The Boys Are Back In Town

It’s not often that a Lord Mayor actively supports the Rock Community, but in Dublin 2011, that’s exactly what’s happening! Dublin City Council is working with local street arts group MaSamba, to create a new pageant for Dublin City – ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’

‘The Boys Are Back in Town’ is based on the life and work of Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, and will take the form of a street pageant through the centre of Dublin. This year is a big year for all things Thin Lizzy, and in tough financial times, it is heartening to see the local authority backing a project honouring a Dublin icon and a great band.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Gerry Breen says “I am very happy to be supporting this gig which will commemorate one of Dublin’s favourite musicians.  I encourage the people of Dublin to come to Grafton Street on 20th August to support MaSamba and remember Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy.”

"Twenty-five years after his death, Phil Lynott still holds a special place in the hearts of Dubliners, and we are delighted to have this opportunity to honour him and his work on the very streets where Phil once busked, as a struggling musician" enthused Simeon Smith, MaSamba’s Creative Director.

MaSamba has chosen some of the better-known Thin Lizzy songs, and designed costumes and choreography to represent them. For example, a group of Celtic warriors will perform the song ‘Emerald’, and a group of stylised heavy metal fans will represent the song ‘The Rocker’, complete with leather jackets, patches and electric guitars!

These costumes are currently being produced especially for the project in Sao Paulo, Brasil, and will bring the colour and exhuberance of Brasilian Carnival to the Streets of Dublin.

In terms of performers, this pageant will be a collaboration of several partners. The musicians will be MaSamba members but the dancers will come from a range of different places. Masamba will continue their long-standing partnership with the Brasilian community in Dublin, under the direction of main dancer, Kelly Baldonado.
We will also be working with young people from the Smithfield and Darndale areas of Dublin, through the local youth services and some excellent dance and drama facilitators.

While the offer of funding from Dublin City Council is seen as a huge vote of confidence, and support for one of Dublin’s best known sons, MaSamba still needs considerable funding to complete this ambitious project. They will be placing the project on the innovative Fund:it website in coming days in the hopes of getting public support to make ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ a truly memorable event.

The performance is set to take place on Phil Lynott’s birthday, which is Saturday, August 20th. We will set out from South King Street, outside the Gaiety Theatre, parade down and back up Grafton Street, finishing at the Phil Lynott statue.

Pete Holidai-The Devil’s Guitar

Radiator from Space delivers exotic cinematic space age pop.

Pete Holidai has consistently explored the margins of pop music. From his pivotal role in Ireland's punk
movement to his guidance of other Irish mavericks he has preferred the shadowy paths to the well travelled
highways.

Pete Holidai has always roared down the path least travelled. Determination and innovation have earmarked
the career of the legendary punk guitarist who launched his career with Dublin's Radiators From Space. The
band challenged conservative Ireland during the seventies, opening the door for other mavericks rejecting the
status quo. They were the first band in Ireland to declare their kinship with the 'new wave' bursting from
London and New York in 1976-77. Their pioneering spirit saw them nurture acts like The Undertones and Stiff
Little Fingers who supported them in their early careers.

“They were Ireland's first punk band” according to Bono, one of the musicians influenced by the band. Their
sound encouraged him to perform: “not only can we play it but this is the kind of shit I like”. When future
Pogue Phil Chevron threatened to 'smash my Telecaster through the television screen' the instrument was
wielded by Pete Holidai.

Holidai recalls the sheer bewilderment of some Irish audiences to their high octane guitar-charged rebel rock.
At one early gig in the West of Ireland the band were confronted with a non-responsive audience. After the
show young attendees approached them saying they liked the music but “didn't know how to dance to it.” In
a country where conservative showbands held a near monopoly on youth entertainment original acts like The
Radiators were a rare species.

They were equal parts Gene Vincent and Johnny Rotten; as much James Joyce as Joe Strummer. Holidai's
dexterity gave the Radiators a guitar attack that was new to Ireland. Commercial success often eludes the
path finders, so it was with The Radiators, but not before they presented the acclaimed 'Ghostown' album
produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, Morrissey, Iggy Pop, Manic Street Preachers). It is an album still
acknowledged by many including HotPress magazine as one of the best Irish albums of all time.

Their work from the ‘Ghostown’ era retains an icy poignancy today. The songs are filled with shadows, secrets,
contenders, strangers, ghosts and lonely rebel souls. The characters were witnessing the “monochrome
snapshot” yet desiring the “Kodachrome dream”.

Their desire for freedom proved too much for the punk audience which had become less adventurous. The
Radiators left a lot of unfinished business. Some of this was revisited by the critically acclaimed (2006)
'Trouble Pilgrim' album.

