Candice Gordon

Candice Gordon

‘I See a Demon’ is the first single from the debut album, ‘Before the Sunset Ends’ by Candice Gordon.

Born in South Africa, Candice moved to Ireland in 1989. She began playing music when she came to Ireland and immediately was drawn to writing. After school she lived in France and then London. She came back to Ireland to record her debut album ‘Before the Sunset Ends’ with Shane MacGowan. The album is influenced by folktales and is themed around the fallibility of human nature.

Her first single ‘I See a Demon’ is inspired by the common illusionary phenomenon of visualising devilish faces in dark rooms, and the visitations of various “demons” during the time of recording the album. The video was self animated in a flat in Berlin.

‘I See a Demon’ is available now from all good digital outlets.

RuthAnne Cunningham Hitting The Big Time

RuthAnne Cunningham Hitting The Big Time

Dublin songwriter, RuthAnne Cunningham, is enjoying considerable success at the moment with songs featuring on recent albums by Westlife, Pixie Lott and Professor Green. Based between London and LA, the unstoppable singer/songwriter has an impressive line-up of tunes behind her created for pop-artists including Jojo’s hit single with Billy Steinberg, “Too Little too late,” which skyrocketed from number 66 to number 3 on the Billboard hot 100 chart in just one week in the US.

RuthAnne has written songs for chart-topping artists including Katharine McPhee, Leona Lewis, winner of Finnish pop idol Anna Abreu and winner of South African idol Jody Williams and Australian band Shakaya. In 2007, RuthAnne had songs on three platinum albums in the US and Europe, and officially became Ireland’s youngest songwriter ever to achieve these honors, also winning an ASCAP Award for Best Pop Song in 2007. More stellar cuts and singles written by RuthAnne, including album title track “Turn it up”, album track “My Love”, and hit single “Broken Arrow”, recorded by British platinum-selling popstar Pixie Lott, followed in 2010.

Recently, she collaborated with Grammy winning producer John Shanks to co-write with Westlife for their ‘Greatest Hits’ album, released November 2011. They have three songs on the album including an upcoming single ‘Beautiful World’. RuthAnne has yet another upcoming single, ‘Love You to Death’, for Pixie Lott, penned with US hit-maker Toby Gad.

After honing her skills over the past four years writing for, and collaborating with, many of the UK’s hottest stars and producers, (Leona Lewis, Sugarbabes, Labrynth, Ben Hudson, Ed Drewett, Devlin, X-Factor winning artist Alexander Burke, Cher Lloyd, JLS, Loick Essien, Tinchy Stryder, Professor Green, Westlife, among them), and having worked extensively with many internationally renowned producers (John Shanks, Julian Bunetta, Jeff Bashker, Red One, Toby Gad, JR Rotem to name a few), RuthAnne is putting all of that experience and creativity into her own album of infectiously catchy soulful-pop, currently being recorded in Los Angeles.

Her first artist feature is with Brit rap star Professor Green, on the hook she penned for one of his upcoming singles, ‘Remedy’, to be followed by a collaboration with Glee TV star Kevin McHale”. RuthAnne’s unprecedented foundations in the industry along with her songwriting pedigree and irrepressible ambition, talent and unique vision have marked her a rising star to watch – and a force to be reckoned with!

With growth in all areas of this booming industry, there is opportunity and cause to explore the music potential here at home.

A new generation of Irish game composers is the vision of GMI.

Tradfest Music Congress 2012 | IMRO Member Discount

Date: Wednesday 25th January 2012
Location: Wood Quay Venue, Dublin 8
Time: 9.00am to 5.30pm

A one-day music conference specifically aimed at individuals and companies whose working interests lie within the genres of traditional music and folk music.

The music industry as a whole faces precarious times, and in such a climate, there is always a danger for less commercial genres to be marginalized to the point of near extinction. It is imperative that we do not let that happen to our traditional music industry, whose roots are so deeply ingrained in our culture and whose heritage paved the way for international success for many artists, not only from within that genre, but from across the musical spectrum.

In bringing this sector of the industry together, we seek to explore and establish practices to help ensure that Ireland can continue to successfully produce and export it’s traditional music to all corners of the globe.
The day will consist of a series of discussion panels covering a range of subjects affecting the industry as it is today, with specific emphasis on how those issues relate to those working within traditional or folk music. The panels, consisting of industry experts, will be aimed to inform, educate and inspire debate on crucial issues. In the ever changing face of the music industry, there is always new information to acquire for newcomers and seasoned professionals alike.

The Panels

Trad Music in the Digital Age
A comprehensive discussion around the current digital landscape of the music industry, and its potential future, and in particular how this relates to those working within the fields of traditional and folk music. This panel will discuss the various aspects in which the digital era impacts on our business, including marketing, promotion, retailing, streaming, licensing, copyright protection and social media.

Trad Music at Home
The panel will look at how traditional music is treated at home in Ireland and ways to maintain and strengthen it’s significance and opportunities here. What support is available and what support should be available from a cultural, media and industry perspective? Is there still a commercial market for a traditional music act in Ireland?

Trad Music Abroad
This panel looks at the huge appetite for Irish traditional music across the globe and will discuss ways to maintain and strengthen the demand for our music internationally. What are the best routes for exporting traditional music worldwide, either through retail, marketing, promotion or touring? Are we making the most out of the international market available to us?

Trad Music and Money
As well as the cultural significance that our traditional music provides, it is important for its future that it remains a commercially viable genre of music. This panel will discuss ways to maintain and strengthen the commercial aspect of our industry. It will look at what available sources there are for funding new projects in the traditional music field as well as the various revenue income streams available to a traditional music artist.

An IMRO Member Discount Rate of €45 is available for this conference (normal price €65). Simply insert IMRO into the promotional code box on the booking form (linked below)

Each year, the European music conference and showcase festival highlights one European country with a flourishing musical climate. In previous editions focus countries have been France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Norway and The Netherlands.

As part of the focus, subjects important for the Irish market, will be highlighted during the four day conference. Several panels will feature Irish managers, Irish festival and radio representatives and Irish music journalists, who will share their knowledge on the Irish market and relations with other European countries. In addition there will be an Irish networking reception bringing together European live music professionals and Irish representatives.

Furthermore, the Irish singer/songwriter James Vincent McMorrow has been announced as a winner of an European Border Breaker Award for the success of his album Early in the Morning. McMorrow and the nine other winners will receive their awards in a televised ceremony hosted by TV personality and musician Jools Holland at Eurosonic Noorderslag, on 11th January 2012. The ceremony – including performances by most of the winning acts – will be broadcast by Dutch National Television (NOS/NTR) and will also receive European coverage through TV channels and radio stations.

Peter Smidt, Creative Director of Eurosonic Noorderslag, explains the festival's choice for Ireland:
"Ireland has a long and strong music tradition and has been influential to modern rock, punk and pop music. Ireland and RTE 2fm, in particular, have brought many great artists to Eurosonic Noorderslag from the start. Lots of Irish artists are making great music and are very successful worldwide. Enough reasons to put the focus on Ireland in 2012 at Eurosonic Noorderslag."
