Ben Carrigan – The Greatest Narrators

Ben Carrigan releases his debut album The Greatest Narrators on Friday 23rd September 2011. Ahead of that, a free download single “You Knew It All Along” will be available from 19th August.

"The Greatest Narrators celebrates a diverse collection of richly arranged pop songs and filmic scores that reflect my wide variety of musical tastes and styles".

"I always loved classical music and jazz and only later came to pop music. I've also always loved soundtracks. For me, I guess this album is a way of bringing all my favourite elements together".

Dublin multi-instrementalist Ben, is a founding member of The Thrills. After the band signed to Virigin in 2002, Ben spent the next 6 years touring the world and playing with the likes of REM, The Rolling Stones, U2, Morrissey, Oasis and Bob Dylan.

Ben began playing piano, guitar and drums from an early age and after leaving school went on to study at Newpark Music Centre under the instruction of renowned jazz musician and composer Ronan Guilfoyle.  Then it was onto the Cork School of Music where he studied classical percussion.  He frequently appeared with The Cork School Of Music Jazz Big Band and other ensembles at The Cork Jazz Festival.  During this time, Ben was awarded a scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School Of Music in Boston and later to The Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.

The album launch takes place in Dublin’s Sugar Club on Wednesday September 28th.

Glyder

Wicklow rock five-piece, GLYDER, are back with a new line-up and a new album!

The band has completed work on what is Glyder's fourth studio album titled "Backroads to Byzantium".

The album takes the listener on a road trip that has a hint of Americana and progresses to the re-emerging troubles on the streets of Northern Ireland to being homeless on the streets of London. Other themes on the album concern the evils of the tabloid press and global warming. The album ends off in a reflective mood about mortality and how it's not the end.

New singer Jackie Robinson has a unique rock voice that sometimes hints at Paul Rodgers and Phil Mogg. Robinson from Northern Ireland was recruited through an add on the Internet and because the rest of the band are from the South of Ireland the album was written between Jackie and the two Glyder guitarists Bat Kinane and Pete Fisher over email. Working with some home recording software and a few gmail accounts the new Glyder album took shape over Christmas 2010 and early 2011. The album was recorded in Dublin and mixed in Copenhagen.

Speaking of the album, songwriter and guitarist Bat Kinane said: "This new Glyder album has, I feel, my best songwriting and guitar playing to date. I've just put everything into this album and I also seem to have found a new confidence in my playing. Pete's playing is also great and he has some amazing solos – you cannot mistake that this is a great guitar album but the songwriting I feel is top notch too. Jackie, the new singer, really has a quality set of pipes and that makes it very exciting. I like the fact that we used all the modern technology available to us to write the album because Jackie lives 200 miles away. It's very much a classic rock sounding album but it was written and recorded in a way that could have not been done thirty years ago. I know in my heart we have done something very special on this album and I'm very proud to be in this band."

The album is like a fresh beginning for Glyder and it feels a little like the debut album, a full on classic rock style album. The stunning artwork was done by Mark Wilkinson.

Some older Glyder tracks with the new singer Jackie Robinson can be heard on www.reverbnation.com/glyder

Previously Glyder have released three albums and have opened for the likes of Metallica, Slash, Dio, Thin Lizzy, Michael Schenker, Mötley Crüe, Blue Oyster Cult. They have headlined in Spain and their own native Ireland as well as headlining to 10, 000 rock fans in India.

The band is lining up dates playing some festivals in Ireland during the summer and doing some dates with Y+T in Ireland in October.

"Backroads to Byzantium" will be released through SPV/Steamhammer in October 2011.

RTÉ and RAAP Announce Breakthrough Award

RTÉ Radio in association with Recorded Actors Artists Performers (RAAP) is offering emerging musical performers the opportunity to kick-start their careers by winning part of a €20,000 bursary fund and having their music played across RTÉ Radio’s four FM stations: RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

The RTÉ Radio/RAAP Breakthrough 2011 is a series of bursaries which will be awarded to emerging musical performers across a wide range of genres.

The Breakthrough 2011 panel are looking for musicians and/or musical acts that display not only musical and technical skill, but also real audience appeal. The award aims to reward performers and, as such, is aimed at performance rather than original composition.

To be in with a chance of winning, applicants must have their entries in by Friday, 26 August 2011.

The competition is running to coincide with RTÉ’s annual Big Music Week (10 – 16 October 2011), which, in addition to the €5,000 bursary per genre, will give each winning entrant the opportunity to perform on RTÉ Radio as part of the event.

The aim of the RTÉ Radio/RAAP Breakthrough 2011 Bursaries is to celebrate music performance in Ireland and to offer entrants the opportunity to break through to the next level of their music career via the awarding of a bursary of €5,000 per winner, and exposure and airplay across the four channels of RTÉ Radio.

RTÉ 2fm’s Dave Fanning says: “Ireland is awash with exceptionally talented performers of all musical disciplines. It’s great to see RTÉ Radio join forces with RAAP to offer emerging acts this opportunity to get their career off the ground. Who knows, the next U2, Chieftains, Glen Hansard or Colm Wilkinson could be out there waiting for the opportunity to show the world what they’ve got; Breakthrough 2011 could be their chance.”
