GESAC welcomes the EU Commission’s initiative to propose a directive on collective rights management societies

European Authors Societies have a major role and constitute a real asset in the development of a European internal market for creative content to the mutual benefit of creators, users, consumers and society as a whole: more than 60% of the total rightholders’ remuneration collected in the world by authors societies is coming from the EU (4.6 billion euros), 86% of which from the music sector.

Authors Societies members of GESAC are actively and constantly working to achieve the highest standard of efficiency and transparency.

Véronique Desbrosses, GESAC General Manager saidAuthors’ societies are a critical link between creation and the digital economy. It is important that relationships with rightholders and users are based on confidence and harmonised high standards of transparency and efficiency are the way forward to achieve this. In many cases our own rules and practices are already fullfilling the standards of the draft Directive. We want to be trendsetters and are happy to contribute to grant to all european stakeholders the benefit of the most efficient collective administration system”.

Cross border management of rights for musical works in the digital environment, an issue which is on the agenda of the EU Commission for years, is of vital importance. There are today more than 300 online services in the EU offering more than 20 million tracks from different repertoires from the entire EU and the rest of the world which illustrates the vitality of the business. Early in 2010, EU digital market grew by 22% while the US was up by only 4%. In the first half of 2011, digital sales in Europe grew by a further 23 per cent — more than three times the global rate.

Authors Societies members of GESAC have largely contributed to such developments by providing access to online services of the musical works on which their activity is based.

GESAC welcomes the initiative from the Commission to establish a framework intended to facilitate the reaggregation of repertoires and to guaranty an appropriate level of efficiency in the licensing of musical rights.

Christophe Depreter, President of GESAC said “There is undoubtedly room for improvement in this field and greater legal certainty for authors’ societies to voluntarily aggregate as many rights as possible is key. Music industry is changing, CMSs are on a new track. Offering the largest possible repertoire to users while ensuring an effective protection of authors’ rights and a genuine cultural diversity is what we aim for”.

GESAC is ready to constructively cooperate with the EU institutions so as to improve the proposal where necessary to meet the needs and challenges of collective rights management in the global economy.
Background information on GESAC

The European Grouping of Societies of Authors and Composers (GESAC) represents 34 of the main copyright management societies (authors’ societies) in the European Union, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, administering the rights and remuneration of almost 700 000 authors, composers and writers in a variety of sectors (music, audiovisual, literary and visual and graphic arts) and music publishers. Behind authors’ societies are thus hundreds thousands of authors and composers who are members of these CMS and managing and controlling them.

Hilltown New Music Festival Enters Its Fifth Year

The IMRO sponsored Hilltown New Music Festival, Castlepollard, is in its landmark fifth year. The festival showcases Irish and International contemporary music, presenting innovative new work to audiences and providing a sustainable place for contemporary music in the Midlands. The 2012 festival takes place from the 20th to the 22nd of July, and will be based around a series of concerts as well as sonic and visual art installations presented over three days.

The festival opens on Friday night with a special gala concert dedicated to the works of iconic 20th century composer John Cage marking the centenary of his birthday. Performers include the Quiet Music Ensemble, Kirkos Ensemble, Strange Attractor, among many others. Before the concert, listeners will have the opportunity to taste food by the Westmeath Slow Food Convivium, who are preparing a taster platter especially for the festival.

The weekend will provide an exciting selection of world class contemporary instrumental and electronic music by emerging and renowned composers. The programme focuses on the relationship between contemporary music and the visual arts.

The centrepiece of the concert programme are two performances by the resident Hilltown Ensemble on Saturday and Sunday, featuring works for voice and strings by composers based in Ireland, augmented by distinguished international guest performances. Among these guests are English musician, sound artist and author David Toop, a well-known figure on the international experimental and improvised music scene; pioneer German electronic musician and composer Asmus Tietchens, and virtuoso violinist Barbara Lüneburg, who has enchanted Hilltown audiences with new programmes of cutting-edge new music each year since the inception of the festival.

Hilltown New Music Festival will take place in the beautiful and picturesque grounds of the medieval castle keep of the Hilltown House, an 18th century listed building. The buildings have grown organically over the centuries and create a unique setting for the 21st century events. This year the festival welcomes anyone who an interest in and an appreciation for music and arts, from adults to children. There will also be guesthouse accommodation and camping available nearby.

As was done for the previous festivals, there was an open international call for audio works, which received a tremendous response of close to a hundred submissions from all over the world. Selected works will be presented in a special listening room during the Hilltown New Music Festival in July 2012.

Tickets are priced at €15 for Friday night (€25 incl. Slow Food Taster Platter) and at €20 for Saturday or Sunday. There is also a festival pass available at a reduced rate of €45 (€55 incl. Slow Food Taster Platter).

