Festival Programmer Kieran Hanrahan explains: “I am very proud of how the TradFest has grown over the past seven years and has become a firm fixture on the Irish festival calendar. The 2011 festival was attended by over 60,000 people who we hope to see increase this year. The 2011 edition of the festival saw a huge increase of international visitors from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France, Spain and Germany who we look forward to welcoming once again in 2012. Year on year the festival has presented some of the biggest names in Irish music alongside many exciting new performers and musicians. In our headline concerts we have assembled a line-up of some of the most iconic figures in Irish Traditional music coupled with some of the most exciting names in emerging Irish talent. Families will not be disappointed either, with outdoor stages with an emphasis on young Irish music and dance talent; street entertainment and a children’s club are just some of the many free events taking place during the festival. We will also be working in partnership with the Scurlogstown Olympiad who will bring a taste of country life to the city. Other Voices Returns with Series 10 in December

December 2011 heralds the tenth anniversary of Other Voices, the seminal music TV series created by South Wind Blows in partnership with Intune Networks, Fáilte Ireland, IMRO and RTE. Other Voices 10 will take place in Dingle, Co. Kerry from Thursday December 1st to Sunday December 4th 2011 and while the unique and eclectic line-up of artists will remain unannounced ‘til nearer these dates, the tenth instalment of the Other Voices musical adventure promises to be both exhilarating and challenging, with a raft of Irish and international musicians set to make the annual Kerry pilgrimage.

On Monday December 5th, the Irish Music Rights Organisation will be providing a stage for Ireland’s best up and coming songwriters and performers, in the IMRO Other Room, a closed set recording which will feature in the Other Voices TV series, scheduled to be broadcast on RTE Two early in 2012. Speaking of the partnership, Victor Finn, CEO of IMRO said: “IMRO is delighted to once again play a part in bringing together this wonderfully eclectic showcase of music talent. The IMRO Other Room shines a light on some of our finest emerging Irish songwriters, providing them with a unique platform to reach out to new audiences. Roll on 10 more years”.

The show was born in Dingle in December 2002, presented by Glen Hansard, who would five years later step up to accept an Oscar for Best Original Song. That first show featured sets from Mundy, who was to become one of our biggest home grown stars and Damien Rice, who became a multi-million selling international artist. Over the years the presenters have changed and the line up has swelled with international talent but Dingle’s St. James’ Church, the central line, the glorious setting of Lilliputian proportions, has always remained.

What can be revealed at this stage is that Other Voices 10 will be hosted by a brand new face, that of internationally acclaimed Irish actor Aidan Gillen, whose love of film is equalled only by his passion for music. Of taking on hosting duties of Other Voices, Gillen said “I’m more than excited to be working on Other Voices this year. I only became an actor in the hope of one day getting on Desert Island Discs and playing records – this is way better. I’ve spent a large part of the last few years at the end of the Dingle peninsula and witnessed first-hand how well this festival fits this place. Roll on December!”.

Another new element to this year’s Other Voices recording events will be the ticketing system. Due to the confined seating in St. James’ Church, only a handful of tickets were ever made available to purchase and those with faster online connections and superior typing skills tended to win the toss of the coin every time! This time out, all tickets for the public will be made available through competitions, so all Other Voices fans will have a fair chance to win, be it on the Other Voices Facebook Page (OtherVoices), radio outlets, print media or online sites across Ireland. All competitions will be pre-announced on the Other Voices Facebook page.

What is absolutely certain is that the town of Dingle will be alive and kicking during the recordings of Other Voices 10. The community of Dingle are this year introducing a brand new festival to run alongside the Other Voices events from December 1st to 4th. Feile Na Soilse (Dingle Festival of Light) will be a four day celebration of the culture, music, food and community of Dingle, with open air Farmers Markets, Other Voices Music Trails, Christmas Carol Choral Competitions, Treasure Hunts, a Children’s Lantern Parade, Santa ‘Under the Sea’ at Oceanworld and a huge range of activities for grown-ups and kids alike. There will be plenty of hotels and guesthouses to rest weary heads, lashings of hot whiskies and open turf fires, the finest gourmet delights and Christmas shopping bargains galore. To celebrate the Other Voices recordings, there will be a raffle each night in one of Dingle’s bars for a pair of tickets to attend that nights recording, so even if music fans don’t win tickets in advance, they will be in with a shot to nab a pair while enjoying Feile Na Soilse! For more information on the festival log on to www.facebook.com/dinglefestivaloflight

Keep up to date on all Other Voices news, announcements, line-up additions and the chance to win precious tickets at www.facebook.com/OtherVoices. You can also follow the action on Twitter (OtherVoicesLive) and check out some fantastic music from Other Voices on the YouTube page (OtherVoicesLive)

World Premiere of Kilcormac, a New Cantata by Vincent Kennedy

The world premiere of Kilcormac, a new Cantata by Vincent Kennedy commissioned by Offaly County Council will take place in the KDA Hall in Kilcormac, County Offaly on Sunday 27th November at 4pm.