Holidai continued mentoring and guiding the careers of young Irish musicians when the Radiators faded from
view. He honed his production, management and playing skills with Light A Big Fire and Engine Alley and
many others. This was publicly acknowledged with the Smithwicks/HotPress Producer award 1991
Yet a personal project was fermenting at the back of his mind.

Holidai researched extensively the esoteric 1950s lounge and exotica albums by leaders like Martin Denny, Les
Baxter and Enoch Light All Stars. He decided to bring his rebel rocker persona to this lush orchestrated groovy
sound. The result is 2011's The Devil's Guitar. It is an album imprinted with lost and lonely souls. The “secret
thinkers” from his early work are alive in the back-streets of European bohemia.

Holidai's take on exotica hints at a shadowy narrative. In The Devil's Guitar a character called Johnny stalks
the back-streets of bohemian European cities. The equally mysterious Lunar Girl's destiny seems entwined
with the rebel hero. The mood is captured by Holidai's guitar and exotic percussion. At times the sound pulses
like Peter Gunn lost in a Mediterranean dream.

When The Radiators sang: “it's the story of the movie: but they never made the movie” it seemed like an
adventurous generation had been forgotten. With 'The Devil's Guitar' that unmade movie may at least have
the soundtrack it deserves.

Ciara Sidine-Shadow Road Shining

‘If you like the Robert Plant and Alison Krauss album Raising Sand or anything by Emmylou Harris, you’ll be on the right musical wavelength for Shadow Road Shining.’ Irish Times

Dublin singer/songwriter Ciara Sidine’s self-released debut album Shadow Road Shining – ‘an alt country classic’ Hot Press – has been launched to critical acclaim in Ireland and beyond in May 2011.
Dubbed ‘Celtic Americana’, Sidine’s sound is inspired by the roots of American music and by her own Irish musical upbringing. ‘A remarkably assured piece of work’ Daily Telegraph
‘One of the best roots albums of the year’ Irish World
In 2011 Ciara was picked from over 500 applicants to make her television debut on ‘Other Voices’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUTZLzRBNXQ. She recently appeared on ‘The View’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFmGbrNhRrY, along with a session on Pat Kenny’s radio show, leading to a sell out album launch gig in Dublin’s The Sugar Club on 13 May where she took to the stage with her band The Sidelines, comprising some of Ireland’s top musicians (Conor Brady, Cian Boylan and Paul Moore). She received a standing ovation for her performance.
‘Exquisitely beautiful . . . each track has the feel of a timeless classic . . . the secret ingredient to them all is the sheer abandonment that Sidine offers through her ethereal voice . . . recommended from the highest heights.’ Hot Press
Compared variously to Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Maria McKee and, closer to home, Mary Black and Maura O’Connell, Ciara is receiving as much attention for her fine singing voice as for her melodies and poetic, emotionally resonant lyrics.
‘A finely rounded, richly produced album of Americana . . . vocals and lyrics so distilled they reveal fresh angles with each repeated exposure’ Irish Times
She recently sang in The Abbey Theatre Dublin in author Joseph O’Connor The Music of Ghost Light, and O’Connor says of her: ‘Ciara Sidine has one of those voices that fills the heart with light and hope – a rare and precious gift – and the power with which she shares it in the live situation is unforgettable.’
Shadow Road Shining is receiving airplay and review across roots/alt country stations/publications in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
‘Americana [with] an unmistakably Celtic feel to its poetic lyrics and confident vocals’ UNCUT
CIARA SIDINE IS AVAILABLE FOR FESTIVALS TO PLAY AN ACOUSTIC SET (ACCOMPANIED BY CONOR BRADY ON GUITAR) OR TO PLAY WITH HER BAND THE SIDELINES.

LaFaro-New Album/Single

Polar opposite to the delicate poise of the influential jazz bassist Scott LaFaro from which this Belfast quartet takes their name, LaFaro are a wrecking ball of a band. Their rhythmic post-hardcore is designed to pulverize dance floors and leave no bottle of beer undrunk – this is music distilled to its fundamental elements – 'We hark back to time when rock music was still fun' states lead rabble-rouser Johnny Black ominously.

Recalling The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Helmet (with whom the band have toured Europe) and NI heroes Therapy? LaFaro have character, chops and emotion oozing through every seedy riff 'I love to write about life's dark little secrets – the things we all know happen but never get discussed'.

On 'Easy Meat' their sophomore offering, LaFaro have transplanted their sound into a black, hellish and apocalyptic space. Gone is the echo of grunge, it has been replaced with metal's electric chair. Part meditation on Northern Ireland, part metal concept album 'Easy Meat' is a dense, troubling and exhilaratingly kick ass affair – these are riffs to shoplift to.

