Caruso Release New Single – “Freak”

It’s been a long wait for new music from the charismatic Caruso, a band hard to pigeon hole – a phenomenal live band that drift effortlessly between folk and rock, punk and traditional. There’s even a hint of blues and country in there for good measure, and songwriter and driving force Shane Ó Fearghail is fine with that.

The first new music from Caruso since acclaimed 2008 debut album “The Watcher & the Comet”, “FREAK” is an up tempo affair with a refrain that sticks in your head from the first time you hear it. “FREAK” is what it claims to be – a song about being different.  All clichés firmly in place “FREAK” is definitely where Caruso are and Shane wants the band to be.

Caruso are old school, a gigging travelling band, members and performances change and songwriting is a daily thing – as a live band – acoustic or full on they are fantastic with an ever growing European fan base and a German publishing deal in place, “Freak” will be released in Germany in November.

With the album almost completed and set for general release in Spring 2012 we can only look forward to the next installment of Caruso!

"Freak" is available in physical and download release at www.caruso.ie.

Paul McDonnell Wins Christie Hennessy Song Competition

Paul McDonnell was announced as the winner of the Christie Hennessy Song Competition at the live final held in The Brandon Hotel, Tralee on Saturday night, for his song, “Superman”.

Ten finalists selected from almost 200 entries across Ireland performed their original songs in front of the live audience and panel of judges – Brian Hurley (Radio Kerry), Aidan O´Carroll (Kerry School of Music), Kieran Ruttledge (Holiday Tralee) and Keith Johnson (IMRO).
Paul McDonnell (aka Pal Steelo) is a solo performer who, before pursuing his own songwriting career, was lead singer/guitarist with world renowned trad group De Danann. In 2002 he teamed up with Dave Molloy and they collectively recorded over 60 tracks in various studios worldwide, including Cellar Studios, Fork Hill Co. Down where Dave now has a world class recording facility. Paul has recently enjoyed success in writing songs for TV and Film in US and Canada and has had tracks recorded by artists such as Ruby Amanfu, Tommy Fleming, De Danann and Paul Byrom.
The idea for “Superman” came to Paul one day while out cycling. “I thought of people like Lance Armstrong and soldiers who might have looked to Superman as their hero and how they give everything to get close to his hero status. There has to be the idea too that it´s ok just to like yourself as you are and that’s the basic idea of the song.”
Speaking on his win, Paul said “It´s so nice to be able to say I won the first Christie Hennessy Song Competition because of the association with a brilliant songwriter and a wonderful human being. The standard of writing was really excellent.”
Kieran Ruttledge presented Paul with a cheque for €1,000 on behalf of Holiday Tralee. The prize also included a recording session at the renowned Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin with writer/producer Rob Burke, courtesy of Tony Perrey and the Windmill Lane team.
The live final of the Christie Hennessy Song Competition took place as part of A Celebration of Christie Hennessy, a series of musical events hosted by IMRO which took place in Tralee from 12th – 15th October as a tribute to one of Tralee´s most famous sons.
The ten finalists were:

Evangeline O´Neill – Song: “Forever Never Ends”

Smalltown America-‘Best Small Record Label´ Nomination

Smalltown America ‘Best Small Record Label’ Nominees in AIM UK Music Awards 2011
Smalltown America Records are delighted at their inclusion on the shortlist for 2011’s Association Of Independent Music Awards. The Northern Irish Label has been nominated in the ‘Best Small Label’ category and will join artist nominees such as Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Bjork and Bon Iver at this year’s ceremony.

The shortlist is selected by an esteemed music-industry panel and ‘reflects the wealth of talent, innovation and creativity in the independent music sector’. At a time when the wider commercial sector is in decline due to internet piracy and illegal file sharing, the independent music sector has flourished as a result of innovative, digital marketing techniques and its commitment to the traditional ‘LP’ record format.

