin.

In 1990 Stockton’s Wing went on location to take part in the Noel Pearson/Jim Sheridan film production of the John B. Keane play “THE FIELD” which featured Oscar nominee Richard Harris and John Hurt. Mike Left Stockton’s Wing in 1994 to tour with Finbar Furey and pursue a solo career in Europe recording his first album for German label Wundertutte Someone Like You. Ronnie Drew invited him to collaborate on his 1997 theatre show ‘Ronnie I hardly knew Ya’ and they worked together until Ronnie’s death in 2008. Mike produced four albums for Ronnie, two with Eleanor Shanley which gave us the iconic duet ‘A Couple More Years’. The theatre show had two runs in Dublin and a very successful Off Broadway run at The Irish Theatre. They collaborated with many artists during these years including Liam Clancy, Finbar Furey, Johnny McAvoy, Jim McCann and Paddy Reilly as The Legends of Irish Folk with Mike as Musical Director.

Mike currently performs with a reunited Stockton’s Wing who have signed with Universal records to release a back-catalogue collection in January 2020. He also writes and performs with Leslie Dowdall and is currently writing Remembering Ronnie Drew with Eleanor Shanley for a 2020 extensive tour throughout Europe.

New Alternative Music Festival to take place in Sligo

The inaugural Spilt Milk Audio-Visual Festival will see three days of music, film and art around venues in Sligo town from 22nd-24th November. Bringing national and international artists alongside emerging local acts across a myriad of musical genres, Spilt Milk invites audiences to take a chance on something new.

In addition to the music strand, the festival will see a visual art strand featuring video installations, pop-culture inspired film screenings and a record & zine fair. A key tenet of the festival is to offer a genre-spanning celebration of homegrown musicians, producers and artists and engage with young people additionally.

Performing live at the festival will be a diverse assembly of new voices and musical propositions: this is superbly distilled by Ensemble Economique, the California-based musician Brian Pyle. His music is a multidisciplinary trip into the exotic unknown, deeply emotional and intense, moving seamlessly through sound-collage, dark noir pop, and minimal techno. The experimental trio Percolator masterfully navigate the spaces between subgenres, their sound laced with hypnotic motorik rhythms, Stereolab-recalling vocal harmonies and the miasmic ecstasy of shoegaze. At the other end of the spectrum are Landless who sing unaccompanied traditional songs from Irish, Scottish, English and American traditions in close four-part harmony. Further folk explorations come via Aoife Nessa Frances, a musician and songwriter who draws on 60 psychedelia and Rachael Lavelle who blends electronic soundscapes with elegant piano, found sounds, percussion and spacious, arresting vocals  For fans of straight up post-punk, indie supergroup Grave Goods and youthful four-piece Problem Patterns have come out of the starting blocks with electrifying sets pushing the boundaries of what an alternative band should be. More out-there experimentalism comes from Sligo quartet Gulpt who skew the line between no-wave, free improv and avant. Rounding off the music line up are multi-disciplinary artist Katie Gerardine O’Neill who will perform a 30 minute sound collage, south-Sigo audio-visual artist Dult, improvisational electronic supergroup BB84, Sligo upstarts Marge Bouvier and Dublin-born, Sligo-based harpist Dave Lawless.

Spilt Milk builds on the activities of a group of like-minded individuals each already working within the music landscape and passionate about building a community in Sligo that joins the wider burgeoning alternative and experimental music scene across the island of Ireland. With the help of funding from Sligo Co. Co. and the Creative Ireland (Sligo) Programme, a limited number of free tickets are available to under 23s.

All performances are ticketed separately with some free events; for booking and more info visit: spiltmilkfestival.com

IFPI releases Music Listening 2019 | A global snapshot of music engagement

IFPI, the organisation that represents the recorded music industry worldwide, has released its Music Listening 2019 Report, which examines the ways in which music consumers aged 16 – 64 engage with recorded music across 21 countries.

Report highlights:

• Music listening is up. Respondents typically spend 18 hours per week listening to music – up from 17.8 hours in 2018. This equates to about 2.6 hours – or the equivalent of listening to 52 three-minute songs – daily.

• Most people (54%) identify as ‘loving’ or being ‘fanatical’ about music. Among 16 – 24-year-olds, this rises to 63%.

• Older age groups increasingly embrace audio streaming services. Engagement with audio streaming globally is strong, with 64% of all respondents accessing a music streaming service in the past month – up by about 7% over 2018. The highest rate of growth for engagement is in the 35 – 64-year-old age group, with 54% of that group accessing a music streaming service in the past month (+8% on 2018).

• Copyright infringement remains a challenge for the music ecosystem. 27% of all those surveyed used unlicensed methods to listen to or obtain music in the past month, while 23% used illegal stream ripping services – the leading form of music piracy.