Improving Rules Governing Authors’ Societies and Online Licensing Benefit Creators Worldwide

IMRO welcomes EU proposal for a directive on collective management of copyright and related rights and multi-territorial licensing of rights in musical works for online uses in the internal market.

“IMRO is a membership based organisation, owned and governed by its membership and it has consistently set high standards for transparency and accountability to its members and end users who benefit from the public use of copyright music.  IMRO is a leading performing rights organisation, with a monthly royalty distribution schedule, making it one of the most efficient performing rights organisations internationally.  A full and comprehensive guide to IMRO distribution polices is available on the IMRO website https://imro.ie/music-creators/imro-distribution-policies/

IMRO hosted the CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers) General Assembly in Dublin in June.  It was at this gathering of international performing rights organisations that IMRO instigated and championed a change to CISAC Professional Rules regarding the frequency of distributions between international collection agencies. We are delighted that due to our actions a new policy has been established which requires all performing rights organisations to raise the frequency of royalty distributions between societies to a minimum of quarterly distributions.  This is good news for music creators throughout the world.” states Victor Finn, IMRO, Chief Executive.

Authors’ societies assist creators in managing and licensing their rights and in collecting and distributing their royalties fairly and efficiently. It is in creators’ interest that their works are widely available on every legal platform. Authors’ societies around the world have been licensing an increasing number of online music services and are constantly seeking solutions to allow them to issue multi-territorial licences for the use of global repertoire, while protecting the economic value of their rights.

“Facilitating the digital distribution of creators’ works is in the best interests of authors and helps promote cultural diversity, said Kenth Muldin, Chair of CISAC Board of Directors.  “The EU initiative will have an impact outside Europe and will be looked at by other countries in developing their domestic rules on collective management. CISAC and its members are willing to work with the Commission and the Parliament to create a useful framework for collective management in the offline and online environment.”

Europe, and especially Western Europe, is the most dynamic and efficient region in terms of collective management of copyright. Royalties collected by authors’ societies on behalf of creators for the use of their works in the region topped 4.6bn EUR (61% of worldwide collections).

Japanese Popstars And Duke Special To Headline North-West Digital Festival

Derry’s CultureTECH festival has today announced details of an impressive music lineup including Derry’s own The Japanese Popstars and a free, public performance from Duke Special.

The CultureTECH festival, which takes place at the end of August in Derry-Londonderry, is being billed as a four-day celebration of digital technology, media and music and expects to attract over 500 industry delegates alongside some 8-10,000 members of the public across a conference, film screenings and live music events.

As festival organiser Mark Nagurski explained: “CultureTECH aims to celebrate digital media in all its forms – from how we make new things to how we consume them – and music is at the very heart of that. We are delighted to be able to welcome so many great acts, and given the lineup, expect this to be a huge event.”

In addition to a Friday night headline event featuring The Japanese Popstars (LIVE), Paul Woolford and Psycatron (back to back) and Screendeath, the organisers are planning live music events across the city centre – many of which will be free to attend.

Hometown electronic collective Culture Glitch will open the festival with an event that will be streamed live in New York. The Liverpool Sound City festival, Derry-based record label Smalltown America and hubb.it will host bands and acoustic showcase events across the entire festival. The Dublin Laptop Orchestra will showcase original music made “using lots of laptops, hands, golf controllers, and a wireless router”. And Duke Special will play a free, public gig in the city on the Saturday afternoon.

CultureTECH will also play host to the debut performance of a unique collaboration between traditional Irish vocalist Grainne Holland and electronic producer Figure of 8. The audiovisual set will be accompanied by surreal visuals and a live string quartet courtesy of Serenity Strings.

The live music lineup and music industry sessions are being sponsored by Seagate, who have been major supporters of the creative industries in the city for many years. Brian Burns from Seagate said: “The creative industries, particularly games and music, are a hugely important growth area for Seagate. As digital content, such as music, video, photos and games, becomes more integrated into everyday life, the idea of static data storage is becoming obsolete.  Today, people want to access, share and secure digital content using dynamic storage solutions that give them the freedom to do business, and to create and interact at any time and anywhere. Seagate is in the business of delivering the advanced digital storage solutions that meet these needs. We’ve also been in Derry for nearly 20 years and have a long-standing association with the creative industries here. With that in mind, we’re enormously excited to be associated with what will undoubtedly be a fantastic event.”

Tickets for many of the music gigs will go on sale this week via the CultureTECH website at www.culturetech.co with prices ranging from £6-£12. Festival passes, currently on sale at £49 (£29 for students), include access to all music events, film screenings, parties and the main conference.