Smalltown America Records has distinguished itself with innovative digital and physical products over the last number of years. Among these is the formation of it’s own digital distribution company in 2011 [IndependentMusic.com] cited by Andrew Ferris, company founder as ‘our DIY iTunes’ and more recently, by publishing certain titles only on vinyl [as is the case with their current release ‘Public Service Broadcast 10’] for collectors and audiophiles alike.

‘Our aim is to be one of the largest, independent music businesses in the UK ’ states Ferris. ‘We are constantly trying to improve our customer experience and reward fans of our artists’ music with something extra special – this nomination is a fantastic boost for the artists and our staff and we’re all thrilled to bits. To be in the mix with my label heroes such as, Domino, Rough Trade, XL and Matador is a real credit to the team and all the bands on our label that travel thousands of miles to play shows all over the world’.

The label is credited with launching the careers of alternative Irish rock acts And So I Watch You From Afar, Fighting With Wire and LaFaro and is currently celebrating it’s tenth year in business. This is marked by the New Year release of a commemorative book and DVD to mark the anniversary, along with collector’s edition re-issues of its most celebrated titles. The label’s current release is ‘Easy Meat’ the sophomore album by Belfast-based rock quartet LaFaro – also recently nominated in the inaugural Northern Irish Music awards as ‘Best Band’.

BellX1-Dec Tour

With Special Guest Jape

New single “Sugar High” – 25th November

Bell X1 have just announced an Irish tour for December and will release a new single “Sugar High” ahead of that on 25th November – the third single to be taken from the album Bloodless Coup, which was released in April of this year.

After a summer of big marquee and festival shows including the Galway Arts Festival, Marley Park, Sea Sessions, Cork Marquee and a rooftop show for Facebook, Bell X1 are going back to basics for their winter dates.
Special guest for all the tour dates will be Jape, who’s new album Ocean Of Frequency and live shows are currently enjoying some great reviews all round.

Bell X1 are off to New York in October to take part in Other Voices NYC, which takes place at Le Poisson Rouge on 27th and 28th (along with Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Laurie Anderson, Doveman, Glen Hansard, Joseph O'Connor and Colum McCann). Then, it’s back to the US in November for their second headline tour of the year. There’s also another UK tour in December lined up, so they’ll be in fine form on their return for the Irish shows.

Talking about the background to “Sugar High”, Paul Noonan says:
"Ireland is, in ways, a microcosm or concentrated dose of the madness that has us all sloshing around in the shit. The song began as a debauched HR Giger vision of the Fianna Fáil tent at the Galway Races, with all the boys out of their minds, riding each other…on a Sugar High."

Tour Dates
Thurs Dec 1 – The Forum, Waterford
Fri Dec 2 – Big Top, Limerick
Sat Dec 3 – Black Box, Galway
Sat 10 Dec – Savoy, Cork
Thurs Dec 15 – Nerve Centre, Derry
Fri Dec 16 – Mandella Hall, Belfast

Youthreach Music Awards 2011

As the X Factor contestants once again flaunt their talents on our TV screens, youths from across Ireland will display their own x factor in the first ever Youthreach Music Awards. The event will take place on the 26th October in RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre Tallaght as young adults from across the country will converge on the capital to battle it out for the most prestigious musical prize within youthreach.

Over the course of 2011 a number of Youthreach centers participated in songwriting workshops with CraftZone. The youths were guided through the process of song writing and learned to write and record a song. The result is a fine display of original creativity from young adults who had never written nor performed prior.

The idea behind the awards comes from CraftZone’s vision of using music as a transformational tool in the development of the underprivileged youth. CraftZone believes that services such as songwriting can help youths realize they have potential, to take control of their lives and responsibility for the choices they make.

And now to top off their creative endeavors the youths will have their achievements acknowledged in a ‘Grammy-style’ award ceremony, which will be judged by both IMRO and Hotpress. You can hear the six finalists in the ‘best song’ category at www.craftzone.ie While the tracks are available as free downloads all donations would be very welcome to cover costs of this non profit event.