Frances Moore, Chief Executive of IFPI, said: “This year’s report tells an exciting story of how fans are increasingly engaging with music. At a time when multiple forms of media vie for fans’ attention, they are not only choosing to spend more of their time listening to – and engaging with – music but they are doing so in increasingly diverse ways. The enduring partnership between record companies and artists is the bedrock on which this growing, exciting global world of passionate music listeners is built. Record companies work with their artists to help connect them with fans around the world. The report also highlights that the availability of music through unlicensed methods, or copyright infringement, remains a real threat to the music ecosystem. Practices such as stream ripping are still prevalent and return nothing to those who create and invest in music. We continue to coordinate world-wide action to address this.”

Mark Geary + The Stawhall Houseband Announce Details of Irish Autumn Tour

Widely considered to be one of the finest songsmiths of his generation, Dublin-born Mark Geary today announces details of a five-date autumn tour in Ireland with The Strawhall House Band.

Kicking off on Wednesday 16th October with a fully-seated gig at the Workman’s Club in Dublin, Mark Geary + The Strawhall House Band will go on to play four other renowned music venues around Ireland: Campbell’s Tavern in Headford, Co. Galway (Sat. 19.10); The Black Box in Belfast (Sun. 20.10); DeBarra’s in Clonakilty, Co. Cork (Thurs. 24.10); finishing up in Cleere’s in Kilkenny on Saturday 26th October.

Ahead of the tour, on Friday 11th October, Mark Geary + The Strawhall House Band will release a new version of Mark’s song Rosebud, from his 2017 album, The Fool. The single also has a b-side, Mockingbird, written by Fiacre Gaffney and performed by The Strawhall House Band.

Mark Geary has just returned from sold-out tours in Italy and Switzerland. This is the first full tour that he will play with The Strawhall House Band since April 2019.

Mark Geary rose to prominence playing alongside the likes of Jeff Buckley, Sinead O’Connor and Katell Keineg at the famous Sin é Bar in New York’s East Village. Over the last 20 years Mark has toured all over Europe, the US and Australia, and has shared the stage with performers such as The Swell Season, Glen Hansard, The Frames, Josh Ritter, Bell X1, Coldplay, Elvis Costello, The Pretenders and Joe Strummer.

The Strawhall House Band features Fiacre Gaffney, Jack Maher, Vinny Kilcullen and Mark Penny. The band formed from the long running Monday night session at the iconic Strawberry Hall Pub on the Strawberry Beds Road in Dublin. Alongside original songs from their debut album Six Days in May, released in May 2017 on Plateau Records, the band’s repertoire includes covers by great songwriters such as Lowell George, Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Guy Clarke.

It’s this infusion of Americana on the new version of Rosebud that adds a distinctive layer which compliments Mark’s already unique style.

Mark Geary says: “Playing with The Strawhall House Band is an incredible experience. The idea that I know before I even play a note that every choice they make is going to be appropriate for the song is astonishing. For me as a singer, that doesn’t just happen. But with these guys, it happened overnight. ”

Strawhall House Band frontman Fiacre Gaffney says: “There’s a wonderful thing that happens when you’re playing and you don’t have to think about what the other people should be doing. It’s total trust. You meet somebody for the first time and you know you’re on the same wavelength.”

Panel Discussion . Live Performance . Art . Zines

This panel discussion puts live music centre-stage. Some of the most common questions directed at the SelfMade initiative revolve around navigating the live music scene, from advice about performance nerves to the practicalities of getting on the road. This event brings together new and seasoned musicians and live music experts to discuss the steps of building a live profile and how the live scene has impacted their careers.

Featuring..

ÆMAK, Ailbhe Reddy, Gráinne Hunt & Mango Dassle

Hosted by Úna Molloy

What’s it all about?

The Going Live panel will look at some of the fundamental questions about building a live music presence. What do promoters expect when they hear from a new artist? How does your live activity help to strengthen your releases? What is the role of an agent? What are the practicalities of applying for festivals and booking your first tour? What have you learned, loved and hated in your years on the live scene? This discussion aims to give new artists genuine advice on how to self-manage their booking and live promotion, how to plan and budget for their first tour, and looking ahead to build a team around their live-project. The discussion will wrap up with a Q&A session with the audience. Following the SelfMade format, the event will open and close with live, stripped back performances – from Gráinne Hunt and Ailbhe Reddy.

What is SelfMade?

A platform to explore DIY music in Ireland through performance, discussion, and art, with a strong focus on women in music. Their goal is to celebrate the work of DIY musicians and to create a supportive space to explore the realities of getting a music career off the ground. SelfMade is organised independently by artist, Joanna Bain, and musician/label coordinator, Julie Hough (HAVVK, Veta Records) in collaboration with a collective of Irish musicians.
