Deep Sky Objects Announce New Single’This City’s At War’

A deep sky object is star cluster bright enough to be seen by the naked eye. That alternative-rock Kerry/Dublin trio Deep Sky Objects have adopted the name not only illustrates their ambition but the breath of their scope. Drawing on influences from The Smiths, Interpol and Radiohead, Deep Sky Objects light up 2018 with their new single ‘This City’s At War’ set for release March 12. The trio will launch the new single with a show at Drop Dead Twice in Dublin on March 9.

The vigorous, punchy Director-esque ‘This City’s At War’ is a search for an answer in a time of uncertainty. The fizzing melodic guitar counters with the languid melancholic vocal. “I don’t know who I’m fighting for” bemoans lead singer Kevin O’Brien at the centre of the song’s earworm hook. It begs the question, in a time when we all ‘must’ have an opinion, is it okay to say “I don’t know?” Must we have already picked a side? And is ignorance truly bliss?

Deep Sky Objects include brothers Kevin O’Brien (lead vocals and guitar), Thomas O’Brien (drums and backing vocal) and DD Foley (bass guitar and backing vocals). ‘This City’s At War’ was recorded in Whitewell Studios with Ciaran O’Shea and mastered by Fergal Davis. ‘This City’s At War’ features on the bands self-released EP of the same name released late 2017.

I think Kevin O’Brien could be one of the most personable vocalists I’ve heard in an Irish band in an age, I love this guy’s voice” says Remy Connolly of The Best of Music & Film Blog. “Each track is engaging, thrilling and well crafted. It’s a meaty well produced collection of tracks that is laser-focused on doing the simple things to perfection and boy do they excel”, remarks Indie Buddie.

Deep Sky Objects have set out with purpose and ‘This City’s At War’ sizzles with impetus and expectancy. As we enter the start of a bright new year Deep Sky Objects not only feel like a part of the commentary but also assures us of the potential that both the band and 2018 holds to dazzle us.

Live Dates:
February 15 – Crane Lane Theatre, Cork
March 9 – Drop Dead Twice, Dublin

Niall Hanna Releases Debut Album ‘Autumn Winds’

On his debut record, Niall Hanna brings new life to traditional songs in a uniquely northern style. Having won the Young Musician’s Platform Award from Arts Council NI, he has used this springboard to deliver a strong album of traditional songs from Ulster, incorporating two of his own newly composed songs, including the title track ‘Autumn Winds’.

The album breathes new life in to some of the most famous old ballads of Ulster. ‘Lough Erne Shore’ learned from the singing of Eithne Ní Uallacháin is a perfect representation of the tone of the record, marrying a lush modern arrangement with the beautiful old melody. Other classics such as ‘The Stately Woods Of Truagh’ and ‘Banks Of The Bann’ also feature, demonstrating Niall’s ability to interpret the big Ulster Songs in a way that will appeal to the listeners of today. Sensitively produced by Dónal O’Connor, the album incorporates contemporary musical arrangements and instrumentation, however the focus of this body of work is firmly on the voice, and this fine collection of traditional songs is delivered with conviction in Niall’s own unique style. A grandson of the legendary traditional singer Geordie Hanna, the ‘Lough-shore’ style of singing is strongly represented here. Juxtaposing the old with the new, Niall’s own song ‘Sweet Lough Neagh’ demonstrates his skill in composition, praising the tranquillity of his native Derrytresk, and the surrounding area in County Tyrone.

Rachel McGarrity adds fiddle and vocals to several tracks on the album, alongside the concertina and whistle playing of Niall’s brother Ciaran Hanna. Dermot Moynagh of Réalta provides Percussion/Bodhrán and Dónal O’Connor adds keyboards/piano culminating in a consistent, thought out sound that flows from the first track to the last.

In recent years Niall has toured Europe and Australia and has collaborated with many of Ireland’s finest musicians and singers such as John McSherry, The Rapparees, Martin Meehan, Buille and Cathal Hayden.

In truth ‘Autumn Winds ‘gives us a genuine insight in to Niall Hanna’s own musical passion for traditional songs whilst also demonstrating his ability to carry his great musical legacy lightly and add his own treasures to the great Irish song tradition.

IV International Uuno Klami Composition Competition Gets Underway

The International Uuno Klami Composition Competition, now one of the world’s foremost composition competitions, is being held for the fourth time in 2018–2019. The Jury will be Finland’s Kalevi Aho and Magnus Lindberg and Estonia’s Erkki-Sven Tüür, three of the greatest composers and most influential musical figures of their generation. The conductor member of the Jury will be Olari Elts (Estonia), Artistic Advisor of the Kymi Sinfonietta.

The competition is open to citizens of any EU Member State, of a Nordic country, or of Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Moldavia, Monaco, Montenegro, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Ukraine or the Vatican City State (proof of permanent right of residence also accepted). There is no age limit. Works entered for the competition must not have been previously published or performed and must last 15–30 minutes. They must be sent to the Competition Office postmarked not later than December 3, 2018. The following prizes will be awarded: I prize €11,000, II prize €9,000 and III prize €7,000. The Jury may, if it wishes, divide the prizes in some other way.

In early spring 2019 the Jury will select at least three but not more than five of the anonymous entries for the finals. These will be performed at concerts in Kouvola and Kotka in the autumn season 2019 by the Kymi Sinfonietta, one of the finest Finnish orchestras. The Jury chooses the winners only after hearing the finals concerts and their rehearsals. The composers of these entries will be invited to be closely involved in the rehearsing of their works and thus to acquire valuable international contacts and networks that may have far-reaching consequences for their future careers. For many composers, success in the Klami Competition has indeed meant a decisive boost in their careers.

As composer Kalevi Aho, Chairman of the Jury as of the previous International Uuno Klami Composition Competitions, reports: “The Uuno Klami is the most important Finnish composition competition and one of the greatest of its kind in Europe. The most challenging stage for the Jury is selecting the finalists, since the standard has been extremely high throughout and the competition has attracted a remarkably large number of entries.

The International Uuno Klami Composition Competition has attracted an astounding number of entries: 117 from 23 countries the first time it was held, 186 from 27 countries the second time, and no fewer than 265 from 37 countries on the third occasion. This clearly indicates an obvious demand for a professional competition for international composers. The competition’s aim is to enrich and diversify the repertoire scored specifically for an orchestra of sinfonietta size and to discover and promote contemporary European music and composition under the name of Uuno Klami (1900–1961). The competition is organised by a Patrons’ Association.

Vickers Vimy and Cat Lundy Release ‘Keep Your Eye On The Road’

‘Keep Your Eye On The Road’ is the first single off Vickers Vimy’s new record ‘Atlas Of Hearts’.

A bittersweet song of friendship and loss, it features a heartfelt vocal harmony evoking Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (Raising Sand).

Vickers Vimy ramble the late hours brandishing acoustic guitar, upright piano and a lovelorn brass ensemble to quell a pair of drunken hearts ‘howling at the moon’.

Hailing from Mayo, on the wild atlantic coast of Ireland, Vickers Vimy craft songs that dwell on the borders of folk and Americana. Rich eclectic sounds anchor lyrical themes of scratched vinyl nights and hazy Sunday mornings. Their second album “Atlas of Hearts” will be released on March 31st.

Vickers Vimy have collaborated with Colm Mac Con Iomaire (The Frames & Swell Season) and had the pleasure of recording in the studio of Nick Seymour (Crowded House). Vickers Vimy had the amazing fortune to support the late John Martyn. They have have supported the Hothouse Flowers, Maria Doyle Kennedy, and Mundy. They have shared the RTE Music Train with Christy Moore, Kodaline, Lisa O’Neill and Jack L.

Forthcoming shows:

MARCH 2018

23rd  Mayo, Castlebar, Linenhall

The Stunning Announce New Single, Album and Tour Dates

‘Heads Are Gonna Roll’ is the latest single from this brilliantly-crafted, brand new album. This track and ‘Everything that Rises’ are both available as an immediate download with the album Pre-Order on iTunes and Amazon Music.

Amongst the band’s fans ‘Heads Are Gonna Roll’ is one of the most popular and enduring of all The Stunning’s tunes and also one of the band’s personal favourites. Originally released as a single in 1991, it reached number five in the charts and heralded a change in direction for the band musically. Unlike the diverse nature of the songs that made up their debut ‘Paradise in the Picturehouse’, ‘Heads’ sounded more of it’s time and even incorporated the ‘Manchester beat’ that was in sync with acts such as the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Soup Dragons etc.

Over the years the song has developed into a live tour de force. With an evocative trumpet motif and a rousing chorus “All these years I never asked why…” the band now play the song with an energy and passion that has evolved over countless gigs since the original recording.

The new recording captures this spirit and reflects the years of experience the individual band members have built up playing music with different artists as well as with The Stunning since the band resumed performing again from 2003. Recorded live in Grouse Lodge studios as part of the re-recorded ‘Twice Around the World’ sessions, it took only a few takes to capture the energy of the final version.

The song’s lyrics are just as relevant today. Steve sings about fighting back against the acceptance of “a world full of sorrow” and how man appears not to have learned lessons from history Down through the ages we’re tearing the pages, while there’s more of the book still to write” He sings that you have to get up and act in order to effect change or before you know it, the things you value will be gone: You don’t miss the water till the well runs dry and you’ve nothing left to show….so heads are gonna roll”

The Stunning launch the album on March 16th with a lunchtime appearance in Tower Records and a show at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. A nationwide tour follows with more dates to be announced.

Stoat Release New Album This Saturday

In an age of kneejerk sensation and flash-in-the-pan worship, Dublin three-piece Stoat are perfect testament to the power of playing the long-game. Having been making music together for the best part of 20 years, the threesome’s wonderfully wry, masterfully incisive brand of genre-warping indie-pop will come to the fore once more via their highly-anticipated second album, ‘Try Not To Think About It’, on February 10.

From to-do lists that never seem to get any smaller to psychic cul-de-sacs, the loneliness of talk radio, the pay-off of accepting one’s lot in the world and much more, at the heart of Stoat’s craft is their uncanny knack of distilling the everyday to something worth celebrating. Weaving triumphant tales from humdrum moments, their razor-sharp songs burst forth and brim with pathos, surrealism and the keenest sense of humour. But it’s not merely words that ensure ‘Try Not To Think About It’ will soon emerge as a singular, distinctly Irish artistic statement. From lead single
‘Trampolina’ and weirdo-pop hoedown ‘Hard Sums’ to the wonderfully idiosyncratic ‘Other Men’, Stoat’s songs are fully-fledged trips. Pop-centric, yes, but never at the expense at pushing boundaries, blurring genres and putting spirit – hard-won and single-minded – centre-stage.

Supported by Shrug Life, Stoat launch ‘Try Not To Think About It’ at the Underground on Dame Street in Dublin on February 10.