The new work combines choral, solo voice, instrumental and music in traditional Irish idiom and is inspired by stories, events, history and poetry on many facets of life in Kilcormac past and present.  The piece will begin with a look back to the very beginning when the first men and women recorded in Ireland, lived around present day Kilcormac. Another movement is based on words from the ancient Kilcormac missal. The middle section is inspired by the story of the 500 year old wooden Pieta of Kilcormac that was hidden in the bog by six local men in safety from Cromwell’s advancing army. There it lay covered in peat until the last person who knew its location was carried on his deathbed aged 90 to the bog.  When he pointed out where he and others had buried it 60 years earlier the people dug down and re-discovered the Pieta perfectly preserved.  It is venerated to this day in the parish church of Kilcormac.

Vincent has been working with the pupils of the local national and secondary schools and with local choirs, singers and instrumentalists and the new composition stems from a very collaborative process with all these elements. In addition Vincent invited Offaly native Eleanor Lamb to work alongside him with the national school children making their own instruments and also using the enormous array of percussion instruments Eleanor has collected from all parts of the world. Under Eleanor’s guidance the children are creating their own compositions and sound pictures for the performance inspired by the bog and local field names.

Also performing in Vincent Kennedy’s Band for this world premiere is Matthew Manning (Oboe), Adele O’Dwyer (Cello), Oisín Kennedy (Percussion), Patrick Hughes (Saxophones), Niall O’Sullivan (Trumpets), Aisling Kennedy (Soprano), Cliona Warren (Bassoon), Karen Abe (Keyboards and Trumpet).

The award winning poet Ann Egan, whose has family ties with Kilcormac, has written a new poem which Ann will read as part of the performance accompanied by solo cello.  Vincent met Ann at a recent stay in Annaghmakerrig and the collaboration was born.  The great dual star Offaly GAA man Liam Currums (only man alive to win back to back All-Ireland medals in football and Hurling and also to receive All Stars in both Football and Hurling), a native of Kilcormac has also accepted Vincent’s invitation to narrate the opening of Kilcormac.

Biography

Based between London and LA, Irish-born artist RuthAnne draws on the distinctive energy of both cities to create a dynamic and soulful sound like no other. The unstoppable singer/songwriter has an impressive line-up of tunes behind her, created for pop-artists including Jojo's hit single with Billy Steinberg, "Too Little too late," which skyrocketed from number 66 to number 3 on the Billboard hot 100 chart in just one week in the US, breaking previous records – the biggest leap in Billboard chart history. The platinum smash went on to sell over a million units. And that’s just the jumping off point.

RuthAnne has written songs for chart-topping artists including Katharine McPhee, Leona Lewis, winner of Finnish pop idol Anna Abreu and winner of South African idol Jody Williams and Australian band Shakaya – and the list goes on. In 2007, RuthAnne had songs on three platinum albums in the US and Europe, and officially became Ireland's youngest songwriter ever to achieve these honors (she won the Best Pop song Award at the 2007 ASCAP Awards). More stellar cuts and singles written by RuthAnne, including album title track "Turn it up", album track "My Love", and hit single “Broken Arrow”, recorded by British platinum-selling popstar Pixie Lott, followed in 2010.

Recently, she collaborated with Grammy winning producer John Shanks to co-write with Westlife for their ‘Greatest Hits’ album, released November 2011. They have three songs on the album including an upcoming single ‘Beautiful World’. RuthAnne has yet another upcoming single, ‘Love You to Death’, for Pixie Lott, penned with US hit-maker Toby Gad.

While she may have been burning brightly behind the scenes, RuthAnne was never content being just a music-industry insider – and now her journey is taking a major turn, into the spotlight. RuthAnne’s time to shine as a solo artist is now. After honing her skills over the past four years writing for, and collaborating with, many of the UK’s hottest stars and producers, (Leona Lewis, Sugarbabes, Labrynth, Ben Hudson, Ed Drewett, Devlin, X-Factor winning artist Alexander Burke, Cher Lloyd, JLS, Loick Essien, Tinchy Stryder, Professor Green, Westlife, among them), and having worked extensively with many internationally renowned producers (John Shanks, Julian Bunetta, Jeff Bashker, Red One, Toby Gad, JR Rotem to name a few), RuthAnne is putting all of that experience and creativity into her own album of infectiously catchy soulful-pop, currently being recorded in Los Angeles.
Her first artist feature is with Brit rap star Professor Green, on the hook she penned for one of his upcoming singles, ‘Remedy’, followed by a collaboration with Brit grime rapper Tinchy Stryder. RuthAnne’s unprecedented foundations in the industry along with her songwriting pedigree and irrepressible ambition, talent and unique vision have marked her a rising star to watch – and a force to be reckoned with! Keep your ears to the ground.