The LP will be out at the back end of the summer, preceded in June by a limited edition 7” vinyl release of the title track and select, UK/Ireland tour dates with pop-punk princes Ash:

06/06/11 – Whelan’s – Dublin, Ireland ***SOLD OUT***
07/06/11 – Playhouse – Portrush, Northern Ireland
08/06/11 – Empire – Belfast, Northern Ireland

Irish Artists Focus of Eurosonic Noorderslag 2012

Hot on the heels of a major success at The Great Escape festival in the UK Ireland has just been announced as the country focus for Eurosonic Noorderslag 2012, one of the most important music events in Europe.

Eurosonic Noorderslag is Europe's main conference and showcase festival for European music. With 290 European acts performing in more than 40 venues and over 3,000 music professionals from all over Europe attending, Eurosonic Noorderslag is the ultimate place to be for music lovers and industry professionals.
Ireland and Irish bands have been making their mark at international showcases. The selection of Ireland as the spotlight country for Eurosonic Noorderslag 2012 is a real vote of confidence in the quality and range of Irish music currently available.

Music from Ireland, in partnership with Culture Ireland and IMRO, produce a number of Irish music showcases at events such as The Great Escape, South by Southwest and Canadian Music Week.
In the past few years Eurosonic Noorderslag focus countries have been France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Norway and The Netherlands. Peter Smidt, Creative Director of Eurosonic Noorderslag, explains the festival's choice for Ireland: "Ireland has a long and strong music tradition and has been influential to modern rock, punk and pop music. Ireland and RTE 2fm, in particular, have brought many great artists to Eurosonic Noorderslag from the start. Lots of Irish artists are making great music and are very successful worldwide. Enough reasons to put the focus on Ireland in 2012 at Eurosonic Noorderslag."

The Ireland focus will increase the number of Irish bands showcasing at Eurosonic Noorderslag and will also include panel discussions and guest speakers. Ireland at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2012 will be presented by Music from Ireland, in partnership with Culture Ireland and IMRO, and in association with 2fm.

Storyfold-‘Rocket Science’

Rising Irish 5-piece Storyfold will release their debut album Rocket Science, on Friday, May 20th and celebrate it with an exclusive headline performance in Whelan's, Dublin.

The band’s lead single from the album, “Trick Of Light”, has received widespread radioplay and has been playlisted on 2FM, Spin 1038, Spin South West, Shannonside, KCLR and Ocean FM to name but a few. The official video, cut by U2 editor Stephen O’Connell, is an instant hit on Youtube.

All of this has resulted in the band being confirmed for a slew of summer music festivals including The Sea Sessions, Temple House Festival, Indiependence and the list continues to grow.

Rocket Science has been produced by Greg Haver (yes, THE Greg Haver. The one who has previously twiddled knobs for Manic Street Preachers, Lost Prophets, Super Furry Animals, Bullet for My Valentine, Catatonia and CODES) and early feedback suggests it’s going to be massive. It was recorded in Modern World Studios, Bristol where the band had to juggle studio time with soul icon Sade!

These truly are exciting times for Storyfold and their loyal fanbase. Their debut single, Delphine Wakes, was a massive radio hit and the follow up, Behind Closed Doors, proved just as popular. Airplay led to dozens of gigs, rave-reviews led to more, including an incredible gig supporting Indie icons, Feeder, in Dublin's Academy.
In the style of all good new-fashioned romances, Storyfold met on the Internet. Back in the day (well…April 2009) Paddy McKenna took to the web’s drumming fora in search of a graceful tub-thumper. He hit the jackpot in finding drummer/pianist/human-talking-machine, Lindsey Hogan.

Lindsey is that most elusive of individuals, being both a drummer and musician. As the collaboration progressed her melodic instinct grew stronger, and after much searching of the soul, she ceded control of the sticks and found her home among the ebony and ivory. Storyfold’s distinctive sound was taking shape…

Jim McGourty was signed-up for his good looks, machismo and bass chops before another call to find a drummer was beamed into cyber-space. Clearly, fortune was smiling on the fledgling rockers. Despite anticipating weeks of ear-bleeding frustration, Storyfold were blown away by the brilliantly talented Sean McDonnell at the very first audition. The final piece in the Storyfold jigsaw fell into place in September 2010 when ex-Whiskey Limbs guitarist Michael Fortune assumed lead duties. The line-up was complete.

What they say about Storyfold:
“How good does that sound? No, that's not some big American band who has sold 20 million albums. They're Irish and that's Storyfold.” – Rick O'Shea, 2FM

“No one makes better radio friendly catchy pop songs with an attitude like the ultra cool Storyfold. Their three singles released to date are all brilliant and will form the backbone to a wonderful debut” – 2UIBestow Blog
"…who am I kidding, it's absolutely brilliant!" KC, Today FM

Storyfold are:
